Dr. Dre’s Detox, Shyne’s Return And More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for new music from veteran rappers and a crop of breakthrough MCs, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Jay Electronica. By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre Photo: Interscope Drake-mania, Barbies, reunions, arrests and more dominated the hip-hop headlines in 2010. Lil Wayne went to jail and came out, and T.I. got out of jail only to go back in months later. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj proved the ladies can still get behind a mic, and Drake delivered on his potential with a stellar debut album. Now, looking ahead to the next 12 months, the year in hip-hop promises to be bigger and better than the last, from Dr. Dre’s return to a slew of hungry new rappers ready to vie for the Hottest MC crown. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part one of our preview of stories to follow in ’11. You know what it is. Detox Is (Really) Coming The doctor is finally in! Dr. Dre is set to release his long-in-the-works Detox album . He’s already in promotional mode, having graced the cover of the most recent XXL and dropped his new single, “Kush,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. After a few false starts, Dre is finally on pace to put out the project, which could also prove to be the launching pad for newcomer Kendrick Lamar’s career. Though he’s not signed with the super-producer, the upstart MC is poised to be the latest breakout from Dre’s albums, following perhaps in the footsteps of Snoop ( The Chronic ) and Xzibit ( 2001 ). Put your drink down and enjoy this one. Dipset, Dipset, Dipset This merry band of Harlem bandits put their differences aside last year and celebrated re-grouping with the rumbling “Salute,” their first collective effort in years. Since, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey have gotten back to their old Diplomats tricks. They’ve ruffled a few feathers (Cam and Jones took a few shots at former labelmate Kanye West on their version of “Runaway”), re-injected their sense of humor into the game (joining Kanye for “Christmas in Harlem”) and stoked rumors the New York collective will join Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records. Reunited, and it feels so good. Jay and ‘Ye What more can we say? Two of hip-hop’s reigning kings are joining forces for a full-length project that should provide material for playlists for the rest of the year. The pair dropped their first single, “H.A.M.,” first thing Tuesday (January 11), and the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust, like everyone else, will now analyze, debate and dissect the Lex Luger-powered number. The Now School Big names usually lead the release schedule each Tuesday, but this year, an influx of new stars is set to debut, including Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, Jay Electronica, CyHi the Prynce, Big K.R.I.T. and a solo Pusha T. The collective should ignite the game in the coming months as their profiles grow. With established acts like 50 Cent leaning toward Hollywood and veterans like Nas opting for alternative projects, the young guns have taken aim and are ready to fire. Take cover. Shyne On Hip-hop’s prodigal son, Shyne, is expected to release not one, but two albums this year: his next project on Def Jam (his last for the label was 2004’s self-titled LP) and another tentatively slated to bear the Cash Money Records logo. After serving nearly 10 years behind bars for his involvement in the infamous Club New York shooting, the Brooklyn rapper was deported to Belize, where he’s now based. Despite a rather tepid response to new material he put out last year, the outspoken MC remains as fascinating an artist as hip-hop has seen in recent years. He’s converted to Orthodox Judaism, but his rhymes still feature the potent realism of his previous work. Will his future be as bright as his once-promising past? Mixtape Daily ‘s two-part 2011 preview continues Thursday, and your favorite hip-hop column will be back on the daily grind Tuesday, January 18, where you’ll find the best coverage on all things rap, from mixtapes to DJs to MCs to culture. Jay Sean Looks Forward To Freezing Time In 2011

