Watch The Throne Tracks: Tastemakers Pick Their Faves

From ‘Otis’ to ‘New Day,’ experts weigh in on which Jay-Z and Kanye joint stands out from the rest. By Rob Markman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage From upbeat dancefloor bangers to low-key concept songs, there is quite a bit of variety on Watch the Throne . On the day of its digital release last week, Kanye West and Jay-Z ‘s tag-team album saw a handful of its tracks become trending topics on Twitter. “No Church in the Wild,” “Gotta Have It” and “Who Gon Stop Me” all stood as fan favorites, at least initially, but it seems that no matter who you ask, everyone has a different favorite from WTT . “My favorite record off the album is ‘New Day,’ produced by the RZA,” said New York’s Power 105 morning-show host Charlamagne Tha God. “The record about Kanye and Jay rapping about their unborn sons, that’s ill to me.” Read what the critics thought of Watch the Throne . On “New Day” Kanye express his life’s regrets in a lyrical letter to his future son. Over RZA’s twinkling keys and somber soul sample ‘Ye raps, “And I’ll never let my son have an ego/ He’ll be nice to everyone wherever we go/ I mean, I might even make him be Republican/ So everybody knows he loves white people.” Jay takes a similar approach and spits a verse to his unborn, amid persistent rumors that he and wife Beyonc#233; are planning to have a child. AllHipHop CEO Chuck Creekmur puts the energetic “Who Gon Stop” at the top of his list. The track samples Flux Pavilion’s dub-step track “I Can’t Stop.” The chest-pounding album cut finds Hov and Yeezy putting their wealth on full display, despite facing insurmountable odds, with bars like, “Beat the odds, bet the feds/ It wouldn’t be wise to bet against the kid/ State me broke, I bet I get rich/ Night shift ’66.” See what radio DJs thought of WTT ‘s unconventional radio rollout. ” ‘Dudes in Paris’ is awesome,” Jeff Rosenthal, from the sketch comedy team It’s the Real, said, censoring the song’s real title, “N—as in Paris.” He is particularly impressed by the song’s instrumental which was constructed by Kanye and newcomer Hit-Boy. “The beat is insane, just everything about it.” What is your favorite Watch the Throne track? Did Lil Wayne Steal The Beat For “She Will?”

Read the original:

The sample sleuths at HipHopIsread have apparently unearthed the sample to Lil Wayne’s latest single, “She Will.” The haunting melody, given a gangster underbelly by producer T-Minus, appears to have come courtesy of Jim Guthrie’s “The Cloud.” Listen to both tracks and tell us what you think. Let’s just hope that Weezy got the sample cleared because Guthrie seems surprised by it in this tweet: Is Weezy about to get sued again? Rapper Gramz may also have something to say about it (unless he also sampled Guthrie). World Youth Day 2012 in Spain  begins today.  I attended these events regularly throughout my youth and found them to be edifying to my soul. Catholic pilgrims from across the world flocked to Madrid Monday for a youth festival expected to draw more than a million faithful, with the highlight an open-air mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. The World Youth Day festival, which runs from Tuesday to Sunday, has been criticized, however, for the costs involved in welcoming the head of the Roman Catholic Church as Spain struggles with an economic crisis. Gospel Stars & Pastors Send Love Via Twitter To The Family Of Pastor Zachery Tims [VIDEO] But WYD officials say most of the costs would be covered by the pilgrims themselves — arriving from 193 countries — and the event would be a massive tourist boost for the city of Madrid. A huge stage has been erected at the central Plaza de Cibeles, one of Madrid’s most emblematic sites. The square will host three of the four main events during WYD: the opening mass on Tuesday, the papal welcome two days later and the Stations of the Cross ceremony on Friday. On Saturday, hundreds of thousands will be entertained by pop groups at the Cuatro Vientos air base southwest of the capital, where the pope holds a “Prayer Vigil” in the evening. The young pilgrims will spend the night under the stars at the air base with duvets and rugs on a vast esplanade the size of 48 football fields. The 84-year-old pontiff celebrates mass there on Sunday morning at a white altar almost 200 metres (660 feet) long in front of a wave-shaped stage and under a giant parasol “tree”, made of interwoven golden rods that will protect him from Madrid’s brutal August heat. Madrid’s airport was bustling Monday with tens of thousands of excited young pilgrims carrying large backpacks, studying maps to find out how to get to the churches or schools where they will be staying, or waiting for buses.Around 80 percent of the roughly 450,000 people who have registered for the event have already arrived in other Spanish cities and were expected to make the trip to Madrid on Monday or Tuesday, organizers said. Is Sexy Fright Night Star Sandra Vergara REALLY Sofia Vergara’s Sister? [PICS]

