Travis Barker Says Solo Album Helped Turn Tragedies ‘Into Strengths’

Give the Drummer Some, his long-in-the-works solo album, is finally due March 15. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker Photo: MTV News NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — It’s not exactly breaking news to say that Travis Barker has been working on his solo album for a while now ( at least two years , by our count), nor is it much of a stretch to say that, in the time he’s been working on it, a lot has happened in his life, both good and really, really bad. From the plane crash that took the life of longtime friends “Lil'” Chris Baker and Charles “Che” Still in 2008 to the death of collaborator Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein the following year, Barker has been forced to endure more than his fair share of hardships along the way, but through it all, he’s maintained focus on just one goal: finishing that album. And, at long last, he has. On March 15, his Give the Drummer Some album will finally see the light of day, and when MTV News paid Barker a visit in his NoHo studio, he was definitely in the mood to celebrate — in his own, understated way. “It’s a big accomplishment for me,” he told MTV News. “It’s something that’s been in the making for a couple years now, and there’s been lots of bumps in the road along the way.” And, in a lot of ways, the album — which features head-whirling contributions by everyone from Tom Morello, Raekwon and the RZA (on the track “Carry It” ) to the Transplants and Slash (on “Saturday Night”), not to mention Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Game and Swizz Beatz on the proper first single, “Can a Drummer Get Some?” — helped him overcome the loss of his close friends and saved his life too. “I had to transfer those [tragedies] into strengths and just push through,” Barker said. “Once I started coming in here, little by little, making my way into the studio, and I could actually make music again, and I was able to think, be in the studio environment, be productive, that was a big accomplishment, and, you know, from getting out of the hospital and learning how to walk and survive without being on 20 medications and stuff … I never envisioned it being OK again. So it was a big thing for me, and knocking this album out was the number-one priority on my list.” Which is why, when he talks about the album, he does so in relatively hushed tones. It’s been a long voyage getting to this point, but finally, Barker has made it. And he definitely considers himself blessed to have done so. “Everyone on the album is someone I was blessed to come in contact at one point or another in my life,” he said. “That’s a pretty good way to describe how I feel about it too.” What are you expecting from Travis Barker’s album? George Clooney ‘Completely Over’ Malaria

Clooney contracted malaria for the second time during a recent trip to Sudan. By Jocelyn Vena George Clooney Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images George Clooney is doing just fine after contracting malaria during an early January trip to Sudan. He opened up about having the disease during an interview on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” The full interview is set to air on Friday (January 21). “George is completely over the malaria he contracted while in Sudan during the first week in January,” Clooney’s rep told People.com . “This was his second bout with it.” The actor and activist used his bout with malaria to draw attention to needless suffering in Africa. “This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa can be reduced to a bad 10 days instead of a death sentence,” he said, according to E! News . “Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ‘s website explains. “People with malaria often experience fever, chills and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die.” While the disease is serious if left untreated, Clooney kept the mood light when discussing his own bout with the disease. “Well, you know, even with malaria, it’s just been fun,” he told Morgan about what it’s like to be George Clooney. “I guess the mosquito in Juba looked at me and thought I was the bar.” Earlier this month, Clooney teamed up with MTV , the Satellite Sentinel Project and other organizations to ask young people to help prevent an outbreak of civil war in Sudan by sending the message that “the world is watching.” “Frankly, our team of policy wonks and super nerds could use an injection of MTV style,” the actor joked in signature Clooney style about the project.

I’m Da Pappy! Halle’s Baby Daddy Files Court To Establish Paternity Of Nahla

Halle Berry’s ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry has filed legal documents asking a judge to officially declare him the daddy of 2-year-old Nahla. TMZ has learned Gabriel Aubry filed a paternity petition on December 30, 2010. Sources say Gabriel was afraid things were going to get rocky in establishing who gets to spend time with the 2-year-old, so he wanted to protect his rights. Turns out … we’re told whatever differences Halle and Gabriel have … they’ve been pretty much worked out. Sources say the former couple has not filed for child custody, visitation or support and they don’t plan to file — they have an arrangement they worked out between the two of them and don’t feel the need to go to court. Fellas take note. The best way to secure your rights as a father is to be proactive. Establish paternity and work out the details instead of waiting for someone to tell you what your rights are. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Source

