Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” was apparently the song of the week on Fox. Two hit shows on the network featured covers of it in as many nights! Tuesday, on Glee , Matt Bomer’s guest appearance as the older brother of Darren Criss’ character featured a scene in which the two duet on the catchy track. While it was something of an odd choice to have brothers singing this song, as its lyrics imply a breakup between a couple, the guys absolutely killed. Wednesday, on American Idol’s top seven performance show, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone tag-teamed it. Which cover was better? Watch both and vote below: Darren Criss and Matt Bomer – Somebody That I Used to Know (Glee) Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone – Somebody That I Used to Know (American Idol) Which show’s cover of “Somebody That I Used to Know” was best?
In his first interview since being fired by Current TV , Keith Olbermann told David Letterman on The Late Show Tuesday that “I screwed up really big.” Explaining his ouster using a drawn-out metaphor, he said, “It’s my fault it didn’t succeed in the sense that I didn’t think the whole thing through.” “I didn’t say, ‘you know, if you buy a $10 million chandelier, you should have a house to put it in. Just walking around with a $10 million chandelier isn’t going to do anybody a lot of good, and it’s not going to do any good to the chandelier.'” Keith Olbermann on The Late Show With David Letterman “And it turned out we didn’t have a lot to put the house on to put the chandelier in, or a building permit, and I should have known that. And it is my fault at heart.” “Now, I’ve been in situations in my lifetime where the second I agreed to something, I got that sinking feeling in my stomach and I’ve said to myself on those occasions, ‘Holy goodness, I’ve just made a huge mistake.’” “So … you’re the chandelier?” Letterman asked, genuinely wondering. We assume that’s what he meant. Olbermann, who was fired by MSNBC before signing on with Current about a year ago, went on to explain: “In that situation, what you’re thinking is, ‘Oh, Lord, this is probably going to hit the water at some point,’ but what do you do? You have – you could bail out and say I’m getting out of this immediately,’ and trust me, I was thinking about that as early as like last July.” “We’d been on the air about 10 days and they fired the guy who knew what he was doing who I worked for and I went, ‘Uh-oh.’” “But I went home and just sort of had a conversation with myself and said, ‘Look, these – the two important groups that are more important than what I do about myself – the audience who, you know, went to struggle to find where the network was and join me, and, most importantly, the staff.’” “And I had 25 people who, most of them came with me from other jobs, one guy was with me four different places, and they put their careers at risk for me, and I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to them let alone thank them.” “I’m, you know, I’m so proud of them because the show editorially was never better, but I let them down because the thing didn’t continue.”
She may have a point… Niecy Nash’s TLC wedding special raked in nearly 5 million viewers, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the network gave the comedian her own show, “Leave It to Niecy.” Although she is enjoying her new reality TV-found fame, she says she doesn’t have to worry about becoming as famous as the Kardashians …. because she is black: “The truth is black celebrities are not as sought after in the press as white celebrities, and that is comforting,” Niecy says. “As a black celebrity, if we go out to a hot spot, you know there are going to be paparazzi there, but we aren’t the girl who someone is jumping out behind your trash [for] when we get home. So it’s nice to be able to live your dream and not be overwhelmed by what can be a downside of the business.” Niecy also points out that when readers flip through weekly celebrity magazines, they can count on one hand the number of times a black celebrity is pictured. But rather than find this trend disturbing, Niecy is grateful. “There is no reason to talk about it ’cause it’s a peaceful life,” says Niecy. “I’m not saying we should be stalked — I like it. I didn’t get into this business for other people to know my name. As a little girl, my destiny was stamped onto the canvas of my imagination at 5 years old. I was watching soaps with my grandmother. … The most gorgeous black women I had ever seen in my life came out, and I knew that that is what I wanted to do — be fabulous and black and on TV.” So if Britney Spears or Kim Kardashian were black, would they have a very different relationship with the press? “Yes,” Niecy replied. Do you think Niecy has a good point of view on this topic or is she trying to downplay the fact that paps aren’t chasing her around Hollyweird? Source More On Bossip! We have an update on the passing of Whitney Houston. A week after the official coroner’s report listed this singer’s cause of death as being a heart attack, likely related to cocaine use, it’s now been confirmed that the drug was , indeed, discovered in Whitney’s hotel room at the time her body was found. Initial reports had been sketchy on this fact, with rumors circulating that cocaine may have been present in Houston’s system – but no traces of the substances were anywhere near the bathtub in which she drowned. Allegations of someone tampering with the evidence even ran wild. But now sources connected to the investigation tell TMZ that “white, powdery remnants” were taken into custody and later identified as cocaine . Does this put the tragedy to rest? Sadly, probably not. Accusations of who supplied Whitney with her drugs of choice will continue for the foreseeable future. Ray J has already been forced to come out and defend himself against this charge .
