Potential Oscar Nominee James Franco Gets ‘D’ in Acting Class

James Franco will be in the thick of the Oscar race this year thanks to his performance in 127 Hours , but that doesn’t mean everyone thinks he’s a good actor. At the premiere of Howl last night, Franco revealed he got a ‘D’ in a recent acting class at NYU, though he isn’t sure how that happened. “I did the work, I did well in everything else,” he told Roger Friedman . Maybe his teacher saw Flyboys . [ Showbiz411 ]

Activist and Anchor Contessa Brewer Warns of ‘Consequences’ for Opposing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal

MSNBC anchor and gay rights activist Contessa Brewer on Tuesday warned of “consequences” for senators who oppose repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the military. In the 12pm hour, she speculated, ” …My big question here, will there be consequences, especially for moderates who refuse to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell? ” [MP3 audio here .] Later in the News Live show, Brewer interviewed Daniel Choi, an ex-Army lieutenant who was discharged under the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. Brewer repeated her prediction, citing the planned vote of Senator Susan Collins: “Will there be consequences for her this afternoon if she votes to block the procedure moving forward?” Despite reporting on gay rights issues, the journalist has also lobbied for political change. On July 24, 2010, she appeared at a fundraiser in Kentucky. A press release touted, “As the evening’s featured guest, MSNBC’s Brewer, who has several family ties to Kentucky, will speak on the need for a statewide anti-discrimination Fairness law in the Commonwealth from a national news perspective.” On July 12 , the supposedly neutral anchor implored, “My big question today: Why aren’t more American leaders itching for a fight on gay rights?” Choi has repeatedly been the go-to guest for Brewer to tout the wrongness of Don’t Ask, Don’t tell. In addition to Tuesday, he appeared as a guest on September 10 and July 12. A transcript of the September 21 segment can be found below: 12:03 CONTESSA BREWER: The Senate is set to vote on whether to move forward on the Don’t Ask, Don’t tell repeal 2:30 p.m. eastern. We’ll watch for it. We’ll bring it to you when it happens. Given all the issues our country is facing today, of course my big question here, will there be consequences, especially for moderates who refuse to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell? I’d like to hear your thoughts on Twitter, on Facebook. 12:35pm CONTESSA BREWER: Dan Choi was discharged from the army for being openly gay. And, so here you had Lady Gaga drawing attention to Maine and the role of these moderate Republican Senators, Senator Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. We just saw, Lieutenant Choi, Susan Collins on the floor of the House. She says she supports a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but she doesn’t like the way Congress and the Democrats are going about seeing the repeal passed. Will there be consequences for her this afternoon if she votes to block the procedure moving forward? DANIEL CHOI (Former U.S. Army Lt.): Yes. There will be consequences, Contessa, for all of us because whenever you continue a policy of discrimination, there are dire consequences for the fabric of what makes America what it is. And, although it’s difficult for me to follow Lady Gaga, I want to say she’s been a great leader in this. I some of our politicians can speak up you loudly and forthrightly as she has. BREWER: I want to read what McCain has to say about this. He says, and he’s kind of been the one pushing for a filibuster of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He says it’s “pushing for a vote on the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law before the Defense Department has concluded its survey of the opinions of our force on an important matter that will directly affect them and their families.” I’m getting a lot of E-mails in, Dan, from people who have served or are serving in the military. Both sides here, some saying, no, gays should not be allowed to openly serve and some saying it’s absolutely time to overhaul this policy. Do the survey results at all change- would it change your view about whether it’s a valid policy? CHOI: It’s absolutely an invalid- it’s absolutely a destructive policy. You don’t need a survey to understand that discrimination is anti-American. I don’t know if any of the people conducting the survey took a look at the other countries in the world. They conducted polls and many people said the same thing that Senator McCain and many other elected officials are saying, that there’s going to be some kind of negative impact. Contessa, whenever you have a unit or a team that prizes honesty, and integrity, that supports all families, not just straight families, but all families, you have an increase in cohesion. You have an increase in community. You have an increase in the strength of an organization. Repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is going to do nothing but strengthen our communities and our families and our country. BREWER: Let me ask you, and some of the e-mails I get that do not support the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell from former or current military members, this is the argument they make: I want you to address this since you served in the military. They say, what happens when a gay military member hits on a straight military member and then the gay military member gets punched in the face? Does that happen? Do gay- do gay soldiers hit on straight soldiers? CHOI: Well- Well, I think what — let me just be really clear about this. When a gay soldier exists in a unit, 99 percent of the time, they’re not spending their time hitting on other soldiers. There’s probably a fear that when a gay soldier exists that the other soldiers will say, “Oh, maybe I’m gay, too,” And that’s what’s at the bottom of this kind of thinking, this kind of illogic. And those incidents that people are bringing up never happened when I was openly gay in an infantry unit for over a year and a half. It it’s common for a lot of people to focus on, you know, these pretend incidents that they will say will be widespread and they’ll create a sense of fear. But I’m not buying it. I’m not tricked by it. And I don’t think anybody who pays attention to your program should be tricked by it either.