Study Says Black Twitter Trending Topics Are Overwhelmingly Negative

A company that monitors trending topics on Twitter has reported that Black people spend hours creating mostly negative trending topics like #hoodhoe, #itaintrape and #whyihateb1tches. Here’s an interesting fact about Twitter: Black people love it. According to a study by Edison Research, we make up 25 percent of the 17 million (and counting) people who use the social networking site. And here’s something else about black people and Twitter: We love to start trends — trending topics, that is. Twitter defines trending topics as the “new or newsworthy topics that are occupying the most people’s attention on Twitter at any one time.” Adding a hashtag (#) to a tweet creates a themed, grouped message. If enough people tweet the same hashtag, it’s considered a trending topic. With African Americans disproportionately represented in the Twitter game, trending topics often originate with and are perpetuated by black folks. According to Edison Research, “many of the ‘trending topics’ on Twitter on a typical day are reflective of African-American culture, memes and topics.” Though many trending topics are about specific people, events or silliness like #liesmentell, #itsnotcheating, etc., the mood has recently shifted into far more ignorant territory. Why is this how we choose to wield our power on Twitter? Trendistic, which ranks Twitter trends, marked the most popular trend one day last week as #hoodhoes (and its similar tag, #hoodhoe). For 16 hours, users tweeted their definitions of a “hood hoe”: “If you only get paid when yo baby daddy get paid #hoodhoe” “I like #hoodhoe they get a discount on they rent and they always got food in the fridge foodstamps lol” “#hoodhoe emergency kit= leggings, track glue, cab phone number, ebt card, rush visa card, boost mobile phone and pre paid legal” Twitter users can be fickle, and what’s trending at one moment can easily fall off if enough people aren’t embracing it. The fact that #hoodhoes was a hot talking point for 16 hours lets us know that people are co-signing and spreading the message. All it takes to start up a trending topic is a large following. This was evident last year when comedian Lil Duval (@lilduval) started the trending topic #itaintrape. With almost half a million followers, the comedian was able to spread his misogynistic statements and allow others to get in on the action. “#itaintrape if you pay for it first … “#itaintrape if I fly u in” “#itaintrape if I bout you popcorn and a drink … then u Didnt eat it” The violent tweets inspired by Lil Duval were condemned by the masses, but there were more than enough people who helped spread his ignorance and create a “black Twitter” zeitgeist for the day. It’s interesting to note which topics don’t catch on and trend. The topic #uncletomreporter (also seemingly started by @lilduval) was trending on the same day as the one-year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti. Though some people used hashtags #haiti and #haitiday to acknowledge the natural disaster that killed almost a quarter of a million people, the Haiti topic peaked at number 76 out of the day’s most popular subjects. Stereotypes of black women can dominate a Twitter conversation for hours, but attempts to commemorate a disaster that killed hundreds of thousands of people and left a million homeless went practically unnoticed. Of course, not all black users embrace these trends, but the way many of us choose to leverage our loud voice on Twitter speaks volumes about us to outsiders looking in. The source of entertainment for some may be fodder for white tweeters. Writer Choire Sicha, who is white, even admitted on the Awl to being obsessed with what he termed “Black People Twitter” because of our “hilarious” trending topics. I wonder if Sicha, along with millions of other white people on Twitter, finds himself amazed that this is how we choose to use our power on the social networking site. Although 2011 has started off with some questionable trending topics, it isn’t all bad. On the same day #hoodhoe dominated timelines, once the sun started to set, #thegame took over. The TV series The Game, which BET picked up after the CW canceled it in 2009, was premiering, and “Black People Twitter” went bananas with anticipation. Not only was the show a hot topic, but several of the characters’ names were trending as fans tweeted about the did-you-see-what-just-happened moments. If you didn’t remember that The Game was on or about to come on, black Twitter surely reminded you. It’s not a stretch to say that the social networking push embraced by fans is part of what helped the newly resurrected sitcom debut with a record 7.7 million viewers. It has already been proved that we have a strong-enough presence on Twitter to dominate the conversation, but having that power doesn’t matter as much as how we use it. Some trending topics just make you laugh and get you through a rough workday, but they can also educate, bring awareness, and even show advertisers and networks that our shows are bankable, as is the case with The Game. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, top trending topics included #mlk, #mlkday and #ihaveadream. At least for one day, positivity instead of ignorance reigned on “Black People Twitter.” As trendsetters, we have GOT to do better. The whole world is watching. #Getpositive. Source

