Detachment Poster Debut: Adrien Brody’s Class is in Session

Nearly a year on from its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, director Tony Kaye’s ensemble drama Detachment is readying to make its debut on VOD and in theaters. This calls for a poster! Movieline’s got your first look at the one-sheet — featuring leading man Adrien Brody and a high school classroom in desperate need of a janitor — after the break. From this site’s Tribeca review : Detachment follows substitute teacher Henry Barthes (Brody) through his extended stay at a Queens high school, a borderline war zone where students would sooner drop a loogie than an apple on an instructor’s desk, and where city administrators openly link plunging property values to plunging test scores. This is where contemporary education has gone to die, slowly and painfully. Henry swims through an ensemble-cast cosmos of lifers Their banter — about a dead colleague here, a popped pill there — keeps them sane and human enough amid the savagery. They’ve all but given up on the kids, defecting to the private sector when the hopelessness of teaching public school finally becomes one humiliation too many. After a while, in fact, Detachment feels as though Kaye is telling a ghost story — a novel, really, with characters and back stories fluttering through magic-hour prisms and saturated nocturnal light, their yelps and groans and pleas and dins and salutations and whispers hand-stitched into narrative breaths, their memories folded into daydreams and pummeled into nightmares, these fluorescent-lit cathedrals of learning dismantled before their inhabitants’ eyes, finally windblown into oblivion. The film demands being taken seriously even as it testifies to its own futility, like the obituary of some household name you loved as a kid. It’s point-blank blame and benediction of teachers themselves, resolving only to leave you wondering how things got so bad while also wondering why no one told you sooner how bad they’d been getting. Resolving, that is, when it’s not suggesting you never listened in the first place and most definitely aren’t listening now. Bam. Also check out Movieline’s interview with Brody about the film; Tribeca Film will uncork Detachment on Feb. 24 via Movies On Demand, iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU and other platforms before opening it theatrically in select cities beginning March 16. The Only Illustrated War Horse Review You Will Ever Need

That DGA snub smarts all the more this morning: “IN CONCLUSION: This is a standard horse movie about projecting human ideals, emotions, and symbolism onto animals, with a decent war movie sandwiched in the middle. There are about four ‘pretty horsey runs really fast’ scenes, so I give it 4 out of 5 horseshoes!” [ The Hairpin ]

Why Ya Gotta Be So Hard on Gigli?

“It’s got Ben Affleck as a big, dumb mook, and, well, he’s pretty good at it. And it’s got Jennifer Lopez playing her most interesting character since Out of Sight But those two are the reason that Gigli arrived with such built-in hostility from moviegoers and critics, because this was the film where the duo met and fell into the PDA-heavy romance that become such a constant, unceasing annoyance in the months that followed. It was a classic example of buyer’s remorse — through tabloids and entertainment ‘news’ programs, we couldn’t get enough Bennifer coverage, and then, in the blink of an eye, we’d had enough, we were done with them, and we didn’t want to see anything that had anything to do with them.” Yeah! Sheesh. Actually, no , but still. [ Flavorwire ]

Devil Inside Director Fails Upward

Congrats of some fashion are in order to William Brent Bell, whose universally reviled yet spectacularly successful The Devil Inside has today yielded news of his not-very-anticipated follow-up. Written by David Cohen, The Vatican is said to be a “conspiracy-driven thriller that uses some found-footage techniques like The Devil Inside did”; Warner Bros. is reportedly fast-tracking the project. Good to know! I’ll ready the riot police . [ Deadline ]

Shia LaBeoummer: Wettest County Dumped to August

After their not-so-dextrous handling of The Road throttled director John Hillcoat’s film into cultural oblivion, let’s be honest: There’s something bittersweet about watching the Weinsteins suffocate Hillcoat’s anticipated follow-up Wettest County for old times’ sake. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s acclaimed Depression-era novel The Wettest County in the World , the movie has been shifted from its relatively favorable April 20 release date to the death row of Labor Day weekend — Aug. 31, where, to be fair, where Focus Features has dined out the last two years with similarly adult-targeted fare like The American and The Debt . Of course, those movies had proven stars in George Clooney and Helen Mirren, respectively; practically since its inception, Wettest County has been viewed as a dramatic mainstream proving ground for leading men LaBeouf and Hardy. Now it’s more like some kind of three-legged race to the holiday box-office finish line, with the duo facing off against the supernatural thriller 7500 . Good luck, fellas! Anyway! All the more resources for the surging #ConsiderUggie campaign . [ LAT ]

Kanye West and The Jetsons Movie — Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together?

