New Spider-Man Andrew Garfield Gets Thumbs-Up From Emma Stone

‘He looks like Spider-Man,’ says the actress, who plays the superhero’s love interest, Gwen Stacy, in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ By Jocelyn Vena Bryce Dallas Howard and Emma Stone Photo: MTV News It’s not often that two actresses who have appeared alongside one another in one movie have also played the same role in separate films at different times in their respective careers, but that’s just the case with “The Help” co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Emma Stone. If you’re a bit confused now, let us quickly untangle this web of a description for you. Howard appeared as the character Gwen Stacy in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3,” while Stone has taken on the same part for the upcoming superhero reboot “The Amazing Spider-Man.” On Thursday night, when Stone and Howard sat down for the latest installment of MTV’s Sneak Peek Week, they opened up about both playing Spider-Man’s love interest. When MTV News caught up with the ladies before the Q&A session, we just had to ask Stone what it was like to see the new Spidey, Andrew Garfield, all decked out in his webbed spandex best. “He looks like Spider-Man, ya know?” she shared. “It’s pretty exciting.” Howard also gave her thumbs-up to the latest Spider-Man. “I saw Andrew in a leaked photo,” she said. “And he looked really good.” The former Gwen Stacy isn’t only excited about Garfield picking up where Tobey Maguire left off, but she’s given her blessing, quite enthusiastically, to Stone too. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” Howard explained, adding that she visited Stone in her trailer on the set of “The Help” the minute she heard the casting news. “I was stoked.” Stone elaborated a bit more about her time on set as Stacy, sharing that she had a joyous time making “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which was directed by Marc Webb. “It was great; it was really wonderful,” she dished about shooting the film. “It’s something we both, for some reason, get to be a part of, which is wonderful.” Stick with MTV News all week as we gear up for the 2011 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday with a Sneak Peek Week screening and live-stream Q&A session every night this week. ‘Twilight’ Vs. ‘Harry Potter’: Who Will Win First 2011 MTV Movie Award?

Plus: Jason Sudeikis goes inside nominated movies, Steven Spielberg presents a ‘Super 8′ exclusive and more Act 1 inside scoop! By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit In the last couple days leading up to the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , we’ve been all about bringing fans as close to the awards-show action as possible. The intrepid MTV News team working from the show’s site in Universal City, California, has been privy to countless exclusive sneak peeks, like advance screenings of “Horrible Bosses,” “The Help” and more during our Sneak Peek Week; the promise of an awesome “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” exclusive during the big show; and the very first look at “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” If that isn’t enough to get you to tune in Sunday, MTV News’ Jim Cantiello tracked down the show’s supervising producer, Jane Mun, to get inside info about what viewers can expect to see during the first act of the show. “In Act 1, we have Jason Sudeikis, our host , going in and out of our movies, but I can’t tell you what [exactly] that is, because that’s a surprise that we have to keep,” Mun teased. “You’ll notice right here a name [Taylor Lautner] on this board,” she added, gesturing to a large poster board covered in different-colored pieces of paper, each with names of people and events that will occur during the telecast. “I can’t spill the deets,” Mun said when pressed about what the “Twilight” superstar will be doing onstage. Cantiello suggested that whatever Lautner does, it should be shirtless — which Mun didn’t confirm or deny. “Then we have Jason come out and greet the room and our viewers to a really awesome monologue, ” Mun continued, adding that she’s alerted her censor team that they might have some extra work during Sudeikis’ opener. “I’ve already talked to the censors, and they are in for a treat,” she said with a smile. The first award of the night will be Best Male Performance, which pits supernatural studs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner (“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) against each other and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” star Daniel Radcliffe, Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) and Zac Efron (“Charlie St. Cloud”). Who will come out on top? “Then, we just announced [Thursday] morning, is going to be the exclusive sneak peek of ‘Super 8,’ ” with director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg and stars Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney presenting. “And that is our Act 1!” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? MTV Movie Awards Stage Is A ‘Nod To Fantasy’ In Film

