Judi Dench Opens Up About Macular Degeneration, Worsening Eyesight

Dame Judi Dench has been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, a condition associated with old age that is characterized by damage to one’s retina and, more often than not, leads to blindness. “I can’t read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes,” the veteran actress tells the U.K.’s Mirror . “And so somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.” Dench has undergone treatment for the disease, but there’s no definitive cure. She’ll next appear in the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall , and says she has no plans of ending her career. “As long as there is a possibility of working, I’m not going to retire,” Dench says. “If I retire, nothing will work any more, and it’s hard enough as it is.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Safe House Edges The Vow at Weekend Box Office

The Vow and Safe House were neck and neck at the box office this weekend, but Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds’ action flick narrowly eked out a #1 showing. In the second weekends in theaters for both, Safe House pulled in $24 million while The Vow , starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams grossed $23.6 million. Last week, The Vow was #1 with $41.2 million to Safe House ‘s $40.2 million. Safe House Trailer Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance made its debut at #3, making $22 million. Josh Hutcherson’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island made $20 million. A not-so-great debut at the box office? Reese Witherspoon’s This Means War , which was reportedly held for a week because of the anticipation for The Vow . It held down the #5 spot with $17.5 million.

Ghostbusters 3 in the Works, Without Bill Murray?

Who you gonna call? Not Bill Murray. Ghostbusters 3 is being actively pursued by writer / star Dan Aykroyd, but his co-star does not want any part of it apparently. The Ghostbusters retired ages ago, after a 1984 hit film, 1989 sequel, and two animated TV shows. But talk of another film has been rekindled of late. In a webcast with Empire magazine, Dan Aykroyd implied he and co-star Rick Moranis were actively working to bring Ghostbusters 3 to theaters. “If we can get the script to ‘Ghostbusters 3’ right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component,” said Aykroyd of the potential project. “None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant.” He also responded to questions that another star, Bill Murray, wasn’t into the idea, denying reports that Murray actually shredded a potential script. Murray also allegedly said “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts.” Replied Dan, “Bill Murray is not capable of such behavior.” “This is simply something that would not be in his nature. It’s not true. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business.” “We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I completely respect that.” So no script shredding but no interest either. Tough to say what a Ghostbusters movie would be like without Murray. What do you think?

Mitt Romney Sings "America the Beautiful," Awkwardness Ensues

Mitt Romney looking stiff, forced and a little awkward? There’s a stunner! We kid. While we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, as the GOP presidential hopeful reminds us, most of us are not endowed with singing abilities. In that respect: Mitt Romney … He’s just like us! Mitt Romney Sings America the Beautiful The Republican often delves into a monologue on the campaign trail about the greatness of America as seen through the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.” In Iowa, for instance, he said that the “amber waves of grain” were corn; in Florida, he tied the “spacious skies” to the state’s role in space exploration. Typically, Romney will talk-sing the lyrics, but he must have had a second cup of coffee this week, as he actually burst into song in The Villages, Fla. The crowd of mostly senior citizens sang along. The press covering Romney, who won Florida’s primary easily, wondered, “Was this really happening?” It was, and on the Tonight Show last night, Michelle Obama described Romney’s singing as “beautiful” and said the song should be sung by everyone. Classy lady. But can Mitt hold a candle to Barack singing Al Green ?! Obama Sings Al Green Who’s the better singer of these 2012 candidates?

Underworld: Awakening Wins Weekend Box Office

Kate Beckinsale’s return to the franchise propelled Underworld: Awakening to a big box office win this weekend. George Lucas’ Red Tails came in second in revenue. Those out to see Kate, who plays leather-clad vampire warrior Selene, kick some serious behind managed helped the film bring in $24.3 million its opening weekend. Was it worth it, though? Movie Fanatic’s Underworld: Awakening review is mixed, but in strictly financial terms, it easily topped Red Tails ‘ $19.4 million haul. Underworld Awakening Trailer Mark Wahlberg’s Contraband grossed $12.2 million, causing it to fall from first to third in the box office. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close pulled in $10.5 million. Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad Preview: Dogs Turn to "The Bark Side"

The higher-ups at Volkswagen must be big Star Wars fans. For the second straight year, the car maker is using George Lucas’ epic saga as inspiration for a Super Bowl commercial. A year ago, Little Darth Vader was a huge hit. So much so that the company released a teaser for the ad early here in 2012. The sequel, featuring a canine chorus barking a familiar tune, may be even better: The Bark Side – VW Super Bowl Ad Preview Barking along to the ominous “Imperial March” dressed as Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and an Ewok, these mutts will surely get people talking. Or howling, one might say … see what we did right there? The appropriate title for the spot: “The Bark Side.” Amazing.
