WV Coal Mine Explosion, 6 Dead, 21 Unaccounted For

Six miners were killed and at least 21 unaccounted for Monday in an explosion at an underground coal mine, the state mining director said. Ron Wooten said the blast was reported around 3 p.m. at Massey Energy Co.'s Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston. The company did not provide details on the extent of the damage or if other miners had been rescued. A Boone County ambulance dispatcher also said he has the same number of fatalities and missing miners. The mine is operated by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co. It has caches of extra oxygen along emergency escape routes and airtight refuge chambers designed to provide enough air to keep miners alive for four days if they can't make their way out, according to Randy Harris, an engineering consultant who oversees installation of high-tech gear. Five highly trained mine rescue teams from Conso Energy and Massey were on the scene as well as part of the state Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training team, MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said. The large mine produced 1.2 million tons of coal in 2009, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and has about 200 employees, most of whom work underground. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne may be away for the moment , but the rapper is making sure he’s not forgotten while he’s gone. The imprisoned superstar launched a new Web site on Friday (April 2), WeezyThanxYou.com , where he’ll post weekly updates, blog about sports and respond to letters he’s received from fans since he began his prison stint last month. “Your letter was so thoughtful and sincere,” he wrote in response to Nurris Terrero of New York. “The way you worded everything left me in awe. Please send suggestions on books I should read. I look forward to checking them out.” In the first posting, Wayne explains that he’s been spending his days working out and reading the bible. The rapper also announced he will revive his popular ESPN blog, where in the past he opined on various sports. Next week’s scheduled post will be on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Wayne, a father of four, said his family has been most pressing on his mind during his sentence. “My kids race through my mind all day. They know they were created with love, so love is how their life will be defined. I just hope my love and adoration for them provides a temporary bandage on a wound I unknowingly inflicted on them.” “I’m in good spirits man, for real,” he wrote, contradicting rumors he had been involved in an altercation at Rikers Island . In addition to the postings, the site features a clock that counts down how much time the rapper has until his release. It currently rests at 215 days. Fans can also purchase merchandise on WeezyThanxYou.com, including “Free Weezy” Young Money T-shirts. The site was created by Lil Wayne in conjunction with popular hip-hop bloggers Karen Civil and Karla “hustleGRL” Moy. “Weezy explained to me the idea behind WeezyThanxYou.com, which will basically serve as his gateway to the free world,” Civil said in a statement to MTV News. “The site will allow the Young Money quarterback to post daily status updates as well as answer fan questions. ‘I wanted to do something for my fans, so they know I am still with them and that I love them very much,’ Wayne told me not too long ago. Kelly — whom he’s regularly criticized in song and interviews — but that doesn’t mean they share a friendly relationship. In the upcoming April/May issue of Vibe, Songz again talks about Kelly, accusing him of jacking R&B singer/songwriter Aaron Hall’s style. The “Say Aah” singer admits he’s done the same with Kelly’s style, injecting some of the embattled star’s subtleties into his music. The result, Songz’s Ready album, is his most successful project to date. “People say, ‘Well, I hear a lot of R. Kelly in your music.’ So what?” Songz told the magazine, which hits newsstands April 13 “R. Kelly took Aaron Hall’s whole style. Two albums straight. … You can say what you want about me.” The Virginia native lashed out against Kelly on a mixtape for the singer’s use of Auto-Tune, claiming he was chasing trends instead of paving the way. The pair have been tossing barbs at each other since an upstart Songz remixed Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” single before the singer decided to make a full-scale series of “Closet” songs. In Trey Songz’s version, he responded as the man in the closet hiding from what was taking place between Kelly and his wife. Kelly then released part two, and in his version, the man in the closet reveals himself to be gay. Since then, Songz has been vocal with his disdain for Kelly. Kelly struck back in an interview, saying the younger singer should “be very careful.” In the meantime, Trey Songz is flourishing as a part of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour. He’s the opener and also sings during Jay’s set. In December, he told MTV News that during the trip, he, Jay-Z and Young Jeezy are working on music together. “It’s definitely all in the talks,” he said. “It’s the Mob Squad. Me, Jay, Jeezy, we plan on working together while we on this tour, because the energy we have together when we get around each other is amazing.
