‘American Idol’ Wannabes Line Up In Nashville

Around 10,000 hopefuls show up for first audition of 10th season, producer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Photo: FOX As “American Idol” heads into its 10th season, legions of wannabe pop stars have descended on Nashville for a shot at overnight fame. “Idol” supervising producer Patrick Lynn told The Associated Press that around 10,000 people braved the sweltering heat to line up for wristbands Thursday morning (July 15), days before auditions kick off Saturday at the city’s Bridgestone Arena . (According to the show’s website, “Idol” wannabes are not allowed to camp out and must return Saturday with their wristbands.) In addition to the show’s track record for producing pop megastars, there might be an increase of hopefuls for the upcoming season due to the show’s recent change in eligibility guidelines. An “Idol” producer announced in June that the minimum age for contestants had been lowered from 16 to 15 . “A lot of young, talented people are now seeking careers and representation before they turn 16,” “American Idol” Executive Producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said in a statement at the time. “Lowering the age limit allows us to tap into this talent pool.” Lynn conceded that the breakout success of teen phenom Justin Bieber was a factor in the change. The show is also soldiering along without caustic judge Simon Cowell but has yet to announce a replacement. The AP reports that some “Idol” auditioners in Nashville were disappointed that they wouldn’t be subjected to Cowell’s no-nonsense critique, while others were grateful they wouldn’t have to perform for him on the upcoming season. In addition to the show’s current judges — Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres — several celebrities have appeared as guest judges in recent years, including Mary J. Blige and Joe Jonas. The show will head around the country to find the next Idol, and upcoming auditions will take place in several cities, including New Orleans, Austin and San Francisco. Will you miss Simon at the judges’ table? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Taylor Swift Talks Nashville Flood Benefit With Miley Cyrus

‘Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful,’ Swift tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News On Tuesday night (June 22), Taylor Swift will be one of the many Nashville superstars on hand for Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery . The singer, who lives in the area, will join the night’s hosts, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill , as they raise money to help the area devastated by floods earlier this spring. Swift said she and her band weren’t immune to the destruction. “The flood definitely affected all of Nashville. You know, for me, the fact that there were members of my band that lost their homes really affected me, because those are my friends,” she told MTV News. “Those are the people I call up as soon as we get home. The fact that it affected my band, that’s the most directly it affected me.” While some of her bandmates have struggled to get their feet back on the ground, Swift said, “Thankfully, my home wasn’t damaged, but seeing people that I’ve known for years trying to figure out where they’re going to stay, it was really painful to watch. Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful.” Swift, who donated $500,000 to help the area back in May, will be joined by fellow teen queen Miley Cyrus , who had her big Can’t Be Tamed coming-out party Monday night, as well as country stars like Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride. The show is set to take place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Funds will go to the Community Foundation, which provides philanthropic services in Middle Tennessee. Bachmann: Obama Oil Spill Response ‘Dereliction of Leadership’; Media Lowered President’s ‘Level of Accountability’

