Baby Laments Lil Wayne Spending Birthday In Prison

‘If he would have went in like he was supposed to, he would be home already,’ he says of Weezy’s sentence being delayed. By Jayson Rodriguez Baby Photo: MTV News Cash Money CEO Bryan “Baby” Williams is used to celebrating Lil Wayne’s birthday alongside the multiplatinum MC. But this year, with Wayne in prison, Birdman can only count down the days until the rapper returns. During the lead-up to Wayne turning himself in to serve his sentence, there were several delays (from dental procedures to a fire ), and Baby lamented the fact that he and Weezy can’t celebrate together now as a result. “That f—ed with us,” he told MTV News about the delays in Lil Wayne turning himself in. “Mentally, we were ready to do it. And when they had the fire, it really f—ed up, ’cause we were like, ‘Get it crackin’.’ Really, if he would have went in like he was supposed to, he would be home already. We didn’t want to keep pushing that sh– back, but things were happening. We just had to live with it. But any time your loved ones are leaving you in any kind of way, it affects you, ’cause we human, you love what you love. … But he’s home in a minute. We ready. We went through the storm and weathered the storm, so we here.” While Wayne wasn’t able to celebrate his birthday with a party, he stayed active, phoning into MTV’s “The Seven” while his prot

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong To Appear In ‘American Idiot’

Rocker will make Broadway debut in play he co-authored. By Mawuse Ziegbe Billie Joe Armstrong at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: MTV News Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has a major Broadway production, “American Idiot,” on the legendary New York theater row but the rocker has never actually graced a Broadway stage — until now. Armstrong will appear in the rock opera this week, from Tuesday until Sunday, at the St. James Theatre. The Green Day lead singer, who co-authored “Idiot,” will play St. Jimmy; a role typically helmed by stage performer Tony Vincent, who will be on leave for a family matter. In the days before the production opened in April, Armstrong explained to MTV News that when creating the band’s hugely successful 2004 effort American Idiot, the trio sought to break the mold with their music but still retain some of the themes they’ve championed since their debut in the late ’80s. “Right around 2003, I think, as a band, we wanted to have a monumental moment. We wanted to make a concept album, we knew that,” Armstrong said. “Politically, when we were writing it, American Idiot was trying to make sense out of a big mess. We were trying to find something to believe in. It’s about people becoming lost and trying to find their way. And I think that’s been going through our songs since 1988.” Even though “Idiot” was initially released as an LP, Armstrong said they always envisioned the project as a theater production. “This album is our baby. To see it get put in the hands of other people, it’s great,” he said. “We’ve always thought that somehow there should be some sort of stage version, because that’s what was going on in our heads.” Are you excited for Billie Joe Armstrong’s Broadway debut! Introducing the SNL Scorecard: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Saturday Night

Saturday Night Live ‘s 36th season commenced last night with alumna Amy Poehler as host — Poehler’s first time in that role, making her only the fourth former female cast member to handle hosting duties. A lot of changes were made in the offseason: Abby Elliott and Bobby Moynihan joined the main cast; Will Forte moved on and Jenny Slate wasn’t invited back; Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah were all added as feature players. How did the new blood fare in their first episode? Not surprisingly, they weren’t seen much (though they did get a chance to briefly wave to the camera during the opening monologue… so that’s nice). Even more importantly, was SNL any good ? Movieline busted out its fresh new SNL Scorecard (along with the patented Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll) to make sense of it all.

