‘You’re Ruining Fuddruckers for Everyone!’: Community Recapped

For the last few weeks , I’ve been one of those reviewers bemoaning the fact that Community doesn’t have any stakes, relatable heroes or weight behind its story arcs. Much of season two has been very funny — not as funny as season one, admittedly, but still very funny — but not much has occurred that is likely to be remembered. Watching season two of Community has been like eating Cap’n Crunch for breakfast: Delightful, a little bit naughty and wholly unsatisfying in the long run. Which is why “Mixology Certification” was actually a welcome departure from the track of the season. It wasn’t funny, but it was certainly meaty.

NBC’s O’Donnell: Palin ‘Rips the Heart Out of Her Opponents’ in New Book

NBC correspondent Norah O'Donnell hyped Sarah Palin's criticism of her liberal opponents on Tuesday's Today show, stating that the former governor ” rips the heart out of some of her opponents ” in her new book. O'Donnell stated that Palin, ” in very personal terms, also questions the President's [Obama's] patriotism, concluding he has 'a stark lack of faith in the American people.' ” The correspondent covered “America By Heart,” the Republican's second book, for the second straight day. Anchor Matt Lauer introduced her report, which began 40 minutes into the 7 pm Eastern hour, by immediately noting Palin's attacks on Mr. Obama: “Sarah Palin's much-anticipated new book hits stores today. NBC News received an advanced copy last night, and the former Alaska governor is not holding back when it comes to President Obama .” O'Donnell picked up where he left off: “Well, you know, her new book is called 'America By Heart.' It's full of what she calls 'reflections on faith, family and flag.' But with all the attacks on President Obama and others, some say it could be a handbook for her for a 2012 campaign .” read more

CNN Misinterprets Pope’s Condom Remarks; NBC Offers Accurate Coverage

On Monday's Newsroom, CNN's Kyra Phillips gave a false impression of Pope Benedict XVI's recent comments about condoms. While the Pope stated that condom use “can be a first step…on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed,” Phillips stated that the pontiff ” says condoms are okay sometimes .” Refreshingly, Monday's Today show on NBC accurately covered Benedict's remarks. The anchor previewed CNN correspondent Atika Schubert's report on the pontiff's comments 10 minutes into the 9 am Eastern hour with her inaccurate description: “Well, the Catholic Church and condoms: two things that have never really gone together until now. The Pope, quoted in a new book, says condoms are okay sometimes. Now, that's a talker! ” After a commercial break, Phillips continued with another misleading statement: PHILLIPS: Pope Benedict is bending a bit when it comes to condoms. A new book actually quotes him as saying that they are okay to use in certain circumstances, like to prevent disease, not birth control. It's the first time the Church has ever talked about exceptions to the condom rule. …Here's a part of what the Pope says in the book. See if your eyebrows raise a little bit. It says- quote, ' There could be single cases that can be justified. For instance, when a prostitute uses a condom .' Say what? (laughs) Doesn't it kind of sound like the Pope is justifying prostitution, too? Surely not, but what a bizarre analogy. read more

David Gregory to Hillary Clinton: Might GOP Hurt U.S. Prestige and Obama on World Stage

David Gregory is clearly concerned that if Republicans don't vote in favor of the START treaty with Russia, President Obama's international image, as well as American prestige abroad, will be damaged. On Sunday's “Meet the Press,” Gregory asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “Is this going to potentially be a problem with the president not being able to get what he wants on the world stage because of Republicans?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Scheduling Apocalypse: Fox Moves American Idol To Wednesday And Thursday

Thursday night is rapidly turning into the network equivalent of the O.K. Corral. First CBS, sensing weakness on the part of NBC’ s comedies, moved The Big Bang Theory and $#*! My Dad Says into the 8 PM berth formerly held by Survivor . NBC responded by doubling-down and expanding their night into a 3 hour comedy behemoth. And now Fox is looking to join the fight. Check out their full, new midseason line-up after the break.

Lauer to Lisa Murkowski: Will You Stand Up to Republicans Who Want Obama to Fail?

NBC's Matt Lauer, on Thursday's Today show, invited on Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski to applaud her presumptive write-in ballot win over Republican candidate Joe Miller and asked if she would now “stand up against” Republicans “who may feel that the only way for them to succeed” is for Barack Obama to fail. After Lauer went through the perfunctory congratulations, he asked the candidate who failed to win her party's own primary, if she would, essentially, become a thorn in the side of Republicans as seen in the following question: MATT LAUER: You, you talk about governance based on anger or fear. You're a moderate Republican. You've said that you do not pass the purity test that the Tea Party has set out. You said something else. You said, said “I will tell you I'm not one of those who wants Obama to fail.” Will you stand up against other Republicans who may feel that the only way for them to succeed is for the President not to succeed? Lauer also made sure to note that since Sarah Palin endorsed Joe Miller, Murkowski's victory could also be seen as a diminishment of the former Alaskan Governor's “prestige” and “power,” as queried: “There are a lot of other people who are saying you defeated Sarah Palin. She backed Mr. Miller in her home state, put the prestige of her power behind that, that endorsement. How much does this say about her power and impact going forward, in your opinion?” (video after the break) read more

Elizabeth Banks on The Next Three Days, Prison Panic and Sympathy for Demi Lovato

Elizabeth Banks is terrified of going to prison. The self described “goody two shoes” knows that anyone is just one little moment away from an event — she cites Brandy’s traffic accident as an example — that can mutate into something far more sinister, changing the course of a person’s life forever.