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann isn’t exactly known for her reticence on the news of the day. And when it comes to the White House’s handling of the BP oil spill disaster, Bachmann had some harsh words for President Barack Obama. Speaking at the June 25 Bloggers Briefing at the Heritage Foundation , Bachmann pointed out how she thought it was peculiar that all the comments coming out of the White House were geared toward the president specifically and not to the victims of this crisis. “The thing that we’re all focusing on today will be the president’s remarks that he’ll be giving tonight and it looks like an absolute opportunism moment for the president to try and advance the next stage of his legislative agenda,” Bachmann said. “And I think the curious feature in all of this has been: this is a major disaster and yet it seems like every response that has been coming out of the White House has been about the president rather than about the disaster. That is odd to me. That seems extremely odd.” The Minnesota Republican said the hapless reaction to the oil spill event and the administration’s mishandling of the Nashville flood in April that went largely ignored by the President and the media raised questions about the administration’s leadership. “It seems like a dereliction of leadership, especially when you consider what happened in Nashville was also a disaster – an unmitigated disaster for the people down in Nashville,” she said. “Not only has the president not yet visited to highlight the devastation that has happened to businesses and people’s lives there, but he also hasn’t even mentioned Nashville as a disaster. That’s interesting to me, how the White House seems to be picking and choosing between disasters – for whatever reason and I can’t speculate what that reason may be, but for some reason Nashville didn’t make the cut for a presidential visit or a presidential mention.” When asked, Bachmann didn’t sound too hopeful that Congress would exercise its oversight role and hold hearing looking into what she suggested was the federal government’s mishandling of the oil spill response efforts. “I am sure Nancy Pelosi will get on that tomorrow morning and Harry Reid,” she said, to laughter. She characterized the ongoing Gulf disaster as a missed opportunity for the president to untie the country, something that “candidate Obama” seemingly could have done, as opposed to President Obama. “I give the President a lot of credit as candidate Obama,” she continued. “He really did have kind of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be that transformational president, which I wish he could have been. But unfortunately the last 18 months I think we have seen the ground shake underneath our country because of a lot of policy decisions he’s made but also from a stylistic point of view – the way that he has handled various crises in his presidency – and I don’t think that has engendered confidence.” She also mentioned the White House’s handling of  last month’s flotilla disaster, and she took a shot at the media for not holding Obama as accountable as they held the Bush administration for similar responses. “Look at the blockade situation with Turkey and with Israel,” Bachmann said. “All the wrong signals were sent out of that event in my opinion. And it’s made Israel even more vulnerable than they were before. So for that and a lot of other reasons, I think we really need to give – the White House needs to be held at least to the same level of accountability the previous administration was held to. And I don’t see that media, present company excluded, has necessarily done that.”

Bonnaroo-Bound Alice + Olivia Tour Helps Women Affected By Flooding, Oil Spill

Designer Stacey Bendet and crew will provide makeovers to women across the country, including Nashville and the Gulf Coast. By Akshay Bhansali Alice + Olivia crew in front of the Airstream Trailer Photo: MTV News In eight years, the quirky, perky Stacey Bendet (or “Staceypants” as her friends love to call her) has gone from being homeless and making single pairs of pants for admirers to founding the celeb-adored Alice + Olivia fashion brand. Her women’s, children’s and upcoming shoe (2011) lines have brought smiles to the faces of women for almost a decade now, including folks like Taylor Swift, Blake Lively and Angelina Jolie. And now MTV News has learned that her undeniable ability to spread joy has Bendet and an eclectic band of artist gal-pals hopping into a retrofitted Alice + Olivia Airstream Trailer and taking their act on the road. “We are going on a tour all through the Southeast, starting at Bonnaroo ,” Bendet said. “And we are making people over in every city as we go. We thought it would be a great way to work with all the stores and shops we’ve worked with since we started. So we are doing pop-up shops, trunk shows and makeovers.” What makes this tour particularly interesting is that in addition to making over everyday women across the country, Bendet and Co. will be hitting cities in Tennessee and on the Gulf Coast, taking time specifically to attend to women affected by recent flooding as well as the notorious Gulf oil spill. “[From] Bonnaroo, Knoxville, Nashville, and small towns in Alabama we are getting submissions from people that lost their wardrobe in the flood, or [are] going through a really rough time. In Nashville obviously we are focusing on flood victims. People who have lost all of their belongings. Their whole wardrobe. We are going to a beach town in Alabama that’s been really affected by the oil spills. We are doing a big block party there right by the beach and we are also doing a couple of makeovers. Then in Miami we are doing a fashion show at the Fountainbleau, but we are making over someone from the Kristi House there. So we are just trying to bring a little happiness into people’s lives in cities across the country. It’s kind of like making over America a little bit.” To send off the traveling troupe of women (stylist Cleo Wade, DJs Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe, photographer Diggy Lloyd, and friend Molly Austin), former electronic-music icon and friend Moby came out to wish them well, and even christened the voyage with an expansive drawing on the interior wall of the Airstream. “I met Stacy when she was homeless living behind a dumpster at Arby’s just by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in New Jersey,” Moby said. “Then she started a delivery service where she would deliver things all over New York on her Rollerblades. And she made her own pants and at some point someone said, ‘Hey those are nice pants. Can you make me some pants?’ And so she started making pants for other people. And now she’s the proud owner of an Airstream trailer!” Bendet’s Alice + Olivia Tour kicks off at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, on June 10 and will end in Montauk, New York, on July 11, with stops in Orange Beach, Alabama; Wilmington, North Carolina; and Miami, among other cities.
