Jesus Take The Wheel: 41-Year-Old Oregon Man Dies After Falling Into A Running Meat Blender

Yikes. We couldn’t imagine falling into a meat blender Man Falls Into Meat Blender According to Yahoo News In a horrible industrial accident, a Clackamas, Ore. worker was killed when he fell into a running blender at a meat-processing plant, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said. According to an April 30 Yahoo! News report, 41-year-old Portland native Hugo Avalos-Chanon, an employee of DCS Sanitation Management, was cleaning the giant blender overnight on Friday. Interstate Meat Distributors owns the plant, but they contract out with DCS to have their equipment cleaned nightly. Paramedics and sheriff’s deputies were called around 11:45 p.m. Friday, after Avalos-Chanon was found entangled in the machinery. The emergency stop button was hit, but it was too late, Thompson said. Firefighters returned the following day to dismantle the machine and remove the body. Dr. Cliff Young, a deputy state medical examiner, said Avalos-Chanon died from “blunt-force injuries and chopping wounds.” No foul play is expected. Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are now examining evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing records, especially after an OSHA review last year found that the machines were not locked during the tear-down process for cleaning. The inspector said last fall that an “unexpected start-up of the machine” could cause injuries. While it has not been ruled out that the accident was caused by a machine-start up, Melanie Mesaros, Oregon OSHA spokeswoman, cautioned against jumping to conclusions. “It’s way too early to say,” Mesaros said. “We’re just starting our investigation, which could take six months.” Darrin Hoy, president of Interstate Meat Distributors, said company officials are cooperating fully with investigators, but Avalos-Chanon’s death was “extremely unfortunate” and difficult to discuss. “We’re not looking forward to reliving through any of it again,” Hoy said. Making It Rain On Them Hoes: Cast of “Kinky Boots” Leads The 67th Annual Tony Awards With 13 Nominations

Good news for you Broadway fans. “Kinky Boots” Leads Tony Award Nominations According to NY Times The new Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” led the pack with 13 nominations for the 67th annual Tony Awards, including for best musical, director, actor, score and choreographer, while its chief rival “Matilda” had 12 nominations in many of the same categories. The nominations were announced at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The revival of “Golden Boy” had the most nominations of any play, eight, with the new Tom Hanks play “Lucky Guy” close behind with six nominations. Lead acting nods went to only a handful of the Hollywood stars performing on Broadway this season – Mr. Hanks, Laurie Metcalf, Holland Taylor and Cicely Tyson. Best Musical Horse Race The race for best musical may have four nominees – “Bring It On,” “Matilda,” “Kinky Boots,” and “A Christmas Story” – but only two real contenders: “Matilda” and “Kinky Boots,” both song-and-dance shows with large casts that center on an underdog storyline. “Matilda,” created in England and based on a Roald Dahl children’s novel, received the best reviews of the season for a new musical; “Kinky Boots,” created by the Broadway veterans Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Mitchell and based on a 2005 British movie, received slightly more mixed reviews. Best Score If Tony nominee Cyndi Lauper wins for best score for the musical “Kinky Boots,” she would become the first woman to ever win solo in the category. Earlier winners Betty Comden, Lynn Ahrens and Lisa Lambert shared Tonys for best score with their songwriting partners. This is Ms. Lauper’s first Tony nomination – indeed, “Kinky Boots” is her first Broadway show – and some producers are already predicting that she will edge out her toughest competition in the category, Tim Minchin, who wrote the score for “Matilda.” The other nominees are the scores for “A Christmas Story” and “Hands on a Hardbody.” Best Actor and Actress in a Musical The winners in the lead acting categories for musicals are often hard to predict; the same is true this year, though the contests are relatively easy to define. The best actor race is likely to be between two men in drag: The British actor and Broadway newcome Bertie Carvel, as the sadistic headmistress Miss Trunchbull in “Matilda,” and the New York theater veteran Billy Porter as the drag queen Lola in “Kinky Boots.” If there’s a dark horse in the field, it’s Stark Sands, who plays the straight man Charlie in “Kinky Boots.” Among the dozen or so musicals in contention for nominations, only four received a sizable number: The new shows “Kinky Boots” (13) and “Matilda” (12) and the revivals “Pippin” (10) and “Cinderella” (9). Meanwhile “Motown: The Musical,” the biggest commercial hit among the new shows, was snubbed in the best musical and best actor categories, reflecting the mixed judgments from critics. The Tony Awards ceremony is June 9 on CBS. Congratz to the cast of “Kinky Boots” and the other nominees! AP

Will ‘Kinky Boots’ Be The Next ‘Hairspray’?