CNN’s American Morning, Fixated on O’Donnell Charges, Played Down Biden’s Fine

At CNN, it’s all Christine O’Donnell all the time.  News readers there seemingly can’t get their fill of Delaware’s Republican senatorial candidate. Today, the American Morning program covered in each of its three hours allegations from a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint that O’Donnell misused some campaign funds.  Yet when Vice President Joe Biden was fined $219,000 in July for actual FEC infractions, not allegations, American Morning didn’t devote anywhere near as much air time to the story. At 6:00 AM (ET), co-anchor John Roberts kicked off American morning with: “Checks and balances. Questions for the suddenly silent rising star of the Tea Party.  Where does Christine O’Donnell get her money? Is she using campaign cash as her personal credit card?”  Co-anchor Kiran Chetry chimed in with, “We’re going to have a lot more on Christine O’Donnell in just a few minutes.”  And they did, playing a clip of CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman telling O’Donnell she didn’t answer his question as well as part of an interview with a woman representing the organization lodging the complaint.  Roberts noted that group claims O’Donnell is “clearly a criminal and should be prosecuted because of this spending.” After thanking viewers for watching and mentioning the transition from summer to fall, the 7:00 AM segment began: CHETRY: I’m Kiran Chetry. We have a lot to talk about this morning. We’re looking for answers from the tea party candidate for Senate in Delaware. Christine O’Donnell’s past spending raising some legal and ethical questions. We’re going to show you what the complaints are about, who’s behind them, and how she responded last night at a Delaware campaign forum. By the 8:00 AM segment, the team showed some self-restraint, waiting until about midway before: CHETRY: And Delaware GOP nominee Christine O’Donnell is denying she misused money from her last Senate run. She did though shy away from statistics when our Gary Tuchman caught up with her at a campaign forum last night. They then went to a video, afterwards noting that the “O’Donnell campaign has not responded to our phone calls this morning.” On July 19, the American Morning program reported on another story about the FEC looking into allegations of improprities.  It’s entire coverage: CHETRY: Well, his presidential bid failed. Now, Joe Biden will have to pay a $219,000 fine for violating campaign spending rules. The Federal Election Commission says Biden’s 2008 campaign accepted contributions above the legal limit. A Biden spokesman says that the ruling is, quote, “commonplace” and that a repayment check to the Treasury Department will be in the mail. And that, in total, was American Morning’s coverage that day of Biden’s $219,000 fine. The O’Donnell overkill must be obvious to even the Flavor Aid drinkers of the mainstream media.  Still, they just can’t get enough.  Even if it ultimately backfires as I think it may.

Paris Hilton Stolen in Court Picture of the Day

My friend Jenny who was the original brain behind a popular celebrity website before she got muscled out of it posted this picture of Paris Hilton in the Vegas courthouse today….cuz she got arrested a few weeks ago… She wrote: I was at the courthouse this morning and so was Paris Hilton. Best shot I could get of her. It’s blurry, but her ginormous feet are sort of in focus. The picture made me laugh, not as much as Paris Hilton getting off for hiding coke in her pussy instead of cock in her pussy cuz her pussy is a well trained circus act that can do all kinds of tricks… so I figured I’d share it with you idiots… Amateur style Investigative is like amateur porn….way better than the real thing…

NBC News Prez Whines That Fox News Is ‘Trying to Brand Us’ As Liberals Because of the Radical MSNBC Lineup

Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz wrote this howler today in a story on how MSNBC’s leftishness rubs off on the mothership: “No one is suggesting Brian Williams’s newscast had suddenly become biased.” That’s right. Brian’s show has been biased for a long time . But there’s more comedy in how NBC News chief Steve Capus tries to suggest it’s unfair to see NBC as liberal because of the ever-increasing left-wing shrillness quotient of MSNBC in prime time:  Capus concedes that MSNBC’s lefty lineup at night–Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and, as of next week, Lawrence O’Donnell–raises questions about NBC. But cable is “narrowcasting,” he says, and “I think the audience gets it, pure and simple.” Fox News, he adds, is “trying to brand us” as a liberal broadcast network because of MSNBC. “It’s a classic political tactic — they don’t like Keith Olbermann, they’re going to come after us. It’s annoying.” NBC News has operated with a left-wing tilt going back to at least Huntley/Brinkley in the sixties, but now they have a new way of pretending to be straight news: Don’t we look calm and sedate next to Olbermann?  Kurtz was also told that MSNBC was a complete programming mess for 11 years, but adding radical-left talk show host after radical-left talk show host has suddenly made the network “serious,” after all these years:  Fox still dominates the cable news race, but MSNBC now regularly beats CNN in prime time, and Joe Scarborough’s “Morning Joe” has become the most talked-about breakfast show . Capus attributes the turnaround to the channel branding itself “the place for politics,” giving it a long-sought focus after so many short-lived programs with the likes of Alan Keyes, Phil Donahue and John Hockenberry. For its first 11 years, “MSNBC didn’t have its act together,” Zucker says. “Only in the last three years has MSNBC emerged as a serious network. Kurtz is buying the company spin on this one. Fox & Friends crushes Morning Joe in the morning (often by a gap of about 1 million to 400,000). Kurtz doesn’t even note that CNN Headline News has boasted that its Morning Express with Robin Meade has beat Scarborough in the coveted 25-54 demographic for many months . Perhaps Kurtz is being charitable to NBC so he doesn’t look too much like a CNN employee. Kurtz is certainly correct that Fox News enjoys taunting NBC and MSNBC (if he doesn’t mention that NBC and MSNBC often shoot back):  Fox Executive Vice President Brian Lewis responds that “NBC, and especially MSNBC, is not even a blip on our radar screen. We don’t care what they do. Capus must be confusing us with CNN” as a close competitor. (Fox host Bill O’Reilly, for his part, regularly describes NBC as a left-wing network, at one point slamming “Capus and his character assassins.”)
