Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video: Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet, Part II

Thanks to eagle-eyed MTV.com readers, we present our second in-depth look at Gaga’s brand-new clip. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images We asked, and you delivered. On Monday, with the premiere of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video , we compiled a pop-culture cheat sheet to highlight some of the clip’s nods to film, fine art, fashion and more. It was a pretty big task, so when we published that first story, we included a caveat: We were sure there were some references we missed, and we hoped you’d help point them out to us. And, of course, you did. We received tons of tips from eagle-eyed Gaga fans, who analyzed each frame of “Born This Way” and came back with a list of references we can’t believe we missed (actually, some of them were so fleeting that we can’t believe you noticed them). And thanks to that response — and in the interest of being thorough — we’re publishing a second cheat sheet, made up entirely of contributions from MTV.com readers. We’d like to think this is about as complete a list as you can get, but, if there’s still something that slipped through the cracks, let us know in the comments below. So, without further ado, alphabetized and cross-referenced for your perusing pleasure, here is our “Born This Way” pop-culture cheat sheet, part II: Lotus Flowers : Not to be confused with the Radiohead single, these flowers hold immense significance in Eastern religion and philosophy, representing sexual purity, feminine grace and spiritual promise. Hindus closely associate the lotus with the divinities Lakshmi and Vishnu, and Buddhists believed that the flowers bloomed with each step of Gautama Buddha, who founded the religion. In “Born This Way,” lotus flowers descend to Earth (spiraling, as one reader pointed out, “in line with the Golden Ratio”) immediately following the birth of the starchild. Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment” : Massive fresco inside the Sistine Chapel, it depicts the second coming of Christ and the apocalypse. Several readers noticed the similarities between the painting and the “Born This Way” scene where the “evil” child is born, as the souls of humans trapped below rise toward their Mother Monster for judgment. Ovary : Female reproductive organ that — as one ultra-attentive Gaga fan pointed out — makes an appearance as a constellation at the 33-second mark of “Born This Way,” just before Mother Monster begins to give birth. “Rabbit Teeth” : We caught hell from the Little Monsters for suggesting that, when Gaga donned a pair of gapped-front teeth at the conclusion of “Born This Way,” she was doing so as an homage to Madonna. Instead, her fans said the costume was a nod to LG’s own past, when she was called “rabbit teeth” by her classmates. Now, of course, it’s safe to say she’s having the last laugh. Sin

‘Everything that she’s about is in that song,’ one fan says of the single. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Vaughn Schoonmaker Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Fans have been donning their best Lady Gaga costumes for the first three stops on the latest leg of her Monster Ball Tour , and MTV News has been there all the way. Gaga’s dedicated Little Monsters have been turning out in droves to see their Mother Monster belt out her hits, including her latest smash, the anthemic disco number “Born This Way.” Fans told MTV News that the song’s feel-good message has resonated with them. “I think it’s fantastic that she decided to put that song out first before any other more noteworthy songs she might have,” Juliana explained. “Because it meant something to her.” Lisa further explained that “it means no matter what you are, who you are, who you want to be, you just can’t help it, because you were born this way.” Meghan thinks “Born This Way” is a great track to pump yourself up with when you’re feeling low. “It means that no one should really be able to tell you who you can can’t be, because obviously you can’t change how you are,” she said. “And you should just express that.” Kristen added: “Nobody should discriminate you for anything. Just be who you are, be proud and that’s it.” Mon Cheri boiled down what the song means to her: “Do what you want to do! I mean, keep it real, keep it safe and keep it legal, but you got to do you, hon.” Not only does the song have a great message, but as Alicia pointed out, it also is awesome to dance to. “It’s just perfect. … Everything that she’s about is in that song,” she said. “And it has an amazing, catchy beat, as usual.” Marie said the tune sums up what Lady Gaga is all about: “It’s everything she says in interviews all wrapped up into a song.” What do you think of “Born This Way”? The fans were not only treated to her Monster Ball, but also got the chance to see Gaga’s new single “Born This Way” live and be part of Gaga history as she taped the concert for an upcoming HBO special . So, what stood out most? “When she gave her little speech about never letting someone tell you can’t get a Grammy [or] you can’t get an HBO special,” Gaga fan Leanna told MTV News outside the show, moments after Gaga wrapped up. “I cried because it was just so meaningful … it’s like no one can tell me no.” Fellow fan Carey noted that Gaga is always thinking of her fans when she puts on her two-hour-plus spectacle. “I always feel like it’s catered to her customers and her fans,” he excitedly shared. “Go little monsters!” Casey noted that being in the room as Gaga performed “Born This Way” was awe-inspiring. “I mean, it’s her hometown and she just reenacted the Grammy performance,” she said. “It’s f—in’ beautiful.” It seemed that particular song really resonated with the fans who came out to see Gaga. “My favorite was the last song, ‘Born This Way.’ To me, it’s a great anthem for kids today, or anyone for that matter,” Gaga fan Tony said. Evie and her pal Cecelia also loved the finale. “I loved ‘Born This Way’ at the end,” Evie said. “It was perfect. Lady Gaga Rocks Fans With Monster Ball Performance

