Poor Thang: Destiny’s Step-Child Michelle Williams Reveals Struggle With Depression “God Alone Can’t Cure It”

Michelle Williams opens up about her battle with depression after losing her shift at Burger King . Michelle Williams Opens Up About Fight With Depression With a new single out , a solo album in the works and a starring role in a national tour of a Broadway musical, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that Michelle Williams once had difficulty just getting out of bed. Via ABC News reports: The singer-actress — one third of Destiny’s Child alongside Beyonce and Kelly Rowland — said that in the past few months she has emerged from years of suffering from moderate depression. Her dark cloud lifted thanks to exercise, therapy and positive thinking. “I’ve dealt with depression,” the 32-year-old said during a break in rehearsals for a new touring production of “Fela!” that kicks off later this month. “I had to choose to get out of bed and do whatever I needed to do to be happy.” Williams says she suffered her first bout of depression at 15 or 16 and has managed to avoid medication. She is speaking out for the first time about her battle to encourage others to seek help. “We’re taught, ‘Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you.’ Well, in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists — that’s your healing. Take advantage of it,” she said. “Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It’s OK if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help.” Good for Michelle for speaking out about mental health. Depression and other personality disorders widely go untreated in the Black community because mental health is still considered taboo. Go Michelle!

Lawsuits: Four Gay Men Are Suing Ex-Therapists Who Promised To Help ‘Turn Them Straight’!!

It was worth a shot , wasn’t it?!?! A group of men are taking therapists to court for deceiving them after the promise to help them ‘overcome unwanted attractions’ failed…SMH. According to The New York Times , In New Jersey on Tuesday, four gay men who tried the therapy filed a civil suit against a prominent counseling group, charging it with deceptive practices under the state’s Consumer Fraud Act. The former clients said they were emotionally scarred by false promises of inner transformation and humiliating techniques that included stripping naked in front of the counselor and beating effigies of their mothers. They paid thousands of dollars in fees over time, they said, only to be told that the lack of change in their feelings was their own fault. Since the 1970s, when mainstream mental health associations stopped branding homosexuality as a disorder, a small network of renegade therapists, conservative religious leaders, and self-identified “life coaches” have continued to argue that it is not inborn, but an aberration rooted in childhood trauma. Homosexuality is caused, these therapists say, by a stifling of normal masculine development, often by distant fathers and overbearing mothers, or by early physical abuse. But leading scientific and medical groups say that the theories of homosexuality are unfounded and that there is no evidence that core inner-urges can be changed. They also warn that the therapy can, in the words of the American Psychiatric Association, cause “depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior” and “reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient.” One former patient in the suit, Michael Ferguson, 30, who is now a doctoral candidate in neuroscience at the University of Utah, sought help from Jonah in 2008. He tried to battle his homosexuality, he said, when he was a practicing Mormon who believed that only those in a heterosexual marriage could achieve eternal bliss. “It becomes fraudulent, even cruel,” he said in an interview. “To say that if you really want to change you could — that’s an awful thing to tell somebody.” “I was encouraged to develop anger and rage toward my parents,” he added. “The notion that your parents caused this is a horrible lie. They ask you to blame your mother for being loving and wonderful.” Another former patient in the suit, Chaim Levin, 23, grew up in an Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn where, he said, being gay seemed unthinkable. Referred to Jonah by a rabbi when he was 18, Mr. Levin began attending weekend retreats at $650 each. For a year and a half, he had weekly private sessions with Mr. Downing as well as weekly group sessions. He quit, he said, after Mr. Downing had him remove his clothes and touch himself, saying it would help him reconnect with his masculinity. Mr. Levin said that he was abused by a relative between the ages of 6 and 10 and that Mr. Goldberg and Mr. Downing blamed the abuse for his homosexual attractions. “Saying the abuse made you gay is terrible,” Mr. Levin said. “Once I accepted that I was gay, I was able to focus on the more serious problem of a history of abuse.” Do you think it’s worth the ‘effort’ for men to try therapy in order to change their feelings for other men? Plastic Surgery: Man Born With Imbalanced Balls Gets Nads Knifed Up And Evened Out Using Chin Implant

