‘Movie Awards Punk’d Pre-Party’ will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT this Sunday, June 3, on MTV. By Gil Kaufman Kim Kardashian Photo: Tom Briglia/ FilmMagic It’s not a party until someone gets “Punk’d,” right? That’s why MTV has lined up a special episode of its signature hidden-camera show as a lead-in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . The “Movie Awards Punk’d Pre-Party” will feature Kim Kardashian and Drake getting worked by Ashton Kutcher. The punking will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT this Sunday, June 3, on MTV and will be followed by the Movie Awards, hosted by Russell Brand , beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT. In between the “Punk’d” action, viewers will be taken to the Movie Awards red carpet, where actress, dancer and singer-songwriter Kat Graham will serve as Special Style Correspondent, working alongside MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, Jim Cantiello and Sway Calloway. The crew will wrangle the stars as they walk the carpet and hang out backstage, interviewing the likes of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Chris Colfer, Chlo
Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Colin Farrell also up for Best On-Screen Transformation at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. On-screen transformations aren’t purely dominated by Autobots and Decepticons. Actors can undergo their own forms of cinematic overhauls too, from makeup-heavy makeovers to complete 180-degree turns against type to — as the case may be — shocking returns to one’s original form. All of these and more are represented in the Best On-Screen Transformation category at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . This year’s nominees include the twice-nominated Colin Farrell for his dirtbaggy turn in “Horrible Bosses” and “Hunger Games” favorite Elizabeth Banks’ perfectly pink metamorphosis as the irrepressible Effie Trinket, among others. There’s no shortage of worthy candidates for the Best On-Screen Transformation award, but which nominee will walk away feasting on Golden Popcorn? You can make that choice for yourself by voting over at MovieAwards.MTV.com — but first, let’s re-examine each of the nominees, shall we? Colin Farrell, “Horrible Bosses” The Irish actor is the epitome of the leading man: dark-haired, dark-eyed, smoky-voiced, with an enormous list of credits to his name including “S.W.A.T.” and his Golden Globe-winning turn in “In Bruges.” None of those qualities are on display in Farrell’s “Horrible Bosses” performance as coke fiend Bobby Pellitt, a balding, overweight son of a you-know-what. His physical transformation is as shocking as Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman of “Tropic Thunder” fame. It’s no less award-worthy, either. Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games” Banks was a huge “Hunger Games” fan well before the movie ever got into motion, and her adoration for the world of Panem shines brightly through her performance as the bubbly Effie. It’s no easy task trying to recognize the “Zack and Miri” actress beneath the layers upon layers of pink-and-pale powder, but trust us, she’s there — and she’ll be there for many years to come, thanks to the huge success of the first “Hunger Games” film. Johnny Depp, “21 Jump Street” We did it, guys! No, seriously, we did — MTV News long championed for a Depp cameo in Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star delivered with flying colors. Aside from the fact that Depp is virtually unrecognizable in the role, it’s the hilarious and astonishing way that his part plays out that proves just how much of a transformation this “Jump Street” throwback really was for the Oscar-nominated actor. Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn” As Jamie Foxx and Philip Seymour Hoffman will happily tell you, getting under the skin of real-life historical figures is a great way to win yourself an Oscar. That tactic didn’t work for Williams at this year’s Academy Awards, but it could very easily lead to a Golden Popcorn trophy at the Movie Awards on Sunday. Williams is virtually unrecognizable as Monroe, slipping into the iconic entertainer’s tragic life with ease. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” If I were a betting man, I’d put money on Mara taking home the Best On-Screen Transformation award. Seriously, did any of these other candidates get their no-no parts pierced for their roles? I didn’t think so! Beyond the long-term physical adjustments she made to her own body, Mara embraced punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander’s cold and calculating personality wholeheartedly, convincing us beyond a shadow of a doubt that she truly was the girl who played with fire. Pop Queen’s inclusion of lines from her ‘She’s Not Me’ makes medley seem more like dig than tribute. By John Mitchell Madonna Photo: AFP/Getty Images Madonna ‘s diva rivalry with Lady Gaga may be taken up a notch when her MDNA tour kicks off Thursday at Tel Aviv, Israel’s Ramat Gan Stadium. In new rehearsal footage , the 53-year-old legend is seen singing a mashup of her “Express Yourself” and Gaga’s “Born This Way” that concludes with a few lines from Madonna’s copycat-shaming “She’s Not Me.” Last year, when Lady Gaga released her hit single “Born This Way,” controversy erupted over the song’s similarity to Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” (Never mind that much of the resemblance is rooted in both songs’ use of a pretty common disco chord progression.) At first, things seemed cool between the two singers. They’d always gotten along publicly, and Gaga told Jay Leno that M’s camp reached out to say all was well in the diva-verse with regard to the songs’ similarities (something later denied by Madonna’s people). The whole thing appeared to have blown over until earlier this year, when Madonna was promoting her movie “W.E.” and her Super Bowl halftime performance during an ABC News interview. Madonna was asked what she thought of the comparisons, and in response she called Lady Gaga “reductive.” Gaga’s been pretty quiet throughout, but it’s hard not to wonder if she’ll stay that way once word of this latest swipe makes its way to her ears. (Gaga is currently in Asia on her tour, and she was recently forced to cancel a planned show in Indonesia after receiving threats from fundamentalist Islamic groups in the country.) New leaked footage from rehearsals for Madonna’s own road show showcases a reportedly planned mashup of “Express Yourself” and “Born This Way,” and while the resemblance between the two songs remains as striking as ever, that’s not the real story. Just those two songs layered together could have been fun: The two stars certainly have overlapping fanbases, who no doubt would have delighted in the winking acknowledgement of M’s influence on Gaga. But Madonna complicates things by concluding the medley with a few lines from her Hard Candy track “She’s Not Me,” a song about Madonna being emulated by another woman. The inclusion of “She’s Not Me” makes the medley seem like yet another scathing dig at Gaga. It’s unknown whether Madonna was just goofing around during rehearsals or whether she plans to include that final digging refrain throughout her tour. Is Madonna taking things too far, or are we misreading things? Good-natured ribbing or mean-spirited digging? You tell us in the comments below! Related Artists Madonna Lady Gaga
Snow and her Huntsman meet the dwarves in MTV’s Sneak Peak Week preview. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures Kristen Stewart came through with more than juicy scoop about her role in “Snow White and the Huntsman” when she sat down with MTV News on Tuesday night (May 29) as part of Sneak Peek Week : KStew also brought an exclusive clip from the movies, which opens this Friday. In the teaser, Snow White (Stewart) and the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) are seen hanging upside down from a tree after being captured by dwarves. To escape, the Huntsman offers them gold, but when the dwarves refuse, Snow assumes it’s because they have allegiances to Queen Ravenna. In fact, one of the dwarves says they “lost everything when the King died” thanks to the evil queen’s ways. The king, it is revealed, was Snow’s dad. And it turns out she, too, lost it all when the Queen took over power. Another dwarf, who can “see into” Snow’s light, tells her she “is destined to bring an end to the darkness.” What happens next will be revealed when the film opens on June 1. In addition to Stewart and Hemsworth, the film also stars Charlize Theron as the queen and Prince Charming himself, Sam Claflin, who joined Stewart for MTV’s sit-down. The flick is directed by Rupert Sanders. “SWATH” kicked off our MTV Sneak Peek Week festivities , which will also include chats with the casts of “That’s My Boy” (Wednesday), “Magic Mike” (Thursday) and “Rock of Ages” (Friday), all week on MTV and MTV.com. Check back every night at 11 p.m. ET as Josh Horowitz conducts Q&A sessions with the actors live from the 5 Towers on Universal CityWalk. Fans can get in on the action on Twitter using the hash tag #MTVSneak. Stewart will be on hand at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, where she’ll not only be a presenter but also vie for Best Kiss after being nominated for her smooch with Robert Pattinson in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” (The film is up for Movie of the Year.) I don’t recall the 1994 Pauly Shore/Andy Dick effort