‘Spider-Man’ Musical Debuts After Web Of Issues

‘If you are really trying something extraordinary, it’s going to be difficult,’ original director Julie Taymor tells MTV News at premiere. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Rick Marshall “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: MTV News After months and months of pre-production, including injured actors, troubles with the script and a complete overhaul, the beleaguered Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” officially opened on the Great White Way on Tuesday night (June 14). MTV News braved the rain and crowds at the Foxwoods Theater in the heart of midtown Manhattan to chat with the musical’s production team about what the show’s fits and starts have taught them along the way. “It’s just hard to do anything when you’re trying to do something new and big and different,” original director Julie Taymor said of the challenges. “If you are really trying something extraordinary, it’s going to be difficult. And that’s OK, because eventually you get there.” “I think what happened is that when they were in previews, they discovered that the demographic was so big, they had 6-year-old children in the audience, they had 86-year-old grandparents in the audience. They wanted to make sure the show could reach out to all of them,” explained new director Philip William McKinley. “I think we tried to make the story a bit more linear,” added writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “But we also tried to bring the characters that fans know and love, Mary Jane, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, the Green Goblin, we tried to give them more material and go a little bit deeper on their journeys.” McKinley told a story about watching two young boys in the theater’s lobby “webbing” each other after one of the preview performances, who declared it the “best Broadway show ever” and said they couldn’t wait to see their next musical. “I thought, ‘Perfect, let’s develop those new audiences,’ ” McKinley said of bringing more people into the theater experience. “The people that we’ve met in the community who really care for the art, they want to see new blood, they want to see new innovation,” said Bono, who wrote songs for the show with U2 bandmate The Edge. “They want to see new characters onstage, and I think we brought that.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

‘Twilight’ Stars Return To Comic-Con For ‘Breaking Dawn’

Summit announces cast Q&A session and ‘exclusive footage’ from first part of finale. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Photo: Jun Sato/ Getty Images Attention, “Twilight” fans: Summit Entertainment announced Tuesday (June 14) via the “Twilight” Facebook page that “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” will play a significant role in the studio’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this year. “The studio will host one of the first panels of the day in Hall H on Thursday, July 21st dedicated to ‘The Twilight Saga’ franchise,” Summit’s statement reads. “Fans interested in the story’s final chapters will be shown exclusive footage from ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ and be treated to a filmmaker and cast Q&A session providing details on the first half of the epic two part finale, in theatres November 18, 2011.” We don’t know which castmembers will be in attendance yet, but because July 21 is still a ways away, we imagine Summit will release a few more details as the epic comic and pop-culture convention approaches. For those who have been following “Twilight” since the beginning, you will likely remember that Comic-Con 2008 was the first time the cast appeared together in public, creating a frenzy so big and shocking that other media outlets in addition to MTV News finally realized how serious the fans were about the soon-to-be blockbuster and its stars. In 2009, the stars were back for more, and their popularity had grown considerably, leading to mile-long lines outside Hall H where their panels were to take place. The three lead actors — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — admitted that the convention was still an intimidating place . The rest of the massive cast was also on hand for a series of appearances around San Diego, along with unveiling a slew of “New Moon” and “Twilight”-specific merchandise . Last year, Comic-Con was without any major “Twilight” action since “Eclipse” had been released already and production on “Breaking Dawn” had yet to begin. So what will happen this year? Shia LaBeouf And ‘Transformers’ Director Michael Bay Are ‘Like Brothers’

‘We have our bickering in public sometimes. But I love Michael,’ star says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LeBouf Photo: MTV News With “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” set to hit theaters at the end of the month, and a new face in Rosie Huntington-Whiteley ready to battle the alien bots, it seemed the sometimes turbulent relationship between director Michael Bay and former star Megan Fox was a thing of the past. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, though, Shia LaBeouf seemingly added fuel to Fox and Bay’s fiery relationship when he suggested Fox felt “awkward” working with Bay. But when we caught up with LaBeouf at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, the 24-year-old actor said his comments had been misconstrued in the media and that he has nothing but affection for the director. “I love Mike; we’re like brothers,” he said. “And we have our bickering in public sometimes. But I love Michael. And he’s still the favorite director I’ve ever worked for, and I would work with him again, and I’d do anything for him. “But no way was anything I was trying to say in malice or trying to attack Michael,” he added. That didn’t stop news outlets and blogs from publishing screaming headlines about how Fox couldn’t handle Bay’s directorial style and how LaBeouf was coming to the defense of his ousted co-star. The truth, the actor told us, is that part of the creative potency in his partnership with Bay — an alliance that has driven the franchise to $1.5 billion in box-office receipts — is the way in which they can butt heads, take a breather and then move forward with the task at hand. “We scream at each other all the time,” he explained. “That’s been sort of our relationship. There’s a contention that needs to exist for us to get through the movie, and we push each other.” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . Cry Me A River: Paris Hilton Throws A Tantrum After Barbara Walters Calls Shenanigans During Interview

Poor thang. Paris Hilton thought she was going to reinvent herself by doing a reality show to show the world how much she’s not the person we all think she is. The problem is, she really is still the same person she was the LAST time she did a reality show to show the world she’s not the person we think she is. And now, people are calling her out about it. The reality star and her mother, Kathy Hilton, were on the ABC chat show to promote her show series, The World According to Paris. But neither Walters or her co-host Whoopi Goldberg thought Paris came across well in the premiere episode. Walters, in particular, took Paris to task for only being shown shopping, clubbing, drinking, and complaining about doing her court-ordered community service. The newswoman even reminded Paris that in the past she’d talked about wanting to help women prisoners and engage in extensive charity work — none of which was seen on the first episode of her new show. “Why not present that side of yourself, if indeed it exists,” Walters challenged Paris. Paris’ response was to throw a backstage tantrum with her daddy’s support, then refuse to talk to the media while her PR team tries to find a way to make this look better. Afterward and off-camera, both Paris and her father, Rick, berated a “View” producer, upset at the tone of the interview. A rep for the show confirmed the incident. Hilton’s rep had no comment. That night, Paris threw herself into a long round of partying with sister, Nicky. After the duo attended a launch for “World” at the Gansevoort Hotel, they dined with friends at The Darby, then partied at Avenue and 1Oak. The Hiltons ended up next door at Artichoke Basille’s Pizza and Bar at about 3 a.m. Thursday morning. Hours later, Hilton abuptly canceled a lunch with several magazine editors and an interview, with her team claiming she was sick, losing her voice and didn’t want to infect others. By then, ratings for the “World” premiere had been tallied: an anemic 400,000 viewers. She took off for Spain Thursday night to support her Paris Hilton motorcycle racing team.