Way to “drop the ball!” A man who was self-conscious about his uneven nads went under the knife to fix them up. Via UK Daily Mail Reports : A man born with very uneven “nads” has become the first in the world to have them evened up with an implant used to plump up the chin or cheekbones. The remarkable operation reflects the growing number of men who have issues with their privates, say the Mexican surgeons who carried out the operation. The 45-year-old man is said to have been born with an extremely small right “nut” that never descended, a condition known as cryptorchidism. That “nut” which had never worked, was removed and replaced it with the ‘largest implant on the market,’ the man’s surgeon and urologist, Fernando Ugarte, told the wesbite LiveScience. But this still meant his “nads” appeared uneven and he was wracked with insecurities about his new appearance. He is said to have been diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder, a mental health problem related to body image, in which an individual has a preoccupation with one or more perceived or slight defects in his or her appearance. To correct the asymmetry, last year Dr Ugarte and his colleagues at the National Autonomous University of Mexico made a small incision in the man’s groin and placed a silicone chin implant between the left “nut” and several layers of tissue. The piece of silicone, about about 6mm thick, is routinely used to plump up the chin or the cheekbones. ‘The surgery is safe and doesn’t reduce fertility or sexual function because it doesn’t touch the “nad” at all, Dr Ugarte said. He added that the man’s sex life was back to normal a month after the operation and his “balls” worked as normal. Reporting in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, he said that two other men have since had the surgery. The article also discusses the fact that men are becoming as worried about body image as women. ‘We are starting to have the same kind of problems that the ladies have with body image,’ said Dr Ugarte. ‘There are many people who are probably not feeling satisfied with their “ball” size, and now they have a new option.’ ‘It’s very well-known that most of the men’s magazines have techniques or pills or products’ for “schlong” enhancement, Ugarte said. ‘But now, patients also want to have bigger balls, not just the schlong.’ Y’all know this dude is now running around grabbing his junk talkin’ ’bout “DEEZ NUTS!” We know this had to be serious for this guy to go to all this trouble but we can’t help finding it to be Pure Comedy! Ho Sit Down (In First Class): Aubrey O’Day Gets Certified Insane So She Can Fly With Her “Emotional Support Animals”

GTFOHWTBS!!! We knew Aubrey O’Day was a dog lover but this is just ridiculous! Via TMZ : Aubrey O’Day is a certified headcase … so says one of her doctors, who issued the reality star an official medical document which allows her to bring her dogs on to an airplane. A rep for Virgin America airlines tells TMZ … the “Celebrity Apprentice” star was cleared to bring her 2 pets into the 1st class section of a flight this week … because they are registered as “Emotional Support Animals.” So how does one get emotional support animal clearance? Ya gotta have a doctor write a letter … stating you have mental issues. According to the Virgin America website, the airline requires the passenger to produce a letter from a licensed mental health professional which substantiates the guest’s disability-related need for the animal to accompany them in the aircraft cabin. V.A. claims the letter must state that the passenger “has a mental health-related disability” … and that having the animal accompany the passenger is necessary for his or her mental health. The nature of O’Day’s mental health issue is unclear. We called the starlet for comment. O’Day tweeted pics of the dogs enjoying themselves on the flight to San Francisco … and the V.A. rep tells us she was “incredibly sweet and polite” … and nothing short of a “great guest.” Check out lots of Aubrey’s flight related tweets and photos below.

Robert Randolph Accuses John Travolta of Gay Trysts, Sues Actor For Damaging Reputation

John Travolta is being sued by author Robert Randolph, who accuses the movie legend of numerous gay trysts and consequently claims that Travolta spread lies about Randolph’s mental health in order to diminish his credibility. Robert claims he personally saw John engage in gay sex at various bathhouses. The book, entitled You’ll Never Spa in This Town Again , details Travolta’s alleged sexual exploits with other men, including Randolph himself. In his suit, Randolph claims that as he was releasing his book, Travolta and his powerful attorney Marty Singer unleashed a P.R. attack against him. They claimed, Randolph says, that he had mental issues and had been institutionalized, all as a calculated attack to paint him as an unreliable source. Randolph claims the plan worked and that retailers were deterred from selling his book. He is suing both Travolta and Singer for unspecified damages. Another alleged Travolta gay lover, Doug Gotterba , is also said to be writing a book. Re: Randolph, a rep for Travolta has issued a statement saying: “The lawsuit filed by Robert Randolph is absurd. The suit is based on a privileged communication, and it will promptly be thrown out by the court.” The statement continues, “To evaluate the credibility of Robert Randolph and his ridiculous lawsuit one need look no further than his own statements on his website stating that he sustained ‘permanent brain damage’ and had to ‘retrain’ his brain.” “Mr. Travolta will aggressively defend himself against this lawsuit and expects to be fully vindicated when this meritless case is dismissed.” Singer also said in a statement: “This is a ridiculous lawsuit. It is based on a letter which is completely privileged under the law. We intend to sue the attorneys for malicious prosecution after the court promptly dismisses this baseless lawsuit.” Maybe so, but this is like the 500th story in which someone claims John Travolta is gay . We don’t care either way if he is, but it’s interesting. [Photo: WENN.com]