Among the many stream of consciousness topics Kanye West brain-dumped in his epic Twitter session Wednesday night — his professional frustrations, his fashion aspirations, his new design company aimed at picking up where Steve Jobs left off — was a brief mention of one curious film project in particular. “I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson [sic] movie and…” Wait, WHAT? The Jetsons , as in the long-gestating live-action Jetsons movie? And Kanye would have a hand in making this happen? Mr. West, you’ve got my attention now. If Kanye’s Jetsons project is the one I think he’s talking about, it’s the live-action reboot that’s been kicking around for years, once scripted by Adam Goldberg ( Fanboys ) with Robert Rodriguez attached to direct. Rodriguez went on to make Spy Kids 4 instead and the project hasn’t surfaced much since, so West’s Tweet is the first indication in a while that the thing’s actually back on track. Unfortunately, details on what exactly this “creative director” position would be were lost in West’s Tweet-crazy haze of thoughts on the creative process and the limits celebrity have imposed on his artistic freedom, or whatever. “Being a celebrity has afforded me many opportunities but has also boxed me in creatively,” he wrote, also noting that he hasn’t bought new jewelry in two whole years. See? You don’t know Yeezy! But anyway, those Jetsons plans: I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie and someone on the call yelled out.. you should do a Jetsons tour! This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course becuase for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour… Or Coachella or Glow in the Dark or Runaway.. you know I have real ideas… Not that West seems to be interested in anything but forward momentum, but a Jetsons movie along the aesthetic lines of his space-toony Takashi Murakami-designed Graduation album would be kind of awesome. In the least, it would make the very idea of a Jetsons reboot vaguely palatable. But while that idea would be cool and all, how can West possibly fit that in with the huge world-changing plans he Tweeted out last night, which include:

Let’s Hear it For J. Hoberman

This was, oh, five years in coming , but the long-time Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman has been let go from the paper. Fun fact: Hoberman’s 34-year relationship with the Voice commenced with a high-low glimpse at David Lynch’s experimental blast Eraserhead (” Eraserhead ‘s not a movie I’d drop acid for, although I would consider it a revolutionary act if someone dropped a reel of it into the middle of Star Wars “) and concluded this week with a high-low glimpse at Ken Jacobs’s experimental blast Seeking the Monkey King (“This homemade slingshot has the capacity to resist and pulverize the idiotic visual aggression of a commercial behemoth like Transformers . It’s a ’60s vision happening today—beautiful, terrifying, and determined to storm the doors of perception”). Anyway, don’t sweat it, he’ll be back. [ Capital New York ]

Benedict Cumberbatch Is Star Trek 2’s Villain

Here’s cause for excitement for J.J. Abrams ’s Star Trek sequel , set to debut May 2013: British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to join returning cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Co. Better news: He’s reportedly playing the villain. If your first thought is “Benewhat Cumberwho?” see why you should take this as very good news after the jump. Thirty five year-old Cumberbatch has been active in theater, TV, and film for a decade, but had a banner last few years with roles in The Whistleblower , BBC’s Sherlock , and this awards season’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse . His acerbic take on Sherlock Holmes is probably his best known and best loved work of late, but his turn as Gary Oldman ’s skeptical but loyal right hand man in Tinker Tailor is another recent highlight; next year he’ll pull double duty in The Hobbit voicing the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer for Peter Jackson. (If you were lucky/smart enough to catch last year’s brilliant British satire Four Lions , you might recall Cumberbatch’s cameo as a frustrated negotiator trying in vain to break through to a bunch of inept terrorists.) There’s a somewhat delicate, dangerous edge to Cumberbatch that could play well against the all-American machismo of Pine’s Kirk in Star Trek 2 , though details on Cumberbatch’s character have yet to be revealed. And look! Tinker Tailor co-star Tom Hardy , another Brit breakout, had this to say of Cumberbatch’s acting prowess from back when they starred in the 2007 BBC biopic Stuart: A Life Backwards . So take it from fellow one-time Trek villain Hardy ( Star Trek Nemesis ) and the growing legion of stateside Cumberbatch fanatics: This casting sounds like a promising move on Abrams’ part. What say you, Trekkers? [ Deadline , Variety ]

Russell Brand Files For Divorce From Katy Perry After a Year of Marriage

Sad news for the fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand ‘s marriage: The pop star who provided the voice of Smurfette and her Get Him to the Greek husband have filed for divorce after just 14 months of wedlock. Now repeat after me: I will not let this Hollywood divorce ruin my New Year’s Eve . I will not let this Hollywood divorce ruin my New Year’s Eve. Earlier this afternoon, Brand — who just finished filming Adam Shankman’s ’80s musical movie Rock of Ages — issued a statement to the USA Today : “”Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.” News of the divorces arrives weeks after tabloid speculation that a split was impending. In honor of this sad news, let’s revisit an eerie Get Him to the Greek clip which shows Brand’s larger-than-life character Aldous Snow breaking up with his pop-star girlfriend (Rose Byrne) on a talk show.