Keith Olbermann has just been fired by the cable network that took him in after the much higher-profile cable network he was previously on cut him loose. Current TV, which was co-founded by Al Gore, released a statement saying it was parting ways with the pundit , surprisingly citing a difference in values. The decision comes less than a year after Keith Olbermann was fired by MSNBC , then hired by Current to help energize the network’s primetime ratings. Current said in a statement this afternoon: “We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet.” “We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.” “Current was founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.” Current also announced today that it will be giving former New York Governor and CNN personality Eliot Spitzer a show in the network’s 8 p.m. hour.
Miami Beach doesn’t need much help to be sexy- it’s the bikini capital of the world, after all. Nevertheless, Starz, the network who brought you a nonstop barrage of boobage on Spartacus and Boss , is giving Miami a nude boost on its new 1950’s-era gangster series Magic City. Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars as Ike Evans, an outwardly reputable businessman who’s in deep debt to ruthless mob boss Ben Diamond ( Danny Huston ). Ike’s business, the Miramar Playa Hotel, is much like Ike himself: a luxury tourist destination by day, the hotel transforms into a playground for prostitutes and mobsters by night. Bond babe Olga Kurylenko (left, nude in 2006’s Le Serpent ) co-stars as Ike’s sexy ex-showgirl wife, blissfully ignorant of her husband’s dirty double dealings. Starz has released a red-band trailer for the show, which premieres Friday, April 6 with a sneak preview TONIGHT at 11/10 Central , and before the series even starts they’ve already conjured up some magic titties. Stylist Linda Flowers tells MTV News that blond wig ‘gives his character a little bit of a push.’ By Amy Wilkinson Woody Harrelson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Stylist Linda Flowers had run with Vince’s “Entourage,” played with “Angels & Demons” and even primped a “Social Network” tycoon for his profile picture, but the Hollywood veteran took on her hairiest project yet with the eye-popping adaptation of ” The Hunger Games .” As the film’s hair department head, Flowers, in harmony with director Gary Ross’ vision, crafted the iconic, and frequently candy-colored, ‘dos of Effie Trinket and more than 500 Capitol citizens. We hopped on the phone with Flowers to chat about the meticulous mentor’s look, Woody Harrelson’s unconventional Haymitch style and where exactly all that hair went after Ross yelled, “Cut!” MTV News : What was your experience reading “The Hunger Games” for the first time? Did you start formulating looks as you read? Linda Flowers : When I read it, I fell in love with it, and I read all three of them very quickly. It’s such a great story, and it’s gonna appeal to so many different demographics. Anytime you get to read a book with colorful characters and they’ve got pink hair and blue hair, I’m in. My imagination was going crazy. I mean, how often do you get to put pink hair on somebody? MTV : What did you and Gary discuss during your initial conversation? Flowers : Gary’s main concern was with all the colored hair. He wanted people to take the Capitol seriously, and he wanted the looks to be couture. So when you’re talking about orange and aqua and pink and blue hair, the first place people go is very young, and they think it is more a street look or an urban look for kids. But the challenge was to put it on all age groups and make it look couture. MTV : Logistically, this had to be a grand-scale production. Describe a typical day on set. Flowers : When we were at the peak of all of our Capitol people, I had 45 hairdressers working because everyone had to go through hair and makeup. Each person had an individual look. When you do period movies, the hair is already set, the period has already been set, but there was nothing established for the look of this because it’s in the future. Each person that sat down, a look had to be created for them even if they were, like, #500 on the call sheet. So that was a real challenge, and plus, not just the hairdressers to do their hair, but we had to have a clean-up crew come in when we wrapped to take everyone’s hair, wigs and pieces off to reset them and get them ready for the next day. So it was an around-the-clock deal because we have 30 to 40 people doing hair and 10 to 15 to come in when we wrapped and take everyone down so the hairdressers could go home and sleep to get ready for the next day. MTV : Who had the most time-consuming look? Flowers : It was Effie, but the good thing was I could do Effie’s hair when she wasn’t in the trailer. Her hair definitely took the most time. From start to finish it was about 45 