British duo released their sophomore album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week. By Akshay Bhansali Will Kennard and Saul Milton of Chase & Status Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images If a jam-packed show at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival , production collaborations with Rihanna and a sold-out U.S. tour are any indication, America is thirsting for British EDM duo Chase & Status. Saul “Chase” Milton and Will “Status” Kennard released their second album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week via Casablanca Records. The album, released in Europe in January 2011, is certified platinum in the U.K., with more than 500,000 units sold. “We’ve been over the moon with the success of No More Idols, ” Kennard told MTV News recently. “It was beyond belief for us, really, and true, tunes have been floating around here for a while, but it’s getting a proper release.” Kennard described the “proper release” as a “big, full package” with plenty of remixes, including efforts by Feed Me, Nero and Dillon Francis. The deluxe edition will include a DVD and exclusive content from their 2011 No More Idols Tour. No More Idols runs a gamut of EDM , with a bit of grime, dubstep, drum n’ bass, rock and more. It houses hit U.K. singles in “End Credits” featuring vocalist/actor/friend Plan B, rock-ish hit “Hypest Hype” featuring Tempa T, and the cinematically exquisite “Blind Faith” featuring Liam Bailey, among others. The hit album has galvanized quite a following Stateside, and Kennard said he and Milton are grateful for the unexpected attention. “It’s an exciting time for electronic dance music, and we are just proud to be a part of it,” Kennard said. “We did the tour last year, and we thought it was going to be a wash out, really, because you’re a million miles away from home. The record didn’t get picked up by radio. So on and so forth. And then you go and do these clubs and these shows, and they are sold out full to the brim with people knowing all the words and everything. And it’s a great feeling, man.” Chase & Status plan to bring their live show — often accompanied by drummer Andy Gangadeen, James Brown and vocal collaborators Rage, Tempa T, and Liam Bailey — to Indio, California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Save for a few festival gigs, the duo now mean to hunker down in their lab and hope to complete their third album by year’s end. They are still in the early stages, tinkering around with sounds, but they say inspiration is all around them. “You can’t ignore what Skrillex has done,” Milton revealed. “We are good friends with Sonny. He’s a class act, but musically he’s just done something really incredible and just run with it. Nero as well . Odd Future, we are massive fans of what they do.” “I love Die Antwoord ,” Kennard added. “Love what they are doing. A$AP Rocky is really cool. Kill the Noise. … There is so much exciting, inspiring stuff.” What do you think of Chase & Status’ No More Idols ? Leave your comment below! Related Artists Chase & Status
After years of foisting dashed-off 3-D — and its inflated ticket prices — on movie audiences, studios may have found their most reliable ally yet in shoring up box office: IMAX. And not just the punch and potential of the brand’s own 3-D, either, but good old conventional 2-D as well. Call it the IMAX Old Wave. Led by last weekend’s $155 million Hunger Games windfall — $10.6 million of which came from the giant-screen format — more and more evidence suggests that audiences are both showing a preference for IMAX and happily forgoing often-reviled 3-D visuals. Just as important, and perhaps far more telling, blockbuster directors like Christopher Nolan and Brad Bird are making influential use of IMAX technology to augment their creativity. Those results have been roundly embraced by critics and crowds, all while 3-D continues generating negative feedback and diminishing returns. Are the studios finally ready to follow filmmakers around the corner? Maybe, if cinematographer Robert Elswit’s recent experience is any indication. “3-D was never a choice for us, so the matter never really came up,” said Elswit, the Academy Award winner who served as Bird’s director of photography on last year’s IMAX-intensive Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol . “As for the IMAX decision, Brad certainly decided to go that route, but he was basically unproven as an action director. Having somebody as influential as Tom Cruise supporting the idea meant it was more likely to happen. Once he was completely in agreement that IMAX would benefit the film as a result the studio never fought it – Tom really influenced them to agree on spending the money, and ultimately it was not such a major expense, budget-wise.” The move underscores both the creative and commercial advantages in turning away from the muddy visuals of the ongoing 3-D “renaissance” in favor of the optimal experience of regular, two-dimensional IMAX viewing. The company itself has recognized this, delivering increasingly fan-friendly franchise titles (many of course, like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon , still in its proprietary IMAX 3D) while aggressively expanding to nearly 600 screens in 48 countries. Currently the company is well into a project that will add 15 new venues into China. Meanwhile, as Hollywood rebounds from last year’s dismal box office, IMAX has actually outpaced that success. Even before Hunger Games landed the third biggest opening weekend of all time, Hollywood had seen a 20 percent increase in year-to-date grosses over the same time frame in 2011. During this same time IMAX has enjoyed a 45 percent surge over last year’s numbers. Even the bomb John Carter boasted a healthy 17 percent of its meager opening from IMAX theaters. IMAX has such a busy slate this year that despite