MTV Movie Awards Set Designer Gives A Sneak Peek

‘We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess,’ Anton Goss says. By Kara Warner 2010 MTV Movie Awards set Photo: MTV News While the MTV Movie Awards show itself is always packed with surprises from attendees, presenters and winners, one of the unsung, slightly under-the-radar heroes is the show’s flashy, highly technologically enhanced stage design. Will there be showers of golden popcorn? Hidden trapdoors or elevators? Performers flying from the ceiling? MTV’s Jim Cantiello recently caught up with production designer Anton Goss to get a sneak peek at his fancy set designing computer, where he showed off a few of the “looks” that will gild the Gibson Ampitheather in classic MTV gold come Sunday. “We have three main looks,” Goss offered. “We have a ‘TV look,’ we have a ‘film-reel look’ [and] I call this one my ‘pimp my ride look,’ ” he described while loading the different graphics and stage layouts on his laptop. “We’ve got gold hubcaps spinning, crazy popcorn, butter — it’s a mess.” “The ‘secret look’ is the one we’re most proud of,” Goss said with a conspiratory grin, and then offered only a vague description: “We had a lot of fun with that. … It’s shocking.” This is Goss’ second turn as production designer for the MTV Movie Awards stages. He’s a seasoned pro where TV set decor is concerned, having designed episodes of “The Bachelor,” “Last Comic Standing,” the 2010 People’s Choice Awards and the Spike Video Game Awards; he’s also made the rounds in the daytime talk-show circuit, having designed for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the latter for which he won a Daytime Emmy in 2009. Russell Brand Talks Revisiting Addiction In ‘Get Him To The Greek’

‘It’s not worth it,’ he tells MTV News of using drugs and alcohol again. ‘Not for me.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Russell Brand Photo: MTV News Russell Brand is bound to bring the laughs when he reprises his role as rock star Aldous Snow in “Get Him to the Greek,” but there’s one major disparity between the comedian and his character: While Snow regularly indulges in promiscuous sex and drug-abusing behavior, Brand has kept his distance from that kind of lifestyle since abandoning drugs and alcohol several years ago. Still, Brand’s experience as an addict proved helpful in crafting the character of Snow, as the actor told MTV News that it provided some authenticity to his performance in “Get Him to the Greek.” “Say that when you were a child, there was a time where someone stood in front of you and strangled a kitten, then you had to do a film in which there’s a scene where somebody strangles a kitten. You’d definitely remember the childhood time when that kitten-strangling happened, which would make you more authentic in the film,” he explained. “But when you go home, you’ll say, ‘Oh, that poor kitten.’ [Playing Snow] was a bit like that, except there were no kittens strangled in the making of this film. Well, there was one.” Brand said that his character’s closeness to drug culture never tempted the actor himself into relapsing: “I don’t take relapsing very seriously as a possibility in terms of thinking of it as ‘Must not relapse. Must not relapse.’ But it reminded me, ‘Don’t do drugs.’ It’s not worth it. Not for me.” That’s not to say Brand isn’t without his vices, of course. “Every day, nine times, I watch ‘Finding Nemo,’ ” he laughed. “Is that a problem? I love that little guy. He’s got that tiny fin! It makes me happy.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Ashton Kutcher Asks: ‘How Does Robert Pattinson Not Win Every Award?’

The ‘Killers’ star is just as dedicated as Twilighters to making sure RPattz dominates the MTV Movie Awards. By Eric Ditzian HOLLYWOOD — Last year, Robert Pattinson won three Golden Popcorn statutes at the MTV Movie Awards . At the 2010 show, he’s up for another three potential wins, including Best Male Performance and Best Kiss . Most avid Twilighters would say that’s pretty darn good work for the 24-year-old actor. Others might argue that such awards-show recognition just ain’t enough respect for the British heartthrob. By “others,” we mean Ashton Kutcher, who made a not entirely convincing (but nonetheless amazing) case to MTV News that Pattinson should never lose a single award — regardless of genre or gender specificity. Ever. “How does Robert Pattinson not win every award ever invented?” he asked us Tuesday night on the “Killers” red carpet, just days before Pattinson and his “Twilight” cohorts descend on the Movie Awards. “How does he not win every award ever?” Kutcher was only getting started. In an extended, dramatic-pause-assisted monologue, the King of Twitter made clear to what extent he’d be willing to go to defend the honor — and the awards-show dignity — of everyone’s favorite smoldering teen vampire. “Like, I almost got up onstage this year at the Grammys when he didn’t win and almost kicked Taylor Swift off,” he said. “Because I’m like, ‘What’s up? Robert Pattinson should have won this.’ “And the Emmys are coming up too,” he continued. “And I might go and just be like, ‘What’s up? Robert Pattinson should have won this.’ And then, at the Oscars, if ‘Precious’ is nominated for something next year again for some reason, I’ll just be like, ‘Robert Pattinson should have won this.’ “Or Ben Affleck,” he added with a deadpan grin. “One or another.” Are you as dedicated to RPattz’s awards-show dominance? MTV Movie Awards Host Aziz Ansari Gets Advice From Russell Brand, Sarah Jessica Parker, Snooki