2011 Romantic Resolutions Revealed!

Good day, Bossip fam! Here’s to another “Almost There Thursday!” The New Year is approaching and, as we all have done in the past, it’s the time of year when people make promises to themselves to change certain parts of their lives and/or habits. Also known as, New Year’s Resolutions! Whether it’s vowing to hit the gym and shed those 15 pounds you’ve been wanting to get off for years or cutting all your credit cards in half, we’ve all made those promises to ourselves. Regardless of how long we stick to the plan, the intention is still there, right? But how many of us have made a romantic resolution? Everybody does at some point! The single folks make an effort to date more, the philanderers go on strike and try celibacy and the married couples might make a vow to be intimate more than once or twice a month. Well, 2011 is no exception! So, we took to the streets and found folks who were willing to share their romantic resolutions! Take a look! In 2011, I’m going to try and date more. I never go out and I’m always forfeiting parties and events. I don’t like dressing up and standing in heels all night long when I can watch “Weeds” and the “Big C” on demand. It’s crazy too because I love meeting new people and socializing but if I’m not in the mood after work and working out, which is often, I’m not going anywhere. Next year, I will have a better attitude about going out but it seems like more of the same and seeing the same people over and over again. I’m just not into it, but he won’t come knocking on my door now will he? – Megan, 31 I’m going to give my fiance a break. I’m always all over her but I love her so much and every time I see I just want to grab her and have my way with her. We have a little girl and she lights up my life in way that’s indescribable and my future wife is the only person I can thank for that. I can do better with handling things that need to be done around that house and feedings and things of that nature so I’m going to make a point to be better about taking initiative, she shouldn’t have to ask. I’m a great Dad and I’m going to be a great husband but, God willing in 2011, I will be a better man, husband and father. – Malik, 35 This coming year I’m going to make a point to try and make amends with my mother-in-law. We’ve never gotten along and I don’t really care for her. It’s really none of my business but I know the pain she put my husband through with her addiction and having him floating form foster homes and abandoning him and his brother. Like I said, it’s none of my business but I’m dealing with the ramifications of her lack of mothering. And since she “found Jesus” she’s holier than thou and I can’t have a glass of wine? Don’t like her. But, I guess, ratchets need love too. I’m going to do better. – Beverly, 33 Let’s see here, in 2011 I’m going to stop whoring around. I’m in my 30′s and all my homies are getting married and having babies. I’ve been living the life a bachelor and my track record with women hasn’t been the greatest. All this time, and this is a true moment of honesty for me, I’ve been bagging broads who don’t challenge my advances. It is definitely starting to get old and I do want so much more than that. I work in the industry and thirsty birds are always cluckin’. I won’t be feeding them either. I need to really focus on the future and work towards what I really want. – Trey, 3? Romantically, for me, things are pretty grim. It could be better but, you know what? I don’t know where to go! Where do girls like me go to meet good guys? I’m a good girl, I have a job, I’m not looking for any handouts, I just want a partner that’s willing to be a part of my life, as I am his. Where do you find a guy like that? At home like me, right? I don’t know but I wishing for less of the same more fulfillment, you know? -Isla, 28 Bossip fam, what are you romantic resolutions? Please share them below! Please remember to e-mail all topic suggestions, feedback and questions to loveandrelationships@bossip.com ! Editors Note : Greetings, all! The Capricorns have not been forgotten! Their zodiac profile will be posted tomorrow!

10 Favorite Stories of 2010: STV’s Picks

To paraphrase a frequently used expression around Movieline HQ, “God, can we just end this year?” (Usually minus the capitalization and punctuation, and often flavored with a few dashes of expletive spice depending on the mood of the day.) Finally — finally — the answer comes from above: “Yes.” But it wasn’t all bad — I even enjoyed some of it. To wit:

Alicia Keys Drops New Song ‘Speechless’

Ballad, which also features Eve, was inspired by Keys’ son, Egypt. By Jocelyn Vena Alicia Keys Photo: Michael Loccisano/ WireImage Motherhood has put Alicia Keys in the mood to write new songs. Hubby Swizz Beatz debuted Keys’ latest, “Speechless,” on his website as part of his Monster Mondays . The ballad samples Kanye West’s “Devil in a New Dress” and finds Keys doing what she does best: singing about love. “I’m at a brand-new time in my life and a brand new feeling, and it’s like this little guy, man, he takes my breath away,” Keys says before starting the first verse. The piano-heavy tune gets funky once the chorus kicks in. On the chorus, the R&B singer expresses her joy over the new love of her life, singing, “Makes you speechless, baby/ Don’t know what to say/ I’m just speechless, baby/ The poet in me has gone away.” Midway through the track, Eve makes an appearance. The tough rapper shows her soft side, spitting rhymes like, “In the morning when I rise up/ Go to the window and I smile, put my eyes up/ Stare in the clouds, like, ‘Wow, look at my luck.’ ” Keys finishes the track with the song’s chorus. She laughs, “You take my breath away,” as the song fades out. In a video posted on the site, Keys opens up about writing the song, saying, “I always start writing at the piano, because I just feel like it’s the best way to get the song out. It makes me take everything else away. and it just makes me, like, I get into it.” Beatz also appears in the video, noting that the song is just a fun little gift to Keys’ fans. “This should be a treat for the fans,” he said. “This will be a treat.” After she gave birth to Egypt, Keys noted that she felt inspired to pen a song for her son. “Every moment is beautiful; delicious even! Every moment I’m learning and living in a way I never have before. Being present in a way I never have before. Existing in moments I never have before,” Keys wrote in a blog. “Never have I felt so calm, so purposeful in taking the time to truly observe the world around me, to live in it fully and watch it, discuss it, put time toward it. It feels really incredible — so peaceful, so complete and long overdue.” What do you think of Keys’ new track? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Alicia Keys

Rihanna in a Bikini in Barbados of the DAy

I always love seeing pictures of Rihanna back home in Barbados because I know everyone in Barbados hates her. She’s living the life of luxury, making the people she went to church or school back when she was living in a shanty with her garbage man father, wait on her hand and foot, cuz that’s what she’s come to know…. She pretends they don’t know she was a teenage prostitute in the Karaoke bars on the island, sucking the right cock, or maybe she knows they all know and that’s why she walks around the beach like the prized pig at the county fair, to overcompensate for being full of shit, insecure, and a joke of a person…who deserved to get beat down by Chris Brown…but at least she’s getting paid for being barely talented…. I also love seeing her in pictures back home in Barbados because she’s wearing a bikini. ://www.drunkenstepfather.com/cms/ul/t-20101228-rihanna-122710-2.jpg”>
