Steven Tyler: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

As Aerosmith frontman kicks off TV gig, we look back on the rocker’s decades-long highs and lows as part of iconic band. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Steven Tyler has seen it all. The famously loud and proud singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith has experienced the highest highs of the music business, as well as the deepest depths of career (and personal) misery. In other words, he’s perfectly qualified to be a judge on “American Idol.” Though his selection as part of the new three-judge panel on America’s favorite reality singing show was somewhat of a left-field surprise to his bandmates, the program’s fans and many critics, Tyler seems excited and enthusiastic about the gig as season 10 gets under way Wednesday night. He recently admitted that he hadn’t really watched the show before because of his busy schedule with the Boston-bred hard rock icons (and, ahem, the occasional trip to rehab), but Tyler told The Daily Beast that he sees his “Idol” run as a new wrinkle in his four-decade-plus career. “Television is just an extension of what I’ve always done,” he said. “I don’t think people have seen that Italian side of me, the side of me that can work a room like nobody’s business. It’s what I am. It’s something that people haven’t seen unless there was a party backstage after a show because that ominous person that’s out of his mind onstage is not the same guy that’s sitting in front of cameras.” He’s been everywhere, seen everything and lived to tell about it. Clearly, if there’s anyone who knows what it takes to be a star — and to have enduring success — it’s Tyler. He formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970, along with guitarist and longtime foil Joe Perry, winning over a loyal fanbase thanks to their white-hot, blues-drenched live sets and Tyler’s magnetic stage presence. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1972 and began an ultra-successful run that spanned the remainder of the decade, releasing classics albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, along with iconic singles like “Dream On,” “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” Long story short, the success led to excess and the band limped into the ’80s without Perry. A career resurgence in the late ’80s and early ’90s put Aerosmith back on top of their game with a new generation of radio-friendly hits and the bandmates’ newfound sobriety. In the 2000s, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and release albums. But in 2009, during an Aerosmith gig at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, Tyler fell off the stage into the crowd, leading to the cancellation of their summer tour and then a string of rumors that he’d left the band to pursue a solo career. Yet, despite all of that, Aerosmith still hit the road again this past summer, with Tyler very much onboard after another stint in rehab. So, why, after one of the most successful runs in rock history, would the frontman head to “American Idol”? Sirius satellite radio host Howard Stern asked his old friend that question on Tuesday morning (January 18), and Tyler said it made perfect sense to him. “It was just taking something else other than Aerosmith, it doesn’t mean the band’s over,” said Tyler, 62, noting that last summer’s tour was one of the best he could remember, but that he needed a bit of a break to help him heal from his chronic foot condition. “I needed a rest for [my foot] and it was just something else I could get into. I wanted to see if this would be a good fit.” Setting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz and, after whittling down 700 contestants to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show. When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” After seeing a couple dozen singers who blew him away, Tyler admitted that he’s looking for the whole package: vocals, songwriting ability and the originality that marks a star. “I just thought, ‘What the f—? I get to sit next to J. Lo? … I’m looking for the [Janis] Joplin, the Christina Aguilera. Someone that’s not being Vocoded and trimmed and primped and done up. I’m looking for that natural person that can go in and sing … and the times that I found one, I teared up out there.” As for whether the show will break up the band, which has endured epic battles with drugs, jealousy and managerial interference, Tyler said, simply, hell no. ” ‘Idol’ ‘s gonna take this band up 10 notches!” he promised. ‘American Idol’ Fan Anthony Hopkins Loves Randy Jackson’s ‘Soul’

‘He’s so fair with everyone,’ the ‘Rite’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Anthony Hopkins Photo: MTV News Anthony Hopkins is a veteran actor of the stage and screen and an Oscar winner knighted by the queen of England for his services to the arts. With so many movies to make and other important, knightly things to do, one would never think of Sir Hopkins as a super-fan of “American Idol” — yet he is. We had heard that he was a fan back in 2009, so much so that he’d happily star in a movie version of the singing reality competition . So when MTV News caught up with the esteemed thespian while he promoted his upcoming exorcism thriller “The Rite,” we had to ask if he were excited about the show’s season 10 premiere Wednesday (January 19). ” ‘American Idol’? Oh, yeah, I love all those [talent shows],” he said. “Somebody says they’re ‘chewing gum for the mind,’ but they’re entertaining. … My wife makes me watch them; I don’t,” he joked before admitting that he and his wife TiVo every episode. “I went to one or two of the shows and met Simon Cowell,” he revealed. “Somebody I really like is Randy Jackson. We became friends, although I don’t see much of him. I think we invited him to the premiere of [‘The Rite’].” Hopkins went on to say that he likes Jackson’s spirit and did a little impression of the veteran “Idol” judge’s trademark phrase. “He’s a terrific guy. I love his soul,” Hopkins said. ” ‘Hey, dawg!’ I think he’s terrific. I love his compassion, because he’s so fair with everyone.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Regis Philbin Retires From ‘Live! With Regis And Kelly’

