Deaf African-American Student Couldn’t Communicate With White Peers Using Black American Sign Language A deaf African-American college student was surprised to find that the sign language she’d used for the majority of her life was ineffective when she tried to communicate with her white classmates. via The Grio Carolyn McCaskill, is a deaf, African-American woman who has made it her profession to study deaf culture. A professor at Gallaudet University, the famous institution for deaf and hard of hearing students, McCaskill has been ensconced in such learning communities from a young age. But when she entered a racially integrated school for the first time at 15, she was shocked to learn that she could not understand the signs of her fellow students and teachers — because they were white. “I was dumbfounded,” McCaskill told The Washington Post about her ordeal. “I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’” The teenaged McCaskill had to relearn signs for simple words and the correct spaces around her body in which to make them in order to communicate. “I put my signs aside,” she said. An African-American Galludet University student had this to say about the the Black ASL: “We include our culture in our signing,” Mercedes Hunter told the Post. “We make our signs bigger, with more body language,” the hearing African-American student at Gallaudet elaborated, which stresses the “unique flavor” of the communicator. On the 15th of July 2012, I was lucky to see Justin. So close I could almost touch him. It started the night before, I was reading a news article about Justin and it said that he was staying at the Olsen Hotel in Melbourne. I was screaming and was so excited that I knew I could maybe finally see him up close. But I wasn’t sure of it. I didn’t think I would see him but I knew that I wouldn’t leave the next day without seeing him. It was about 9.45am and I had just got on the train with my 2 friends to Justin’s hotel in Melbourne. We got to the hotel and we were hesitant of whether to wait at the front or back of the hotel, but we chose the back because there was camera crew, security and it was the carpark where Justin had been spotted earlier the day before. I got a little nervous and worried that he wouldn’t get out of the car or I wouldn’t see him because there were so many girls! We got there at 11am after taking trains, trams and all sorts of transport. At 12pm a black Mercedes came and parked on the side . We all started screaming and just ran straight for the car. We were all told to wait and be patient and Justin would come to greet us all. So we did. Kind of. We were still screaming when out came the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Justin Bieber. He got out and started signing autographs, taking photos and giving hugs. Then he came over to our side. I tried to touch him but I ended up getting stuck between people. I was not even a meter away from Justin. I looked up and saw his face and I looked at him and he looked back straight at me. Then I started screaming so loud, oh my God. He mimed, “Thank you I love you” to all of us and then got in the car and left. A girl tried to open his car door and get in the car. I saw a black van drive off too and in the front was Kenny! I was right up against the glass and waved at Kenny, he smiled and waved back. Best day of my entire life, the fact Justin came out of the car and spoke to us and interacted with us was unbelievable. My name is Francesca, I’m 15 and I’m from Italy. Justin means everything to me. It was on 2th June 2012 when I met him. At the beginning of the day, it wasn’t a great one for me. My names Georgia and this is My Bieber Experience from New Zealand . I was with my sister and we were actually going to see the Dark Knight (only because I missed winning tickets to Justin’s show). We decided to take a drive by of The Cloud (where his private concert was) and then we saw this swarm of Beliebers running in the other direction. I was like OMG why are they running? Then we see like 2 huge blacked out Mercedes vans and a little mob of cars driving in a line behind. I was like, “That’s Justin F**king Bieber” (followed by a whole lot of inappropriate words). We followed them all the way to like the other end and then we predicted he would come out a specific exit and he did! Then the chase was on and like other beliebers were in their cars following the 2 vans and 2 cars. We thought they may go to the Langham but he had to eat so we kept on following them . They noticed us so decoy cars went in all opposite directions. The other beliebers went and followed the other cars but we decided to stay with the huge van (which then also tried to lose us/ was switching lanes etc.) We ended up loosing them but then my sister predicted another street and sure enough, it was there! Then it randomly stopped in this dark part of the street so we waited and watched the van for like an hour. Then the guy pulled out of the street and went to the dairy; he was like a security guard so I hopped out of the car and went in the dairy as well. He was like looking at me looking like, “WTF GO AWAY” and scanning me up and down (what a creep) and then my sister was like, “No ones in the van.” I was guttered but we waited a bit and watched the van. We went back down the street thinking we just got decoyed away but then we see TWO HUGE BODY GUARDS outside a Japanese restaurant called Cocoro . It was either the Japanese Mafia or Justin. I rang the restaurant and asked if I could make a reservation and they said, “NO SORRY WE’RE FULLY BOOKED.” I then asked if I could order a takeaway. Then the Asian guy was hesitant and said, “Ahhhh sorry, no takeaway tonight.” We clicked that Justin was there! We waited and waited (longest dinner ever) and then Alfredo came out for some air. Kenny came out and shook a person’s hand. We were still hiding in the car because no one was allowed in the restaurant. Finally the same grey van we had followed from the beginning came back! Selena came out and then came Justin! I almost fainted, I was shaking. He flicked his hair and I was like can I have a picture and he said, “Sure you can!” and was so lovely . It was blurry so he was like, “Hang on take another one” and took the iPhone out of my hand and took a picture of us!