clearing 270 screens for Hunger Games ‘ debut in North America (and an additional 19 venues in the U.K. and France), it has to edge out the blockbuster after a week to accommodate its commitment to today’s Wrath of the Titans. This is not a fluke. The Canadian juggernaut has cultivated a following among viewers and filmmakers alike for four decades, with the more of the latter gravitating towards the 65mm format in recent years. Nolan, a longtime proponent of the technology, was instrumental in ushering in the IMAX Old Wave with his 2008 megahit The Dark Knight , while Bird and Elswit followed suit in 2011 with Ghost Protocol . “Brad wanted to use IMAX right from the start, and that was mainly due to Chris Nolan’s success in using it for sequences in his Dark Knight film,” Elswit told me. “We decided that we wanted to use IMAX cameras to shoot four or five of the action sequences” — most famous being the thrilling Burj Khalifa scenes , featuring Tom Cruise actually scaling and bounding around the top of the world’s tallest building. “Initially the plan was to construct a massive set replicating the tower and then digitally inserting the ground shot behind what we filmed,” Elswit explained. “Tom, however insisted that he actually go outside the actual location, and that enabled us to take IMAX cameras to the tower and film him scaling the building. That meant we were able to deliver those shots that could cause vertigo when watching in an IMAX theater.” The global reach of IMAX also provided an unforeseen benefit to their location shoot. “As it turns out Dubai has an IMAX theater,” Elswit said. “So we were able to go there and actually view our dailies in IMAX.” Then, in another unique move, Paramount debuted Ghost Protocol exclusively on 300 IMAX screens five days prior to its wide opening. From the shoot to the release strategy, the format conferred an event status that helped nab the film $45 million in IMAX grosses alone and represented the first wave in a nearly $700 million global phenomenon. Asked to elaborate on the specific cost differences of producing 3-D versus standard IMAX, Elswit demurred. But the implication was clear for the filmmakers weighing both formats: On the whole, IMAX wields the bigger bang for one’s buck. “When it comes to altering a print for 3-D in post, that is not so expensive,” he said. “But if you were to properly shoot in either format, I don’t really see a major difference in the cost. In fact, when it comes to shooting an action sequence — because that is the kind of scene where you would be more likely to use IMAX effectively — you would need to use at least three cameras, in order to film it properly and get the images you want. In that case shooting in 3-D becomes more expensive because there is so much more time needed to properly stage your cameras to get the shots properly filmed.” Proponents of 3-D — even those inside IMAX’s front office — face other challenges and red flags regarding the format’s long-term viability. As a side-by-side comparison of established auteurs embracing technology, we can look back to Martin Scorsese’s reported $170 million family film Hugo : While lauded by critics and winning multiple Oscars — including Robert Richardson’s eye-popping 3-D cinematography — the film grossed only $73 million domestically and barely broke even once foreign markets are taken into account. Other telling statistics came with the hit film The Lorax , whose hefty $70 million opening far exceeded expectations. Industry investment analyst Richard Greenfield found that while 3-D screens represented a nearly two-to-one majority of The Lorax ‘s theater count, the grosses expose a nearly even split between 2-D and 3-D. The per-screen average shows that more money was made in conventional screenings, a stunning figure once you factor in the inflated 3-D ticket prices. That breakdown means that while 60 percent of the screenings were displayed in 3-D, 60 percent of the audience watched in 2-D. Greenfield also noted the underperformance of Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on IMAX 3D — a figure amounting to only 9 percent of its record-breaking $169 million opening gross — further arguing that if viewers had had more 2-D options, the 3-D share would have been even lower. Meanwhile, Hunger Games director Gary Ross — who has proclaimed his “love” for 3-D yet distanced the burgeoning franchise from the format (“I think that if we shoot this movie in 3-D, we become the Capitol,” he told one interviewer . “We start making spectacle out of something that I don’t think is really appropriate here”) — has already dictated that his sequel, Catching Fire , will likewise be projected in the traditional format. And those movies’ promise notwithstanding, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond isn’t taking his company’s growth — in any dimension — for granted. “For us, one weekend and one film does not make a year,” he cautioned this week . “And that’s one thing you’ve really got to be clear [about] with investors and analysts.” Nevertheless, if artists’ preferences continue to mirror their audiences’ tastes, the combination may yield an inescapable influence on Hollywood’s decision makers. And once sizable, steady profits can be found on the 2-D side of the ledger, studios and IMAX won’t have any choice but to listen as the money does the talking. “If you show a woman’s mammary glands, if it’s done poorly, it instantly takes away from the comedic element of the scene. It’s too jarring. But [my husband] Chris [Pratt] and I were pitching around a character, a Hollywood-mess character on the red carpet at the opening of a movie. She’s talking to these journalists and she’s wasted. One boob is completely out, and she’s talking on and on, like, [Faris slurs] ‘I’m so excited to be here.’ If you held it long enough and kept it going, just the one boob, it would be so funny.” [ BlackBook ]

