Hampton University Marching Band To Perform In Rome

H ampton University’s marching band will be taking their talents to Rome in 2020. According to Wavy News , the band has been enlisted to perform in the Rome New Year’s Parade; making the school the first historically Black college or university to do so. The event is a cumulative celebration of the World Day of Peace and the Pope’s blessing for the New Year. The band will also have the opportunity to perform for local communities during their time in Italy. “This wonderful opportunity will put Hampton University on an international spotlight and bring some attention to what we’re doing with the band at Hampton. Over the last year, we have been focusing on recruiting talented musicians, dancers, color guard and majorettes. Our mission is not just to build better band students, but to shape and mold students so that they are academically proficient and have high moral character,” band director Dr. Thomas Jones said in a statement released by the university. “This trip validates what we’re doing. The strength of the program is growing. Traveling is a great incentive for new and current students and we are really looking forward to this exciting journey.” Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey echoed his sentiments, adding that the band continues to “uphold the standard of excellence as being one of the best marching bands in the nation.” News about the band performing in Italy comes on the heels of their performance in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. The HBCU has had a few firsts over the past few months. In November, Hampton University made history by becoming the first historically Black college and university to add a women’s varsity triathlon team to their list of sports programs. SMH: R. Kelly’s Lawyer Admits The Singer Married Aaliyah At 15, But Claims She Lied About Her Age

Source: Scott Legato / Getty R. Kelly’s Lawyer Confirms His Client Married Aaliyah At 15-Years-Old R. Kelly has finally confirmed to the public that he was indeed briefly married to Aaliyah –well, through his lawyer, at least. Steve Greenberg appeared on Good Morning America in an effort to address the recent allegations of rape, abuse, and sexual misconduct that are being stacked up against his client following the Lifetime docuseries, Surviving R Kelly . When Kelly’s representative was asked if his client had ever been in a relationship with a woman who was below the age of consent, he replied that the singer ‘absolutely’ denied being with any underage girls, which was quickly called into question. “Was he married to Aaliyah when she was 15?” asked reporter Linsey Davis. Greenberg replied, surprisingly admitting that Kelly did marry her, but deflecting onto another famous relationship. “He was married to her when she was 15. Elvis was married to Priscilla,” replied Greenberg, who did not pause or miss a beat. This was a reference to the marriage of Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, who was almost 22 when she married the rock star, which she completed with her parents’ blessing. The reported continued to hound Greenberg on the subject saying, “So then, 15 is not of the age of legal consent, right?” But of course, Greenberg had an excused for Kelly, claiming he wasn’t in the wrong here because Aaliyah was dishonest. “Right except my understanding is that she did not claim to be 15. And in order to get married she had to lie about her age,” claimed the lawyer. “And he is saying he had no idea?” inquired Davis. To which Greenberg confirmed: “No idea.” But Aaliyah’s age still isn’t the only thing that’s disheartening about her relationship with Kelly. Jim DeRogatis , the reporter who has pursued the sexual and physical abuse allegations against R. Kelly since 2000, was a guest on the New York Times’ podcast series  The Popcast  with host Jon Caramanica last year. During the conversation, DeRogatis recalled when he first went through the documents that related to R. Kelly and Aaliyah’s annulment. “The annulment of the Aaliyah marriage and Aaliyah’s legal claim against him had been sealed in Detroit…they were sealed by the court but those documents were provided to me,” DeRogatis  revealed . “It’s a harrowing document, a non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.” The marriage was reported by Vibe magazine  shortly after the release of Aaliyah’s debut album,   Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number . The magazine found that the official Illinois wedding certificate falsified Aaliyah’s age, listing the late singer as 18. But the aforementioned document–vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse against Kelly–hasn’t really been mentioned when discussing various allegations, even in the  Surviving R. Kelly  documentary series that has been the catalyst for all the current R. Kelly conversations.   Continue reading →

Ariana Grande hasn’t been shy about singing about her break-up from Pete Davidson . A few months ago, she released the music video for her single “thank u, next. The single referenced the lessons she’s learned from her long list of exes. Grande also sang about a former boyfriend on her buzz single “Imagine,” which was released in December. She rehabilitated her image to make it look as if she’s an independent woman. But fans noticed that Grande has been spending a lot of time with fellow donut licker and ex-boyfriend, Ricky Alvarez , lately. Grande is known to jump from relationship to relationship. She can’t fool anybody. The 25-year-old also wasted no time dropping hints about her upcoming single. From the looks of it, it could involve her public engagement and rapper Biggie Smalls . The pint-sized singer shared the album artwork for her new song “7 Rings” on Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 10. She captioned the photo with seven ring emojis and the date: “1.18.” It looks like she’s hinting towards a Jan. 18 release date. Ariana also shared some super sexy photos from what looks to be the music video for her new single. Fans noticed that the new song may sample a track from the Notorious B.I.G. Grande shared several clips of herself and her pet pig, Piggy Smallz, listening to some of the rapper’s iconic hits. She took to her Instagram Stories to share a screenshot of Biggie’s song “Gimme the Loot” with a black heart and ring emoji. Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson got engaged in June 2018 after just weeks of dating.   He gave her a pear-shaped Greg Yuna engagement ring that was worth $93,000. She traded it in for a Tiffany’s friendship ring that she bought with seven of her best friends after her split in October. Even weirder than that is the fact Kim Kardashian has been in the spotlight for even longer, partying with the likes of Paris Hilton . Even though we’ve seen Kimberly and her family since the early days of their show, it’s still shocking to look at some throwbacks every once in a while and see how the 1% used to live in the days before reaching their ultimate level of fame. That’s where Kim comes in.
