Fuzzy Movieline Math: How Many People Will Watch the Emmys on Sunday?

Only a shade more than 13 million people tuned in to watch the Emmy Awards on CBS last year… and it was considered a moderate success because of its competition (a Giants/Cowboys NFL game), calendar placement (September 20) and the prior year’s record low numbers. On Sunday, the battle for eyeballs will be slightly less uphill, but Jimmy Fallon and Co. still have their work cut out for them . Just how many of the Nielsen estimated 294-plus million American TV watchers will tune in though? Click ahead as Movieline attempts to sort it all out.

Non-Believers Giving Aid – Support Haiti, Pakistan and Humanity!

Richard Dawkins organization to support people in need… no matter what country they reside in. The situation in Pakistan is grave. The UN estimates that 20 million people have been affected by the worst monsoon-related floods in living memory, with tens of thousands of villages entirely under water. 8 million people are in need of immediate assistance, including food and medical aid, and 4.6m of these have been left without shelter. With 700,000 hectares of crops destroyed or under water, severe food shortages are inevitable and this, together with concerns about outbreaks of cholera and other potentially fatal diseases, is leading aid agencies to warn that the death toll is likely to rise dramatically. You can find out more about the crisis from the Special Report on the BBC News website. Non-Believers Giving Aid and the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science are once more partnering with M

How to Turn a Toothbrush Into Gold

Image via Ellie Marie When I first started Terracycle, I spent a lot of my time explaining what upcycling was . It was this foreign concept whose name wasn’t on a lot of people’s radar. Now, a handful of years later, more than 10 million people are collecting the brand specific waste that we’ve used to make a range of products; it has become increasingly common and may some day be as conventional as recycling. Currently, several startups are building their busi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Islands of Garbage Filling China’s Three Gorges Dam

Image via China Daily Torrential rain in China has caused extreme flooding , affecting at least 134 million people in 28 provinces. But many more could be impacted due to another major issue caused by the rain. Massive islands of trash are threatening the Three Gorges Dam area, with some patches so thick people can actually walk on it. Nearly 3,000 tons of garbage is being collected daily from the dam, but it might prove to be too much for limited equipment and workers. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Hong Kong typhoon warning April 19 2010

The Hong Kong Observatory said meteorologists within the next few hours may issue a warning, called a No. 3 Strong Wind Signal, indicating sustained winds may reach 41 kph to 62 kph with gusts of more than 110 kph. The storm may exacerbate flooding in China, where rainfall since July 1 has affected about 38 million people and forced the relocation of 1.3 million in 11 provinces, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said last week. Eleven people were missing after a landslide in China’s southwest provi

Britney Spears Glee Episode: Confirmed!

That would-be Britney Spears-themed episode of Glee the singer’s manager Tweeted about in a shameless attempt to cash in on the Fox series’ buzz? It’s totally on! We’re as surprised as anyone, but show creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he’s writing an episode dedicated to her. More than 13.5 million people tuned in to a Madonna-inspired episode last April. Can a Britney-themed episode come close to that total? Probably. Will it be any good? That’s another story. GIMME MORE GLEE! Britney Spears’ music is coming to the second season of the hit show. Hopefully the Glee cast all goes to Starbucks in honor of the pop princess . Not everyone on the show, which was nominated for 19 Emmys, will be thrilled. Last May, Matthew Morrison, who plays Will Schuester, actually scoffed at the idea : “I hope our show doesn’t go along that route,” he said. We sort of hoped they wouldn’t, too, but perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised. It just doesn’t seem like she has the kind of catalog or musical style to fit the show. Lady Gaga and Madonna have more vocal talent. Breathy moans, suggestive lyrics and auto-tuning might sell records, but how will they translate on the program? What Britney song would make the best Glee cover?

