Cate Edwards: Engaged to Trevor Upham!

In the final days before Elizabeth Edwards’ death , daughter Cate gave her mother the happiest of news: She was engaged to longtime sweetheart Trevor Upham. The couple, who met as students at Princeton, got engaged over Thanksgiving after spending the holiday at the Edwards family’s Chapel Hill, N.C., home. “Elizabeth was thrilled,” a close friend told People . Cate Edwards with her late mother Elizabeth. Elizabeth Edwards’ funeral is today . Cate Edwards, 28, is expected to deliver a eulogy and Trevor Upham, a physician, will serve as one of the pallbearers. Upham has said that Cate, an anti-discrimination lawyer in D.C., and her mother (also a lawyer) were alike in many ways: “They have the same quirks.” “They like the same things. I think they even hold their phones the same way.” Congratulations to Cate on this wonderful news, which surely made her mother thrilled and proud even in the circumstances of these past couple of weeks.

Happy Birthday, Hank Baskett IV!

Hank Baskett IV turns a year old today, and the little guy really needs your best wishes. This is a toddler whose dad continues to be cut by professional football teams and whose mother is so desperate for attention that she’ll mislead the public about a miscarriage . Pretty tragic stuff. Hank, of course, is just the innocent, adorable bystander in all of this. He’s not even aware of how his mother is exploiting him on tabloid covers such as the ones shown here. He probably thinks the cameramen are his relatives. Poor guy. Happy birthday, buddy.

Octomom Told to Pay Up or GTFO By New Year’s

The man who holds the note to Octomom’s house is once again saying how he’s fed up with her games, and now wants her to pay $450,000 by January 1. Plus interest, natch. Amer Haddadin says he’s been more than understanding when Nadya Suleman fell behind in making her monthly payments, but, well, enough is enough. Octomom can run, but she … wait, she can run? A $450,000 balloon payment has been looming over the mother of 14 for months … it becomes due every time she falls behind on California mortgage payments. Amer, who planned to publicly shame her the last time this happened, only to have her scrape together the cash last minute, says she’s fallen behind once again. Guy served Octomom’s lawyer with a letter demanding Nads pay the full $450,000 balance plus interest by December 31 or get out of her La Habra home. She scraped up the cash last time somehow … can she do it again?!?

African Cats Trailer: Are Baby Lions as Cute as Penguins?

I suppose the trailer for Disney’s nature documentary African Cats kind of begs for a lot of smart-ass jokes about cornering the same “people-like-documentaries-about-cute-stuff” market as March of the Penguins and Babies . So much so that making said jokes seems kind of obvious and futile. Uh…plus that shot of the mother cheetah carrying her cub in her mouth is really adorable.

The Event Convolution Alert: It’s Doubtful ‘Everything Will Change’

Sometimes, it’s nice for TV to carry a certain level of predictability — because at least that means it’s rooted in some discernible trajectory or consistent characterization or something . Not The Event though! Sure, there are times when, say, you could predict Thomas choking when he pulls a gun on his mother, but that’s less a character-based level of predictability, and more a we-can’t-kill-Laura Innes’-character level of predictability. The former leaves you nicely pleased with your own cleverness; the latter leaves you in a bloodied heap on your couch.

‘Ugly Betty’ Actor Michael Brea Charged With Murder

31-year-old accused of killing his mother with a sword in their Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment. By Eric Ditzian Michael Brea Photo: Michael Brea’s Facebook page Former “Ugly Betty” actor Michael Brea has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his 55-year-old mother, according to multiple reports. The 31-year-old Brea stands accused of holding his mother hostage and then slaying her with a 3-foot-long sword. Citing police sources, the New York Daily News reports that Brea was convinced his mother was possessed by Satan and that he yelled such statements as “Sinner! Sinner!” and “You never accepted Jesus” as neighbors listened in horror early Tuesday morning. Neighbors in his Prospect Heights apartment eventually called the police. “I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he’s just saying a bunch of [Bible] passages like ‘Repent, Repent, Repent,’ ” neighbor Gregory Clare told New York’s WPIX . “I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream, and so I have my father call the cops, call 911.” Officers responding to the call reportedly encountered an extremely bloody scene and the butchered body of Brea’s mother. Brea himself was said to be clutching a bible and a sword (initial reports claimed it was a samurai sword, but the Daily News now says it was a Masonic ceremonial sword). The actor was aggressive and had to be Tasered before being placed on a stretcher and brought to Kings County Hospital for psychological evaluation. WPIX reports that neighbors described Brea and his mother as “quiet people,” and that Brea showed no previous indication of mental illness. The actor has had roles on “Ugly Betty” and, most recently, in this summer’s “Step Up 3D.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar

In this photo taken Nov. 1, 2010, Bihar state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar displays the indelible mark on his finger after casting his vote at a polling booth in Bakhtiyarpur, India. Over past five years, Kumar built roads, fought crime and helped rescue Bihar state from a near-anarchy that had condemned most of its 83 million people to a life of fear and poverty. A six-stage vote in the region long dominated by caste-based politics ends Saturday. Out in the flat, dusty plains of eastern India,
