Rick Ross Was ‘In Awe’ Of Jay-Z During Teflon Don Studio Session

‘He’s rubbing his head, like he puling his rhymes outta his mind,’ Ross recalls of Hov. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross says it was a process — an extremely entertaining process — that led up to the night Jay-Z recorded his verse for a yet-untitled record from Ross’ upcoming LP, Teflon Don. The rapper went to the last stop on Hov’s Blueprint 3 tour in Las Vegas and collaborated on a song he described as an atomic bomb. “You party in Tao [in Vegas] till 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning,” Ross said of how they kick off a session. “Twenty-five bottles of Ace [Of Spades]; 7 a.m., you was just hitting the crap tables. It’s 9-ish, 10-ish, so focused though [once you go to the studio]. That was the beauty in our bond — our respect for one another. I don’t just e-mail records or have somebody drop off a beat. “I was a roadie on the Blueprint 3 tour for a few dates,” he explained off tagging along with Hov. “It started off in St. Louis. I was just messing with everybody, kicking it with everybody, letting Jay hear my ideas and concepts. When you get the deluxe version of this album, we documented when I played the record. I played the track and my first verse,” Ross recalled. “I put in the PS3 behind the stage. “Played it, [Jay] listened to it,” he continued. “We played it, backed it up, played it again. Played it, backed it up, played it again. Backed it up, and he spit his verse. It’s gonna be magic for people to see Jay do his “Rain [Man]” when he’s rubbing his head, like he puling his rhymes outta his mind. Just to see somebody come up with a verse that potent in less than two or three minutes … ’cause it was just a snippet. The beat may have played for a minute and a half and started over,” a process Ross says was repeated a few times as Jay composed. “He had his 16, an idea for the chorus. Trey Songz, all of us standing around in awe.” Ross said he’s still shocked that Jay came with a verse so fresh in such a short amount of time. “It’s most definitely a surreal feeling,” the Bawse added. “Something that’s real hard to describe. When you have that camaraderie with someone, and you all continue to raise the bar somewhat — it blowed the whole room. Shout out to [Jay-Z cohorts] O.G. Juan, Tah Tah. One of the words I said in my verse, it triggered something in [Jay’s] mind. He had so many things to say about it. The content of the record, it’s gonna answer a lot of things that’s been circulating. It’s going to be moving.” The Miami native said the song doesn’t have a title yet because he wants to be very deliberate about naming what he thinks will be an atomic record. “It’s still untitled. I have two or three ideas. But you know, the chorus is so powerful. It’s two or three words that’s said, I just haven’t decided. But we took it to that next level.” Are you excited to hear the new offering from Ross and Jay? Let us know in the comments! Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘American Idol’ Finale Spot

Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘Idol’ Finale Spot By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox visits her hometown of Toledo, Ohio Photo: Getty Images Though she didn’t appear to have the same kind of moment Lee DeWyze did on Tuesday, Crystal Bowersox’s did plenty to earn herself a slot in next week’s season-nine finale , according to her hometown friends. “Crystal left no doubt in my mind last night that she should win this,” said John Schafer, who has booked Bowersox at Maumee, Ohio’s Village Idiot bar dozens of times. “[Her] ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ was a chilling rendition of McCartney’s song that I’d bet he’d be proud of.” Perhaps he’s biased, but Schafer disagreed with the judges on their assessment of DeWyze’s take on Leonard Cohen’s oft-covered “Hallelujah,” calling it a “pale effort.” Even though he’s not a big Melissa Etheridge fan, Schafer thought Bowersox nailed her cover of “Come to My Window,” which he suspected would also make the original’s author proud. And while he thought Lee chose well with his cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” he again felt it didn’t do much with the song and wasn’t that impressive. “I guess I’m saying that Crystal’s version of both songs could be substituted for the originals, and Lee’s could not,” he said. Nate Woodward, a cook and bartender at the Village Idiot and a good friend of Bowersox’s, was in the audience for Tuesday night’s performance. It was his second trip out to Los Angeles to see her on the show, and he agreed that MamaSox should be onstage next week. But he also admitted that it felt like DeWyze did a better job than Crystal, though he said she was clearly superior to Casey James. “I’m pretty sure she’ll make it through to the top two,” Woodward said, still a bit groggy after getting an early wake-up call to discuss the show. “I thought both of Crystal’s songs were awesome,” he said, referring to the Etheridge tune and an Ellen DeGeneres-picked cover of McCartney’s solo hit. Woodward said the studio audience seemed clearly stacked with screaming teenage DeWyze fans, with a smaller contingent of Bowersox backers and a much less-vocal group of James supporters. He didn’t get a chance to talk to Crystal after the show, but Woodward said he spoke to her after Monday’s rehearsal, and she was feeling “super pumped” about both songs. “The reaction in the room as great,” he said about the studio audience’s feeling about Bowersox’s songs. “Everyone around us was talking about how well she did. I’m gonna be nervous as hell tonight. But hopefully she makes it through, and it will be exciting.” How do you think Crystal did on “Idol” Tuesday night? Share your reviews in the comments. Lee DeWyze’s Friends Confident He’ll Make ‘American Idol’ Finale