I saw Kinky Boots  at the Al Hirschfeld Theater on Broadway the other night, and by intermission, I was convinced that it could be another  Hairspray : a movie that finds success as a Broadway musical and then returns to the big screen as a movie musical. You may recall that  Hairspray started out as a modestly budgeted 1988 film by John Waters that starred Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad , the late, great drag queen Divine , in his last movie performance, as Tracy’s mother, and Blondie’s Deborah Harry .  The film did okay at the box office but became a cult favorite when it was released to the home video market. But that was just the beginning of its journey through American popular culture. In 2002, producer Margo Lion , composer Marc Shaiman and writer Thomas Meehan adapted Hairspray for the stage. They cast Marissa Jane Winokur in the role of Tracy and Harvey Fierstein in the part that Divine played, Tracy’s mother, and ended up with a Broadway hit. Re-enter New Line , which distributed the original film, and became involved in re-adapting the stage version as a movie musical. This time, John Travolta played Tracy’s mother , and, once again, audiences bought tickets. Like Hairspray , Kinky Boots began as a modest 2005 comedy film that was written by Tim Firth ( Calendar Girls ) and Geoff Deane , directed by Julian Jerrold and starred a baby-faced Joel Edgerton , who’s about to look a whole lot more manly in The Great Gatsby .  The film has only grossed a little over $10 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo , but it enjoys cult status among the trendsetting fashion crowd — as does Waters, by the way — because it involves two favorite topics: shoes and drag queens. The movie and the play are loosely based on a real story: At a time when staid Northampton, England shoe manufacturers were going out of business, the WJ Brooks Ltd. shoe manufacturer there reinvented itself by making racy boots and shoes for drag queens and the fetish trade. The company is now known as Divine Footwear (yet another odd tie to the original  Hairspray .) In the movie (and stage production), the factory’s reluctant new proprietor Charlie — who takes over when his father dies — hires a drag queen named Lola as chief shoe designer, which causes much controversy among his conservative blue-collar workforce When you check out the clip below, keep in the mind that the original movie was not a musical, but it did feature this musical performance by Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor): These Boots Are Made For Talkin’ Cut to April 4, when Kinky Boots , the musical opened on Broadway. Produced by  Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig , the show’s book was written by Harvey Fierstein — there’s that Hairspray connection again — with songs and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper , who knows how to write upbeat, crowd-pleasing music. The night I saw the production,  the crowd loved it, and, last week,  Kinky Boots  enjoyed its first grosses over $1 million as well a berth among the five top-earning shows on Broadway. Here’s a glimpse: Sole Power The show also seems to be drawing noteworthy producers who’ve worked in both theater and film, including David Geffen ( Dreamgirls ) and Paula Wagner ( Jack Reacher , The Heiress ). As you can see from the photo above, Waters and Barry Manilow also caught the play. If Kinky Boots continues to pack in the out-of-town crowds, I could see it enjoying a second life as a movie musical. I bet most of the cast of Les Miserables would be interested. Who would you cast? DMX, Swizz Beatz Crash Alicia Keys Concert: Watch Now!

Amazingly, this DMX story does not involve a mug shot. Seriously. Just an awesome video of him crashing an Alicia Keys concert! DMX at Alicia Keys Concert The crowd went nuts at Madison Square Garden when Swizz Beatz – Keys’ husband – and DMX came out an unexpected rendition of the “Ruff Ryders Anthem.” Then, after they shut ’em down and opened up shop, the duo launched into “Party (Up in Here)” … and it was enough to make people lose their minds. Up in here. Sorry.

Presenting: Game of Thrones, The Musical!

Game of Thrones without HBO would mean less cursing, less bloodshed and far fewer boobs. It’s depressing to ponder, we know. But what if George R.R. Martin sold the rights to this blockbuster series to Disney instead of the aforementioned cable network? What might Westeros look like in that case? Some hilarious folks on the Internet have taken a guess in the following video, which hilariously features singing versions of our favorite characters. Watch now: Game of Thrones: The Musical Game of Thrones Season 3 continues this Sunday nights. With plenty of nudity, we’re sure.
