White Supremacist Blows Off His Own Leg While Making Bombs An upstate New York man who blew his leg off in his garage making improvised explosive devices will be held in federal custody without bail because law enforcement found white supremacist paraphernalia and believe he’s dangerous. Via Raw Story : Michael O’Neill, 45, a former Niagara County corrections officer, is accused of making seven bombs and was arrested two weeks ago after one of the devices accidentally went off. O’Neill was rushed to a hospital where his leg had to be amputated. He was the only one injured, WGRZ reports. “Luckily, he is detained,” Assistant U.S. Attorney John Alsup told Time Warner Cable News. “He is no longer at large in the community with or without some of the physical disabilities he’s going to have going forward, but luckily for the community, he only hurt himself.” Pictures of the KKK, Nazi imagery and the Confederate flag were found inside his home, which he lives in with his stepfather, William Ross, who chairs the Niagara County Legislature, WGRZ reports. Even with his leg now missing, prosecutors believed it would be too risky for the public if O’Neill was released from custody. The explosives he created contained nails and BB pellets, according to reports. One was labeled “powder with nails.” His attorney said O’Neill was just planning to blow up some tree stumps. “The fact that there were some items that we described in court as consistent with, white supremacists, to include the Ku Klux Klan, and the Nazi imagery, some of the verbiage which was particularly on the Nazi picture, also the Confederate battle flag, means that law enforcement has more work to go,” U.S. Attorney William Hochul told TWC News. O’Neill will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshalls while he recuperates, then will be transferred to a detention facility. After the explosion, a neighbor told local WKBW that O’Neill spend hours on end “We only know that we see him at night, in the middle of the night, all hours of the night, all seasons, just out in the garage, out in the back yard,” the neighbor told the station. An amusing-looking (and harmless) independent film called Iron Sky is hoping to make some noise at Comic-Con. The noise they’ve picked is that of goose-stepping — a publicity march of hot women dressed as pseudo-Nazis marching around the convention this Saturday. And you can hashtag your pics, too! Iron Sky is a Grindhouse -y tale about Nazi descendents (led by Udo Keir!) living on the far side of the Moon , poised to invade Sarah Palin’s America. Comparing someone or something you don't like to Nazism is usually a sign that you have run out of logical arguments against them. But in Beck's case he has skipped logical arguments all toghether. Labeling any non-Repuplican Person, Place or Thing as Nazi/Communist. This is starting to look like a pattern. First Mark Kirk, now Jan Brewer. Governor Brewer's effort to stir sympathy for her cause seems to have backfired on her. Gov. Jan Brewer said in a recent interview that her father died fighting Nazis in Germany. In fact, the death of Wilford Drinkwine came 10 years after World War II had ended. During the war, Drinkwine worked as a civilian supervisor for a naval munitions depot in Hawthorne, Nev. He died of lung disease in 1955 in California. Brewer made the comment to The Arizona Republic while talking about the criticism she has taken since signing SB 1070, the new immigration law that makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. “Knowing that my father died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany, that I lost him when I was 11 because of that… and then to have them call me Hitler's daughter. It hurts. It's ugliness beyond anything I've ever experienced,” Brewer said in the story, published Tuesday. How exactly does one stretch work for a munitions depot stateside into “fighting the Nazis”? Evidently by making the claim that the lung disease that killed her father was caused by toxic fumes at the munitions factory. Her claim that she didn't mean to embellish the story rings hollow to me. The phrase “my father died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany…” clearly intends to convey the impression that he fell in combat in Germany fighting Nazis. If she had intended to convey otherwise, she would have framed it as the result of the country's war with Nazi Germany. She did not. Of course, she is now trying to spin as a simple misinterpretation on the part of the reader, which points directly to my overall problem with the faux patriotism candidates put on under the guise of military service. We live in a country where service is voluntary (despite our unenforced draft laws). Serving or not serving is not a benchmark measure of anyone's patriotism. As far as I'm concerned, military service should not be a marker of a candidate's qualification to run for or hold office. When it starts being pimped as some kind of extra qualifier, or when candidates use their family's service as a qualifier (as Brewer did), it's an insult to every member who is or has served in the military today. Brewer just keeps proving her ambition and lack of qualification for office.
