Black Director Chinonye Chukwu Makes History At Sundance

Read the rest here:

B lack directors are making power moves in the entertainment industry. Many of them are racking up accolades for their work while breaking down racial barriers in an effort to ensure that the next generation of Black filmmakers have a seat at the table. One of those trailblazers is Chinonye Chukwu . Chukwu recently made history at the Sundance Film Festival by becoming the first Black woman to win the Grand Jury Prize for her movie Clemency , IndieWire reported. #Sundance2019 : “Clemency” Filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu Is First Black Woman to Win Festival's Biggest Prize https://t.co/jLS5yQ2RP4 pic.twitter.com/3w88ZlmiAc — IndieWire (@IndieWire) February 3, 2019 The prize is the highest honor that is given at the festival, the news outlet writes. Chukwu’s film —which stars Alfre Woodard , Danielle Brooks , Wendell Pierce , and Aldis Hodge —is centered on a prison warden who has to carry out death row executions. The film explores how doing the executions has a psychological impact. Chukwu, who wrote and directed the film, is humbled by the honor. “When everybody was saying ‘No’ this story does not have an audience, you, Sundance and the people who have seen this film have proven that there is an audience for this film, and I thank you,” she said in a statement, according to Deadline . “I wrote this because I wanted audiences, I wanted us, I wanted myself to connect with the ecosystem of humanity’s connected to incarceration, so we as a society can stop defining people by their worst possible acts, that we can end mass incarceration, and dismantle the mass prison industrial complex, and root our societies in true justice and mercy and freedom, which is all tied to our joy inside, that nobody can ever incarcerate or execute.” The filmmaker joins a distinguished list of pivotal directors who have won the Grand Jury Prize for their U.S. Dramatic entries, including Ryan Coogler , Damien Chazelle , and Desiree Akhavan . Black women in entertainment are starting off the year strong. In January, Marsai Martin made history as Hollywood’s youngest executive producer, Regina Hall became the first Black woman to receive a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, and Taraji P. Henson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. SEE ALSO: #BlackExcellence: Taraji P. Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Meredith Says Goodbye to Her Father

“You went and got a whole new life, halfway across the world this time,” she said. “But you didn’t give a damn about the people you left behind.” Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy was an emotional one.  Catherine went under the knife for surgery when it emerged that her cancer had to be treated straight away, and Meredith weighed up whether she could say goodbye to her dying father.  Meredith was open and honest with Richard, a man who has been instrumental in her career from the get-go.  She wanted to be with him while Catherine was in surgery in the event he needed to vent, or if something didn’t quite go to plan.  However, Richard told Mer that he didn’t need her during this time and that she would be best visiting her dying father and trying to make peace with him.  Meredith wondered about whether she could actually press on and visit the man she hated, and she was in for a surprise when she did.  Thatcher was close to death. As such, he had lost lots of weight, was weak and didn’t have much will to live for longer.  He decided to quit the treatment plan because his condition was terminal, and he didn’t see much point in trying to prevent the unpreventable.  Meredith didn’t know what to say, but that was fine with Thatcher. He went on to list some of the things he did following the last time they saw each other.  Thatcher said that Lexie’s death weighed so heavily on him that he started building schools in Zimbabwe and did so until he got sick. He was also sober during that time.  That’s when Meredith realized she could not sit and allow him to talk.  “You went and got a whole new life, halfway across the world this time,” she said. “But you didn’t give a damn about the people you left behind.” That’s when we were let in on the biggest bombshell of the season: Meredith’s father did return home, but it was for Derek’s funeral. He attended, but Meredith was understandably a bit out of it following the loss of the love of her life.  What followed were emotional scenes with the father and daughter finally putting the past behind them, but it wasn’t long before Thatcher passed away.  Back at the hospital, Amelia and Koracick were given the green light by Catherine to try and cure her cancer.  Things got a little too emotional when Catherine handed Jackson her will because she was fully prepared not to survive the surgery. “I will see you when I wake up,” she promised to her husband, Richard before the surgery commenced.  Things were tense throughout the complicated procedure, especially when it emerged that the surgeons could not take out the whole tumor.  Richard said they could try doing it piece by piece and that they did. However, they could only remove 95 percent of it, confirming that there was some going to be left over.  But this was a win. Catherine could live her life normally … for now, and that was enough for her.   “I’ll operate. I’ll hug my son. Make love to my husband. Chase my Harriett,” she said. “Make mistakes. Fight about who gets to pick the movie on date night. You two have given me my life back.” What are your thoughts on how all of it played out? Taraji P Henson Talks Love For Successful Black Women, What Men Want & More