In the Army Now being a “huge box office success and fan favorite,” but I’m happy to take the co-stars’ words for it if it means leaving well-enough alone and not foisting In the Army Again on an unsuspecting population still reeling from a decade of war abroad. Even if it means not seeing them save “Katey Parry [sic] from a USO show gone bad” — our national psyche has endured enough, has it not? That’s all I’ve got for this announcement , which unfortunately coincided with Memorial Day weekend and will not be ignored : Beverly Hills (MMD Newswire) May 23, 2012 — (www.FilmOn.com) – Yesterday, over looking Cannon Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills, Pauly Shore was a guest on Andy Dick Live, a weekly live internet TV show filmed at FilmOn.TV Studios. Among girls in bikinis and Andy Dicks [sic] usual group of crazies, Andy and Pauly discussed their past films including their huge box office success and fan favorite, In The Army Now . “I’ve always said we should do In The Army Again ,” said Andy Dick. “We should rescue Katey Parry [sic] from a USO show gone bad or something.” Pauly Shore loved the idea. “We just need a script and someone to back the project and I’m in.” Billionaire and FilmOn.TV CEO Alki David jumped in, “I’ll back it if both of you star in it.” Right there streaming live, film history was made. Andy Dick says a treatment is already written and they will be writing the script as soon as possible. Good grief. I mean, where’s Judicial Watch to investigate these guys’ military-flick aspirations when you need them? [ MMD via AV Club ]
You’ve heard of the erotic bestseller 50 Shades of Grey . You may have even read a steamy passage or two here and there. But why torture yourself by actually reading E.L. James’ florid-melodramatic prose when one animated fan trailer gives you all the essential need-to-knows — including the best-worst cringe-inducing scene of the book? Now, there are a lot of cringe-inducing scenes in 50 Shades of Grey and its subsequent sequels, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed , involving college grad/virgin Anastasia Steele and her handsome would-be boyfriend/BDSM master Christian Grey . (Spoilers ahead!) This is because young Ana is a whiny pleaser who submits to bondage and spankings and such in the hope that she can cure the handsome deviant Christian of his kinky ways, and also because Ana is a naive young thing who can’t work technology or remember to eat all by herself. Which is how things like The Bathroom Scene come to bear. (Skip ahead to Chapter 23 if you’re reading along at home!) Forget the whips and every-five-minutes sex and interior monologues between Ana and her “inner goddess” — here’s a scene that explains the Ana-Christian relationship in a nutshell, in which he takes the liberty of yanking out her tampon so they can have sex . (Courtesy of YouTube user Philiafelice, who strikes the right balance of incredulity and real talk in her breakdown of 50 Shades and its trashy appeal.) Splash! I cannot wait to see how they even attempt to pull this off in the movie. [ philiafelice via @evafay ]
The Weinstein Co. has unveiled a batch of new images from Quentin Tarantino Christmas Western Django Unchained , including shots of Jamie Foxx as the former slave-turned-bounty hunter Django, Christoph Waltz as his German comrade in arms Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie. But it’s the image of Foxx sidled up to a bar next to Franco Nero — the original Django — that gets bonus points for film nerdage. Click here for the full gallery of new images from Django Unchained . Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive. Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…’ Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is produced by Stacey Sher, Reginald Hudlin and Pilar Savone. The executive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. by The Weinstein Company on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures. Django Unchained is in theaters December 25.
Universal has yet to release an official trailer for Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables , but USA Today has a first look at images of Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Co. in character. Visually, the musical film looks beautiful, but the jury’s out on how it sounds until we get more of an official listen. Take a peek at the Les Mis cast in the muted hues of 19th century France and chime in after the jump. Below, take a gander at Samantha Barks as Eponine, the role that the rumor mill had us thinking would go to Taylor Swift. Everyone else looks period-handsome, but Hathaway is striking, rocking Fantine’s shorn look while seemingly channeling Maria Falconetti’s Joan of Arc. Find more pics over at USA Today .
