Recordus Shatterum! Harry Potter Swan Song Scores Stunning $95 Million Opening Day

Um, wow . With effortless ease, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has poised itself to break virtually every opening-weekend box-office record known to Hollywood, with Friday’s staggering midnight showing folding into a best-ever $95 million opening day. That far exceeds the earlier record of $72 million set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon in 2009, and sets the Potter finale up for a milestone $180 million (or more) three-day total. Not bad! And still, people saw other movies as well — your Friday Box Office is here.

Friday Box Office: Neverending Story

As expected, the Toy Wonders are running roughshod over both Adam Sandler’s new comedy-in-name-only, Grown Ups , and Tom Cruise’s much-feared Knight and Day . Sandler can at least boast that — if projections are correct — his nearly-perfect string of $40 million opening weekends record remained untarnished. Meanwhile, back in Tom Cruise’s lead-lined, thetan-free mediation chamber, the erstwhile Mr. Mapother is no doubt punching the air in zombie-eyed joy that his movie is not a complete bomb. Hurray! It’s only sorta-bombing! After a bloodless opening day of less than $4 million, it’s picking up steam to head into the station on Sunday with a projected weekend gross of $20 million and a five-day gross of $27 million. Savor the rest of the little victories with us after the jump.

Friday Box Office: Robin Hood On Target

Break up Universal! While the beleaguered studio’s Robin Hood may not have been able to notch the No. 1 spot on Friday, It will gladly take a $13 million opening on the way to a likely $36 million weekend. (It will handily break $100 million worldwide). That’s about $10 million off the pace of Iron Man 2 , which suffered a Friday-to-Friday drop of more than 70 percent. Letters to Juliet and Just Wright opened at what you might call “modest” and “soft,” respectively, while A Nightmare on Elm Street closed off the Top 5 for the last time in its lucrative, miserable run. Full figures after the jump.

Michael Jackson: Bigger Than Edward Cullen!

You’ve finally met your match, Robert Pattinson . While tickets for The Twilight Saga: New Moon have been selling out faster than Kim Kardashian when faced with a QuickTrim offer , the film is no longer Fandango’s most popular selection. Instead, the film site ranks Michael Jackson’s This Is It as the most anticipated flick of the fall season