Judd Apatow, past Movie Awards host Andy Samberg also give tips — show airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV! By Eric Ditzian Aziz Ansari Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — It might be the biggest night of his life. On Sunday, June 6, at exactly 9 p.m. ET, 27-year-old Aziz Ansari will walk out onto the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre to host the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . The seats will be filled with Hollywood’s elite, celebs will be frittering to and fro backstage as they await their various show duties, and millions of fans will be watching at home. In short, the pressure will be on … But it’s a job Aziz is ready for. From his co-starring spot on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” to his improv work on MTV’s “Human Giant” to his creation of bombastic comedian Raaaaaaaandy, one thing Ansari can be trusted to do is make people laugh, and then laugh some more. Still, the guy has got to be sweating a bit as the big day approaches. But luckily he’s got the support of Hollywood behind him, and the likes of Russell Brand, Sarah Jessica Parker and “Jersey Shore” star Snooki weighed in with advice for Ansari. “Hosting — it’s so hard!” said two-time VMA host Brand , not so much offering advice as a stern warning. “You’re there for ages. It’s all the panic, the dress rehearsals, people don’t turn up. It’s difficult.” Parker, conversely, had one helpful tip for Aziz’s body and mind. “I would say have plenty of fluids backstage, perhaps intravenously!” she said. “Jersey Shore” star Snooki — who will be MTV News’ guest correspondent on the Movie Awards red carpet Sunday — had one specific suggestion for the type of fluid Ansari would be wise to imbibe come Sunday night. “Just have a couple shots before you get on,” she said. “You’re probably going to be very nervous in front of all these celebrities, millions of people on TV. Pretty much, just down a bottle of tequila and you’re good. It washes off the nerves!” One man who’s quite familiar with those Movie Awards nerves is Andy Samberg, who hosted the show last year and was not worried about Ansari. “I don’t need to give Aziz any advice,” Samberg said. “He’s great. I think he’s gonna kill it. He’s a friend of mine and one of the funniest dudes I know. I’m really excited just to see it.” Another of the funniest dudes in Hollywood, Judd Apatow, couldn’t let Aziz assume hosting duties without giving him a good-natured ribbing. “He’s a cocky young man,” Apatow said of Ansari. “He’s not afraid. He should be afraid!” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Aziz Ansari Handicaps The MTV Movie Awards

‘I vote Christoph [Waltz] all the way,’ host says of ‘Inglourious Basterds’ star’s Best Villain nod. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Aziz Ansari Photo: Jesse Grant/ Getty Images With the 2010 MTV Movie Awards getting closer and closer to showtime (roughly four days and a few hours left to go!), we thought it would be a good idea to check in with the night’s esteemed host, Aziz Ansari , to see how he’s handling the pressure, what he’s preparing and, most importantly, who he thinks deserves to win. On getting the call to come host the show, the “Parks and Recreation” star admitted he was “excited,” yet “stunned all the people in ‘Twilight’ weren’t available.” Speaking of the famed vampire-centric franchise, Ansari said that he’s been watching the films as part of his preparation. “I watched ‘Twilight’ a bunch, ‘Avatar’ 400 times,” he said. “I’ve been stalking Daniel Radcliffe, whatever I can do to get those movies in my head.” He’s also been doing a lot of writing for the show, adding, “I want to make sure all of my short films meet the high bar met by previous hosts.” Regarding the potential winners, Ansari had some pointed opinions, particularly with the Best Villain and Best Comedic Performance categories. “I gotta throw my bit behind Christoph Waltz [“Inglourious Basterds”],” he said of the Best Villain race. “That was an incredible performance. I vote Christoph all the way.” Ansari also mentioned a character that was overlooked in that category. “In ‘The Blind Side,’ did society get nominated as Best Villain?” he joked. “That’s my vote: society. Or poverty.” So who would get up and accept that award? “I think we all would have to get up and get that award,” Ansari responded. The funnyman’s pick for Best Comedic Performance was slightly more challenging, especially since we pointed out that he wasn’t nominated in that category himself. “I know, I guess they looked over me,” he said, unfazed. “I’d have to go with Robert Pattinson in ‘Remember Me’ for that category. … No, I was a big fan of Zach Galifianakis’ performance in ‘The Hangover.’ He’s been around for so long. He’s never had the opportunity to be funny in a movie like that, and they gave it to him, and he knocked it out of the park.” Ansari ended our chat with suggestions for new categories, including Why the F— Did They Make This Movie and Best Piece of S— Performance. RZA Addresses Comments About The South That Offended Jay Electronica

