CC Sabathia Remembers An Epic Paint Fight On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,’ the Yankees pitcher recalls. By James Montgomery CC Sabathia Photo: MTV News Back before he was throwing heat for the New York Yankees, CC Sabathia was throwing paint in the classrooms of Vallejo High School in California. And, as he explains on Saturday’s all-new episode of “When I Was 17,” he was just as good at it as he is at baseball. “I remember one time in my junior year, in my art class, our teacher had us doing, like, finger paints, and I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,” he laughed. “Paint all over the walls, all over everybody. It was pretty fun. “The teacher was this short little lady, and she was screaming, ‘You guys, stop!’ and we kind of drowned her out,” Sabathia continued. “I did a lot of bad stuff, I guess.” But, luckily, it didn’t get much worse than flinging paint. Because back then, Sabathia — who stood 6-foot-6 and weighed 235 pounds and starred at not only baseball, but football and basketball too — could’ve done some serious damage. That wasn’t really in his nature, though, and pretty much everyone who knew him back at Vallejo High remembers him as “a big teddy bear.” Of course, there was another reason he never really misbehaved: his mother, Margie, who was waiting at home every day and was more than willing to keep CC in line. And, thankfully for him, she didn’t hear about the whole paint-fight incident until producers brought it up on “When I Was 17.” “Oh, man, I didn’t hear about that one,” she smiled. “See, there’s some things they keep from you!” Sorry, CC, hope we didn’t get you in too much trouble. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring CC, Ciara and Debi Nova — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Proof, Blacks Make Better Runners Than Whites. But Whites Are Better Swimmers According to Duke University Study

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Scientists have found the reason why blacks dominate on the running track and whites in the swimming pool: it's in their belly-buttons, a study published Monday shows. What's important is not whether an athlete has an innie or an outie but where his or her navel is in relation to the rest of the body, says the study published in the International Journal of Design and Nature and Ecodynamics. The navel is the center of gravity of the body, and given two runners or swimmers of the same height, one black and one white, “what matters is not total height but the position of the belly-button, or center of gravity,” Duke University professor Andre Bejan, the lead author of the study, told AFP. “It so happens that in the architecture of the human body of West African-origin runners, the center of gravity is significantly higher than in runners of European origin,” which puts them at an advantage in sprints on the track, he said. Individuals of West African-origin have longer legs than European-origin athletes, which means their belly-buttons are three centimeters (1.18 inches) higher than whites', said Bejan. That means the black athletes have a “hidden height” that is three percent greater than whites', which gives them a significant speed advantage on the track. “Locomotion is essentially a continual process of falling forward, and mass that falls from a higher altitude, falls faster,” Bejan explained. In the pool, meanwhile, whites have the advantage because they have longer torsos, making their belly-buttons lower in the general scheme of body architecture. “Swimming is the art of surfing the wave created by the swimmer,” said Bejan. “The swimmer who makes the bigger wave is the faster swimmer, and a longer torso makes a bigger wave. Europeans have a three-percent longer torso than West Africans, which gives them a 1.5-percent speed advantage in the pool,” he said. Asians have the same long torsos as Europeans, giving them the same potential to be record-breakers in the pool. But they often lose out to whites because whites are taller, said Bejan. Many scientists have avoided studying why blacks make better sprinters and whites better swimmers because of what the study calls the “obvious” race angle. But Bejan said the study he conducted with Edward Jones, a professor at Howard University in Washington, and Duke graduate Jordan Charles, focused on the athletes' geographic origins and biology, not race, which the authors of the study call a “social construct.” Bejan is white, originally from Romania, and Jones is black, from South Carolina. They charted and analyzed nearly 100 years of records in men's and women's sprinting and 100-meters freestyle swimming for the study. added by: congoboy

NASA Witnesses Greenland Glacier Breakup, Retreat One Mile Overnight

image: NASA NASA ‘s just released so pretty dramatic satellite photos of the north branch of Greenland’s Jakobshavn glacier from July 6 and 7–when an area of ice 7 square kilometers in size (that’s more than twice the size of New York City’s Central Park), where the glacier meets the ocean, broke up over one night and the glacier retreated 1.5 kilometers inland. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mark Moffett, Adventures Among Ants

Alas, most of us have lost touch with the insect friends of our childhood. Mark Moffett is one of the world’s leading explorers and a biologist with an acute ant fixation (he did, afterall, get his PhD under E. O. Wilson , the grandaddy of ant scientists). Moffett’s articles and remarkable photographs appear regularly in

Southern California’s Mountain Lions Become International Diplomats

Photo via angel_malachite A decade-long study of Southern California mountain lions by The Nature Conservancy has yielded a new first. A young lion that goes by the handle M53 found a way to cross a human-made barrier that could have international consequences. When M53 managed to successfully cross the US-Mexico boarder, he inadvertently became somewhat of a diplomat for other lions, and is helping scientists at The Nature Conservancy protect the wildlife corridors the animals need to survive. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

From BT cotton to GM salmon: Unnatural Selection

This stunning European documentary available for the first time in the US reveals the consequences of GMOs worldwide from BT cotton, BT canola, GM pigs, to GM salmon, which threatens natural species in the wild. It shows how unnecessary and profit driven this technology is, and how it is interfering in the natural processes of this planet. When you play master of the universe without respect for the nature you are interfering in, the end result cannot be good. added by: JanforGore

Green Movement Calls Fireworks ‘Eco-Hazards,’ Sues to Ban July 4th Display in California

Apparently the “rockets’ red glare” isn’t “green” enough for some environmentalists. Fourth of July fireworks displays have been deemed “ecologically hazardous” by some eco-warriors, who are urging environmentally-conscious Americans to shun the tradition. [F]ireworks shows spray out a toxic concoction that rains down quietly into lakes, rivers and bays throughout the country,” wrote the Mother Nature Network’s Russell McLendon on June 30. “Many of the chemicals in fireworks are also persistent in the environment, meaning they stubbornly sit there instead of breaking down.” McLendon suggested avoiding fireworks and finding other ways to celebrate Independence Day. “The most eco-friendly alternative to fireworks is to forgo explosions altogether – go to a parade, go fishing, grill out, or help out,” he wrote. According to the writer, those stubborn traditionalists who insist on seeing “the sky festively illuminated” can always “try a laser light show” – which McLendon says is the eco-friendly – albeit, lame – way to celebrate the Fourth. The Mother Nature Network is an environmental news service that covers “the broadest scope of environmental and social responsibility issues on the internet.” It was founded in 2008 by Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell. Its advisory board includes former Weather Channel star Heidi Cullen and Barbara Pyle, the co-creator and producer of the eco-cartoon ” Captain Planet and the Planeteers.” But while McLendon’s Mother Nature article simply recommends that people opt out of fireworks celebrations, one environmental group in California is taking a more heavy-handed approach. The Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation is suing the city of La Jolla, CA to stop its fireworks display, claiming that the Independence Day tradition is perilous to the area’s sensitive maritime resources. “The entire shoreline in La Jolla per the La Jolla community plan is a sensitive resource. It’s highly protected,” Marco Gonzalez, an attorney for the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, told News10. Gonzalez’s group launched its suit against the city on June 25. According to the organization’s lawsuit, the city of La Jolla did not apply for a Coastal Development permit or comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, two steps the group says are legally necessary before the city can host a fireworks display. The foundation also alleged that the ecological impacts of the Fourth of July show, including traffic and the pollutants from firework debris entering the region’s coastal resources, have not been considered in an environmental review. The environmental group’s suit will be heard on Wednesday, but another organization called the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation says it is battling to keep the annual city fireworks show going forward. “The 4th of July celebrates our country’s freedoms, and we intend to vigorously defend those freedoms here,” said the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation on its website. The Fireworks advocacy group insisted that the show will go on, in spite of the lawsuit. “The City of San Diego has issued us the necessary permits to continue the fireworks display and we intend to continue with the event,” said the statement on the organization’s website. Fireworks displays are just the latest great American tradition to get caught in the cross-hairs of the environmental “green” movement, joining the long-despised hamburgers , SUVs , and indoor air conditioning .

Miles attempting another comeback (AP)

On the same day as Game 7 of the NBA finals, Darius Miles is running the floor alongside several players who have never been in the NBA and perhaps never will. It was hardly the place for a former No. 3 overall pick in the draft. But following what was once called a “career-ending” knee injury and off-court problems, Miles is determined to overcome the rustiness and his balky knee to play…
