F—ed Up Fear ‘Tokio Hotel Zealots’ In Musical March Madness

Toronto band upset Mumford & Sons in round one and face Radiohead in round two; vote now in all second-round matchups! By James Montgomery F—ed Up’s Damian Abraham Photo: Getty Images Of all the first-round upsets in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament (and there were a lot), none was as shocking as Toronto hardcore act F—ed Up’s trouncing of top-seeded — and heavily favored — Mumford & Sons. Except to F’ed frontman Damian “Pink Eyes” Abraham, that is. He saw this one coming from the day the bracket was revealed. “I think anyone who bet on them was a fool, because, let’s just be honest, if their fans were really living the Mumford & Sons way, they’re probably not the most technologically savvy individuals in the world,” he laughed. “It’s all based on, you know, the 1920s, so the Internet at that point was just a wireless typing device, and it takes a lot longer to spell out ‘Mumford & Sons’ in Morse code. How many dips and lines is that?” Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! Of course, he was joking — he never really thought F—ed Up stood a chance against the mighty Mumford — though, as three years of Musical March Madness has proven, anything can happen. And as the first round wore on, and F’ed closed the gap, Abraham actually started believing. Even if he didn’t want to tell anyone. “Mumford & Sons have sold, conservatively, 100 times as many records as us; and they are a very popular band. … I mean, they’ve played with Bob Dylan. I thought it was a sure defeat,” he said. “I gotta admit, I really hate sports, but I think everyone at their core has a competitive nature, and as soon as I saw there was a glimmer of hope that we might win, it felt amazing. But, like, I didn’t want to start shouting, ‘We’re going to win!’ or anything, because I still wasn’t sure, you know? “And I’ll be honest: I never wanted to be in a really popular band,'” he continued. “So it really felt strangely touching, because it was like, ‘Wow, this many people cared enough to take time from looking at pornography to vote for me? That’s awesome.’ ” So now, having dispatched of Mumford, F—ed Up draw #8 Radiohead in round two — voting closes Sunday at midnight ET — with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. And, well, let’s just say Abraham isn’t confident about his band’s chances (“It’s like a commuter college taking on Duke,” he laughed). Though, as Sum 41 proved with their miracle run to the Elite Eight in last year’s MMM tourney, stranger things have happened. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And if F—ed Up somehow manage to take down Radiohead, Abraham has already done some advanced scouting on his band’s next opponent, Tokio Hotel. And he’s sufficiently terrified, to say the very least. “This is a tournament that’s not going to get easier; it’s not like we’re going to get to the next round and find ourselves facing No Use for a Name. It’s just going to get worse as time goes on,” he said. “Mumford & Sons? That was just a taste of what’s to come; we’re dealing with people that have really, really rabid — to the point of being mentally unstable — fans now, and F—ed Up’s fans are just a bunch of nerds. We’re nothing against these Tokio Hotel zealots. I’m worried they’re going to firebomb my house or take out my knees.” MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out. Lady Gaga Opens Up About Sometimes Feeling ‘Worthless’

Singer discusses being bullied as a child and her plan not to speak to the media ‘for a very long time’ on ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga talks with Oprah in “Oprah’s Next Chapter” Photo: Harpo/OWN Lady Gaga confessed she wants to have enough children to form a “soccer team” when she sat down with talk show maven Oprah Winfrey for “Oprah’s Next Chapter.” In the intimate chat, which took place at Gaga’s childhood home in New York City, the never-press-shy Gaga made another big announcement on the show. “Other than this interview, Oprah, I don’t intend to speak to anyone for a very long time. I have to shut out the noise,” Mother Monster told Winfrey, according to Gossip Cop . “The latest thing I do is I don’t read a damn thing. No press, no television. If my mom calls and says, ‘Did you hear about?’ I don’t want to know nothing about anything that is going on … I shut it all off.” Gaga’s mother was on hand for parts of the interview, sharing that in Gaga’s early days, her father thought she had a “screw loose” while she was performing at downtown New York nightclubs in her bra while lighting hairspray on fire. The superstar added that there’s one thing about her current act that her mother isn’t a big fan of. “She doesn’t like when I swear,” Gaga said, with her mother adding, “You’re effective without it.” Another part of the candid chat also focused on Gaga’s youth, during which she said she was frequently bullied. “There really is no difference between the bully and the victim,” she said. “I would like to do a psychological autopsy on as many bullies and victims as possible … How do we understand what breeds hatred, what breeds anger?” She added that despite all “all the praise you receive, something inside of you is scarred by those experiences … sometimes I feel worthless.” Parts of the special were also filmed at Harvard University last month. The singer and the talk show host were on hand at the prestigious college to launch Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation . “I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! … Thank you from all of us — from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we’re doing today,” Gaga said at the launch. She explained that the foundation seeks to empower the youth of America, adding, “How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?” Related Videos MTV First: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Paramore, Evanescence Survive To Second Round Of Musical March Madness

Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Black Keys get bounced. Second-round voting is now under way in all Musical March Madness matchups! By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: Getty Images After one week of MTV’s Musical March Madness , about the only sure thing is that there really is no sure thing. Because with one round in the books, we’re bidding adieu to three of our top-seeded bands — the Foo Fighters (bested by James Durbin), Mumford & Sons (shocked by F—ed Up) and the Black Keys (nipped by AWOLNATION) — upsets that prove no one is safe and assure us that, much like the actual NCAA tournament, everyone’s bracket is irrevocably broken (shout out to Mizzou and Duke … thanks, guys!). Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And though they survived, several other top-tier bands were taken down to the wire. In the West, third-seeded Blink-182 got by #14 Korn by a razor-thin margin, while #5 Linkin Park narrowly avoided an upset at the hands of #12 At the Drive-In. Over in the East, #2 Coldplay outlasted #15 Arctic Monkeys in a tightly contested thriller, and #3 Florence and the Machine needed a late rally to put away #14 Refused. But forget about style points: When it’s tournament time, all that matters is winning, and there are still 32 bands remaining in the quest for the MMM championship. And it’ll be up to you to guide them there: second-round voting is now under way in our interactive bracket and will run until Sunday, March 25, at midnight ET. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! So, whose dreams remain intact, and who was left to pick up the pieces? Let’s take a look back at all the first-round matchups! Midwest Upsets aplenty in the Midwest, as top seed the Black Keys were bounced on a last-second buzzer-beater by #16 AWOLNATION (total margin of victory: 41 votes), #2 Bon Iver and #3 Pearl Jam were upset by #15 Sum 41 and #14 Five Finger Death Punch, respectively, and #4 U2 were shown the door by #13 Modest Mouse (again … no one is safe). MMM powerhouses My Chemical Romance bucked the trend by blowing out #12 Death Cab for Cutie, though #6 Kid Rock got knocked off by #11 Chevelle in a close contest. Seventh-seeded Metallica outlasted a game Guns N’ Roses, but #8 Nickelback were edged out by #9 Rise Against! in a total barn-burner. And after all of that, there’s still plenty left to be decided. Here’s a look at our second-round matchups: #9 Rise Against! vs. #16 AWOLNATION #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #13 Modest Mouse #11 Chevelle vs. #14 Five Finger Death Punch #7 Metallica vs. #15 Sum 41 West More carnage in the West, as the top-seeded Foos got whooped by #16 James Durbin, #2 the Red Hot Chili Peppers went up in smoke against #15 Panic! at the Disco and #4 Maroon 5 got bounced by the late-surging Lana Del Rey. But in an epic battle, #1 Blink-182 was overpowered by #14 Korn (after more than 200,000 votes, they won by less than 800) and defending MMM champs Green Day showed true mettle by mauling #12 the Decemberists. Sixth-seeded Foster the People got bumped by #11 Adam Lambert, and #7 Van Halen were shown the door by #10 No Doubt. And look out for #8 Best Coast, who showed a surprising amount of power by blasting #9 Skrillex. Here’s who’s still left standing heading into round number two: #8 Best Coast vs. #16 James Durbin #5 Green Day vs. #12 Lana Del Rey #3 Blink-182 vs. #11 Adam Lambert #13 No Doubt vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco East Not nearly as brutal here, as #1 Mumford & Sons got waxed by #16 F—ed Up, while #2 Coldplay used a late rally to edge out #15 Arctic Monkeys, third-seeded Florence and the Machine survived #14 Refused and #4 Muse managed to move on after pasting #13 Gym Class Heroes. In a hotly debated (and borderline illegal ) showdown, #5 Arcade Fire were bested by #12 Tokio Hotel (there were 2.1 million votes cast in this one alone) and #6 Fun. fell to the mighty fanbase of #11 Semi Precious Weapons. Not surprisingly, #7 the Shins got smoked by #10 Coheed and Cambria, and #8 Radiohead withstood a late charge from #9 Bruce Springsteen to move on. So after all that carnage, here’s a look at our second-round matchups: #8 Radiohead vs. #16 F—ed Up #4 Muse vs. #12 Tokio Hotel #3 Florence and the Machine vs. #11 Semi Precious Weapons #2 Coldplay vs. #10 Coheed and Cambria Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! South Say hello to the only #1 seed still standing: Evanescence, who dispatched of #16 the Alabama Shakes with shocking ease. Second-seeded Paramore throttled a ( fundamentally sound ) #15 Gotye, while #3 Kings of Leon continued their trend of MMM sucktitude by getting blasted by #14 Phoenix. Fourth seed Jack White did his part by beating back #13 Shinedown, and #5 Linkin Park survived #13 At the Drive-In. The always-dangerous 30 Seconds to Mars thumped #11 Sleigh Bells, but #7 Cage the Elephant fell victim to #10 Ke$ha and her epically toned pelvic muscles . And in a battle true to their late-rising fanbases,#9 Dave Matthews Band rode one final surge of voting to overcome #9 My Morning Jacket. Don’t get too excited just yet, DMB fans, because Evanescence is next. Here’s a look at our round-two tilts in the South: #1 Evanescence vs. #9 Dave Matthews Band #4 Jack White vs. #13 At the Drive-In #6 30 Seconds to Mars vs. #14 Phoenix #2 Paramore vs. #10 Ke$ha So, with one week in the books, 32 teams remain alive. But just who will reign supreme? Well, that’s all up to you: Voting is now live in all second-round matchups … so get cracking. MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament heads to the second round beginning Monday (March 19). Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons On Upset Alert In Musical March Madness

With first-round voting open until Sunday at midnight, a host of MMM favorites appear headed for an early exit … unless you vote them through. By James Montgomery Marcus Mumford Photo: Getty Images It’s been a wild opening week in the 2012 Musical March Madness tournament, with plenty of potential upsets in the works and even more allegations of voter fraud levied by angry Tokio Hotel fans (a yearly MMM tradition!) And while there’s still time to vote in all first-round matchups — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — as the week wraps up, we figured it was a good time to recap all the action: the shocking results, the 4chan-inspired chicanery and all the fierce, fan-driven mania that makes Musical March Madness tick. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! But first, let’s address the allegations lobbed by Tokio Hotel’s fervent fanbase. After jumping out to a huge lead over fifth-seeded Arcade Fire in their first-round matchup (something like 140,000 votes), TH’s supporters watched in abject horror as the Fire quickly closed the gap and eventually took the lead. Gains of this size don’t happen every day, so we started getting a lot of feedback from Tokio fans, most claiming that there was something fishy happening with the votes (of course, others just said we were part of a massive conspiracy against their beloved Kaulitz brothers). Since the integrity of MMM is our top priority, we investigated, and it turns out those fans were right. It seems some overzealous, web-savvy fans were helping swing things in Arcade Fire’s favor, writing scripts that repeatedly voted for AF … and we mean repeatedly (like 90,000 times each). And while that level of cheating was definitely inspired, well, it’s still cheating, so we scrubbed all the votes in question, and returned Tokio Hotel to their rightful lead. They’re up by some 200,000 votes at the moment, and appear a lock to advance to the second round. We’ll be monitoring things much closer from here on out, but, for the moment, all is right with the world. And please, let’s keep it clean, folks. Cheaters never win. Of course, there are still plenty of other eye-opening (and legitimate) results to discuss as the first round wraps up, perhaps none more shocking than the upset brewing in the East region, where top-seeded Mumford & Sons are on the verge of getting booted from the tourney by Canadian crushers F—ed Up (we see you, Damian!) Right now, it’s the underdogs in the lead by nearly 11,000 votes, and we’ll be watching to see if they can hold on to the lead. Mumford fans, you’ve got your work cut out for you if you want to keep your favorite band in the tourney, so get cracking. Things are looking equally grim for the West’s #1 seed, the Foo Fighters, who are getting absolutely blasted by #16 James Durbin. The “American Idol” bandanna enthusiast surged to the lead early in the week, and has yet to wilt beneath the Foos’ full-court press. Can he keep it up through Sunday? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it appears like Durbin may be bound for round two. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And while both of those matchups are verging on blowouts, others are too close to call, and probably will remain that way until the last vote is counted. The West’s #3 seed, Blink-182, are getting all they can handle from #14 Korn, and the East’s #3, Florence and the Machine, are on the brink of getting booted by reunited Swedish vets Refused, who hold a slim (like 2,000 votes) lead. Also in the East, #6 Fun. fell behind #11 Semi Precious Weapons early, but have rallied, and now lead by roughly 1,000 votes. Oh, and there’s quite a battle brewing between Maroon 5 and upset-minded Lana Del Rey, who have been locked in a fierce back-and-forth all week. Right now, it’s Del Rey by less than 2,000 votes. Can she shock the world? We’ll be watching closely. And speaking of shocking the world, there’s a potential game-changer taking place in the East’s Coldplay/Arctic Monkeys tilt, where the Monkeys lead Chris Martin and company by just 200 votes. These two have been going back and forth all week, and this one seems destined to go down to the wire. And that’s fitting … like we said, it’s been a wild ride already. Is your favorite band on the ropes? Get voting. And check back Monday, when we reveal the 32 bands that will move one step closer to hoisting the big gold trophy on April 3. MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is under way! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. Gotye Getting Back To Fundamentals For Musical March Madness

