‘I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,’ she tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga accepts the Best New Artist award at the 2009 Video Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images The 2009 Video Music Awards belonged to Lady Gaga . She stunned us on the red carpet, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier gown with Kermit the Frog on her arm, and shocked us onstage with her blood-soaked performance of “Paparazzi.” In 2010 , Gaga returned to the VMAs and made everyone’s jaws drop again when she hit the stage in her infamous meat dress . Yet, out of all of her iconic VMA moments, there is one that really stood out for Mother Monster: her win for Best New Artist. “I will always remember Best New Artist,” Gaga told MTV News. “I just remember that I won and I was surprised and I was really taken aback.” Eminem presented Gaga with the award that night, and she is still a bit embarrassed about asking him to hold her newly acquired award as she peeled off her face-covering red-lace crown to thank her Little Monsters face-to-face. “I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,” Gaga recalled. “And than he sort of looked at me like, ‘Are you f—ing kidding me?’ But he’s really cool, so it was fine.” We can’t say that we blame her for what she did, since she said there were a million different things running through her mind when they announced that she was the big winner. “It was a super surreal moment, where you have to think very quickly,” Gaga said of accepting her Moonman. “You can’t hear yourself, because they are screaming so loud, and you don’t have an in-ear [monitor] and you’ve got a microphone and you’ve got to get everything out, and I just remember I said, ‘To God and the gays,’ and I remember when I was done, I thought that was the right thing to say.” But we weren’t just transfixed by what Gaga was saying; we also couldn’t take our eyes off of what she was wearing. Gaga hit the stage in an Alexander McQueen dress, complete with a crown and her face covered with red lace. What the viewers didn’t know is that Gaga never planned to show her face during her acceptance speech. “I think I had been told and asked profusely by my label to take it off if I won,” Gaga said of removing the mask. “I was like, ‘I’m not breaking the fourth wall of this performance.’ I gave them this whole sassy answer. Then I got up there, I just got so overwhelmed, and I ripped it off, and I’ll never forget that moment. The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. ‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. ‘Grenade’ singer tells MTV News the King of Pop’s 1995 performance left an indelible impression on him. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is looking forward to a special night at this year’s Video Music Awards , which will include a performance and competing for Moonmen in four categories, including Video of the Year for “Grenade,” but before the show kicks off on Sunday, the crooner told us he already has an all-time favorite VMA moment. “Favorite VMA memory?” he said on the set of his VMA promo , which debuted on-air this week. “I think one of the tightest performances I’ve ever seen is Michael Jackson’s VMAs. He did ‘Dangerous’ into like ‘Smooth Criminal.’ ” The 1995 VMA performance featured Jackson performing a medley of some of his most beloved tunes, including “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Scream,” “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Black or White,” “Billie Jean,” “Dangerous,” “Smooth Criminal” and “You Are Not Alone,” all with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash by his side. “He just showed why he was the King of Pop,” Bruno continued. “He’s just not human. When you were watching it, he was doing dance moves you have never seen before. He made a moment.” That performance stuck with the singer, who took Jackson’s performing philosophy to heart. “I think that’s the most important thing when you’re doing stuff like the VMAs: You get this one moment to really show everything you’ve got.” In addition to his nod for Video of the Year, Mars is also up for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video, also for “Grenade.” And he’ll compete for Best Choreography for his less-angsty “The Lazy Song.” Share your favorite VMA moments in the comments! ‘I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do,’ she says about her plans for Sunday’s Video Music Awards. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News In only two years, Lady Gaga has become the face of the MTV Video Music Awards , and on Sunday, she will continue to cement her place as a VMA icon . Mother Monster will be opening this year’s big show , and viewers are sure to be both wowed and inspired. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” If it’s anything like Gaga’s 2009 VMA performance of “Paparazzi,” her fans will not be disappointed. “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said of her performance. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” Gaga joins a long list of memorable VMA opening acts , including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera joining Madonna onstage for a kiss. So, what was Gaga’s reaction to joining this legendary list? “I was just really excited and I was really happy because they asked me after I told them what I wanted to do,” Gaga said. “So it was even more exciting because I knew that it was based off the performance idea and MTV believing in me as an artist and they have, and I appreciate that, from the beginning. They always allowed me to do my version of pop music and not someone else’s.” While we won’t see what Gaga has in store until Sunday night, she said she hopes the audience is “moved.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Following all-girl remix featuring Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, R&B singer proffers his own mix of the song. By Jocelyn Vena R. Kelly Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Did R. Kelly place his vote for his pick for Song of the Summer by jumping on a new remix of Britney Spears’ monster smash “Till the World Ends”? Following the all-girl remix featuring Nicki Minaj and the song’s writer, Ke$ha , this new version of the Femme Fatale single gets some love in the club from Kells. On the new mix, after Brit sings the first verse and the chorus, Kelly comes in singing, “Slide up in this club/ This beat’s got me in love/ Till I just don’t care/ It’s like I’m walking on air/ It’s a party right here.” He then goes on about partying till the world ends, his Auto-tuned vocals dancing over the track until the song’s breakdown, where he mixes his vocals with Spears’. Toward the song’s end, Kelly does some vocal runs over the song’s chorus as it plays out, keeping with the integrity of the Dr. Luke-produced track. That’s not the only Song of the Summer contender that’s getting reworked by a male pop star. Over the weekend, much to the delight of Mother Monster herself, Nick Jonas put his own signature acoustic singer/songwriter stamp on her summer contender “The Edge of Glory.” Lady Gaga tweeted , “Swoon! Nick Jonas singing ‘The Edge of Glory.’ On my way to press conference in Taichung, listening to it. So dreamy! X.” Using only his acoustic guitar, Jonas played his version of the triumphant pop track to a audience of fans who seemed charmed by his rendition of the Born This Way single. “@ladygaga the pleasure is all mine,” he later tweeted . “That is a beautiful song. Keep inspiring the world.” Which reworked track do you like better? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale Related Artists Britney Spears R. Kelly
