Mitt Romney Clinches Republican Presidential Nomination; Can He Beat President Obama?

Having effectively won through attrition weeks ago, Mitt Romney officially wrapped up the Republican nomination for president last night with a win in the Texas primary. Romney’s win put an end to the GOP primary as the former Massachusetts Governor began to ramp up his general election message against President Obama. Just after 9 p.m., he Tweeted: “#1144. Thank You. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to prosperity.” Despite surpassing the 1,144 delegate threshold, it was just a token evening for the presumptive nominee, whose rivals exited one by one over a month ago. Only Ron Paul is still fighting for delegates. With the White House out of reach, he seeks a prominent role at the party’s convention and in shaping its future. Romney didn’t make a speech last night, but the win was nonetheless symbolic, making him the first Mormon to be a major-party candidate for the presidency. The timing couldn’t have been better, as he is now being treated as an equal to Obama by the national media in what is sure to be a very close 2012 election. He’s pulled almost even with the president in voter surveys, currently trailing by just two percentage points in aggregated national polls, 45.6 to 43.6 percent. Romney probably has a 50-50 chance of being the 45th President of the United States. He’ll distance himself from Donald Trump if he’s smart. Just saying. If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?

Etan Patz Case: Pedro Hernandez Arrested For Murder

Pedro Hernandez confessed to murdering Etan Patz yesterday, meaning that after more than three decades, the famous missing persons case may be over. Hernandez, a former corner store worker, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder after he confessed to strangling 6-year-old Patz in 1979. “He was remorseful, and I think the detectives thought it was a feeling of relief on his part,” New York police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the media. Incredibly, today, May 25 marks the 33rd anniversary of the disappearance of Etan Patz, who became the nation’s first “milk carton child.” Etan Patz Case: Pedro Hernandez Arrested The case sparked the movement to raise awareness of missing kids. Etan vanished on his way to a New York bus stop, triggering a massive manhunt, but no sign of the little boy had ever been detected. The Etan Patz case returned to the headlines last month when authorities re-launched the search , tearing up the basement of a nearby building. Kelly said a recent tip led investigators to Hernandez , 51, a Maple Shade, N.J., resident with a teenage daughter. The commissioner said: “In the years following Etan’s disappearance, Hernandez had told his family that he had ‘done a bad thing’ and killed a child in New York.” On Wednesday night, Hernandez was questioned in New Jersey and then voluntarily returned with detectives to New York, says Kelly. “He brought them to the scene of the crime, which is now a store that sells eye glasses,” says the commissioner. “Hernandez described to the detectives how he lured young Etan from the school bus stop at West Broadway and Prince Street with the promise of a soda.” “He then led him into the basement of the (store), choked him there, and disposed of the body by putting it into a plastic bag, and placing it into the trash.” At the time, Hernandez was a 19-year-old stock clerk in the business and lived in an apartment nearby, says Kelly. Kelly said investigators arrested Hernandez based on “the fact that he had told his story in the past, and the specificity of what he said in the confession.” Hopefully, as horrible as this is, the family can finally have closure.

Mitt Romney "Day One" Ads Preview Presidential Goals

Mitt Romney’s “Day One” ads, outlining what he’d do in his first 24 hours on the job, sure make it sound like he’d be a good President of the United States. But are they realistic? Some things he promises in the TV spots, such as expediting the Keystone pipeline and ending Obamacare, he probably could do, or at least play a major role in. Others, such as lifting job-killing regulations and lowering the unemployment rate, are more nebulous. It’s easier to run for President than to be President. Watch the ads below and see what the Republican’s presidency would look like … or at least how he envisions it in an idealized campaign commercial. Mitt Romney Reaffirms Opposition to Gay Marriage

In the wake of President Obama’s support for gay marriage , his all-but-certain Republican foe in the 2012 presidential election reaffirmed that he is opposed to it. Mitt Romney said he is opposed to both civil unions and same-sex marriage, in fact. The former Massachusetts governor told Denver Fox affiliate KDVR-TV: “Well, when these issues were raised in my state of Massachusetts, I indicated my view, which is I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender, and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name.” “My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights, and the like are appropriate but that the others are not,” added Romney. Obama’s support came following Tuesday’s passage of North Carolina Amendment One, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships, and Vice President Joe Biden support for gay marriage. He made the end of his “evolution” on the topic official in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, which aired on Good Morning America today. “Over the course of several years, I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, and I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together,” he said. “When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” President Obama on Gay Marriage As the Republican nominee, Mitt Romney supports a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman, according to the National Organization for Marriage pledge he signed. He also pledged to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court, in contrast to the Obama administration, which does not defend DOMA as it thinks the 1996 law banning federal recognition of gay marriage is unconstitutional. After the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that gays had the right to marry in 2003, Romney initially said he would follow the ruling while seeking a constitutional amendment to overturn it. Ultimately, he used a variety of tactics to try to block the ruling, unsuccessfully. If the election were today …