What Men Want hits theaters next week. The latest movie was super producer Will Packer that stars Taraji P Henson tells the story of Ali Davis, a successful black woman trying to make partner at a big sports agency in Atlanta that has clients like Lisa Leslie , Shaquille O’Neal and more. When she gets passed up for a big promotion to someone who isn’t as good as she is, Ali starts wonders what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world. Hoping to find answers from a psychic who makes her drink a weird concoction that suddenly allows her to hear what men are thinking. Using her newfound ability, Ali starts to turn the tables on her obnoxious male colleagues while racing to sign the next basketball superstar. This movie highlights a strong woman who isn’t afraid to make the first move on a guy, puts her career first and is willing to stop at nothing to get to the top. While watching this hilarious tale of Ali Davis I drew a parallel to some of my successful Black female friends who haven’t been able to find love. So I asked Taraji her thoughts on why men are cautious when approaching successful Black women. Taraji thinks when Black women label themselves as strong it can scar potential dates away. Taraji explained that “A lot of men feel like they don’t have anything to offer,” a successful Black woman but they need to, “Stop thinking of it in terms of material things. Usually, when a woman is successful and she’s made her way in the world and she’s got her money, she’s financially stable — What she needs and what’s often missing is the emotional support. Sometimes that’s literally what we need from a man. We need emotional support and to feel loved unconditionally.” That What Men Want star goes on to explain that when she has to go out in the world and fight her battles and prove her worth she needs a man at home who is saying, ‘Baby you can do it.’ Taraji goes on to explain how calling yourself a strong black woman can scare potential men you want to date away. In What Men Want Taraji’s ambition does come into play with her relationship interest in the film, which is played by former Underground star Aldis Hodge. The ups and downs of their relationship journey lead to some really funny on camera moments that make What Men Want extremely funny helping 2019 continue Hollywood’s run at some extremely great films. So on February 8th so see What Men Want if you want to see a funny movie that pushes gender norms while entertaining to the masses.