‘I swear it was the best show I’ve ever gone to!’ fan exclaims of Atlantic City showcase. By Shawn Adler Lady Gaga performs in Atlantic City on Saturday Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage Mother Monster might have been the one on stage Saturday night (February 19) belting out numbers at the top of her lungs, but it was the Little Monsters in the audience who reached impossibly loud volumes for their hero, Lady Gaga. And they did it outside the arena. “I swear it was the best show I’ve ever gone to!” a fan screamed to MTV News outside of Boardwalk Hall arena in Atlantic City, where Gaga had just finished her Monster Ball performance. “I was waiting for it!” “I loved it!” fan Sandy Kutsu gushed at alarming decibels. “It was my second time!” Generally sticking to her Monster Ball format, Gaga nevertheless had some new tricks and treats in store for her appreciative audience, including a performance of “Born This Way” (“She did ‘Born This Way’!” a fan exclaimed!) during a second encore, just one day after the single was named the fastest-selling single in the history of iTunes . “There was a little bit of new choreography, some new costuming. But other than that it was the Monster Ball we know and love,” fan Stephanie Botton explained. “I was in tears at ‘Born this Way.’ It was absolutely great.” The biggest surprise, however, might have been Gaga’s announcement during the show that she’d be back on tour next year with the “Born This Way Ball.” “How can one person do all that? I have no idea!” gushed fan Kaitlin Donahue. For fans, the tour surely can’t come quickly enough. “She’s changed my life,” Botton said. “It was awesome!” Related Photos Lady Gaga Lights Up Atlantic City Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Is Fastest-Selling Single In iTunes History

Song has sold more than 1 million downloads in five days. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lady Gaga is starting to make this look too easy. Every time Mother Monster releases a new single or video, she smashes some kind of previous record. Apple’s iTunes announced on Friday (February 18) that Gaga’s “Born This Way” is now officially the fastest-selling single in the history of the iTunes store. And while Apple has historically declined to give out any sales figures for iTunes, it broke with protocol in a statement announcing the record, saying that “Born This Way” has hit #1 in all 23 countries with iTunes stories and sold more than 1 million tracks in just five days. The feat tops a stellar week for Gaga, which included the single shooting straight to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while becoming the 1,000th song to lead the list in its 52 year history. “It is a tremendous honor,” Gaga told the magazine about reaching the chart milestone. “To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard … I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career. … I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to ‘Born This Way.’ [It] has been so life-changing for me as an artist, and between Billboard and the international number ones and the radio numbers. … I couldn’t be more blessed to have the fans that I have.” The first single from Gaga’s upcoming album of the same name, due out on May 23, has also opened in a major way at radio, rushing onto the Billboard Radio Songs airplay chart at #6 with a first week audience of more than 78 million, giving Gaga the highest opening for a song since the chart began incorporating all radio formats in 1998. Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For ‘Edge Of Glory’ Twitter Trend