minutes, and I’m really fast. I constructed it slowly. She’s one of those people who’s so completely and purposefully put together that her wig would be an accessory just like a purse or a pair of shoes. So she has three wigs in the movie, and we’re going to have more for her in the next movie. She wears three different looks, and they’re all the same shape. I picked a classic shape, which has a ’30s finger-wave bob, and I took that and I really brushed it out, but it kept the finger waves, and I gave it a lot of volume. And then I took really heavily textured hair and put it in between the layers of her finger waves. MTV : It sounds like you’re already planning ahead for “Catching Fire.” Flowers : Yes. I prepped five or six wigs, and she only wore three in the first one, so we do have some for the second one, and I will prep more. I think everyone was afraid; they didn’t want people to be taken out of the movie with it being too over-the-top or too colorful, so that’s why I chose a pastel palette to start her off with in the movie. When you see her in the Capitol, it gets brighter and she gets a little more extreme. MTV : The hairstyle that’s probably raised the most eyebrows is Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch look, which he fashioned after his brother. What did you think when he approached you with the concept? Flowers : Well, he originally wanted it longer. He brought in a photo of his brother, and his brother looks just like him with the wig on. It was really what he wanted, and then, you know, I showed it to Gary, and he looked at it. He goes, “You know, I think that would be a good look for him, we just need to make it a little shorter.” It looks like the period. The District 12 people kind of have a ’30s-period haircut because they’re very poor and they work in the mines. It kinda looked like that but really grown out. The thing, too, when you’re trying to give a character a kind of character look — someone that has hair like he does — you can make it a little dirty and a little disheveled and make it look like you haven’t shampooed it recently, and it gives his character a little bit of a push. When you have no hair, you can’t really give that push. You can’t really see a passage of time; he’s normal, then he’s drunk and he woke up, and he’s hungover. You can articulate that and express that through the hair. With no hair, you really can’t express that. It really helped me help him with his character. MTV : I can only imagine what some random warehouse in North Carolina must look like with hundreds of wigs lying around. Flowers : You gotta remember, we used over 500 wigs in this movie. There is a warehouse full of trunks with wigs and stuff like that. I keep the cast wigs in a more secure — I don’t keep them in a warehouse. They’re actually in a very secure place that Lionsgate has. ‘Things will definitely be a little different’ when pregnant Snooki and crew shoot season six this summer, an MTV rep confirms. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV Snooki promised at the end of the latest season of “Jersey Shore” that she’d be back for more Seaside Heights, New Jersey, shenanigans, and she wasn’t lying. MTV News has confirmed that there will be another season of the “Shore” — with mom-to-be Snooki joining her pals. Although further details about season six of the hit MTV reality show have yet to be released — though we do know “Shore” will tape this summer — the network released a statement hinting that there will be new themes to explore. “While things will definitely be a little different this time when they hit the boardwalk, their trademark hilarity and family dysfunction will remain the same,” an MTV rep teased. A pregnant Snooki and JWoww are in the midst of filming their own spin-off, while DJ Pauly D’s spin-off, “The Pauly D Project,” will premiere on March 29. But the crew will reconvene for another summer in the sun in Jersey. When MTV News caught up with Pauly D recently, he seemed excited to shoot another season that made him and his housemates household names. “Absolutely! I’m there! I love summers on the Jersey Shore,” he said. “I love it as a show, and I love it with my roommates. I wouldn’t do it without [them], I gotta do it with them. I want all of them [there] and I want the Jersey Shore.” Looking back on season five, Pauly said that if the cast had learned anything, it was how much they loved the Shore after a season spent abroad in Italy. “This season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more,” he said. “So we took advantage of it and everything it has to offer. We were in Italy for so long [last season] that we never were away from the country for that amount of time, so you realize how much you miss gym, tan, laundry. There was no tanning beds in Italy.” For continuing “Jersey Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog.