They’re both Columbian, they’re both Vergaras, and they’re both super sexy. There’s no doubt about that. But according to Sofia Vergara , boobalicious star of Modern Family , the woman whom reporters have been calling her “younger sister,” Fright Night star Sandra Vergara (standing at left), isn’t really her sibling. As it turns out, Sandra is actually Sofia’s cousin, but the two were raised together- Sandra was taken in by Sofia’s parents at an early age. Sofia’s upset that Sandra isn’t making the distinction in the press, basically accusing her soon-to-be-estranged relative of riding her big, round, delicious coconuts- er, coattails- to stardom. Sandra has a sexy role in the upcoming vampire remake Fright Night, including several scenes where she strips to her bra and one Colum-believable thong shot as she puts on a black robe. Could she be purposefully playing up the Sofia commection to get more publicity for her role? Or is Sofia simply failing to show the adopted-sisterly love? Skin Central doesn’t really care, as long as these addictive Columbian exports keep showing up on our computer screens! Play com-bare and contr-ass with Sandra Vergara and Sofia Vergara after the jump!

Kings Of Leon Doc Director Unfazed By Band’s Drama

‘They’re family,’ ‘Talihina Sky’ helmer Stephen Mitchell says, confident that Kings will regroup after canceling U.S. tour. By James Montgomery Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon Photo: Theo Wargo/ WireImage For all the unedited, un-sober moments in the Kings of Leon ‘s “Talihina Sky” documentary (and there are a lot of them), none stands out quite like frontman Caleb Followill’s bleary-eyed, whiskey-and-marijuana-soaked confessional, which unspools toward the end of the film and is a jaw-dropper, to say the very least. When the film premiered back in April, the scene stuck in most folks’ memories because it was so unfiltered — Followill makes no attempt to hide the fact that he’s rifling through inebriants, which is noteworthy since he and his bandmates executive-produced the film and surely had final say over what made the cut and what didn’t. But given the events of the past few weeks, as the Kings canceled their U.S. tour after Followill’s bizarre (and, many seem to think, drunken ) onstage behavior at a show in Dallas , the footage takes on a decidedly darker tone … and hints that perhaps the frontman’s problems go much deeper than “exhaustion,” as the band claimed in their cancellation statement. So, with “Talihina” set to premiere August 21 on Showtime, MTV Radio spoke to its director, Stephen Mitchell, about that notorious scene and whether he now regrets keeping it in the film. “No, and for the record, I might have been more drunk and stoned than Caleb during that interview,” Mitchell laughed. “That was a night he and I sat down, actually it was during the Only By the Night sessions, and after working in the studio all day, he said, ‘I want you to come over to the house and let’s sit down.’ … I think it was an amazing conversation, and I think there’s a lot of the film that, looking back, [I] have regrets about showing this or doing that. We made our decisions a while ago and we’re sticking to them and living with them. “But sure, they’re my friends, and I care about them, and a lot of this is hard for me to watch and I’m sure it’s very hard for them to watch too,” he added. “So, I guess the only thing I can say is we put the honesty out there and hopefully people at least respect the boys for not bullsh—ing them.” Mitchell — who has known the Followills since the early 2000s, when they were first working toward a record contract in Nashville — said that while he hasn’t spoken to the band since they scrapped their tour, he’s not worried about their future. Nor did he find the reaction of Caleb’s brother Jared (who took his brother to task on Twitter following the Dallas show) to be anything out of the ordinary. After all, this is a band of brothers — and a cousin — first and foremost. “That’s the way they always were. Listen, I wasn’t down there, I haven’t even had a chance to talk to the guys yet … about what the heck happened. But I think some of the draw to these guys is that they are brothers and cousins; there’s a magnetism to that,” he said. “They say anything and everything to each other, and it is how they sort of work things out internally; they’re very vocal. And I had to learn a long time ago that they’re not yelling at each other, they’re just communicating, and it’s loud. And sometimes the stuff they say to each other … you’ve got to have some thick skin to be walking around with those guys.” Mitchell said that it’s that familial bond that has helped them through tough times in the past … and will undoubtedly help them navigate through their current drama too. “It’s a fabric of the band, the roots of the band, they’re family, and I think that’s a reason that they’ve been able to find a common ground to stick together and make five albums over, what, eight-plus years?” he said. “That’s really hard to do. There’s not many bands making two albums, let alone five, during that time … and I’m not a band spokesperson, I can’t speak for them, they make the great music, but I believe in them and I think the family side of it will be the same reason we end up seeing more great shows and hearing more great albums from them in the future.”