‘There is no doubt in my mind, and never has been, that this kid is going to the finale,’ Amy Silverman tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX Nobody wants to get too cocky, because, well, you never know how America is going to act, but on Wednesday morning (May 19), Lee DeWyze’s supporters were feeling pretty bullish about the former paint-store clerk ‘s chances of making it to the “American Idol” finale next week. “Seriously? What can I say, but unbelievable!” said Amy Silverman, Lee’s close friend and former teacher at Forest View Alternative school, which the 24-year-old singer attended after dropping out of his more traditional high school. “He is truly the greatest that has ever been on that stage, and he proved that last night with ‘Simple Man’ and ‘Hallelujah’ ! We had over 500 people that filled the entire restaurant/bar . Goose bumps and tears were flowing throughout the entire place.” Silverman said she could not stop shedding tears of pride and joy at seeing how far the onetime troubled teen has come. “The thing about Lee is, he touches every single person that listens to him … from 5-year-olds to 85-year-olds. … There is no doubt in my mind, and never has been, that this kid is going to the finale, and I am honored to be able to be there, watching with pride and excitement!” Brian Friedopfer, an old friend of Lee’s who has watched his pal sing “Simple Man” for years in karaoke bars and at shows, said he was shaking for an hour after Tuesday night’s show. “I was just so happy for him. It’s about time,” Friedopfer said of watching the breakout performance night he knew was coming from his friend. “I was speechless. My wife and I were watching [the ‘Hallelujah’ cover] together, and we looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow!’ We rewound it and watched it again and said, ‘Holy crap!’ I’ve never heard him sing that song, and I was a bit worried about it when he told me that Simon chose it for him.” But Lee reassured Friedopfer that he could tackle the iconic Leonard Cohen tune that has famously been covered by everyone from the late Jeff Buckley to former “Idol” contestants Jason Castro and Tim Urban. “Before he started, I was really nervous, but as soon as he started singing, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “When I was in Los Angeles during Elvis Week , he joked that at some point, he would have a full choir behind him for one song, and of course, he pulled it out the week before the finale!” The performances left Friedopfer convinced that Lee will make it to the finale — well, assuming America wasn’t so blown away they forgot to vote. “He should be there, but it’s anybody’s game, because people are finicky,” he said. “Especially since they basically crowned him last night, he might have lost votes because of that. But people like an underdog, and it would be a shame if he wasn’t in the finale.” Do you think Lee is a lock for the finale? Let us know in the comments! ‘Glee’ Star Matthew Morrison Doesn’t Want To Bash Newsweek Writer

‘I think we should be kind of teaching him,’ actor says of writer who criticized gay actors. By Jocelyn Vena Matthew Morrison Photo: MTV News There has been much debate since Newsweek ‘s website posted a column in which Ramin Setoodeh argues that openly gay actors can’t play straight well. It has caused an uproar in the gay community, as well as with the cast and crew of “Glee,” since the article calls out actor Jonathan Groff for not being convincingly straight as Jesse St. James on the show. “Glee” star Matthew Morrison spoke to MTV News about the controversy. “I think [show creator] Ryan Murphy kind of summed it up best,” Morrison told MTV News on Monday at the Fox upfront presentation . “He actually invited the writer to come hang out with him and the writing team on ‘Glee,’ and I think that’s a great approach.” Morrison said that while it’s easy to criticize Setoodeh, who is gay himself, he likes Murphy’s approach of trying to change his mind about the matter. “Because everyone’s kind of bashing this guy, and I think we should be kind of teaching him,” Morrison explained. “So, I think that’s what Ryan, his goal was, by doing that.” At the junket for “Sex and the City 2,” openly gay actress Cynthia Nixon said she wanted to ask the writer why he said the things he did in the article. “I think it’s horrible. I think it’s so horrible,” she told MTV News. “And I think it’s really, really, really terrific that there has been such an enormous response and so much back-and-forth and discussion about it and people trying to explain to this gentleman why they’re so upset about what he wrote.” What would you ask Ramin Setoodeh if you had the chance? Man Mistaken For Sex Offender Killed