Dean McDermott is "Horrified and Disgusted" Over Child Body-Shamers

Dean McDermott is truly aghast at the moment. He’s nauseated. He’s angry. He’s simply at a loss for how strangers can act on the Internet. And while we’ve never exactly been a fan of Tori Spelling’s annoying husband, we must admit here: The guy has a point. Earlier this week, McDermott shared a photo of his wife and their five kids on Instagram, giving followers a look at a cute brood comprised of: Liam, 11, Stella, 10, Hattie, 7, Finn, 6, and Beau, 1. (Seriously, these two have A LOT of kids!) Expecting a few heart emojis at best and a simple lack of popularity on the post at worst, McDermott was subsequently taken aback by some of the comments alongside the photo. “Why do you let your kids get so fat?” one person asked, while another remarked on how they all looked “terrible.” Stunned by the criticism his kids encountered from these trolls, the 52-year old shot back as follows: I am absolutely horrified and disgusted by the comments being left about my children. Body shaming and bullying my children??!! What is wrong with you people??!! As mentioned previously, we’ve been rather critical of both McDermott and Spelling over the years, considering how often they seem to try and profit off their family. Not to mention how irritating it has become to continually track the status of their marriage. Like, are they getting divorced or not ?!? It’s an easy question. But we agree with Dean in this case. Call us crazy, but we think trashing a bunch of toddlers as overweight and/or unattractive is simply over the line and unacceptable. Good on McDermott for calling these losers out! The picture in question (below) was snapped of the family at a screening for the film A Dog’s Way Home, and Dean expounded in his clapback to offer some context about his family’s appearance. “For your information, we went from a long day at school to the movie. And I don’t know any child that is NOT disheveled at the end of the day. “Not to mention that just before this picture was taken, they were wrestling and running around with all the other kids that were at the movie.” He really didn’t need to justify the way everyone looks here, but we understand the instinct. McDermott wasn’t done, either: So I apologize we didn’t get the iron and steamer out to make them perfect for you. Their kids. They’re messy and dirty. That’s what they do. And what’s wrong with shopping at Target??!! Over half of America shops there. The way they grow out of clothing so quickly is astounding. Are we supposed to shop at Gucci?? These are kids folks. Messy stinky little bundles of fun, laughter and love. And this is how he wrapped up: They’re going through different growth phases, and even if our children are on the bigger side. Who cares. They’re happy and healthy and I’m sorry they don’t look like skinny supermodels. People come in all shapes and sizes. So who are you to judge. You should all be ashamed of yourselves for passing such horrible judgement on innocent beautiful children. Shame on you all!!!! Thank you to all the people who came to our defense. You’re all kind compassionate souls. Down with the haters!! Up with love!!

Twitter Debates Cleopatra’s Ancestry As Lady Gaga & Angelina Jolie Reportedly Compete To Play The Queen

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty After it was announced that Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie have reportedly been competing for the role of Cleopatra in the Egyptian Queen’s upcoming biopic, all hell broke loose on the innanets. The question plaguing folks’ minds?…Why isn’t Cleopatra being played by a woman with some melanin? After all, there is some evidence pointing to the fact that she could have been biracial . Once the debate began, Twitter’s best Egyptologists broke out their history books, with some claiming that it was more likely Cleopatra was of fully Grecian decent, while others brought out evidence pointing to the fact that Cleopatra’s mom was African. “It has been suggested–although generally not by credible scholarly sources–that Cleopatra was racially black African. To be blunt, there is absolutely no evidence for this, yet it is one of those issues that seems to take on a life of its own despite all indication to the contrary,” @elmalquerer tweeted. “The best evidence is that she was three-quarters Macedonian Greek and one-quarter Egyptian. There is no room for anything else, certainly not for any black African blood.” Source: John Rainford/WENN / WENN Another Twitter scholar tweeted some knowledge about a skeleton believed to be Cleopatra’s sister, bringing up the argument that it’s quite possible the Queen had some African blood. “In 2009, a team of archaeologists found the remains of a woman they believed to be Princess Arsinoe, Cleopatra’s sister. The researchers believe Arsinoe’s remains, found in Ephesus, Turkey, indicate that her mother (also likely Cleopatra’s) was African,” @a mnimal_lb tweeted.  “’That Arsinoe had an African mother is a real sensation which leads to a new insight on Cleopatra ’s family and the relationship of the sisters Cleopatra and Arsinoe ,’ Hilke Thuer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, who made the discovery, said at the time.” With all the possibilities that she was mixed with this or that, Cleopatra probably didn’t look like Gaga or Angelina Jolie…and someone with some color could be more historically accurate. See what else people had to say on the viral topic below and let us know if you’re down for a new Cleopatra biopic. “saw some tweets talking about a Cleopatra movie (I assume Cleopatra VII) and if you’re worried about accuracy she should probably be played by an Eastern Mediterranean performer, no?” – @kylegodbey “If you ever saw Angelina Jolie play Olympias in the movie Alexander then you’ll know why she’d be the perfect choice to play Cleopatra . And that’s that on that.” – @VCHEUBA “Can we just not make another adaption of cleopatra” – @AmburgerBear