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Right Through Me’ Is Huge, Birdman Says

Cash Money CEO thinks leaked single will take singer to ‘another level.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Baby Photo: MTV News So far, Nicki Minaj is batting .500 when it comes to her singles. The over-hyped “Massive Attack” faded faster than a narcoleptic, and her tame (by Barbiez standards) “Your Love” landed atop the Billboard Rap Songs chart. However, Cash Money co-founder Bryan “Birdman/Baby” Williams thinks “Right Through Me,” which leaked online Wednesday , will take the Lil Wayne prot

‘Wall Street’ Brings In Box-Office Bucks

‘Money Never Sleeps’ takes $7 million in theaters on Friday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” ($7 million) #2 “The Town” ($5 million) #3 “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” ($4.6 million) #4 “Easy A” ($3.6 million) #5 “You Again” ($2.8 million) Proving money still talks — at least, to moviegoers — “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” took the top spot at the Friday box office. Michael Douglas’ return as Gordon Gekko, 23 years after he powered the cautionary money, power and success tale of the original “Wall Street,” rang up $7 million in ticket sales. Another cash-grabbing flick, “The Town,” also scored big with audiences, landing in the second-place slot. The film, which follows vault looters (Ben Affleck), ladies (Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall) and the law (Jon Hamm) as they get caught up in the nefarious Boston bank-robbing underworld, made $5 million. The haul brings the movie’s total estimated tally to just over $38 million since its debut last Friday. The Friday top five wasn’t all about money grubbing and shady ethics. The animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” debuted in third place. Adapted from the children’s book series by author Kathryn Lasky, and boasting voice-over performances from Helen Mirren and Geoffrey Rush, the kid-friendly fantasy flick raked in an estimated $4.6 million. The high-school comedy “Easy A” continued to turn in good marks at the box office. Featuring a cast of young Hollywood names, including Emma Stone, Penn Badgley and Amanda Bynes, the flick pulled in $3.6 million during its second Friday on screens. Rounding out the top five with a tale of post-high school awkwardness is “You Again.” Audiences plunked down $2.8 million to catch Kristen Bell’s turn as a successful PR professional grappling with the fact that her brother’s fianc

Tony Yayo Almost Collaborated With Nicki Minaj

‘I was trying to do a record with her,’ G-Unit MC tells ‘RapFix Live’ of hearing Minaj early in her career. By Mawuse Ziegbe Tony Yayo Photo: Jonathan Goldner/MTV News Queens MC Tony Yayo may have an eye for spotting hometown talent. Before Nicki Minaj joined the ranks of Young Money and was still making a name for herself on the underground circuit, Yayo heard some of the fledging femcee’s bars and was impressed enough to jump on a track with her. The G-Unit soldier broke down their near-collaboration during his “RapFix Live” interview Thursday. “She was out there and she was messing with this guy named Fendi. I was trying to do a record with her, but Fendi was like, ‘For what? Why you wanna do something with her?’ Then I left it alone. This was a long, long time ago when I was seeing her on the ‘Come Up’ DVDs, ’cause that’s how she started,” Yayo explained. Even if he didn’t get on a record with Minaj, Yayo felt that someone needed to scoop up the promising lyricist to serve as the flagship diva of a hip-hop crew. “You know what’s crazy? Like, three years ago, I said to [music executive and G-Unit producer] Sha Money [XL] … ‘You need a hot female artist, rapper. I’m telling you, that lane is open,’ ” Yayo recalled. Even though Sha shot him a look of disbelief, Yayo pressed on. ” ‘I’m telling you, Sha, that female lane, that rapper lane is wide open.’ What she did was capture it at the right time, ’cause nobody’s out. There’s no Lil’ Kim out, there’s no Foxy … she just conquered that lane at the right time with the right people.” For Minaj’s part, the Young Money queen has seemed open to hooking up with G-Unit in the studio. When MTV News caught up with the “Your Love” spitter over the summer and posed the question of a possible collabo with fellow Queens-bred lyricist 50 Cent, she said the opportunity never came up. “Our paths never crossed, and it’s weird,” Minaj said on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown.” Although she didn’t mention chopping it up with Yayo, she has made the acquaintance of his one of his fellow Unit brethren. “I did meet [Lloyd] Banks, like, once or twice before.” What do you think a Nicki Minaj/ Tony Yayo song would sound like?
