Dolores Hope, the 102-year-old widow of Bob Hope, passed away from natural causes on Monday in Los Angeles. Be Afraid: Ryan Gosling Threatens Early Retirement

It’s often said that we get the culture we deserve, and maybe — judging by the soft reception for Drive and the general post-Venice quietude around next month’s The Ides of March — the adage is true. Why else would Ryan Gosling, one of the most respected screen talents of his generation, publicly contemplate getting out of the business early?

Watch the Impressionistic U.K. Teaser Trailer for Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights

“This is something of a pointillist Wuthering Heights , a story told more with dots and dashes than with long, bold strokes,” wrote Movieline’s Stephanie Zacharek after seeing Andrea Arnold’s bold take on the classic novel upon its Venice Film Festival debut. Now that the film’s first teaser has debuted, you can see for yourself what she meant, windswept longing gazes and foggy moors and elemental snatches of scenery and all.

Talkback: What’s the Worst Line in Film History?

Movies teem with ridiculous dialogue, but only a few pop with memorably bad one-liners. Our friends at BuzzFeed compiled a list of 20 dubious movie lines, and while I’d have suggested more material from The Room or, say, anything in Black Swan , I’m more interested in what the Movieline hivemind thinks are worst. What say you, elite?

Live-Blogging the Shia LaBeouf-Directed Marilyn Manson Music Video ‘Born Villain’

So, Shia LaBeouf directed a music video for Marilyn Manson’s “Born Villain.” It is so disturbing that Jen Yamato covered her eyes, I shrieked for ten seconds and a Nazi soldier applauded. (All three of those things actually happened, although one happened in the video and the other two happened at Movieline HQ. ) So rather than let you watch this Jodorowsky-themed horror video alone, we live-blogged the six-minute spectacle so that we could experience it together. Warning: The 18+ rating is well-deserved.

Brad Pitt Thought Angelina Jolie’s First Screenplay Was ‘Not That Bad’

One of the more mysterious curios of the fall movie season is Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey . In an interview with Vanity Fair (on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles this week), Jolie says that she wrote the script for the Bosnian War-set romance while she was ill and quarantined from her children. “I don’t watch TV and I wasn’t reading anything. So I started writing. I went from the beginning to the end. I didn’t know any other way.” Afterward, she passed the draft to Brad Pitt; what did her super-famous husband think? “He called and said, ‘You know, honey, it’s not that bad.'” Oh. Maybe leave that one off the poster. [ VF. com ]