Actress reportedly several months along with her first child with husband Jim Toth. By Jocelyn Vena Reese Witherspoon in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: KVS/Bruja/PacificCoastNews.com Reese Witherspoon is reportedly pregnant with her third child. The Oscar winner and her agent husband, Jim Toth, are expecting their first child together, according to reports. Sources tell Us Weekly that “Reese is right around 12 weeks.” Another source added that the couple have been “trying to get pregnant.” Reese already has a son, 8-year-old Deacon, and daughter, 12-year-old Ava, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. While Witherspoon’s rep has yet to comment, a new shot of the star sporting what appears to be a baby bump by her hotel pool in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, earlier this month is adding credence to the reports. Sources said the twosome don’t plan to announce the news, however, “the timing is right. She’s so happy!” While appearing on “Daybreak” in the U.K. in February, the actress made reference to her love of babies, saying, “I hug all my girlfriends’ babies. They’re all so stinking cute.” She added that she was having a hard time with her kids getting older. “There’s a little sadness as they’re growing up and walking away from you, but it kind of changes the whole dynamic,” she said. “We have really funny dinner conversations now, and they know more about certain topics than I ever, ever knew.” When she spoke to MTV News around the same time, she opened up about the possibility of her kids going into show biz. “I don’t encourage [watching my movies]. If a movie comes on, we’ll watch it and they kind of find it entertaining. They’re kind of fascinated by a movie I did when I was 14. They really want to see ‘Man in the Moon,’ ” she said. “It just doesn’t enter the picture. I don’t know. I encourage their artistic abilities. But they haven’t said it’s anything they want to do.” Toth and Witherspoon married in March 2011 at the actress’ California ranch. The wedding was attended by celebrity pals like Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn. Share your well-wishes for Reese in the comments below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Reese Witherspoon
As you likely know, the Golden Raspberry Awards are quickly approaching with all the promise of recognizing the worst of the last year in cinema. As you also likely know, the reaction to the Razzies among film critics and commentators has yielded many of the same complaints we hear every year: The nominations tend to omit movies that take themselves more seriously and/or aspire to something a little more sophisticated than Adam Sandler jump-roping with his shrill twin sister. The editors at Movieline concur with this perspective and hope to change it with the help of both esteemed peers and loyal readers. Thus the inaugural Soily Awards, our attempt to reconcile the year’s highest-profile Hollywood misfires with their truly uninspired brethren. To be awarded on March 23, the Soilies will showcase the new spectrum of awful that confronts today’s filmgoers, with the ultimate goal of redefining Bad Movies for the 21st century. Or at least not letting high-achieving 2011 crapmakers like Clint Eastwood or Natalie Portman off the hook. Winners in the six categories below — whose nominees were chosen by Movieline’s distinguished Brown-Ribbon panel of experts — will receive one of the lovely Soilies statuettes seen above. We have a brand-new Facebook page for the occasion, where a Reader’s Choice component will be introduced as well later this week. Stay tuned! The inaugural nominees are: The Soily for Worst Picture of 2011 The most appalling, misconceived and/or unpleasant-to-watch film of 2011. The more ambitious/pretentious, the better. Abduction Conan the Barbarian Green Lantern The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) Transformers: Dark of the Moon The Soily for Achievement in Bad Directing The director of the most appalling, misconceived and/or unpleasant-to-watch film of 2011 — or maybe just most appalling director? (NOTE: The award will be named after its inaugural winner.) Michael Bay, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Dennis Dugan, Jack and Jill Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar David Gordon Green, Your Highness and The Sitter Zack Snyder, Sucker Punch The Soily for Achievement in Bad Acting A unisex award recognizing the worst and/or least inspired performance by any actor in any film in 2011. Russell Brand, Arthur Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Taylor Lautner, Abduction and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I Alex Pettyfer, I Am Number Four and Beastly Adam Sandler, Just Go With It and Jack and Jill The Brown Paycheck Achievement in Bad Acting A unisex award recognizing the most lopsided ratio of salary to quality. Bradley Cooper, The Hangover Part II Harrison Ford, Cowboys and Aliens Nicole Kidman, Just Go With It Helen Mirren, Arthur Natalie Portman, Your Highness , No Strings Attached and Thor The Shart Prize A film that seemed like it might be bad but turned out much, much more aromatically awful than anyone could have imagined. Arthur Atlas Shrugged: Part I Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star Your Highness Zookeeper The Shit-the-Bed Award Arguably the most prestigious Soily, this honor goes to the movie that, despite its pedigree and everything it had going for it on paper, nevertheless resulted in a massive failure to move the cultural needle or achieve anything remotely resembling entertainment. Carnage Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close The Iron Lady J. Edgar War Horse I would like to thank the Soilies’ extraordinary Brown-Ribbon Panel for their contributions both here and to come as we vote on the year’s worst:
