Justin Bieber, Katy Perry Top Google’s ‘Zeitgeist’ List Of 2010

Eminem, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj also rank high on Google’s lists of the year’s most popular searches. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It may not come as a surprise to you, but Justin Bieber is very popular. The latest evidence of this is the just-released Google “Zeitgeist” chart, which aggregated the billions of queries the search engine received in 2010 and compiled them into one list of the most-searched topics of the year. And Bieber came out on top. JB edged out Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and the omnipresent Kim Kardashian to claim the #1 spot on Google’s “Fastest Rising People” list, which took the most popular people searches of the year and compared them to data from 2009. Eminem came in at #5, followed by Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Megan Fox and Robert Pattinson. Bieber was also #1 on the “Fastest Rising in Entertainment” list (ahead of Shakira, Eminem and, uh, Netflix), and landed at #3 on the general “Fastest Rising” list — bested only by Chatroulette and Apple’s iPad — making him the highest actual human being on the list. And that’s using data from the entire world; if you narrow the list to include only searches done in the U.S. , Bieber is #1 once again — by an even larger margin. The teen star’s total searches more than doubled those of Ke$ha, who comes in at #2, followed by Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj and “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks. Heidi Montag, Katy Perry, Kid Cudi, Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan round out the rest of the Top 10. Are you surprised Justin Bieber was one of the most popular Google searches of the year? Nicki Minaj, Drake Set To Shoot ‘Moment 4 Life’ Video

Young Money president Mack Maine tells MTV News clique aims to film clip for Pink Friday track in December. By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj recently experienced something few new artists can claim: seeing your debut earn the #2 spot on the Billboard albums chart. The Queens native’s Pink Friday LP sold a little more than 375,000 copies in its first week of release, falling just behind Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Now the MC is prepping the video for Friday ‘s “Moment 4 Life,” which features Young Money labelmate Drake. “She’s shooting hopefully on December 20,” Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News. “We’re still trying to work out the date for the next video with [Nicki] and Drake for the ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. That’s the next project.” We also spoke to the Young Money head about Nicki’s success and what it has meant to the Miami-by-way-of-New Orleans clan. “It was [a special moment], especially with her being a female in this day and time too,” Maine said. “Also, people don’t know that I was a big factor in making sure that Nicki got signed with us and also just sticking with her through ups and downs. “Just to see her go from a seed being planted to a … forest, just a beautiful flawless forest … the world recognizes. Big ups to Nicki, she worked hard,” he continued. “She represents the female gender, and she basically delivered. There were a lot of odds against her and she defeated all of that and, for her to deliver like that, I gotta say congratulations.” True to form, when news of her sales reached the animated MC , she was overcome, Maine recalled. “She was excited. We talked about it and her emotion was crazy,” Maine said. “She basically shed tears, tears of joy. I have to congratulate her and say thank you to all of the fans that supported — without them we wouldn’t be anything. … She wouldn’t be anything.” Are you excited that “Moment 4 Life” is Nicki’s next single? Kanye West’s ‘Monster’ Video Preview Leaks Online

‘Ye, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross are all featured in gruesome sneak peek. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West (file) Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage One week after a clip of Kanye West’s “Monster” video leaked online featuring Rick Ross rapping while chomping down on a bloody piece of meat, another preview has landed on the Web, this time featuring all the principals on the track. In the clip, which first appeared on rap website HipHopConnection.com, West and company appear in some pretty gory scenes. ‘Ye raps alongside a lifeless body, spitting the words to his rhymes while trying to romance a pasty corpse. West is stationed on a satin-lined bed and sporting a dress shirt unbuttoned down to his navel. Next to him are two female bodies that appear to represent the dead. As Kanye kicks his rhymes, he makes his move on one and grabs her lifeless arm to push her to get frisky with the second body. In the last preview, Ross was seen devouring a slab of meat while dressed in a red velvet smoking jacket. In the new clip, the rapper is seen puffing on a cigar as he sits in a chair with three hanged bodies surrounding him. There’s no performance shot of the Miami MC. Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj’s spots are brief, featuring both stars rapping, Hov in a black tuxedo with dark shades and the female lyricist in a sheer black number while rhyming on all fours. The clip opens with a shot of a shadowy figure in silhouette entering a darkened hallway as the names Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross flash across the screen. A disfigured face then pops up as the driving bass thumps to begin the song. Are you looking forward to the “Monster” video? Let us know in the comments! Nicki Minaj Is ‘Culmination Of All’ Femcees, MC Lyte Says