Two men have been arrested in connection to the slaying of a man inside his Bithlo trailer. Deputies pulled Robert Pascale from a wooded area Thursday evening near the Fifth Avenue trailer where Hugh Edwards, 79, was found dead on Wednesday. Investigators said Pascale was found by a bloodhound in a muddy pond with only his face exposed for air. Pascale is at the Orange County Jail charged with first-degree murder. He told WKMG-TV that he mistakenly beat the wrong man. When reporters asked him if he thought his alleged victim was a sex offender, he replied, “I thought he was, and the only thing running through my mind is what my uncle did to me.” Pascale continued, “I hit him with a bat twice.” A woman told deputies she was drinking at a trailer on Fifth Avenue with some acquaintances Tuesday night when one of Pascale's friends, Michael Garay, asked her what she would do if a sex offender lived next door. The woman told deputies she said, “I would kill him.” The woman told deputies that Pascale, 20, and Garay, 32, then went into a neighbor's trailer and she heard thumping sounds. She said the men then got in her car and drove a block away to get rid of a baseball bat. Although Edwards had a similar name and age as a registered sex offender, sheriff's officials said Edwards had absolutely no criminal record and was not a registered sex offender. added by: Omnomynous

‘Machete’ Star Don Johnson On Comedy, Working With Robert De Niro, More

‘It’s kind of a fun time for me because I don’t have to be a slave to the former Don Johnson image or any of that,’ the actor says. By Kara Warner Don Johsnon Photo: Getty Images Any day is a good day to chat with Don Johnson — especially when it involves discussing his role in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming star-studded blood-fest “Machete.” MTV recently caught up with Johnson to discuss his upcoming projects, watching “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges” in syndication and a possible “new era” of Don Johnson acting. MTV : So first off, let’s start with the trailer that everyone was talking about this weekend. It’s a great trailer and the greatest moment in the trailer is clearly the “Introducing Don Johnson” moment. Don Johnson : [ Laughs. ] Yeah, that was a fun one. [I was] sort of a late addition to the cast and by the time I got there, all the specialized credits like “with” and “and” and “featuring” and all that other stuff were taken. I think [Robert] De Niro got “and” and Lindsay [Lohan] got “with” or who knows. So we were kicking it around and my manager Jason Weinberg said, “How about ‘introducing’?” and we laughed. So they ran it by Robert and Robert cracked up. He said, “Absolutely, let’s go with that.” MTV : It’s an awesome moment. What did you think when you saw the trailer? Johnson : Well, you know, to me it looks just like great fun, in the vein of the old exploitation pictures like Harvey Korman and all of those guys. Robert and I were texting each other a couple of days ago when it came out and I was telling him how fun the trailer looked and I said, “And timely” and he said, “Yeah, like exploitation of your ripped-from-the-headlines stuff.” MTV : Absolutely. Johnson : It’s fun and working with De Niro was, we’ve been friends for 25 or 30 years and it was a thrill to get to work with him. MTV : And it looks like he’s having some fun with the part too, as is with most of the cast. This is the kind of film where you can just sort of let it hang out. Johnson : That’s exactly right — we’re all eating the scenery right and left. MTV : So most of your scenes are with De Niro? Johnson : All of my scenes were with De Niro, I think, except for one — and then I think I’m on the phone with him. [ Laughs. ] MTV : Did you know [director Robert] Rodriguez before this? Johnson : Oh yeah, I knew him from Cheech, so he was in San Francisco one time and I cast up to visit Cheech and I said, “Well, while you’re here I’m going to put you to work.” So I put him in “Nash Bridges” as the commercial filmmaker. And he literally shot some footage of a salsa party in my apartment, in Nash’s apartment with Cheech. He shot it on digital-8 and we used his footage in the show and we just had a great time. He’s a wonderful, wonderful filmmaker and a great friend. MTV : What can you say about the character you’re playing in “Machete”? Johnson : Well, he’s a gun-toting vigilante; it was just a great hoot for me to get to play someone who is so diametrically opposed to my being. And, you know, all of the characters are drawn very broadly and, you know, it’s fun. Like you said, Robert’s kind of, “Let’s roar with it.” MTV : So we were talking about the introduction in the credits — does it feel like a reintroduction for you? Do you feel like this is marking another stage of your career? Johnson : I think that we all end up reinventing ourselves all the time. And with me, I’ve got a comedy coming up this summer with Adam Sandler’s company called “Born to Be a Star” which I play a porn director named Miles Deep. And I’ve just finished a pilot for ABC that is a half-hour sitcom. So, at any rate, in answer to your question, I don’t know. The focus on comedy is a little different. And it’s kind of a fun time for me because I don’t have to be a slave to the former Don Johnson image or any of that. I can kind of wing it and do what I was trained to do. MTV : How was working with Sandler and company? Johnson : Oh my God, those guys are the greatest. … When we were making the picture I would text Sandler and [Jason] Schwartzman back and forth and I would sign off as “Your deepness.” What a blast. It was so much fun and I got to create this character who was a complete wild man and it should be fun. MTV : It sounds like with “Machete” and “Born to Be a Star” you have to have a sense of humor about yourself. Do you feel you’ve always had a sense of humor about yourself? Johnson : No, I think it was quite the opposite. I think I’ve developed a sense of humor after I got rid of that fame disease. And the joy of doing the work and working these days is so much greater. I’m having a lot of fun with it. MTV : “Miami Vice” seems to be on the air more and more and “Nash Bridges” is probably also in syndication. What runs through your mind on either of the shows at this point? Johnson : You know they’re on, they’re both on simultaneously in syndication in 130 countries around the world and it’s a real sense of accomplishment. I love it, but by the same token, I don’t watch them. MTV : What did you make of Michael Mann’s big-screen “Miami Vice” interpretation? Was that an odd feeling to sort of see his new take on it? Johnson : I didn’t see it all the way through; I saw bits and pieces and what I saw you accurately put it, it was Michael’s interpretation of it. And Michael, you know, look this a longer conversation than a sound bite on that. I think that Michael is an enormously talented director and he went out to make a new version of an iconic television show. I think that’s a challenge in any way you look at it, because you’re never going to please everybody and those images are so heavily engraved in everybody’s consciousness. I didn’t run into a lot of people that were … it was apples and oranges you know — it was kind of sort of the same thing but not. ‘Eclipse’ Clip Shows Volturi Scheming In Seattle