As he rang the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square, the singer reflected on his past and future. By Jay Sean, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean rings the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square Photo: Nasdaq MarketSite NEW YORK — To commemorate the first day of trading in the New Year, Jay Sean had the honor of ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square on Monday, and MTV News tagged along for the ride with his family, friends and industry colleagues. It has certainly been a rather meteoric two-year ride for the Brit in America, and in 2011, the Cash Money R&B singer will release his second stateside album, Freeze Time. At this introspective moment, Sean wrote about his feelings about his past year and the one to come, just for MTV News: “So, another year gone, and so much has happened. Sometimes it feels like it’s all one big blur, and thankfully, I have photos and calendar entries to see exactly what it was that I did!! 2010 was a year in which I witnessed growth. Growth as an artist, as a vocalist, and a songwriter but perhaps more importantly growth as a human being. 2009 ended with me having wedged my foot in the door, and 2010 gave me the opportunity to walk proudly in, quietly confident. By scoring two more hits in the U.S. with “Do You Remember” and “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” I managed slowly but surely to establish my place in the enormous American music scene, and that’s important to get those notches in the belt. One of the coolest memories for me was watching “The Karate Kid,” starring Jaden Smith, and hearing my song “Do You Remember” kick it all off. I can’t pretend I wasn’t overly pleased with myself (mainly because I knew that Will Smith had now heard my music, and anyone can tell you I’m the biggest Will Smith fan! lol). “2010 brought me back into the studio! Songwriting is actually my favorite part. To sit there away from all distractions in the world and create something that hopefully one day the world might hear and that my lovely fans will hopefully BUY LEGALLY FROM ITUNES AND VARIOUS OTHER DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL OUTLETS for, let’s face it, less than the price of two McDonald’s meals … (I digress, but you know what I mean!!) That is amazing for me. Nothing can match that process of creation. I see it as a privilege more than a gift, and I appreciate it. And I appreciate my co-writers and producers!! Big up all yourselves!! I got to work with the best of the best. Together we made an album that I am truly proud of. From its uplifting uptempos to sexy slow jams and melodic mid-tempos, I can honestly say this is my best work yet! If you loved the fun uptempos like “Down,” you’re gonna hear more like that! And if you liked slower sexy songs like “Ride It,” you’re gonna love this album! It’s a sick blend of pop, dance and r’n’b. It’s called Freeze Time, and it’s my fourth album. I can’t wait for you all to hear it when it comes out this year!!! Also last year, I got to work with some of the coolest artist in the world! From Nicki Minaj to Mary J. Blige, last year I shot six music videos, many of which will come out early in 2011, including my duets with Alesha Dixon from the U.K. and Jessica Mauboy in Australia. I also got to do my fourth song with Lil Wayne (FOURTH!!! WTF?!) which featured on his I Am Not A Human Being album! “Today, I leave to go to Qatar to do a concert and sing the Asia Cup theme song on which I’m featured. That’s gonna be a lot of fun! I also toured heavily with my band last year, and shared the stage and got to have jokes with some of the worlds biggest artists: Enrique Iglesias, Bruno Mars, Akon, B.o.B, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Flo Rida, Natasha Bedingfield and Katy Perry, to name just a few! In arenas around the world, to audiences of up to 20,000 in each arena!!! 20, 000!!! Eight years ago, I was onstage singing my heart out at bars to an audience of 23 wasted students, whilst dodging bottles of beer and making out like it was a dance move. Oh, and my DJ at the time was my brother. And the sound guy was, umm … my brother. And now, as I stand on the stage at the 02 in London or MSG in New York, I can honestly say, these are the most incredible live performances I’ve ever done. From Australia, to London, to Miami and Vegas, I traveled around the globe and managed to sing to all my wonderful fans everywhere. (Why does that make me sound like Santa Claus?) I am fortunate to have such loyal fans, and I love you all and thank you for your continued support over the years. You are all allowing me to live my dream, and I thank you for that. “My fans also helped me through the lowest point of my life so far. One of my favorite people on Earth left in November, my granddad. He passed away from a stroke, but fortunately I got to hold his hand in his last hours and tell him how much I love him. That taught me something, watching someone take their last few breaths. To take in ALL that we can, because we never know how long it’s all going to last. My granddad’s motto was ‘Don’t worry man, be happy,’ and I want to live like that from now on, to just not sweat the small stuff and be grateful for what we do have. And to just have fun and enjoy it all!!! Life is about the journey, not just the destination, so I take a lot more photos now so that I can remember all the moments. I’m gonna take on 2011 for everything it throws at me and OWN THAT BIYAAATCH!! I ended 2010 with a bang (and a disgusting hangover) by performing in Vegas for NYE and kicked off the New Year by ringing the closing bell on the first day of trading in 2011 at NASDAQ in Times Square, New York — my unfortunate mug on a GIGANTIC screen in the middle of Times Square, right opposite Diddy! Madness!! 2011 is going to be amazing, I can feel it.” Related Artists Jay Sean

Justin Timberlake Isn’t Behind Leaked Track ‘Take You Down,’ Rep Says

‘Justin has no involvement with either the song or the artist,’ JT’s rep says of tune by Danish recording artist. By James Dinh Justin Timberlake Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Contrary to reports, Justin Timberlake is not the singer behind a track called “Take You Down,” a rep confirmed to MTV News on Monday (January 3). The song, which was reportedly produced by the Neptunes, began circulating on the Internet on Thursday and was believed to be a previously unreleased JT tune. “Various media outlets recently reported that a song called ‘Take You Down’ is a new track from Justin Timberlake. These reports are untrue,’ the singer’s rep said in a statement to MTV News. “Justin has no involvement with either the song or the artist but wants to assure his fans that when he releases new music, they will be the first to know.” Despite the JT resemblance, the track is actually by Danish artist Rasmus Thude and titled “LLL (Love, Liquor, Lick It).” MTV News regrets the error. Fans will have to wait to hear new music from Timberlake , who has said in a number of recent interviews that he isn’t ready to record the follow-up to 2006’s FutureSex/ LoveSounds. “I want to conceptualize something a little bit more,” he recently told the Los Angeles Times. “And it’s probably because of the experience I’m having working with directors and screenwriters and getting to play cool characters. If that means I come up with, like, my version of ‘Ziggy Stardust,’ so be it. Who knows? What I’ve learned from acting in movies, I want to apply to music and see what happens.” Related Artists Justin Timberlake

