VMA Winners David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Others Became High-Profile Directors

Jonze went from directing Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” video to an Oscar nomination for “Being John Malkovich.” By Eric Ditzian David Fincher Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Somewhere between directing Will Smith and then Robert Pattinson on the big screen, Francis Lawrence took some time away from Hollywood to helm Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video. Before Dave Meyers stepped into Pink’s “Funhouse” video, he led Sophia Bush through the bloody terror of “The Hitcher.” There’s long been a connection between feature-length movies and music videos, and Lawrence and Meyers — both of whom are nominated for Best Direction at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — are just two of the folks who have worked in both mediums. Perhaps in the future, we might see Hype Williams, another of this year’s nominees, traveling from Jay-Z’s New York-centric “Empire State of Mind” to Tinseltown. Before the show goes live on Sunday, September 12, and we see which helmer triumphs, let’s take a look back at some of the most successful Hollywood directors who have won Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards. David Fincher Almost two decades before Fincher nabbed an Oscar nod for directing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he won the VMA directing award for Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” The next year he won again — this time for Madge’s “Vogue” — becoming the only director in MTV history to win Best Direction two years in a row. After collaborating with the Queen of Pop, Fincher went on to make his feature-film debut with “Alien 3” and then establish his own dark identity with the Brad Pitt-starring “Se7en.” His “Social Network,” a film about the founding of Facebook, is one of the fall’s most anticipated releases. Spike Jonze “Buddy Holly” begat “John Malkovich.” Jonze won his first Best Direction VMA for Weezer’s iconic “Happy Days”-inspired “Buddy Holly” video in 1995, then made his feature debut a few years later with the trippy “Being John Malkovich,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Jonze has gone on to direct “Adaptation” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” which grossed over $100 million last year. Marc Webb Webb is the man whose job it is to rescue Spider-Man . Following the collapse of the Tobey Maguire-starring franchise earlier this year, Sony turned to Webb to reboot the boy wonder series. Last year, Green Day turned to the director to helm “21 Guns,” a somber take on their hard-charging tune. His feature debut, “(500) Days of Summer,” was nominated for two Golden Globes, including a Best Actor nod for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mark Romanek Romanek has directed videos for everyone from David Bowie to Janet Jackson, earning himself MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1997. Then in 2004, thanks to Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” Romanek won his first Best Direction VMA. By then he’d already directed Robin Williams in the thriller “One Hour Photo.” His latest, “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s creepily elegant novel, starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last week. Jake Scott The images of sullen drivers stuck in an endless traffic jam set to the mournful sounds of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” are among the most indelible of ’90s-era music videos. Scott is the guy behind that vid, for which he won Best Direction. He’s also the guy behind Kristen Stewart’s upcoming drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” a troubling take on a runaway-turned-New Orleans stripper. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris There hardly seems to be a connection between the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 3-D gaming-style video for “Californication” and the Steve Carell-starring dark comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” … except that Dayton and Faris directed them both. The video won them Best Direction in 2000 and the movie was honored with four Oscar nominations in 2007, winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin. Samuel Bayer Bayer will forever be part of music history for directing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. But he didn’t win his first Best Direction VMA until 2005, when he helmed Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” He won his second direction Moonman two year later, thanks to Justin Timberlake and “What Goes Around.” This past spring, he resurrected the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, guiding the horror flick to an impressive $32.9 million opening. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. CNN’s Feyerick Promotes Ground Zero Mosque Imam