Mitt Romney Raps to Eminem in Hilarious Mash-Up

Mitt Romney. Eminem. We never thought those two people would be used in the same THG headline, but one epic music video parody has united them at last. This amazing mash-up of Mitt Romney quotes and Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” takes dead aim at the presidential candidate’s flip-flopping reputation. President Barack Obama and Mitt’s all-but-dispatched GOP rival, Newt Gingrich, also make cameos in “The Real Mitt Romney,” which is a must-see … Will The Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up (Ft. Eminem) Oxford student Hugh Atkin created the video, combining the Republican candidate’s soundbites and the hit song from the rapper’s 2001 Marshall Mathers LP . Obama begins the video in much the same way as Em begins his track: “May I have your attention please. Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?” “Y’all act like you haven’t seen a Mormon before… I’m not concerned with the poor,” Mitt says in spliced-together clips from various campaign speeches. As for that catchy chorus, Romney raps, “I’m Mitt Romney and I’m the real Romney … All the other Mitt Romneys are just masturbating.” Obviously. Religion Matters: Florida Pastor Calls For Mitt Romney To Renounce His “Racist” Religion… “Mormonism Is Prejudiced Against Blacks, Jews And Indians”

A Florida pastor plans a news conference Monday to call on presidential candidate Mitt Romney to renounce his “racist” Mormon faith : The Rev. O’Neal Dozier, senior pastor of The Worldwide Christian Center Church on Pompano Beach, Fla., says Democrats and President Barack Obama would use Romney’s “racist religion as a secret weapon” to attack the Republican in the general election. “The Mormon religion is prejudiced against blacks, Jews and the Native American Indians,” Dozier says in a release previewing the news conference. “These allegations are substantiated and validated by the writings of the former prophets and seers of the Mormon church.” What Dozier’s release doesn’t mention is that he’s a supporter of rival Republican contender Rick Santorum, and, according to news reports, an honorary chairman of his Florida campaign. The Santorum campaign on Friday touted Dozier as one of its conservative leader endorsements. Santorum spoke in January at Dozier’s church, where the senior pastor noted that blacks will not vote for a Mormon because of the LDS faith’s racial history. Up until 1978, the Utah-based religion barred blacks from its all-male priesthood. Do you think Mitt should renounce his religion or just ignore the pastor? Source More On Bossip! Mitt Romney Slams Prop 8 Ruling as Prejudicial, Wrong

Prop 8 has been overruled in California , as the 9th Circuit Court stated today that the state’s ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. The decision has been met with mostly cheers Hollywood ( Woohoo!! Die Prop 8 Die!!!! Tweeted Olivia Wilde), but with one big jeer by one major player in D.C. Likely Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney has just released a statement that reads: “Today, unelected judges cast aside the will of the people of California who voted to protect traditional marriage. This decision does not end this fight, and I expect it to go to the Supreme Court. That prospect underscores the vital importance of this election and the movement to preserve our values. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and, as president, I will protect traditional marriage and appoint judges who interpret the Constitution as it is written and not according to their own politics and prejudices.” Romney easily defeated Newt Gingrich in the Nevada primary over the weekend and it will take the political comeback to end all political comebacks for anyone other than Mitt to take on Barack Obama this November.

Mitt Romney Sings "America the Beautiful," Awkwardness Ensues

Mitt Romney looking stiff, forced and a little awkward? There’s a stunner! We kid. While we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, as the GOP presidential hopeful reminds us, most of us are not endowed with singing abilities. In that respect: Mitt Romney … He’s just like us! Mitt Romney Sings America the Beautiful The Republican often delves into a monologue on the campaign trail about the greatness of America as seen through the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.” In Iowa, for instance, he said that the “amber waves of grain” were corn; in Florida, he tied the “spacious skies” to the state’s role in space exploration. Typically, Romney will talk-sing the lyrics, but he must have had a second cup of coffee this week, as he actually burst into song in The Villages, Fla. The crowd of mostly senior citizens sang along. The press covering Romney, who won Florida’s primary easily, wondered, “Was this really happening?” It was, and on the Tonight Show last night, Michelle Obama described Romney’s singing as “beautiful” and said the song should be sung by everyone. Classy lady. But can Mitt hold a candle to Barack singing Al Green ?! Obama Sings Al Green Who’s the better singer of these 2012 candidates?