Bill Erwin, ‘Seinfeld’ Actor, Dies At 96

The veteran character actor received an Emmy nomination for portraying a crotchety shut-in on a 1993 episode of the sitcom. By Eric Ditzian Bill Erwin as Sid Fields in “Seinfeld” Photo: Sony Pictures Television Bill Erwin, an actor best known for his Emmy-nominated turn as a crotchety old man on “Seinfeld,” died at his home in Studio City, California, on Wednesday at 96 of age-related causes, the Los Angeles Times reported . A well-respected character actor whose career spanned films, television and the stage, Erwin starred in a 1993 episode of “Seinfeld,” playing an elderly man named Sid Fields with whom Jerry Seinfeld volunteers to spend time. Erwin’s portrayal of the foul-mouthed, paranoid shut-in became one of the more memorable guest spots in the show’s history. Fields is convinced that the CIA is after him, his maid is stealing his money and Jerry has come to kill him. “I wasn’t born yesterday,” Fields says in the episode. “I might drop dead today, but I sure as hell wasn’t born yesterday.” Erwin began his career in Hollywood in the early 1950s, popping up in roles on television shows like “I Love Lucy,” “Perry Mason” and “Leave It to Beaver.” In 1958 he appeared opposite Jack Nicholson in the movie “The Cry Baby Killer,” playing Nicholson’s father. He went on to amass credits on the stage, winning a 1983 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for “Old Friends,” and in TV programs such as “The Twilight Zone,” “Gunsmoke,” “The Golden Girls,” “Growing Pains” and “Who’s the Boss?” In 1980, Erwin played a bellman, to great popular acclaim, in “Somewhere in Time,” a time-travel drama starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. But it was his irascible “Seinfeld” appearance that remains his best-remembered entertainment moment. He received an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category but lost out to David Clennon, who won for his turn on HBO’s “Dream On.”

Is T-Pain Signing To Young Money?

According to a jeweler who just crafted a Nappy Boy/ Young Money piece, T-Pain is heading to the hitmaking crew. By Mawuse Ziegbe T-Pain Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Will the king of Auto-Tune soon rock some Young Money-approved jewels? Judging by the footage of some bling that recently hit the Web, T-Pain may be the newest member of Wayne’s crew. In a video that surfaced online Thursday (December 30), jeweler Gabriel Jacobs , who has created rock-laden pieces for Birdman, 50 Cent and more, shows off a hefty ruby-and-black-diamond-studded piece in the shape of the New York Yankees-inspired Young Money logo that also features what appear to be tiny Nappy Boy insignias (the mark of Pain’s label) along the sides. Jacobs says in the clip that he crafted the king-size ice, which he says costs about $40,000 alone and almost $100,000 with the chain, because Pain is signing with Weezy’s camp. A rep for T-Pain did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. A T-Pain move to Young Money would continue the Auto-Tune crooner’s longstanding musical relationship with Weezy. Wayne and T-Pain have already charted together with collabos like Weezy’s Tha Carter III single “Got Money” and Pain’s Thr33 Ringz cut “Can’t Believe It,” which both dropped in 2008. The dreadlocked duo have also maintained that they plan to put out a joint album, an effort Pain told MTV News in March was temporarily thwarted by Weezy’s eight-month prison bid. “The T-Wayne album, we’re actually gonna wait until he gets out,” Pain said about Weezy’s jail time . “He has so much going on. He has Rebirth out right now. I don’t wanna interrupt that. We just gonna wait until he gets out to really get in on that. We recorded a bunch of songs. But, right now, it’s time for him and his personal sh–. We definitely got an album’s worth of material, but it’s only an album’s worth. It’s nothing to pick from. We just got an album. We can put out whatever we feel like and say, ‘Hey, this is T-Wayne’s album,’ or we can actually try to make it good. Like we’re actually trying to make an album and say, ‘This is the good T-Wayne album.’ Rather than just record 12 songs and say, ‘Here you go, mutha—-as! I know you want it. You gonna buy it anyway, just ’cause you think it’s good.’ ” For Wayne’s part, the MC has said that the collabo-friendly stars “both have the same energy” when he explained their similarities to MTV News in 2008 . “I don’t sleep. If you ask anybody, I don’t sleep. I think it’s the cousin of death. As much as you sleep, you’re impersonating death to me. He don’t sleep. I play all day. He plays all day and all night. The connection is crazy,” he said. “He loves to be creative, he loves to work; I love to create, I love to work. He really wants people to respect his rapping; I really want people to respect my harmonizing.” Do you think T-Pain should sign with Young Money? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists T-Pain

Kelsey Grammer Hollas: Need No Prenup, Yeah!

Kelsey Grammer is ignoring the advice Kanye West offered all men in “Gold Digger.” Despite the fact that the actor might be on the hook for $50 million to ex-wife Camille, a friend tells Pop Eater he won’t force new fiancee Kayte Walsh to sign a prenuptial agreement. “Kelsey is deeply in love with Kayte and can’t imagine spending the rest of his life with any other woman in the world,” the source says . “He knows she’s the one and wouldn’t insult her by asking her to sign a pre-nup.” Perhaps Grammer really is in love after all. This insider certainly backs up the star’s claim of that being the case. “Kelsey doesn’t care about the money. He never has. This is about being happy. Finding someone who is your best friend. He doesn’t want to wait any longer.”