‘Hip-hop to me is more a unifying force than a separating force,’ Wu-Tang Clan mastermind tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway RZA Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica got people heated — namely DJ Kay Slay — when he said some Southern MCs, such as Andre 3000 and Bun B, could roast cats from up North during an interview with TheMostInfluential.com last month. Electronica, ever the outspoken warrior, was very candid with the outlet. A few minutes into the topic, the conversation shifted to Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. We all know Jay has the utmost respect for the clan from Shaolin; he shouts them out on his mixtape banger “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” But he admitted that he took exception to some comments from the Abbot he read years ago. “He said some real ridiculously stupid, ignorant things about some South people,” Jay said. Jay, who is from New Orleans, said he was offended when RZA was quoted questioning the intelligence of some Southern MCs while talking about the quality of lyricism. “I don’t like that,” Jay explained. “That would be like me coming to New York or another place and saying you’re of a lesser intelligence because you’re not knowledgeable about my circumstance or environment. “I took offense with RZA in that,” he added. “Peace unto RZA. That’s my brother, and RZA had a great effect on me. I wouldn’t be who I am if it wasn’t for RZA and the music he made with Wu-Tang Clan. But also RZA, you said some crazy, wild sh–. At that time, we might have had a physical altercation how I really felt about it. … Going around thinking people are slow. I just wanted to say that. Again, peace to RZA, he’s a beautiful black man. He’s done a lot for our culture, a lot for humanity in general with his music and his contribution.” Well, the RZA recently sat down and talked with MTV News’ Sway and was asked about Jay Electronica’s comments. The Wu founder wasn’t aware of Jay’s comments or his music, for that matter. RZA did have a very clear recollection of some things he said in the past about the South. “I know I said a few things about the South throughout my career in different periods,” RZA told Sway. “I don’t know the exact comment, but I remember I did an article in Rap Pages years ago, ’cause me and Master P had a talk about this years ago. I was speaking on the education level in the South, how brothers drop out … in the sixth grade — some of them because they have to go to work, some of them because of the poverty, some because they’re not interested in the education system … just a lot of crazy things that people from up North had evolved from. When I was doing this article, I was taking about my own family at first. My family comes from the South. They frying fat back in the kitchen, Grandpops didn’t have more than a sixth-grade reading level. My grandma was a welfare mom. “The truth is the truth, first of all. The South has evolved later than us,” RZA added. “Based upon where we are around. You can get a book in Harlem off the streets. Books like ‘Stolen Legacy’ the ‘Isis Paper,’ you can find this stuff in the streets of Harlem. Just walking around in Manhattan. In the South, they won’t find that in the bookstores nor the streets; they have to research it. With Internet knowledge, there’s a better chance for education for all. I felt and I seen. I got cousins out there that still live in the South. They have not picked up on the wavelength of where their mind should be. But hip-hop has helped it all evolve. Hip-hop, to me, is a blessing and a mercy for the black community first. Then I’ll say for the urban community, then I’ll say for American culture.” Also while talking to Sway, RZA noted that hip-hop doesn’t belong to just one region. The entire world has embraced it and has partial ownership. “If anybody got a question of what I say, they can ask me. I fear no man. I fear no MC’s talent,” he said. “But I definitely know when you young, you feel a certain way. At one point, we as Wu-Tang was like, ‘The whole industry is wack besides Wu-Tang.’ That was our energy, our spirit. That’s how we felt until we learned, ‘Wait a minute, hold on. That’s why they talking about that.’ Hip-hop, to me, is more a unifying force than a separating force.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

