Qwikster is Dead; Long Live Netflix?

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings probably wasn’t prepared for the earful (or Internetz-full) he received last month when he announced plans to spin-off Netflix’s DVD rentals into a new company called Qwikster. “It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult,” he wrote in a blog post today. “So we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVD s.” Read on for more flip-flopping, and rejoice?

VIDEO: Funny Or Die Chronicles Netflix Price-Rise Apocalypse

Ever since Netflix upped its mail-delivery DVD prices to the two-digit level , how are you surviving? Or are you? Sorry, that was presumptuous of me. You’ve chosen to die young, and I understand. And so does Funny Or Die, which has put together a video about Netflixpricepocalypse. Jason Alexander stars, and he is concerned about whether your viewings of The Wire are in jeopardy.

‘Trust’ Trailer, Starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener

Original post:

When I first saw the Apple listing for a trailer for Trust, I got excited that Hal Hartley’s deadpan 1990 family drama [1] might be getting a rerelease. (It isn’t on DVD, but is streaming on Netflix [2].) Instead, this is a trailer for David Schwimmer’s second directorial effort, in which a 14-year old girl (Liana Liberato) develops an online relationship with a boy who (shocker) turns out to be not… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 08/02/2011 21:13 Number of articles : 2

Titanic, Battlefield Earth and 9 More Abandoned Movie Web Sites

Yesterday, the official Web site for the film Space Jam — which hasn’t been updated since the movie opened 14 years ago — had quite the resurgence when it was discovered to still be working and functioning like it was 1996. Naturally, the site’s existence got us wondering about other abandoned, obsolete official film sites from this particular era of the Internet. And hoo boy, we found some gems.

DVD: The Best Colin Firth Performance You’ve Probably Never Seen

As awards season kicks into high, and pundits and audiences alike unpack their adjectives to describe Colin Firth’s performance in The King’s Speech , it seemed like the right time to mention one of his wonderfully charming and funny turns that was barely seen in this country — his starring role in Fever Pitch (out of print on DVD but available from Netflix ). No, not the Drew Barrymore/Jimmy Fallon Fever Pitch , although both films were based on the same novel.

Justin Bieber, Katy Perry Top Google’s ‘Zeitgeist’ List Of 2010

Eminem, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj also rank high on Google’s lists of the year’s most popular searches. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It may not come as a surprise to you, but Justin Bieber is very popular. The latest evidence of this is the just-released Google “Zeitgeist” chart, which aggregated the billions of queries the search engine received in 2010 and compiled them into one list of the most-searched topics of the year. And Bieber came out on top. JB edged out Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and the omnipresent Kim Kardashian to claim the #1 spot on Google’s “Fastest Rising People” list, which took the most popular people searches of the year and compared them to data from 2009. Eminem came in at #5, followed by Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Megan Fox and Robert Pattinson. Bieber was also #1 on the “Fastest Rising in Entertainment” list (ahead of Shakira, Eminem and, uh, Netflix), and landed at #3 on the general “Fastest Rising” list — bested only by Chatroulette and Apple’s iPad — making him the highest actual human being on the list. And that’s using data from the entire world; if you narrow the list to include only searches done in the U.S. , Bieber is #1 once again — by an even larger margin. The teen star’s total searches more than doubled those of Ke$ha, who comes in at #2, followed by Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj and “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks. Heidi Montag, Katy Perry, Kid Cudi, Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan round out the rest of the Top 10. Are you surprised Justin Bieber was one of the most popular Google searches of the year? 10 Slogans for Blockbuster’s New Advertising Campaign

Things have been looking bleak for Blockbuster Video lately, but apparently chain isn’t finished yet. According to the LA Times , the company is not only reorganizing to get out of bankruptcy, but also preparing to launch their first nation-wide advertising campaign since 2007. But what slogan can they possibly use to separate themselves from competitors like Netflix and Redbox while maintaining that distinct Blockbuster brand? Movieline has a few ideas.

Rent a Movie, Get a Tan

I doubt many tears are being shed for the slow demise of Blockbuster’s overpriced rentals, late-fees, and huge selection of direct-to-video horror clunkers. But independent video stores are another story. Sure that snobby video clerk made fun of you for renting How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days , but that’s part of their charm! Plus that clerk was right. In any case, it looks like cinephiles can rest easy because local video stores have a new, sure-fire survival strategy: tanning beds.
