He said that if she picked up her grades, he would fund her entire college education. This weekend, he followed through. According to Richmond.com , Varina High School Senior Harshai James met Sherman at a “Celebrity Waiter” dinner last year where in their quick conversation he mentioned that if she picked up her grades, he would fund her college. The event took place to support the “Excel To Excellence” foundation, which was started by Sherman’s teammate who also attended Varina High School, Michael Robinson. This year, Hershai made honor roll and got her tuition covered by the athlete. All parties have kept to amount she’s received a secret. James plans on attending Norfolk University. Good luck grad! Gregg Allman, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known as the longtime frontman of The Allman Brothers Band, has passed away at the age of 69. Sources close to his family say Allman died peacefully at his home in Savannah. No cause of death was given, but a statement on his official website notes that Allman had been battling a number of serious ailments in recent years. “Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years,” the statement reads. “During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.” Gregg formed the Allman brothers band with his brother, Duane Allman, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 1971 at the age of 24. Together, the brothers penned such Southern rock classics as “Midnight Rider,” “Whipping Post,” and “Melissa.” For many, the band’s distinct blend of bluesy roots rock and jam band psychedelia became one of the defining sounds of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Musically active until his final days, Allman’s influence as a singer, songwriter, and paragon of counterculture cool cannot be overstated. At the height of his fame, Allman was almost as well-known for his hedonistic lifestyle and high-profile romances as for his trailblazing music. Stories of Allman’s hard-partying ways contributed to his status as a living legend, but never eclipsed his music. (Asked by Stephen Colbert if the story of a private flight crew spelling out “Welcome, Allman Brothers Band” in cocaine was true, Gregg replied, “They abbreviated ‘Brothers.'”) Allman was married and divorced six times and became a tabloid staple during his highly-publicized split from music icon Cher in 1975. Within minutes of the news of his death, Allman’s name became the number one trending topic on Twitter, with tributes pouring in from family, friends, and a legion of devoted friend. “Words are impossible,” tweeted a clearly grief-stricken Cher. “I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music,” wrote Allman’s friend and longtime manager, Michael Lehman. “He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans. Gregg was an incredible partner and an even better friend. We will all miss him.” Allman is survived by five children, including musicians Devon and Elijah Blue. We send our heartfelt condolences to those close to this iconic musician. May he rest in peace. Cortez Kennedy, the former NFL defensive lineman who spent ten years with the Seattle Seahawks, has passed away at the age of 48. His cause of death remains unknown. Kennedy passed away in Orlando, and officials say they’re currently investigating the matter. A spokesperson for the Orlando Police Department says there’s no reason to suspect foul play, and Kennedy’s death appears to have resulted from natural causes. Drafted third overall in the 1990 draft, Kennedy spent the entirety of his stellar career with the Seahawks. During his decade in the league, Kennedy was selected for the Pro Bowl an impressive eight times. In 1992, he recorded 14 sacks and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. Kennedy sat out the 2001 season due to injury and announced his retirement from football in 2002. He received numerous offers from other teams, but stated that he wished to finish his career with the team that had given him his start. Kennedy was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012, and with a look at his career stats, it’s not hard to see why: In 167 games with Seattle, he recorded 668 tackles, 58 sacks, and 3 interceptions. In the minutes after news of Kennedy’s death went public, Kennedy instantly became a trending topic on social media, with some of the biggest names to ever play the game playing tribute: “Really sad to lose a guy like Cortez Kennedy,” tweeted John Elway. “A great personality, a great player & I enjoyed competing against him. Heck, Josh Waring from The Real Housewives of Orange County , was actually charged with attempted murder, which kind of takes the cake. Who else have run afoul of the authorities, though? Find out below! 1. Kelly Bensimon ‘The Real Housewives of New York’ star was arrested in 2009 for punching her then-boyfriend, Nick Stefanov in the eye. Stefanov, according to People, allegedly fled the apartment and ran to the nearest precinct to press charges. 2. Sonja Morgan Morgan was arrested for driving under the influence in 2010, after partying in the Hamptons over Memorial Day Weekend. She went through a stop sign and refused to take a Breathalyzer after failing field sobriety tests, so the officer on duty handcuffed the reality star. 3. Josh Waring Waring, son of former Orange County star Lauri Peterson, was arrested on seven counts in June 2016, including attempted murder. 4. Joe Giudice Where to begin? Giudice is currently serving time for tax fraud, but his previous arrests include a DUI and impersonating his brother in order to get a driver’s license. In 2015, he was caught driving with suspended license. Upon Giudice’s release from prison, he could face deportation, as he is not a US citizen (he was born in Italy, but moved here when he was very young). 5. Peter Thomas Cynthia Bailey’s estranged husband was arrested for simple assault on a woman in 2008. He was arrested a year later on the same charge, along with “battery with visible harm.” 6. Marysol Patton The Real Housewives of Miami star was arrested for a DUI in 2010. Chris Cornell, a musician who rose to fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden before taking on the same role for Audioslave, died Wednesday night in Detroit. He was 52 years old. Brian Bumbery, a rep for the artist, has confirmed this sad piece of news to the Associated Press and other outlets. Via a statement to CNN, Bumbery says that Cornell was performing in The Motor City with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a domestic tour in April, when he passed away. He referred to the death as “sudden and unexpected,” saying in full: “His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. “They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.” Cornell had just taken the stage on Wednesday evening at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Soundgarden was among the most prominent bands in the grunge music scene that dominated the 1990s. The band’s hits included “Spoonman,” ”Fell on Black Days,” ”Black Hole Sun,” “My Wave” and “The Day I Tried to Live.” Cornell started his career in Seattle back in 1984 when he helped form the popular group. We will need to await an autopsy before learning the cause of death, but Cornell was open through the years about his struggle with alcohol abuse and those close to him who died from a similar addiction. “I’ve lost a lot of young, brilliant friends, people that I thought were very inspired,” he told Rolling Stone in 2015, adding: “They’re all young and these guys all had limitless potential in their lives in front of them.” It’s true: With his passing, Cornell joins a long line of lead grunge rock singers who died at a young age. To wit: – Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home in 1994 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. – Alice in Chains’ original frontman, Layne Staley, died from a drug overdose in 2002. – Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots passed away of an accidental overdose in 2015. Soundgarden won two Grammy Awards in 1995. The track “Black Hole Sun” took home the Grammy for best hard rock performance, while the song “Spoonman” won for best metal performance that year. After the band broke up in 1997, Cornell performed solo for a few years prior to forming Audioslave. That super group included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford, and had a successful run in its own right. Soundgarden reunited in 2012 and released the band’s sixth studio album, “King Animal.” Wrote musician Dave Navarro upon learning Cornell had died: “SO SO stunned to hear about Chris Cornell! Such a terrible and sad loss! Thinking of his family tonight! RIP.” We, like so many fans, share the same sentiment. Trump Asked Comey To End Flynn Probe Well, now that he doesn’t have a job anymore , former FBI director James Comey is letting these secrets FLY in the media. According to new reports, Donald Trump asked Comey abandon the investigation into the activities of ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn before giving him the boot. CNN reports that in a memo written by Comey immediately after the oval office meeting that took place in February, he details Trump flat out asking him to turn the other way when it comes to Flynn. “I hope you can let this go,” he said to him. The request serves as pretty damning evidence that Trump directly sought to influence the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia. Of course, the White House denies it all with this statement: “While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn. The President has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations.
