Wendi McLendon-Covey Lands Starring Role: Is She Still the Unsung Hero of Bridesmaids?

Very happy news on the wire today: Wendi McLendon-Covey, whose hilarious role in Bridesmaids all but vanished in the film’s third act, is set to star in A White Trash Christmas , a Christmas Carol revamp in which a “whiskey-soaked, trashy mother is visited by three ghosts who try to show her a path to a brighter future.” While this character sounds like a retread of her Bridesmaids part, I’m always down for a lady-led Scrooged reboot. ( A Diva’s Christmas Carol , anyone ?) This leads us to a larger question: Is McLendon-Covey the unsung hero of Bridesmaids ? We provide evidence after the jump.

Talkback: Is Melissa McCarthy an Oscar Contender?

Melissa McCarthy sailed through her SNL hosting gig last night on pure charm and panache, even if the skits weren’t particularly novel. Coming off her recent Emmy win for Mike & Molly , she’s officially the most likable (and most liked) dame in primetime right now, which begs the question: Is this a wave of well wishes that can lead to the Oscar dais? Should we expect her name to pop in the Best Supporting Actress category alongside shoo-ins Octavia Spencer and Vanessa Redgrave?

Melissa McCarthy Makes Plus-Size Fashionable

Known for her hilarious Bridesmaids quotes and her starring role on Mike & Molly , actress Melissa McCarthy is living proof that you don’t have to be plastered across gossip sites in bikini photos to be laugh-out-loud funny. Plus-size women can feel like stars, too. After co-designing her Emmys dress with dressmaker Daniella Pearl, the 41-year-old – who combed through “9 million dresses with taffeta or shiny bows” – decided to create a clothing line for women with similar body types. “Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter . “It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.” It wasn’t until McCarthy became a mom to daughters Vivian, 4, and Georgette, 1, that she stopped feeling insecure about her physical appearance. “I just try not to give too much energy to it,” she says. “At 20, I would have been like: ‘Don’t they like me? Was it my hair?’ At 41, I think the things that define me, I hope, are a lot more than those kinds of petty things.” Now that’s something all of us could probably learn from. In addition to delving into the world of fashion, McCarthy and her husband, actor Ben Falcone, are also starting their own production company.

GALLERY: The Fighter, and the Best and Worst of Mark Wahlberg

While his castmates Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo got Oscar nominations for their roles in The Fighter (out this week in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment) — with the latter two winning the trophy — Mark Wahlberg’s performance went unheralded. (He did, however, share in the film’s Best Picture nod as one of its producers.) But given the larger-than-life quality that Bale and Leo, in particular, brought to their roles, it seemed like an intentional call on the part of Wahlberg and director David O. Russell to let Wahlberg’s on-screen personality recede a bit so the spotlight could shine elsewhere. Still, he’s just fine in the film, and it inspired me to think of the sublime (and the ridiculous) turns he’s had elsewhere — and no, we’re not counting The Marky Mark Workout in either category.

Is the Bridesmaids Marketing Campaign Doing It Justice?

Movieline’s own Jen Yamato saw Bridesmaids at SXSW and declared it a magnificent crowd-pleaser and the best R-rated comedy since The Hangover . I believe her! But I can’t believe the tone set by the new Bridesmaids trailer, which undersells the movie’s intelligence and goes for cheap romcom laughs. Rage!

The Mike & Molly Fat Tracker: ‘You’re Sweating Like a 300 Pound Hooker in Church’

What is the one thing worse than sitting through a three-hour opera while sick? Watching an overweight sitcom character sweat through a three-hour opera while he’s sick. Hence last night’s episode of Mike & Molly , “Mike Goes to the Opera,” in which Mike caught a virus and his friends and family missed no less than ten opportunities to make fat jokes at his blubbery expense. “Don’t they just put animals your size down when they get sick?”* Hey-oh?

Mike & Molly Fat Joke Tracker: ‘What To Get the Man With No Neck’

Mike & Molly rebounded from a particularly fat joke free episode with last night’s “First Christmas,” in which the plump lovebirds shared, well, their first Christmas, while their friends and family members lobbed unfunny size-ist insults at them. Don’t you just love sitcom holidays? Let’s review the awful zingers.
