Kevin Durant Opens Facility In Maryland To Help Kids Through College

Here is the original post:

Source: The Washington Post / Getty Kevin Durant is, without doubt, one of the NBA’s most electrifying players and a solid cog in the high-powered Golden State Warriors offense. But like other youth from his home state of Maryland, Durant wasn’t gifted with endless riches to go to the next level scholastically and now, he’s using his platform to assist others with that journey via the new Durant Center facility in Prince George’s County.  The Washington Post writes : About two years ago, Durant was looking for ways to widen his philanthropic portfolio. He had, a year earlier, signed a two-year contract with Golden State worth about $54 million. His foundation had overseen the construction of parks and basketball courts throughout the United States, including some in the Washington area. But now he wanted something more far-reaching, so he attended a conference for start-up companies and met representatives for College Track, a company that uses a 10-year plan to shepherd students from their early teenage years through college graduation. Before long, Durant found himself visiting a center in Oakland, Calif., discussing how to bring something like that to Washington while paying attention to that facility’s students. “He was interested in understanding their journey and what types of services we provided that really change their trajectory,” said Elissa Salas, College Track’s chief executive. The organization, whose collaboration with Durant would lead to its first site on the East Coast, considered property in the District — Salas said a second College Track location will open this autumn in Congress Heights in Southeast D.C. and a third is in the early planning stages — but that Durant was adamant Prince George’s County seemed right. Despite Being A Sexual Assault Victim, Lil’ Mo Is Still Defending R. Kelly: ‘I’m Not Muting Sh*t’

Originally posted here:

Source: Santiago Felipe / Getty Lil’ Mo is a sexual assault victim who doesn’t believe other sexual assault victims. Mo vehemently defended R. Kelly and condemned the parents of the teenage girls who were victims of his perversions on a recent appearance on “The Breakfast Club.” MUST READ: Lil Mo Defends Fab: I’ll Olivia Pope This Whole Situation Before I Let Somebody Take My Brother Down’ After admitting she was molested by a member of her church and that she didn’t tell her parents until she confessed it on R&B Divas at a late age, Mo, baffled by the idea of the victims not coming out, denounced the victims with the asinine comment, “Why now?” “Who raised the people?” she continued. According to Lil’ Mo, her father raised her to be aware, which, in addition to the sexual assault incident in her youth, made her an overprotective parent. Yet still, it happened to her. But perhaps that hasn’t clicked in Mo’s mind because she questioned why the victims took so long to come forward. She even acknowledged women feel “like we’re lesser.” And when she vehemently defended R. Kelly, Charlamagne interjected to add, “you can’t blame parents for the actions of a grown a** man.” Nonetheless, she proclaimed, she isn’t muting sh*t. Mo’s stance isn’t surprising. After all, she defended her former collaborator Fabolous after video of the rapper verbally assaulting his longtime lover Emily B and her father surfaced on the Internet. “One thing I refuse to allow this industry or for anybody to do is to taint his legacy,” she said. “At the end of the day I’m not going to let nobody go out as an abuser and as a..whatever they’re calling him. I’m not letting it happen. You have to protect the king.” Pretty much, Lil’ Mo is out here caping for “kings” at the expense of women and herself as she broke down moments later discussing how loyal she is to her loved ones, who aren’t as loyal to her. Lil’ Mo isn’t alone. This week, Erykah Badu and Taraji P. Henson both made troubling statements that laddered up to the support of a monster. Similar to Mo’s sentiments–Erykah Badu blatantly admitted that she still loves R. Kelly and will continue to pray for him. This is also the same woman who tweeted in 2016, “Young Girls need to wear longer skirts to fight against natural male teacher attraction.” There’s a generational divide between millennial women and our proverbial aunties. Women once found strength in how much they could take whereas younger women refuse to take all society, particularly men, has to throw at them. In the Black community, it seems holding men accountable takes a backseat to placing the onus on young girls. Whereas young White girl victims are allowed to be innocent, young Black victims are seen as “fast” or “fresh.” Particularly perplexing with Lil’ Mo is that she is a victim but won’t acknowledge the victim in others. That she can’t understand why someone dealing with the shame of sexual assault, abuse would not immediately come out. That she questioned the parents before denouncing the man behind the horrors. Black women have to do better. Defending a man isn’t more important that defending our own. RELATED STORIES: Erykah Badu Tries To Clarify Her R. The WIZRD: Future Says Ciara ‘Controlled’ Russell Wilson Should ‘Be A Man’ & Do THIS