The pop star gives props to her ‘sneakymonsters’ for discussing what is believed to be the title of one of her Born This Way songs. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images With Lady Gaga fans eagerly awaiting the release of Born This Way ‘s first single, which is expected to be the album’s title track, details about the rest of the recording are slowly emerging. Late Tuesday, Lady Gaga tweeted to thank her fans for making “Edge of Glory” a Twitter-trending topic. “Edge of Glory” is expected to be one of the track titles on the album. “Ok. Firstly, yes I love Nutella (with Banana+Wonderbread) who doesn’t?” Mother Monster wrote. “Secondly, I can’t believe Edge of Glory was trending, sneakymonsters! Thirdly, I need a beer with my name on it cause the last 72hrs gave me a creative hangover.” Gaga apparently has been making references to the song as far back as September, when she tweeted , “I’m on the edge of glory, and I’m counting on a moment of truth. I’m on the edge of glory, and I’m counting on a moment with you.” Meanwhile, her best friends, New York band Semi Precious Weapons, also have been hinting at what fans might expect from Born This Way , which is set for release in May. “Just as she described it. It’s amazing, epic,” Weapons frontman Justin Tranter explained in a recent Q&A . “The most incredible album I’ve ever heard.” In addition, Gaga producer RedOne recently put in his two cents about the singer’s new material, saying that her forthcoming single was “so beautiful. Last week, a track off the album that Gaga remixed accompanied a short film by fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco that was shown at a Mugler fashion show in Paris. Discussing the tune, Vivanco said Mugler creative director and Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti had found “a really articulate way” to describe it — ” ‘It’s techno meets Whitney Houston, in a really good way.’ ” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ Coming To ‘Glee,’ Amber Riley Says

‘Glee’ actress tells MTV News to also expect ‘Somebody to Love.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Amber Riley Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty We already knew Justin Bieber’s music will turn up on an upcoming episode of “Glee,” but we weren’t sure which smash the McKinley High crew would be remaking — until now. “Glee” star Amber Riley confirmed to MTV News on Sunday (January 16) that not just one, but two Bieber jams will be made over by the cast of the hit song-and-dance show, including the Ludacris-assisted chart-topper “Baby,” which was dubbed the most viewed music video on YouTube in 2010 . “There’s gonna be two Bieber songs, and I think ‘Baby’ is one. I think that’s correct,” Riley disclosed on the Golden Globes red carpet. According to Riley, the Gleeks are also set to rock another Bieber-helmed dance-floor filler: “Somebody to Love.” “I think … those are the two songs,” she revealed. “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy also recently dished that part of Bieber’s pop&B repertoire would make it into the show. In a very apt use of the pop star’s teen-hysteria-inducing hits, Murphy said the Biebs’ music would be the backdrop for a scene in which one of the fellas tries to win over one of the “Glee” ladies. “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a J.B. song to win Quinn’s [Dianna Agron] approval,” Murphy said recently. In addition to Bieber, Lady Gaga is slated to get the “Glee” treatment once again, this time for a track that hasn’t even dropped. Murphy said Mother Monster’s forthcoming “Born This Way” single will serve as the inspiration for an episode about school bully Karofsky (played by Max Adler), who the show has hinted is gay. “I love that that song is [an] anthem,” Murphy said. “This show is by nature optimistic, and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. “So I don’t really know what that’s going to be,” he continued. “But I do know we’re going to do a whole episode that’s about that song.” Are you looking forward to hearing the “Glee” cast perform Justin Bieber’s music? The singer’s The Fame Monster has topped the 2010 United World Chart , a list compiled by German website Media Traffic that tallies worldwide album sales collected from a variety of international sources. The Mother Monster landed at the top of the chart after her little monsters around the globe bought a total of 5.8 million copies of her massive album. And Gaga is extremely grateful for the achievement. “THE FAME MONSTER was named the best-selling album of 2010!” she wrote on Twitter . “I’m so excited for the future, believe + work hard, you will achieve your dreams.” But, Gaga wasn’t the only artist garnering big global albums sales this year. Lady Gaga To Make Born This Way Announcement New Year’s Eve

‘My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE,’ she writes in a Christmas tweet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year’s Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way. She tweeted over the weekend: “Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM.” The Mother Monster didn’t reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. “This is so darling!” she wrote . “You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!” Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year’s Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said of her plans six months ago. “I’ve been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs , what she plans to announce on New Year’s Eve is a mystery, but we’re sure her fans are counting down the moments. Gaga recently shared that the album will be her “most innovative.” A single is expected in February , and the album will follow shortly thereafter. “[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats,” Gaga said. “I think that lyrically this album is more poetic … It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster.” What do you think Gaga will unveil on New Year’s Eve? Share your guesses in the comments!
