There’s a strange twist to the death of Don Cornelius. As previously reported, the Soul Train creator took his own life early this morning via a gunshot to the head, as his son discovered his body and called 911. But it’s another relative who will soon make news as a result of this tragedy. According to documents obtained by TMZ, the music icon passed away with a pair of life insurance policies in his name – and because the suicide took place more than two years after he signed them, they cannot be challenged by California law and around $300,000 will be handed out to Don’s ex-wife, Viktoria. Who Cornelius despised. The couple got divorced in 2009, following a conviction for Don on a charge of domestic abuse and an allegation against his wife that she pepper sprayed him on numerous occasions. Meanwhile, countless music industry folks expressed their sympathy for the Soul Train creator via Twitter, but we’ll give the final word here to Aretha Franklin. “It’s so shocking and stunning. God bless him,” the artist said. “He created a solid and broad foundation for young people and adults alike to socialize, dance and have good clean fun. He united the young adult community single-handedly… Everybody loved Soul Train and appreciated Don!”

Ever since Madonna has been taking potshots at Lady Gaga and Elton John. Most recently, Madonna was overheard talking smack about Janet Jackson. During an interview to promote her new movie and Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, Madonna threw a subliminal jab at Ms. Jackson for her controversial nip slip during her halftime performance at Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004. When asked if she was planning any “naughty” surprises with her show, Madge said, “I have not mainstreamed and I’m not planning anything naughty. I’m planning something super entertaining.” She then added, “Yep, yep! You don’t have to show nipples to be interesting and it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re cutting edge if you do right?” Subliminal disses aside, Madonna’s upcoming halftime show is shaping up to be a huge show with queen Nicki Minaj just confirming that she will join Madonna onstage for the Feb. 5 event in Indianapolis. Also, added to the show are reportedly LMFAO and officially Cee Lo Green.

Chris Brown will perform at the Grammy Awards next month, E! reports . It will be his first appearance at the annual show since 2009, when … you know. The two are said to be on good terms now, and even hooking up … but they kept their distance last week. Brown was there with GF Karrueche Tran. The Grammy Awards will be hosted by NCIS: LA star LL Cool J and telecast live on CBS from Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday, February 12.
