Now Playing: Stephanie Zacharek’s Video Review of Despicable Me!

To hear Movieline’s chief critic Stephanie Zacharek tell it, this is some kind of sterling weekend for new movies: A pair of releases crested just shy of the prestigious 10-out-of-10 mark, including The Kids Are All Right and the dandy animated entry Despicable Me . You’ve heard (and read ) Stephanie’s take on Kids , but what exactly makes Despicable Me worthy of this glory? As the great Warner Wolf would say, “Let’s go to the videotape!”

The Big Brother Repulsion Index: Hot Dog, It Has Begun

Last night, CBS put an Orthodox Jewish podiatrist into a hot dog costume, broadcast sexually suggestive physical challenges, and introduced us to a red-headed bimbo who thought yarmulkes were called “Yom Kippurs.” Yes, Big Brother season has begun. The Julie Chen-hosted reality show is impressive because its premise — locking thirteen untalented individuals in a house and streaming their every move for audience’s voyeuristic pleasure — demands a repulsive sub-category of fame-seeking humans: the kind of person that masturbates in a cardboard box , knowing that his every motion will be seen by millions of people in their family room. This season, Movieline is joining in the Big Brother fun by ranking the most vile houseguests after each degrading episode. Baruch haba!

Boardwalk Empire Gets a Premiere Date

Despite some slight apprehension after watching the most recent trailer — the one with Steve Buscemi as Tony Soprano in period dress — there are few upcoming series that have me more excited than HBO’ s Boardwalk Empire . That happens when the pilot is directed by Martin Scorsese, written and created by Sopranos stalwart Terence Winter, and stars Buscemi, Michael Shannon, Michael Pitt and Michael K. Williams (though where is Michael Weston when you need him?). Well, the news just came into Movieline HQ: The series will premiere on Sunday, September 19 at 9pm, meaning Mad Men will have some testosterone-y company on your DVR.

The Welcome to the Rileys Trailer: Kristen Stewart Meets Tony Soprano

When you hear the words ” Kristen Stewart Hooker Movie ,” the mind reels with possibilities of scandal and exploitation. But then you see the new trailer for Welcome to the Rileys , a Sundance hit from director Jake Scott (a.k.a. Ridley Scott’s son, thus fulfilling the “You Must Mention Ridley Scott Once Per Day” quota here at Movieline), and you realize it’s anything but what you would expect. Even with the presence of Tony Soprano. Who’s ready for some derivative family drama?

So You Think You Can Dance Quick Kicks: Is Our Alex Going Home?

Clasp your hands over your mouth and mutter something incoherent about Jesus, because tragedy hit So You Think You Can Dance this week. Alex Wong, the heavily favored contestant and candidate for Dance Emperor, busted his Achilles tendon while rehearsing a high-flying Bollywood routine. It gets worse: Because he couldn’t perform last night, he’s relegated to tonight’s bottom three dancers. If he’s not well enough to dance this evening, the judges have no choice but to throw his injured body into the street. You heard it right, Alex Wong stands a very good chance of elimination tonight, and he didn’t even drop his dance partner like Robert did. We’re in hell! Before our emotions get the best of us, let’s analyze the remaining dancers’ work from last night and trade secrets about who has the nicest bone structure.

Grease Director Randal Kleiser on the Sing-A-Long, the Sequel, and Rooming with George Lucas

There were all sorts of reasons that Grease shouldn’t have worked: it was coming at the tail end of the musical’s golden age in 1978, it was a period piece, and its stars were way, way too old to be playing teenagers — yet something about that perfect lead casting of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and those irresistible songs made it a phenomenon. Now, as Paramount re-releases Grease in a new sing-a-long format, Movieline called up director Randal Kleiser to reminisce and dish. Want to know what he thinks of Grease 2 , modern-day musicals, or his very first role in a student film directed by George Lucas? Read on.

The 5 Most Stunning Emmy Snubs of 2010

No matter how much goodwill the Emmy Awards engendered by nominating Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton for Friday Night Lights , when Tony Shalhoub is still hearing his name called for Monk , you know there must have been some snubs. Here now are the Movieline-approved five most egregious. Set your outrage level to apoplectic and click ahead to witness the carnage.

Checking In with Jeff Fahey: Apologies, Ambassadorships, and a New Role

From time to time, Movieline likes to check in with actor Jeff Fahey. Wouldn’t you, if given the opportunity? Jeff Fahey is many things: an actor, a dancer trained at the Joffrey Ballet, a humanitarian, and (of course) the Lawnmower Man. You can add one more to that list: Jeff Fahey is a damn good liar! Last time we checked in with him , Fahey swore up and down that his Movieline-beloved character Frank Lapidus had been killed off Lost in an ambiguous submarine explosion, so you can imagine our surprise when he popped up in the series finale to fly most of the main cast off the island, once and for all. Fahey’s been out of the country since then, but now that he’s back, he called up Movieline to apologize for his ruse, discuss the finale, and exclusively announce two bits of good news: an ambassadorship and a part in a new Gary Oldman film.