Can the up-and-coming singer shock the world and win MMM? We’ll find out when the tournament tips off Monday. By James Montgomery Gotye Photo: MTV News / Getty Images Gotye has already made huge strides in the U.S. thanks to the crossover success of his hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” but now he’s looking to truly cement his status as a Stateside sensation … by winning MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. The third-annual MMM tips off Monday, and if the Belgian-born, Australian-bred singer/songwriter is really going to best 63 other acts — including defending champs Green Day, heavyweights like the Black Keys and Ke$ha , and up-and-comers Fun. — to hoist the big gold trophy, well, he’s definitely got his work cut out for him. So it’s a good thing that he’s been working hard on the fundamentals … like the art of the well-placed screen. “To win, it’s going to be all about screening. Screening is the key, people,” he explained. “A lot of people in bands don’t realize what it’s all about, but you’ve got to screen people, to keep your vocalists at center. It’s all about focus and screening, back and forth, not a lot of people know that.” Ah, the screen: Catalyst behind the pick-and-roll … the old “picket fence” play … basketball building blocks, people. It’s the same time-honored skill Roger Waters used to take home the 1973 Musical March Madness tourney (note: not actually true), and one that Gotye hopes to employ to maximum success in this year’s big dance. “Roger Waters and his ‘walls,’ he set a lot of hard screens with lots of blocks,” he laughed. “If you’ve got a 10-piece band, keep your main player away from the play, and then at the right moment, just screen the whole audience away, so just one person gets that special look. That’s what it’s all about.” Actually, winning is what it’s all about. Can Gotye shock the world and reign supreme in MMM 2012? We’ll just have to see when the tournament gets under way on Monday! MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament begins on Monday, March 12, when we’ll unveil the full field of 64 bands that will battle for this year’s championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM … but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Artists Gotye

Yes, They’re Really Going to Make an Animal House Musical

When we think of the 1978 skinema classic Animal House , a few things come to mind: Jack Daniels, toga parties, and Mary-Louise Weller’ s boobs (ok, mostly just Mary-Louise Weller’s boobs). And when we think of Broadway, it brings to mind exactly…none of those things. Nevertheless, Universal Stage Productions is going full steam ahead on the unlikeliest entertainment hybrid since Pride and Predator : Animal House: The Musical . The AP reports: “Animal House: The Musical” will feature an original score by the band Barenaked Ladies … The 1978 film’s cast included John Belushi, Tom Hulce, Bruce McGill, Tim Matheson, Stephen Furst and Karen Allen. It explored how one frat house, Delta Tau Chi, made sloth and debauchery look cool.” Less Barenaked Ladies and more real naked ladies, please. With ticket prices sure to go into the $100+ range, there better be something to see that you can’t get on the Blu-ray (or here at Mr. Skin ). And we don’t mean Bluto tripping the light fantastic.