Veteran female rapper says instead of Lil’ Kim, pop acts like Fergie, Gwen Stefani ‘really need to be worried’ about the Barbie. By Hillary Crosley Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Veteran female rapper MC Lyte stopped by this year’s “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” where Young Money star Nicki Minaj rocked the stage over the weekend. So we asked Lyte to weigh in on hip-hop’s newest starlet from a historical perspective. “I look at her as a culmination of all of the female hip-hop MCs that are and were, with her spice all on top of it,” Lyte said. “She’s uniquely different for this time because she’s totally equipped business-wise. She understands what it is to be different in your approach. I love it. When I listen to her I feel like I’m on a voyage, you never know exactly where she’s going to end up.” When asked who Nicki may have used as an example in crafting her style, Lyte mentioned a certain Virginia native. “When I think of style, I’d like to think of Missy because when I first heard Missy and all those little noises she would make, I’d be like, ‘What the hell? Wow, I want to learn how to do that,’ ” Lyte said. “And now it feels like Nicki on steroids. She’s thoroughly entertaining.” Of course, no hip-hop interview would be complete without the inevitable Nicki vs. Lil’ Kim question but Lyte had a surprising response. “I could easily say that it’s unfortunate but I’ve had my dis wars and battles back in the days; I battled Antoinette ,” Lyte recalled. “I think, literally, the difference between us was I had a couple of records out before [Antoinette] and made a couple of fans before she did, that was the only thing that separated us in terms of who was going to win the battle. “With regards to Nicki and Kim, right now, there’s room for everyone,” she continued. “Those who really need to be worried by Nicki’s record is Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado … Nicki is coming out to win … and she’s not thinking of the block or the city so she’s more able to handle what it takes right now to be an international star.” Lyte said that there’s no real reason for the war of words between Kim and Nicki other than the competitive spirit. “It’s what an MC thrives on, and you cannot tell me that a female MC listening to them doesn’t want to spit a verse themselves, because it’s that competitive nature that hip-hop brings,” Lyte smiled. “It’s the art, people love to do it.” What do think of MC Lyte’s take on the Nicki vs. Kim debate? Heart, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Rock ‘VH1 Divas’

Acclaimed duo team up with newcomers for ‘Crazy on You.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Grace Potter Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Decades of rocking out have not faded Heart’s spark. The duo shut things down at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” when they played their breakout 1976 single “Crazy on You.” This time, the ladies got some back up from relative newbies Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, with Potter splitting vocal duties with Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson. Nancy Wilson kicked off the set with a nimble solo that scored excited cheers from the soldiers. The screams reached a fever pitch when the bass line from “Crazy” rattled in the speakers, and the service members went wild. Sporting a long dark coat with a generous silver pendant dangling from her neck, Ann helmed the first verse before strutting down the runway to the center of the crowd for the chorus. Potter, who was manning the keys, chimed in for the second verse, later picking up her mic and meeting Ann in the middle of the stage. Although she wasn’t center stage, Nancy still commanded attention, leaping in the air as she clutched her guitar. Potter and Ann closed out the performance by belting the last notes in unison. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) Potter and crew also got a chance to run the stage solo. After an introduction from “Jersey Shore” residents Snooki and The Situation , the band cranked out their heady single “Paris (Ooh La La).” Despite her shimmery cocktail dress, Potter looked every bit the vintage rock bad girl, strumming her guitar, whipping her hair and wailing like she’s been at this since forever. The bassist and another guitarist plucked fiery solos, and Potter finished the song at the edge of stage, belting directly to the enthused service members. After a few final whips of her mane, Potter wrapped up the song with a sultry grin and strutted back toward her band. The ladies added some rock-and-roll flair to a night packed with pop hitmakers like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson. Patriotic looks and retro styles were also big at military tribute. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj at “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” Photo: MTV News Stars didn’t shy away from bold fashion choices when it came to supporting soldiers at the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” event. Celebs hit the stage and the red carpet in looks that either paid homage to the military’s legacy or rocked the soldiers’ worlds with eye-popping outfits. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) Nicki Minaj piled on the color in an orange-and-blue-hued, long-sleeved mini-dress, turquoise tights and fringe-covered platforms when she rocked the stage. She finished off the look with a puffy trapezoidal white wig with pink tips and a large beaded necklace. Snooki topped off her snug little black dress with an officer’s cap that she brightened up with a pink bow. Katy Perry went for ’40s glam in many of looks, like her crimson sequined gown with a sweetheart neckline and daring thigh-high slit. She upped the vamp factor with long red gloves and a diamond cuff. Perry also got patriotic with a tube top emblazoned with the American flag paired with sparkly hot pants. Keri Hilson, Perry and Jennifer Nettles took it back with their World War II-era style in the show’s opener, swishing about in spangled gold and white mini-dresses and military hats. Grace Potter went runway-chic with a tiny silvery beaded number adorned with long fringe that showed off her long legs. The Situation got spiffed up his typically casual look with a vest and black button-down shirt with paisley accents, paired with grey jeans and black kicks. Supermodel Marisa Miller was suitably dressed for the occasion in an olive drab jumpsuit nipped at the waist with a wide belt, a look she softened with a wavy retro hairstyle. Hilson rocked both the stage and red carpet and an all-black outfit she enlivened with glitzy accents like sparkly lapels, studded jewelry and bedazzled booties. ‘VH1 Divas’ Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj ‘Just Want To Have Fun’

Cyndi Lauper’s colorful classic perfectly suits the Perry’s and Minaj’s bright aesthetic. By Aly Semigran Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry perform for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Cyndi Lauper wasn’t kidding when she boasted that “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 1983. On Sunday’s “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” 27 years after Lauper’s declaration, two of this generation’s fiercest female voices took over the oft-covered classic pop ode with a new kind of women’s lib. Nicki Minaj (who has already clearly drawn inspiration from Lauper, evident here with her puffy, white wig, colorful miniskirt, sky-high heels and blue tights) and Katy Perry (who opted to sport sexy camouflage garb, paired with a military-inspired hat) performed a slightly more sped-up, rock-and-roll version (though the tune’s synthesized chords were still very much present). (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) The Young Money MC — who also rocked the stage solo — not only aesthetically resembled Lauper with her off-kilter fashion sense, but vocally as well. (Earlier in the night, Perry had gone even more retro when she joined Keri Hilson and Jennifer Nettles for a cover of the World War II-era hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”) The stage set-up, complete with a live band and a big screen showing images that like, totally channeled the ’80s, gave Minaj and Perry plenty of room to run around and, yes, have plenty of fun. With a display of sisterhood that included a strut down the catwalk, both girls (as well as a gaggle of colorfully dressed dancers shimmying behind them) fulfilled Lauper’s promise. The two hugged after the performance and gave the love right back to the audience, as Minaj cried, “Salute the troops!” to which Perry immediately complied. Nicki Minaj Drives Soldiers Crazy At ‘VH1 Divas’