Producer Mark Burnett reveals look of Sunday’s show inspired in part by ‘Lord of the Rings.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway and Josh Horowitz 2011 MTV Movie Awards stage Photo: MTV News A big part of the MTV Movie Awards is the stage, and every year the creative folks responsible for coming up with the look of the show manage to think up some eye-popping way to keep viewers entertained. Although the stage design has often been sleek and modern, for the 2011 Movie Awards, the team went in a different direction, filling the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, with fantastical props like caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels. Executive Producer Mark Burnett spoke to MTV News about the inspiration for the design, and he described it as “a little bit of a ‘Lord of the Rings,’ our nod to that part of the movie industry. … And our production designer Roy, [this is] his nod to fantasy in the movies.” With “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” leading the nominee pack, Burnett said the feel of this show also reflects those fantastical worlds that are ruled by wizards, werewolves and vampires. “I think there’s been a lot of movies in the last few years that are very fantasy-driven,” he said, adding that Tim Burton had been a major inspiration for the stage design. And come Sunday, that stage will be filled with A-listers like Generation Award honoree Reese Witherspoon , Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and, of course, host Jason Sudeikis. If fantasy isn’t your thing, Burnett offered an alternative way to interpret the swirling, eye-catching look of the show. He joked, “It could be 4 a.m., you’ve had too much to drink [and] it’s the end of the party.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Will Kristen Stewart Sit By Rob Or Taylor At MTV Movie Awards?

How about both? Jim Cantiello takes us behind the seating process before Sunday’s big show. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jim Cantiello and the seating cards for Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson at the Gibson Amphitheatre Photo: MTV News The 2011 MTV Movie Awards are only days away, and that means all the finishing touches are being made inside the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. MTV News’ Jim Cantiello was on hand as the seating cards were placed inside the theater, and he learned which of Hollywood’s biggest stars would be rubbing elbows during Sunday’s big show. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year, you guys: Seat cards are down at the Movie Awards!” Jim said from inside the Gibson. “This is where all the A-listers are going to be sitting, and look! MTV Movie Awards isn’t making a decision between Team Edward and Team Jacob,” Jim noted, pointing out that Kristen Stewart will be placed smack-dab in the middle of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, much like her character in “Twilight.” When we caught up with Movie Awards seating manager Stephan Lenart , he explained how he goes about choosing who sits where. “It’s like a puzzle,” he said, adding that he reads up on a ton of entertainment blogs to determine which celebs are in the spotlight before deciding where to seat them. Jim has a special explanation for how one celeb ended up with her seat: “We have Nicki Minaj here with three empty seats. MTV gave her plenty of room for all of her personalities,” he joked about the presenter. Other seating assignments include R&B superstar Trey Songz sitting next to … “Super 8” director J.J. Abrams? “Here we have frequent collaborators Trey Songz and J.J. Abrams, creator of ‘Lost.’ ” Other big attendees and nominees include Emma Stone, Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon , Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey, Josh Duhamel and many more. Emma Stone And Bryce Dallas Howard Bond Over ‘Spider-Man’ Role

New Gwen Stacy says ‘it was pretty great to be together’ on ‘The Help’ set when she learned the casting news. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Stone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — In a weird twist of fate, Emma Stone found out she’d be playing Gwen Stacy in the latest installment of “Spider-Man” while on the set of “The Help” co-starring the previous franchise’s Gwen, Bryce Dallas Howard. “I found out while I was on set of ‘The Help,’ ” she said about the Andrew Garfield-starring “Amazing Spider-Man” during “The Help” Q&A session for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week. “It was pretty great to be together for that.” Howard said she was almost as excited about the casting as Stone was. “Representing as redheads!” she proclaimed onstage in front of an excited crowd at the Pacific Design Center. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” she said, adding that she stormed into Stone’s trailer the minute she heard the news. “I was stoked.” With so much buzz about the new “Spider-Man” film, it seems that Stone will be just as surprised as fans to see the flick. “I’ve seen nothing, I promise. I’ve seen small action sequences for the 3-D, and it looked terrible,” she joked. “I really haven’t seen [anything].” So what did Stone do to research the role of Gwen — besides leaning on Howard for her first-hand account, of course. “I read a pretty comprehensive ‘Death of the Stacys’ book … and it’s a really amazing book to learn the story of Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy,” she said. “And I’ve read a various amount of comics.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? ‘The Help’ Stars Talk Tearjerkers At MTV’s Sneak Peek Week

Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard open up about book-turned-movie during Q&A session. By Jocelyn Vena Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard spoke to a packed room at the Pacific Design Center on Thursday night (June 2) for the latest installment in MTV’s Sneak Peek Week, opening up about retro tearjerker “The Help,” which screened to an excited crowd shortly before the chat. Since the book-turned-film is certain emotional, we asked its leading ladies if they ever reach for the tissues in the movie theater. “Oh, I cry!” Emma Stone admitted. “It’s shocking I’m not crying right now. I cried at ‘Air Bud.’ I cried at ‘Spice World.’ ” But what about when she watches her own movies? “That’s crying out of terror and self-loathing,” she joked. All joking aside, Stone is really proud of “The Help” and “felt it reflected the book.” “When you read the book, you have a vision of those characters too,” she said. “I definitely understand being protective of the material.” “The Help” is the film adaptation of the best-selling novel set in the South during the civil-rights movement. It stars Stone, Howard and Viola Davis and focuses on the bonds formed in the face of adversity. Stone is the flick’s protagonist, Skeeter, who works to make a change through writing a book about the hardships felt by minorities in the South during this pivotal time in history. “She’s a bit of a modern woman,” Stone said of her character. “When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a writer. She’s curious about people and she’s questioning her life.” Howard, meanwhile, plays the bigoted Hilly, and the actress said she latched onto something very specific about the character to make her relatable. “The thing I eventually grabbed onto was her ignorance,” Howard explained. “Once I understood, I then could attempt to play that character.” Stone used her costumes to help her get into character. “The accent is always a major concern, and then, of course, knowing how to be Southern, there’s a lot of challenges,” Stone said. “This is the first time I felt more in character after putting on the wardrobe. It was wonderful to have that.” Stick with MTV News all week as we gear up for Sunday’s Movie Awards with a Sneak Peek Week screening and live-stream Q&A session every night this week. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello 2011 MTV Movie Awards gift bag Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News One of the benefits of being behind the scenes in the midst of the madness leading up to the MTV Movie Awards is our fly-on-the-wall vantage point, and we’ve been getting all kinds of insider glimpses into the prep work that goes into the show, including red carpets rolling out, sets being built and lights getting adjusted. On Thursday (June 2), in addition to chatting with host Jason Sudeikis and the finalists of “America’s Best Dance Crew” ahead of Sunday’s big finale, we sent our intrepid reporter Jim Cantiello into the swanky world of swag, where he got a sneak peek at the goodies that make up this year’s official MTV Movie Awards gift bag. One of Jim’s favorite things, i.e. items that were sparkly and/or eye-catching enough for him to pick up, included Murad’s bronzer, which he suggested would be a great get for Robert Pattinson and any of the other “Twilight” castmembers who play pale-skinned vampires. Speaking of “Twilight,” Pro Beauty Tools is gifting celebrities with a bunch of their professional hair-styling tools, the standout being the styling brush used on the set of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.” There are too many goodies to name, but a few of the other highlights include a $50 Starbucks card, Ralph Lauren Fragrances’ Big Pony Collection scents for men and the Romance and Summer Romance for women, a Kobo e-reader loaded with 100 books, a Casio TRYX camera and a two-night stay and specially designed bag from Andaz 5th Avenue. How does this year’s goodie bag compare to past years? Last year’s gifts included season-one DVDs of MTV’s hit “Jersey Shore” and fashion PR maven Kelly Cutrone’s book “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? ‘Mortal Instruments’ Author Cassandra Clare Reacts To Jamie Campbell Bower Casting

Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: Tony Barson/ Getty Images “Mortal Instruments” actress Lily Collins has finally met her magical match in “Camelot” star Jamie Campbell Bower . Deadline Hollywood broke the news that Bower has been cast as demon-slaying Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the big-screen adaptation of the first “Mortal Instruments” novel, “City of Bones.” Fans immediately took to Twitter to voice their reactions, with many concerned that the 22-year-old “Breaking Dawn” actor just didn’t look the way they imagined the character — described as a well-built, angelic-faced warrior. Yet, for Cassandra Clare, who’s penned four novels in the supernatural “Mortal Instruments” series, Bower couldn’t have been a better fit for the part. “His acting of the role is perfectly spot on,” she told MTV News of the audition footage producers sent her. In fact, Clare was so moved by the performance that she broke into tears. “I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen,” she said. Clare understands this sort of rabid (and often contentious) fan fervor, which has become par for the course for any YA novel getting the big-screen treatment. “I think this is sort of inevitable,” she said. “This is what happened with ‘The Hunger Games’ casting. This is what happened with ‘Twilight’ casting. I’m old enough to remember this is what happened with the ‘Harry Potter’ casting. The reaction is always worried because people feel very passionately about the books, and they just don’t want to see something that is going to mess it up for them.” And just as the naysaying died down after Jennifer Lawrence debuted her Katniss makeover for “Hunger Games” on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, Clare has a hunch that unconvinced fans will soon see things as she does. “I think in the same way that Jennifer Lawrence has transformed herself into Katniss, I think he will have no problem transforming himself into Jace,” she said. “One of the things about being an actor is that you’re a chameleon and you transform yourself. And actors have done amazing jobs transforming themselves in the past, and Jamie is really enthusiastic about the role.” Read our entire interview with “Mortal Instruments” author Cassandra Clare .