Possible Signs of Methane-Based Life on Titan

Something is consuming hydrogen and organic molecules on Saturn's moon Titan, and the recipe matches astrobiologists' theories about possible methane-based life. Granted, there may be other chemical explanations — it's just that no one knows what they are yet. New data from the Cassini spacecraft show hydrogen is disappearing near Titan's surface. What's more, scientists have not been able to find acetylene, an organic molecule that should be pretty abundant in the moon's thick atmosphere. All this fits very nicely with a theory from NASA astrobiologist Chris McKay, who proposed five years ago that microbial life on Titan could breathe hydrogen and eat acetylene, producing methane as a result. Scientists emphasize that the findings are not proof of life, and there's plenty of work to do before non-biological causes can be ruled out. Scientific conservatism suggests that a biological explanation should be the last choice after all non-biological explanations are addressed,” says Mark Allen of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., in a NASA release. The good news is that even if life is ruled out, the non-biological explanations are still interesting. According to previous studies, hydrogen should be distributed pretty evenly throughout Titan's atmosphere. But it's disappearing at the surface. “It's as if you have a hose and you're squirting hydrogen onto the ground, but it's disappearing,” says Darrell Strobel, a Cassini interdisciplinary scientist based at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., who authored a paper published in the journal Icarus. It's possible that the hydrogen is combining with carbon on Titan's surface to produce methane. But Titan is too cold for that to happen quickly enough to account for all the missing hydrogen. An unknown mineral could be the culprit, meaning scientists may have found a new substance previously unknown to exist on Titan. The explanations for the dearth of acetylene are equally puzzling. The hydrocarbon should form abundantly in icy aerosols in Titan's atmosphere, but it's not there. It's possible that sunlight or cosmic rays are transforming the acetylene into more complex molecules that would fall to the ground with no acetylene signature, according to NASA. It's also possible that chemical reactions are transforming acetylene into benzene (which Cassini did observe on Titan's surface), but that would require a catalyst, which hasn't been identified. There's one more thing: Cassini observed an organic compound with the benzene that scientists have not been able to identify. Cassini has several more Titan flybys in which to gather data — in fact, the craft is set to fly within 2,000 miles of Titan's surface this afternoon, to make infrared scans of the moon's north polar region. The region includes Kraken Mare, the largest lake on Titan, which covers a greater area than the Caspian Sea on Earth. If methane-based microbes do live on Titan, there's a good chance they would live in just those sort of lakes. http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-06/new-cassini-findings-hint-methane-… added by: pjacobs51

How to Solve the World’s Toilet Crisis

According the U.S. State Department, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF, the world's greatest infectious killer is not malaria, AIDS, or TB, but poop. An estimated 2.6 billion people, about 40% of the world's population, including 1 billion children, have no access to toilets of any kind and must practice open defecation. The result is a continual pandemic of intestinal afflictions that kill 2 million people a year. In this episode of Vanguard, Adam Yamaguchi travels to India and Indonesia to see how the toiletless world deals with poop. It's in the streets, in the fields and, most dangerously, in the very water from which they drink. When it doesn't go down the toilet, poop is everywhere. Adam travels to India and Singapore to investigate what's being done to curb this silent epidemic. “The World's Toilet Crisis” airs Wednesday, June 9 at 10/9c. ‘American Idol’ Finale Ratings The Lowest Since Season One

Just over 24 million people tuned in to see Lee DeWyze crowned the season-nine winner. By Ryan J. Downey Lee DeWyze performs as the new American Idol Photo: Kristian Dowling/FOX/PictureGroup/AP The last time an “American Idol” finale had this few viewers, Justin and Kelly were contestants. Just over 24 million people tuned in to watch last night’s conclusion of season nine, the smallest audience for an “American Idol” season finale since season one in 2002, according to a ratings report in Variety. The first season of Fox’s “American Idol” concluded with Kelly Clarkson winning the title over runner-up Justin Guarini. Since then, the show has created a small army of stars, not the least of which is judge Simon Cowell, who will not return for the show’s 10th season. While the season-nine finale bested the competition from other networks, its overall performance (which included the worst demographic scores in the show’s history, Variety reported) is the latest blow to the pop-culture juggernaut after a season filled with critical groaning over everything from song selections to host Ryan Seacrest’s behavior . It was the first season to feature Ellen DeGeneres as a judge, the first without Paula Abdul and the second with Kara DioGuardi. Lee DeWyze took the crown Wednesday night, though his victory was largely overshadowed by Cowell’s farewell. Also taking center stage was a string of high-profile performances, including ones from Janet Jackson , who sang new ballad “Nothing” and got her groove on for “Nasty”; Christina Aguilera , who transitioned from “Fighter” to Bionic single “You Lost Me”; and Bret Michaels , who told MTV News backstage that he hadn’t cleared his “Idol” duet with third-place finisher Casey James on “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with his doctors.