‘New Moon’ Men Battle For Best Male Performance At MTV Movie Awards

Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe and last year’s winner, Zac Efron, are also in the race. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Vampires, werewolves and wizards — oh my! Toss in a time-traveling Zac Efron and a letter-writing soldier, and you have the race for Best Male Performance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Efron might have a leg up on the other guys, since he took home this very Golden Popcorn last year for “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” but Robert Pattinson , Taylor Lautner , Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum will no doubt put up a good fight. Last year’s winner returned to high school for “17 Again,” this time as a grown man trapped in a 17-year-old’s body. Can Efron prove that he’s the big man on campus again? If supernatural beings are more your thing, then “New Moon” offers up two performances that will certainly get your blood pumping — which, if you’re around Pattinson’s Edward Cullen , could be a dangerous thing. Bella Swan’s man faces off against her best friend, Jacob Black, played by a beefed-up Lautner . This is the ultimate case of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. Of course, Lautner, Pattinson and fellow “Twilight Saga” star Kristen Stewart will be at the Movie Awards on Sunday to present an exclusive new clip from “Eclipse” ! Radcliffe is making a compelling case for the Golden Popcorn, reprising his teen-wizard role in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” There are no halves here: He can either win it or lose it. It may take a little magic for Tatum to take home the prize. He made girls cry and made Amanda Seyfried swoon in “Dear John,” but he’s up against some stiff competition in this category. Dear John — we mean Tatum — we’re rooting for you! Which guy are you pulling for to win the Golden Popcorn? Tell us in the comments! Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Rules iTunes Singles Chart

The latest ‘Glee’ soundtrack has a lock on the site’s albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Though she lost out to Lady Gaga in MTV News’ summer jam 2010 poll , Katy Perry is still off to a pretty good start of the season. With the help of Snoop Dogg , the singer has notched a #1 on the iTunes singles chart for the week ending Monday (May 31) with her song of the summer contender, “California Gurls.” The top of the list, frankly, looks like a who’s who of our summer jam nominees, with B.o.B ‘s “Airplanes” coming in at #2, followed by Usher ‘s “OMG,” Ke$ha ‘s “Your Love Is My Drug,” Eminem ‘s “Not Afraid” and the actual hottest summer jam, Lady Gaga ‘s “Alejandro,” as voted on by MTV.com readers. The rest of the iTunes single chart is rounded out by La Roux ‘s “Bulletproof,” the “Glee” cast cover of Gaga’s “Poker Face,” Travie McCoy ‘s “Billionaire” and Taio Cruz ‘s “Break Your Heart.” Though iTunes does not release sales figures, the picture at the top of the site’s albums chart should be familiar to anyone who saw last week’s Billboard 200 chart, since it’s topped by the third volume of jazz-hands-worthy covers from the “Glee” crew, Glee: The Music, Vol. 3 Showstoppers. Just behind are reunited glam rock survivors Stone Temple Pilots, whose self-titled comeback album will likely top next week’s Billboard tally. Gaga hangs tough at #3 with The Fame ; followed by the Black Keys ‘ Brothers ; the “Sex and the City 2” soundtrack; B.o.B.’s debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray and yet another “Glee” compilation, Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals. The list is rounded out by Distant Relatives, the full album collaboration between rapper Nas and reggae scion Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , LCD Soundsystem ‘s This Is Happening and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now. ‘New Moon,’ The Taylors Pucker Up For MTV Movie Awards’ Best Kiss

Five smooches battle it out for Best Kiss on Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “New Moon” Photo: Summit Anything goes in the Best Kiss category at the MTV Movie Awards. Sometimes a heartfelt kiss comes out on top (see 2005 winners Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling for “The Notebook”) and sometimes a silly kiss wins (see 2002 champs Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott for “American Pie 2”). So that means at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , any of our five nominees has a chance at the Golden Popcorn. First up are Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in “The Runaways.” Girl-on-girl kisses aren’t anything new at the Movie Awards, but something feels particularly rock-and-roll about this one. And we’re pretty sure Jane and Bella won’t be making out anytime soon, outside of some “Twilight” fan fiction. Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner in “Valentine’s Day” are the next nominees. For the onetime real-life couple, their chemistry offscreen definitely translated into an adorable onscreen connection, which means they might have a good chance at this year’s show. We’d love to see them hit the stage together and accept that award — awkward! Of course “New Moon” is represented, and fan favorites Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will have Twilighters saying, “Dakota who?” Stewart and Pattinson won Best Kiss last year for “Twilight,” and with “Eclipse” right around the bend, we imagine fans are clamoring for a repeat performance at this year’s show. Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington made interspecies love sexy in “Avatar,” earning them a Best Kiss nod. While they made their relationship work in the film, it’s only a matter of time until we know if lightning will strike twice at the big show. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are nominated for their kiss in “The Proposal.” Will it be steamy enough to beat out their competition? Will the special powers of the “baby-maker blanket” be strong enough to get these two the victory? The fans must decide! Who gets your vote for Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards? Share your thoughts below! Don’t miss the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