Young Money MC performs ‘Moment 4 Life,’ ‘Right Thru Me’ and ‘Roman’s Revenge.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj performs during “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images At the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Nicki Minaj paid tribute to America’s soldiers the best way she knows how: get them fired up with a body-rocking performance. Sporting a fluffy white wig, turquoise tights, towering heels and a super-snug, orange and blue mini-dress, Minaj kicked things off with “Moment 4 Life,” an album cut from her chart-busting debut Pink Friday. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) “In this very moment, I’m king/ In this very moment, I slay Goliath with a sling,” Minaj spit as she strutted across the darkly illuminated stage with her signature flirty yet street swagger. Service members hoisted camera phones in the air as the beat pumped through the massive, tricked-out aircraft hangar. The track was a fitting way to start the performance, as the Young Money queen talks about savoring the moment, rhyming, “Put ya drinks up/ It’s a celebration every time we link up. Greatness is what we on the brink of.” Then a roar erupted from the crowd of soldiers and the flicker of flashing lights picked up as the bass line from Minaj’s hit “Right Thru Me” dropped. Four female dancers in glittery cropped pants and black T-shirts appeared to back up the rapper. Later, four guys joined the crew to bust a few moves. Minaj switched up the track for the soldiers slightly, by holding one of the last notes of the song as she strolled down the runway. The Young Money lyricist, who also teamed up with Katy Perry for a playful cover of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” closed the set on a frenzied note with her rowdy Eminem collabo “Roman’s Revenge.” Trading bars with the assistance of her hypeman, Minaj punched up the set with garish grimaces and struck loopy poses as she tottered about in her stilettos. “I love you guys, thank you!” she proclaimed at the end of the set, and the soldiers sent her off with a salute of their own, chanting, “Nicki! Nicki!” What did you think of Nicki Minaj’s performance at “VH1 Divas”? Let u know in the comments! Kanye West Tops Billboard Chart With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Nicki Minaj a strong #2 with her debut, Pink Friday. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images It’s an understatement to say that Kanye West is on a roll. As predicted, ‘Ye’s fifth album, the hotly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , will easily top the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, after selling a robust 496,000 copies, giving the Chicago MC his fourth #1 debut in a row. Just behind him at #2 is the debut from Young Money First Lady Nicki Minaj , who moved 375,000 copies of her Pink Friday . The pair of rap superstars lead a parade of new faces in the top 10 during the biggest week of new album releases of the year, which helped propel the top 11 discs past the six-figure mark. After nearly two years of mixtapes and guest spots on other artists’ songs for Minaj and months of leaking tracks by West, the two friendly rivals prove that the traditional way of setting up albums may officially be a thing of the past. In fact, Minaj’s total is one of the highest ever for a female MC’s debut, falling just short of the 423,000 copies former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill scored in 1998 with her smash The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Justin Bieber ‘s Walmart-exclusive acoustic disc, My Worlds Acoustic, comes in at #7 on sales of 115,000, with My Chemical Romance just behind at #8 (112,000) with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Also breaking into the top 10 is Ne-Yo , whose Libra Scale hit #9, as the in-demand singer/songwriter sold just a shade under MCR. The rest of the top 10 features Susan Boyle at #3 with The Gift (263,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Speak Now, which moves up five spots to #4 as sales picked up by 64 percent after five weeks in stores to 241,000, putting her within spitting distance of 2 million albums sold. Jackie Evancho ‘s O Holy Night EP falls a few spots to #5 (142,000), while Rihanna slips three to #6 with her latest, Loud (141,000), and the cast of “Glee” round out the top 10 with their first Christmas collection (108,000). Kid Rock ‘s time in the top 10 was brief, as his classic-rock-influenced Born Free falls six spots to #11 in week two on sales of 104,000, mirroring the tumble by popera singer Josh Groban , who slips eight slots to #12 in the second week for his latest, Illuminations (99,000). Despite a digital hit with “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha ‘s second album of 2010, Cannibal, has a modest debut, landing at #15 (74,000), even as fellow pop provocateur Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream shoots up 18 slots to #16 (72,000) as sales increased by nearly 180 percent from the previous week. The soundtrack to the Christina Aguilera/Cher movie “Burlesque” matches the so-so box-office returns of that hoofing drama, with a soft debut at #18 (63,000), and G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks has to settle for a #26 bow (44,000) for his H.F.M.2 (Hunger for More 2). It was also not stellar news for a pair of greatest-hits collections, as Pink ‘s Greatest Hits So Far! drops 14 spots to #29 in its second week (41,000), and Jay-Z ‘s Hits Collection sneaks into the top 50 at #43 (28,000) in its chart debut. Things