CNN’s Deborah Feyerick played up Imam Feisal Rauf’s apparent credentials as a “moderate” Muslim during a report on Wednesday’s American Morning. Feyerick omitted using sound bites from Rauf’s critics, and only briefly mentioned his controversial remarks about on CBS’s 60 Minutes about the 9/11 attacks and his reluctance to condemn Hamas. The CNN correspondent’s report led the 6 am Eastern hour, and was re-broadcast throughout the day on the network. Almost immediately, Feyerick stressed how Rauf is apparently a “voice of moderation” by playing three clips from three who unequivocally endorse him- the State Department’s P. J. Crowley, mosque developer Sharif El-Gamal, and Professor John Esposito of Georgetown University. She continued by describing the Islamic cleric as a ” Sufi Muslim, at the other end of the Islamic spectrum from the radical theology that feeds groups like al Qaeda .” After two further sound bites from Esposito, who gushed over Imam Rauf, Feyerick highlighted his background: “According to his biography, Feisal Abdul Rauf was born in Kuwait in 1948 into an Egyptian family steeped in religious scholarship . In 1997, he founded the non-profit American Society for Muslim Advancement- its mission, described on its website, as ‘strengthening an authentic expression of Islam based on cultural and religious harmony through interfaith collaboration, youth, and women’s empowerment.'” The correspondent didn’t bring up Rauf’s controversial past until the end of her report, and almost as an after-thought: ” He was criticized after 9/11 for saying U.S. support of oppressive regimes was partly responsible for the attacks, but maintained his remarks on 60 Minutes had been taken out of context. Rauf supports Israel’s right to exist, but says as a bridge builder, he can’t condemn radical Palestinian group Hamas as terrorists .” Overall, Feyerick played six clips in favor of the imam, and none critical of him. She didn’t even quote from any specific critic of his. Feyerick has been on a roll, as of late, with her recent one-sided reporting on the Ground Zero mosque and related “Islamophobia” issues. On August 26, she advanced the theory that the stabbing of Muslim taxicab driver in New York City may have been ” connected to this big Ground Zero controversy, where we’re hearing so much anti-Muslim sentiment .” Exactly a week later, on September 2, the CNN correspondent c ontinued her network’s promotion of the charge that “Islamophobia” is a growing phenomenon inside the U.S. The full transcript of Deborah Feyerick’s report from Wednesday’s American Morning: FEYERICK (voice-over): If you have never heard him speak, this is what Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has to say. IMAM FEISAL ABDUL RAUF: The major theme in Islam is the oneness of God, and that we should worship one God- love and adore the one God. FEYERICK: People who know Imam Feisal say he’s a voice of moderation. The State Department- STATE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT SECRETARY P. J. CROWLEY: His work on tolerance and religious diversity is well known. FEYERICK: The developer of the controversial Islamic center near Ground Zero. SHARIF EL-GAMAL: He is somebody who has sacrificed his life to building bridges within communities. FEYERICK: Islamic scholar and university professor John Esposito. FEYERICK (on-camera): How would you describe him? Is he a threat? JOHN ESPOSITO, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY: Feisal is, from my point of view- he is ‘Mr. Mellow.’ FEYERICK (voice-over): Imam Feisal is a Sufi Muslim, at the other end of the Islamic spectrum from the radical theology that feeds groups like al Qaeda. ESPOSITO: He approaches Islam spiritually. He is a Sufi in background, which means one pursues, if you will, a more, kind of, spiritual mystical path. He’s somebody who would find terrorism and religious extremism as abhorrent. He’s run a mosque in this area for years and years and years. FEYERICK: That mosque, the Masjid al-Farah, is 10 blocks from Ground Zero, and has co-existed peacefully in the Tribeca neighborhood for 28 years. ESPOSITO: He has integrated himself into the community. FEYERICK: According to his biography, Feisal Abdul Rauf was born in Kuwait in 1948 into an Egyptian family steeped in religious scholarship. In 1997, he founded the non-profit American Society for Muslim Advancement- its mission, described on its website, as ‘strengthening an authentic expression of Islam based on cultural and religious harmony through interfaith collaboration, youth, and women’s empowerment.’ Several years later, Rauf founded the Cordoba Institute to improve relations between the Muslim world and the West, writing how American Muslims can help bridge the divide. The State Department noticed, sending him as a cultural ambassador on four trips to the Middle East, most recently this summer. GRAEME BANNERMAN, FORMER STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL: They try to get people who reflect the best aspects of American society. FEYERICK: Rauf is often asked to speak at meetings like the World Economic Forum in Davos. He was criticized after 9/11 for saying U.S. support of oppressive regimes was partly responsible for the attacks, but maintained his remarks on 60 Minutes had been taken out of context. Rauf supports Israel’s right to exist, but says as a bridge builder, he can’t condemn radical Palestinian group Hamas as terrorists. As for the proposed Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero, he says that, too, is about bridges. RAUF: This is also our expression of the 99.999 percent of Muslims all over the world, including in America, who have condemned and continue to condemn terrorism. This is about our stand as the Muslim community, which has been part of this community. FEYERICK: But right now, this moderate Muslim cleric finds himself at the eye of a storm. Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.