Dakota Fanning and company watch the newborn vampires’ chaos in brand-new clip. By Eric Ditzian Photo: Summit Entertainment Robert Pattinson , Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner don’t need to get all the attention, do they? With the “Twilight” trio set to appear together Thursday (May 13) on an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Summit Entertainment released a brand-new clip from “Eclipse” in which none of them appears. Instead the footage, which debuted as an iTunes exclusive , focuses on Dakota Fanning’s Jane and her crew of Volturi vampire badasses, giving us our closest look yet at their roles in “Eclipse.” And the 40-second clip is doubly interesting because this scene does not appear in the book on which the film is based. The scene opens as the Volturi, the Italy-based royalty of the vampire world, look down upon a collection of newborn vampires sowing chaos on the city streets. These just-turned bloodsuckers were created by Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) with the express purpose of destroying Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his family, as well as Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart). The Volturi watch the Seattle newborns feed on humans, overturn cars and generally create an atmosphere of violent chaos. “They’ve already drawn too much attention,” Demetri (Charlie Bewley) says. “So has our inaction,” Felix (Daniel Cudmore) responds. “Others may begin to question the Volturi’s effectiveness.” But the diminutive Jane is not buying this call for a show of strength. “Let them,” she says, her blood-red eyes unblinking. Felix remains unsatisfied. “Maybe we should consult with Aro,” he suggests. It’s then that we see Jane’s abilities on full display. She can inflict incapacitating pain with only her thoughts — a special ability she developed after being burned at the stake as a child. As she holds Felix using only her mind, Jane’s brother Alec (Cameron Bright) looks on. “Aro’s decisions are being watched,” she says cryptically. “Either we let them do what they were created for, or we end them. Decisions, decisions.” What do you think of this scene and its departure from Stephenie Meyer’s “Eclipse”? Share your thoughts in the comments.