are also looking grim for season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze after his major-label debut, Live It Up, craters in its second week, nose-diving 74 slots to #93 as sales trailed off by 63 percent. DeWyze scored the worst-selling debut figures ever by an “Idol” winner last week. Over on the iTunes albums chart, it was mostly the same story, as Kanye took the #1 spot, followed by Nicki, the “Burlesque” soundtrack, the “Glee” Christmas album, Ke$ha, Rihanna, MCR, Swift, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More and Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown. Perry still ruled on the iTunes single tally with her latest single, “Firework,” with Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” just behind, Ke$ha holding at #3 with “We R” and the Black Eyed Peas hitting #4 with “The Time (Dirty Bit).” iTunes doesn’t provide detailed sales results, but Rihanna was probably happy with locking down #5 with “What’s My Name?” and #7 with “Only Girl (in the World),” with Bruno Mars slipping in at #6 with “Grenade.” Rounding out the top 10 was Mars again at #8 with “Just the Way You Are,” Far East Movement with “Like a G6” and Trey Songz with “Bottoms Up.” The battle for the top will start all over again next week with the arrival of the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The Beginning , as well as new albums from Chrisette Michele , Jazmine Sullivan , Tim McGraw and Flo Rida , as well as yet another “Glee” cast disc. Nicki Minaj Vents About Being A Female MC In ‘My Time Now’ Preview

Documentary premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV If there’s one thing Nicki Minaj does not do in her MTV documentary “My Time Now,” it’s hold back. The Pink Friday MC has skyrocketed to the upper echelons of the hip-hop game with a flow that swings from beastly to baby-voiced and a boldly wacky-yet-vampy persona. In the doc, the pink-wigged spitter reveals that her growing success is not just the result of her stacks of scene-stealing features, but also her insistence on being regarded as a musical force to be reckoned with. “I put quality in what I do. I spend time and I spend energy and I spend effort and I spend everything I have, every fiber of my being, to give people quality,” Minaj says in a teaser clip from the forthcoming film, hanging out in a semi-casual outfit, sporting a pale-blue T-shirt and towering Pepto-Bismol-hued wig. “So if I turn up to a photo shoot and you got a $50 clothes budget and some sliced pickles on a mother—-in’ board, you know what? No. I am gonna leave. “Is that wrong? For wanting more for myself, wanting people to treat me with respect?” she continues. “But you know what? Next time, they know better. But had I accepted the pickle juice, I would be drinking pickle juice right now.” Minaj also analyzes the double standards she says plague the entertainment industry, explaining that a confident behind-the-scenes manner will often land women unfavorable and dismissive labels. “When I am assertive, I’m a bitch. When a man is assertive, he’s a boss. He bossed up. No negative connotation behind ‘bossed up.’ But lots of negative connotation behind being a bitch. Donald Trump can say, ‘You’re fired.’ Let Martha Stewart run her company the same way and be the same way. [People will say] ‘F—ing old evil bitch!’ But Donald Trump, he gets to hang out with young bitches and have 50 different wives and just be cool. ‘Oh, Donald, we love you, Donald Trump!’ ” Minaj quips theatrically. The “Roman’s Revenge” spitter further maintains that, to make it as a superstar, aspiring female artists are expected to juggle a superhuman amount of multitasking. “When you’re a girl, you have to be everything. You have to be dope at what you do but you have to be super sweet and you have to be sexy and you have to be this, you have to be that, and you have to be nice,” she says. “It’s like, ‘I can’t be all those things at once. I’m a human being.’ ” The soliloquy is another moment in which the MC candidly provides insight, not only into her experience as a lyricist careening toward fame, but her personal views and perspectives as well. In addition to trailing the lyricist as she lays down her debut album, cameras follow the hitmaker on an emotional visit to her native Trinidad and catch Minaj as she opens up about her late grandmother . “They’re gonna meet Onika,” she recently told MTV News about the doc. “Everybody sees Nicki Minaj; they’re gonna meet Onika. They’re gonna hear my story, and it’s such an inspirational story, which I never really wanted to tell. ‘Cause everyone always feels like you don’t want people to know too much. But when I saw what [MTV and production company @radical.media] did, I thought, ‘People need to see this.’ It reminds you that everyone always feels like this is it, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like that’s what the doc says at the end.” Don’t miss the documentary “Nicki Minaj: My Time Now,” premiering Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