REVIEW: Josh Lucas Moors Himself in Grief In Clunky Hide Away

Filmmaker Chris Eyre made his name with his 1998 debut  Smoke Signals , a delicate indie adapted from a short story by Sherman Alexie about two young men living on the Coeur D’Alene Indian Reservation who go an a road trip to retrieve the belongings of one’s recently deceased estranged father. It was a small, wistful thing that offered a look at characters and a community that don’t get a lot of time on screen. Hide Away,  Eyre’s newest work — since Smoke Signals he’s made four features that have mostly headed to TV — is in the same emotional vein as that first film, but heads away from the rez for a setting that’s more figurative and characters that are more generic (by choice, though it’s also a problem). It’s a slender story of mourning that manages some lovely bits of mood while also being dreary and a little preposterous in its spareness. Josh Lucas does a heroic amount to ground Hide Away  in real feeling in the lead role, an unnamed man who is in mourning for reasons we slowly start to understand, one related to the wife and kids we see him with in gauzy flashbacks. “Are you divorced?” people ask him. “No, I’m not,” he responds numbly. He’s told by the man from whom he buys a boat at the start of a film that a lot of divorced guys apparently do what he’s doing. He doesn’t know anything about boats — what he’s looking for is an escape, a refuge — which is why he ends up with a sailboat in barely functioning condition, the Hesperus, named for the evening star. Arriving in a black suit like he either fled straight from a business meeting or a funeral, the would-be mariner pokes around the decrepit vessel on which he plans to live, and starts learning his way around. Hide Away , which was written by Peter Vanderwall, was shot and is set in a real place — on Grand Traverse Bay in Michigan — but the film strips away most identifying details, leaving the dock on which the man’s ship is moored to seem like an outpost at the end of the world. The cinematography, by Elliot Davis, makes the place look fancifully lovely, with its still, reflective water and open skies, its winter storms and cloud banks. There’s a town nearby — the man heads in sometimes to buy groceries or booze — but he doesn’t really interact with it, having chosen solitude. A few people come and go around the dock, including a guy (Jon Tenney) who actually is divorced and using his recent boat-ownership to get women, but otherwise the man’s alone. Lucas is saddled with a lot of scenes in which he’s by himself on screen, and for the most part does an admirable job of conveying someone who’s so haunted by grief that he needed to leave the world behind without actually talking about what he went through. His moments of grief — staring out, sleepless, at night; drinking himself into a stupor at Christmas while lit-up boats past by — feel rough and believable, especially in the way he courts death by acting carelessly while never actually wanting to do the deed himself. Lucas turns the man’s repair of the ship into a series of bits of physical comedy — running out of the shower after it breaks, trying to raise the sail, setting off smoke alarms when starting a fire in the stove. He makes the repetition of work into something believably soothing, makes it seem like a process through which you could genuinely start to heal. But all the interactions the man has with the few visitors he encounters and friends he makes are leadenly infused with meaning. There’s the beautiful waitress (Ayelet Zurer) at the restaurant by the dock who seems to have taken up residence there exclusively to offer comfort sex and a more maternal caring to the broken wanders who end up nearby. There’s the older man (James Cromwell) who offers words of wisdom with regard to his own sorrow — it’s “not a recipe I recommend a young man follow.” There’s the former work colleague (Taylor Nichols) who drops by to insist the man come back to his software company, offering to set him up to telecommute. And there’s the pretty check-out girl (Casey LaBow) who inexplicably comes to him for shelter after her boyfriend beats her. The entire world seems there only to patiently nurture the man back to mental health — as if he’s in some kind of extremely elaborate sanatorium in which patients are led to think that this whole recovery-by-way-of-fixing-a-sailboat thing was their idea from the start. Hide Away has more clunky moments than it does elegantly minimalist ones, the worst of which is the glimpse of what actually happened to the man’s family. It’s over-the-top and unnecessary, given that we’d already gotten the idea about why the guy feels such guilt and grief. In shaping a film so deliberately around things left out, it would have been better to give the audience the benefit of the doubt and leave a little more mystery to the nameless man and his pain. Jessica Vega, Bride Who Faked Cancer to Pay For Wedding, Released From Jail

Jessica Vega, a New York woman who faked having cancer so donors would pay for her “dream wedding” and Caribbean honeymoon, was released from jail Wednesday after repaying the guests she conned and agreeing to community service. Makes that stomach flu you used to skip work last month seem tame at least. Vega apologized in court for the scam and was sentenced to time served. She had been behind bars less than two months since her arrest. After her unbelievable stunt unraveled, she pleaded guilty in April to charges of scheming to defraud and possession of a forged instrument. When she left the Orange County Jail in upstate New York a few hours later, she apologized again, insisting that “of course” she was sorry. Officials say Jessica Vega had paid back more than $13,000 to her guests, with nine victims getting checks ranging from $500-3,700. Vega also was sentenced to five years of probation and must do 300 hours of community service while undergoing mental health treatment. She was living in Montgomery, 60 miles north of NYC, when she began the scam, which picked up steam when a newspaper did a story on her. Residents of the area, touched by her claim to be dying of leukemia, had donated her dress, the wedding rings, an Aruba time-share and more. Sometime after the 2010 wedding, the groom, Michael O’Connell, went to the newspaper with questions about Vega’s story, and they divorced. Police investigated and Vega was arrested in early April in Virginia, where she was surprisingly again living with O’Connell and their two kids. The judge said he doubted that Vega was the sole perpetrator of the scam. O’Connell said afterward he had “absolutely nothing” to do with it.