REPORT: Conservative Groups Gearing Up To Spend $400 Million On Midterm Election

http://www.newdeal20.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/picture-21.png In the wake of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, corporations and special interest groups now enjoy the ability to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections. Now, with less than 10 weeks until November, it’s clear just how far conservative groups are willing to go to try to influence the midterm elections. According to a new report from ThinkProgress, conservative organizations have committed (or already spent) $400 MILLION to advance their conservative agenda at the ballot box this year. For comparison’s sake, this outside money alone is more than the Democratic campaign committees http://bit.ly/ahWQxY spent combined when they took back both houses of Congress in the last midterm election. Indeed, the Wall Street Journal notes that special interest groups have already spent three times as much in 2010 than they had in 2006 http://bit.ly/aKSlIP . Among the outside groups that plan to spend hundreds of MILLIONs of dollars electing conservatives are some familiar faces and some new ones as well. While the NRA and the Chamber of Commerce have long supported conservative causes, the former plans to double its spending from $10 MILLION in 2006 http://bit.ly/dmz7Gt to $20 MILLION http://bit.ly/bZHEsw now and the latter will triple its commitment http://http ://bit.ly/aKSlIP to $75 MILLION this year http://bit.ly/9v6ClV . Many new groups are also entering the scene in a big way, including Karl Rove’s American Crossroads group with $52 MILLION http://politi.co/awScg7 and Norm Coleman’s American Action Network with $25 MILLION http://bit.ly/aslsCg . Those conservative groups trying to use $400 MILLION in outside spending to tip the midterm election include: > – *Chamber of Commerce* has pledged to spend > – $75 MILLION http://http ://bit.ly/9v6ClV > – *American Crossroads* has pledged to spend > – $52 MILLION http://http ://politi.co/awScg7 > – *Americans for Prosperity* has pledged to spend > – $45 MILLION http://nyti.ms/a8gWtX > – *Republican State Leadership Committee* has pledged to spend > – $40 MILLION http://http ://bit.ly/aslsCg > – *American Action Network* has pledged to spend > – $25 MILLION http://bit.ly/aslsCg > – *American Future Fund* has pledged to spend up to > – $25 MILLION http://bit.ly/dywWzx > – *Club for Growth* has pledged to spend AT LEAST > – $24 MILLION http://bit.ly/cCKOS5 > – *National Republican Trust PAC* has pledged to spend AT LEAST > – $20 MILLION http://bit.ly/aKSlIP > – **An unnamed** *Health Insurance Industry Coalition* has pledged to spend > – $20 MILLION http://bit.ly/bST4bX > – *National Rifle Association* has pledged to spend > – $20 MILLION http://http ://bit.ly/bZHEsw > – *Faith and Freedom Coalition* has pledged to spend > – $11 MILLION http://bit.ly/ddcqhn > – *FreedomWorks* has pledged to spend > – $10 MILLION http://http ://nyti.ms/a8gWtX > – *Americans for Job Security* has pledged to spend > – $10 MILLION http://politi.co/cSUiQa > – *Susan B. Anthony List* has pledged to spend > – $6 MILLION http://bit.ly/9T5PLf > – *Our Country Deserves Better (Tea Party Express)* has ALREADY SPENT > – $5 MILLION http://bit.ly/ajFcGU > – *Tax Relief Coalition* has already spent > – $4 MILLION http://bit.ly/a0V4p2 > – *Republican Majority Campaign* has pledged to spend > – $3 MILLION http://bit.ly/avk0QQ > – *Campaign for Working Families* has pledged to spend > – $2 MILLION http://bit.ly/cpP6Bv > – *Heritage Action for America* has pledged to spend > – $1 MILLION http://bit.ly/9Wb55b > – *Financial Services Roundtable* has already spent > – $0.5 MILLION http://bit.ly/aQ4pNR > – *Family Research Council* FRC has raised > – $0.5 MILLION http://bit.ly/dx5RWf > – *Citizens United Political Victory Fund* has pledged to spend > – $0.2 MILLION http://bit.ly/caDIWO – ** TOTAL: $399.2 MILLION or $399,200,000 ** – Given the number of progressive accomplishments in the 111th Congress, including health care reform, the economic stimulus bill, and Wall Street reform, it’s no wonder that conservative groups are fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent a repeat next term. Chris LaCivita, a Republican strategist who has also been involved in many independent-expenditure campaigns, told Politico, “If there is a time for independent groups to step up, this is it. This is the year for independent groups to put up or shut up.” http://politi.co/cSUiQa Indeed, with conservative special interest groups putting it all on the line this November, their $400 MILLION pledge may even increase before long. added by: toyotabedzrock

Liberal Radio Host Asks Christian Conservative: ‘How Many More Children Will Have to Die Before You Guys Back Off?’