Source: Paras Griffin/JRP/WENN / Getty Here we go again… Future Talks His New “The WIZRD” Album, Says Russell Wilson’s Controlled By Ciara If you thought Future was done talking Ciara and Russell Wilson —you thought wrong. Future just dropped his “The WIZRD” album and as part of the rollout, he stopped by  Beats 1 on Apple Music . While there for FreeBandz Radio he spoke to Big Bank Black about a number of traptastic things; his new project, his rise to stardom and even that time he gave rapper YC the track “Racks” purposely, to jumpstart his own career. Things got especially interesting however when Future was asked to speak on his ex and her Seattle Seahawks husband.  According to the Astronaut rapper, he has “no feelings” for Russell because he’s “controlled by Ciara.” According to Future, Russell should step up and be a “man” and tell Ciara to stop mentioning his name in public. “He do exactly what she tell him to do! II feel like he not being a man in that position,” said Future. “He not tellin’ her, ‘Chill out with that on the internet. Don’t even talk to him. I’m your husband! You better not even bring Future’s name up!’ If that was me, she couldn’t even bring his name up,” he added. “She know that. She couldn’t even bring her exes’ names up. I don’t care what they gave you […] Don’t bring their names up in an interview, no! Don’t give that s**t no energy. It’s about me! I’m taking care of everything!”   Future also added that he thinks Russell should’ve stopped Ciara from taking him to court and revealed that he declined Ciara’s invitation to meet him.  “He think ‘oh you should go to court’—no! You better not show up for court. ‘I’ll take care of him before you sue him.’ […] “You’d already started going around my kid when y’all started going together and you haven’t even talked to me,” said Future. “And y’all got married and she said ‘Oh I want you to meet Russell.’ Why would I want to meet him now?! Y’all already did the damage!” “I’m not trying to be around your kids and I don’t know their baby daddy,” he aded. […] “Because he have a daddy, not only do he have a daddy, his daddy is in the public.” Well, well, well. Someone’s still clearly a little salty… He did say however that he thinks it’s a positive thing for little Future to be around a top NFL player because his son is being coached by one of the best in the business. “I played football, basketball, and baseball,” said Future. […] “He talented. Why wouldn’t I want a championship player coaching my son? I want the best for my son. […] You the best in the world, why wouldn’t I want you coaching my son? It’s a coach, he coaching him, I don’t think of it as a negative situation. […] Why would I want to take that away from him?” Does Future have a point or is he in his Dirty Sprite splattered feelings??? Associated Press Names LeBron James Male Athlete Of The Year

N BA star LeBron James has made major strides both on and off the court in 2018. Not only did we watch James lead his former team the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA finals, but we’ve also witnessed him evolve into a fierce advocate for social justice. His accomplishments this year garnered him The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year Award, ESPN reported. LeBron James named AP male athlete of the year for third time pic.twitter.com/7lEdZKYyW6 — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) December 27, 2018 This is the third time that James has received the award, the news outlet writes. He was selected by U.S. editors and news directors. Aside from having a strong presence on the court where he averaged just shy of 30 points per game, he continuously used his platform to spread awareness about social issues and bring important conversations surrounding race in America to the forefront. He produced a powerful documentary dubbed Shut Up and Dribble that explored the history of Black athletes who have been outspoken about social and political issues. He created an unscripted series called The Shop that featured candid conversations with celebrities about culturally relevant topics. One of his biggest accomplishments this year was opening up the I Promise School for youth in his hometown of Akron.  He joins a list of influential athletes—including Michael Jordan , Lance Armstrong , and Tiger Woods —who have all received the award at least three times. “In addition to being on everyone’s short list as one of the league’s all-time greatest players, LeBron is among the hardest-working players and is a thoughtful and impactful leader,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver told the news outlet. “He serves on the executive committee of the Players Association even as he builds an impressive media company of his own. And what’s most inspiring, and no surprise given his talent and focus, is how he’s done all of this while embracing his unique opportunity to positively impact communities in need.” James dedicated the award to the I Promise School. “Throughout my journey if I’m able to win anything, my name is getting the award but it’s more than that,” he said in a statement, according to Sports Illustrated . “It’s everybody that I try to inspire. It’s my teammates and it’s my city, where I come from. It’s my kids and my school so it’s never about me.” This accolade comes just weeks after it was announced that James’ Equality Sneakers will be featured in an exhibition at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