28-year talk-show veteran says hosting ‘was the biggest thrill of my life.’ By Jocelyn Vena Regis Philbin Photo: Jason Kempin/Getty Images After 28 years as the co-host of “Live!” Regis Philbin announced Tuesday (January 18) that he will retire. Philbin told viewers live on-air that this will be his last year hosting the morning talk show mainstay. “It’s been a long time: It’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it,” he explained , with co-host Kelly Ripa by his side. “Everything must come to an end for certain people on-camera, especially certain old people,” he joked. Further information about when Philbin’s last day will be or who might replace him was not announced, however he added, “This is gonna happen sometime the end of the summer or fall. We’ll have a lot of fun between now and then!” Ripa, who has been hosting the show with Philbin for nearly a decade, added , “I think I can only speak for America, and all of us here, when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true. And I wish I could do something to change your mind.” Ripa joined Philbin in 2001 after current “Today” host Kathie Lee Gifford left the show in 2000. Gifford was the show’s second co-host: It began in 1983 with the name “The Morning Show” and Cyndy Garvey by Philbin’s side. Gifford replaced Garvey in 1985. Three years later, the show went national and gained the “Live! With Regis And Kathie Lee” moniker. TMZ reports that Ripa had no idea Philbin was going to make the announcement Tuesday. Sources told the website the daytime vet alerted his co-host of the announcement only 15 minutes before they went live. The source adds that Ripa was “stunned,” but “she wasn’t upset.” Philbin reportedly decided to stay mum until the last minute for fear that the news might leak. Are you surprised by Regis Philbin’s retirement? Tell us in the comments!

Ryan Gosling Still ‘Processing’ Meeting Bruce Willis

At Golden Globes afterparty, MTV News pressed the ‘Blue Valentine’ star for details moments after his exchange with the action hero. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bruce Willis and Ryan Gosling meet for the first time at the Weinstien Golden Globes afterparty Photo: MTV News One of the best things about covering awards-show red carpets — in addition to all of the glamorous fashion — is getting to watch all of the celebrity-on-celebrity interactions. A particularly exciting exchange went down at a Golden Globes afterparty hosted by the Weinsteins, where MTV News looked on as A-list actors Bruce Willis and Ryan Gosling met for the first time. We were lucky enough to chat with Gosling moments after the big introduction so, of course, we had to ask what he and Willis had discussed, whether the seasoned action star imparted any wisdom to Gosling and so forth. “I can’t talk about it,” Gosling quipped. Sensing that the “Blue Valentine” star was holding back but secretly wanted to share some exciting tidbit with us, we pressed further, asking whether he was able to secure a part in “Die Hard 5” during their brief conversation. “No comment,” Gosling responded with a smile. Fair enough. We ceased our probing and instead asked Gosling if it was in fact the first time he’d ever met the veteran actor. “[That was the] first time I ever met Bruce Willis,” Gosling confirmed. “I know, it’s nice. I haven’t had time to process it because I’m trying to talk about him. I don’t know how I feel about it.” In spite of making introductions with numerous photographers and TV crews present, Gosling said he thought the exchange, though short, went well. “I do feel good [about it],” he said. “I wanted it to be more private. In my mind, it wasn’t in front of all these people.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Blue Valentine.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Sammi: ‘Nobody’s Hard To With Fight In That House’

‘Winning isn’t everything, but I’m proud of standing up,’ Sammi says of coming to blows with housemates like JWoww. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Sammi Photo: MTV News Last week’s “Jersey Shore” premiere ended with a mid-punch cliffhanger as Sammi and JWoww went at each other , grabbing fistfuls of hair extensions and clawing at each other’s faces. Who would win? The scrum picked up again Thursday night (January 13) and, as we should have suspected, nobody really wins when it comes to intra-cast brawling on the hit reality show, do they? That’s not to say the girls seem to regret brawling or that another fight couldn’t happen in the future. Because according to Sammi, she’s not scared of any of her castmates. “Nobody’s hard to fight with in that house,” she told MTV News recently. Sammi doesn’t mean that as some sort of hear-me-roar intimidation tactic. In fact, she professes to hate fighting and confessed, “I never fought anybody in my entire life until Miami.” But since the cast’s trip to Florida — fight she has. And each time, she hasn’t backed down from going at JWoww, who Sammi says is a much more experienced fighter. “I’m very stern in my opinions and I speak my mind,” she said. “Winning isn’t everything, but I’m proud of standing up [for myself], for never fighting before. For somebody who fights all the time to somebody who doesn’t fight, I’m a little bit proud of myself for just sticking up. “That’s just who I am — I stick up for myself,” she added. “I don’t care if I win, I don’t care if I lose, I’m just stern in my beliefs and my opinions.” Don’t miss “Jersey Shore,” airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