Nationally syndicated liberal radio host Thom Hartmann is no Keith Olbermann — he’s not allergic to conservatives on his show. But that doesn’t mean he’s kind, or even fair. Focus on the Family has a new “True Tolerance” campaign focused on stopping school bullying — against everyone — but without programs that promote moral acceptance of homosexuality. FOTF’s Candi Cushman appeared on CNN this week to debate this, but Anderson Cooper wasn’t half as rough as Hartmann on Thursday afternoon. He mentioned that gay teens are much more likely to attempt suicide than straight teens and then just asked Cushman, point blank: “How many more children will have to die before you guys back off?” This, in itself, is a form of bullying. You must accept left-wing lesson plans formulated by Obama “safe schools” czar Kevin Jennings and his group GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) or you favor gay teen suicide. Like a typical liberal, Hartmann wants the liberal, secular worldview on sexuality taught because it’s based on “science” and the opposing conservative view is infected by religion, which must not be allowed to inform a viewpoint anywhere in a public school. He lectured Cushman: The reason why I don’t want your viewpoints promoted in school is, a) they’re not based in science, they’re based in religion, and I believe in a separation of church and state, and b) taken to the extreme, maybe not yours but many of the people in your movement, what they do is they cause more kids to commit suicide…I think that you and the work that you’re doing and the people who you’re associated with are creating an environment that is killing our children.  Hartmann has provided yet another example of how liberal talk radio is not a reasonable or civil space to discuss and debate issues. It’s far too often a forum for mudslinging of the most vicious kind.

Gannons to the Left of Me: Bill Press Asks a Pro-Obama, Anti-Beck Question at White House Briefing

In 2005, NBC and MSNBC and CNN were up in arms that conservative “Jeff Gannon” was allowed into the White House briefing room by Team Bush to ask “questions other reporters considered softballs.” Up until now, liberal talk-radio hosts like Ed Schultz have been seated in the front row of Obama press conferences, but they didn’t ask softball questions. On Thursday, it happened. Liberal radio host Bill Press asked press secretary Robert Gibbs to denounce Glenn Beck’s attacks on the president’s “committed Christianity.” BILL PRESS: Robert, over the last four days, Glenn Beck has criticized the president for believing in liberation theology, which he calls a Marxist form of Christianity. Two questions, Does the president, in your knowledge, even know what liberation theology is? ROBERT GIBBS: I don’t know the answer to that. I will say this, Bill, um, a crude paraphrasing of an old quote, and that is, people are entitled to their own opinion, as ill-informed as it may be, but they’re not entitled to their own facts. The president is a committed, mainstream Christian. I don’t, I have no evidence that would guide me, as to what [whether?] Glenn Beck would have any genuine knowledge as to what the president does and does not believe. PRESS: So this Marxist form of Christianity? GIBBS: Again, I can only imagine where Mr. Beck conjured that from. The double-ignorance of this exchange is impressive. How can Bill Press suggest that Barack Obama is ignorant about anything? They’re defending Obama now by suggesting he’s uninformed about progressive strains of Christianity? For his part, Gibbs is stonewalling athletically to assert there’s no evidence that any Obama opponent could assemble to assert Obama’s church of two decades, Trinity United Church of Christ on the south side of Chicago, embraced “black liberation theology” and its leading light, James Cone. In defending Obama, the liberal magazine The Christian Century acknowledged: There is no denying, however, that a strand of radical black political theology influences Trinity. James Cone, the pioneer of black liberation theology, is a much-admired figure at Trinity. Cone told me that when he’s asked where his theology is institutionally embodied, he always mentions Trinity. Video of the Meet Bill Press exchange is supportively offered at a Hillary Clinton-founded media pressure group .

BBC Chief Admits ‘Massive’ Left-wing Bias, Vows to Remedy Imbalance

BBC Director General Mark Thompson admitted to the UK Daily Mail in an article today that Britain’s state-run news outlet has had a “massive” left-wing bias. He insisted, though, that the network is taking steps to remedy the ideological slant. BBC has a history of promoting the ultra-leftist agenda on most issues. But to see the channel’s top dog admit it in an interview with the Daily Mail was quite a sight. Now if only some television outlets on this side of the pond would do the same. While Thompson pleaded guilty to a liberal slant, he insisted that a new crop of journalists is changing the political face of the BBC. The Daily Mail’s Paul Revoir reported today: The TV chief also admitted there had been a ‘struggle’ to achieve impartiality and that staff were ‘ mystified’ by the early years of Margaret Thatcher’s government. But he claimed there was now ‘much less overt tribalism’ among the current crop of young journalists, and said in recent times the corporation was a ‘broader church’. He claimed there was now an ‘honourable tradition of journalists from the right’ working for the corporation. His comments, made in the New Statesman magazine, are one of the clearest admissions of political bias from such a senior member of its staff. The BBC has long been accused of being institutionally biased towards the Left, and an internal report from 2007 said it had to make greater efforts to avoid liberal bias. Talk about honesty! But while the BBC is looking into ways to remedy its “massive” slant to the left, swaths of the American news media have yet to even acknowledge that that slant exists. First, do no harm…