Lady Gaga: Straight, No Chaser

We observe Gaga in her natural habitat, with a good bottle of whiskey, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery What is Lady Gaga’s blood doing on the floor? We’ll find out soon … Photo: James Montgomery/MTV News Lady Gaga is sitting down, which is probably a good thing, considering she’s wearing 6-inch heels and has spent roughly seven hours drinking whiskey with dudes who look like they were roadies for Bang Tango . Drinking wasn’t the only thing she did, of course. She also danced, vamped, sang, bled and underwent more costume changes than Evander Berry Wall — all over the span of one very long day on one very big soundstage in New York City. I’m not allowed to write about exactly what she was shooting (at least not yet), but suffice it to say, Gaga certainly deserved a few minutes of rest. Especially since she had spent the first part of the day filming a wearing an outfit that could only be described as “houndstooth overdrive.” And yet, throughout the day, as the top-secret shoot went on and on, I never heard her complain — not even close. At one point, during a performance setup, when the director asked if she’d be willing to film another take, she joked, “My voice can only last for another hour and a half … the rest of me can go all night.” Everyone laughed, and not just because it was a funny line. There was an air of astonishment mixed in too. Simply put, no one seemed to believe that a star of this caliber would be this willing to work. And then work some more. While it was certainly amazing to watch Gaga come to life when the camera was rolling, her work ethic isn’t exactly breaking news. In a way, it was even more fascinating to observe her in the moments when it wasn’t. Last year, I followed her every step at the Video Music Awards and discovered that, beneath the 35 pounds of Argentinean beef, she was actually a pretty normal person. That was only amplified Monday, on this soundstage in New York, in the rare moments she wasn’t wowing everyone in attendance. Surrounded by her closest friends — all of whom were extras in the shoot, and some of whom came dressed in their Steel Panther finery — she was decidedly down-to-earth. Shockingly average, even. She cracked jokes, held hands, poured drinks. She danced and cooed with her old friend Lady Starlight while “Heavy Metal Lover,” a standout track on her Born This Way album, blared overhead. She whooped for joy whenever someone she hadn’t seen in a while (and given her schedule, that was pretty much everybody ) appeared on set. In fact, she seemed very much like every 25-year-old you’d meet, despite all evidence to the contrary. Getting to be a fly on the wall is certainly one of the perks of this job; it allows you to see the mega-famous at their least guarded — for better or (as is sometimes the case) much worse. But it’s the few instances I’ve been able to hover around Gaga’s inner circle that remain the most revelatory, mostly because, as I wrote last year, her public persona is somewhere along the lines of “a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses.” To see her unwind with her pals, well, let’s just say it’s the kind of thing you don’t forget, mostly because it’s the most normal thing imaginable. Which, given pretty much everything you think you know about her, is downright unimaginable. So while I can’t tell you what I watched being filmed, I can tell you that Lady Gaga enjoys Jameson and has excellent comedic timing. And that told me more about her than any of her videos ever could. To a certain extent, we all think we know who Gaga is, even if that’s not really the case. At ease, with a glass of strong booze, enveloped by her confidants — that’s the girl few of us get to meet, which is a shame. She seems like a really fun person to hang out with. Katy Perry Sets Singles Record With ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’

Perry breaks Billboard Mainstream Top 40 record following her nine VMA nominations for tracks from Teenage Dream. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage It took her a bit longer than expected, but Katy Perry’s persistence and the inescapable, saxophone-bleating 1980s vibe of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” were just too much for music fans to resist. Perry, who is nominated for a leading nine Moonmen at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards , finally snagged the record as the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to achieve the feat, thanks to “Friday Night” bumping up one spot to #1 this week. “Friday Night” joins the other chart-toppers from Perry’s Dream album, which include the title track, “California Gurls,” “Firework” and “E.T.” The record puts her in pretty impressive company, landing Perry just ahead of Lady Gaga ( The Fame ) and Justin Timberlake ( FutureSex/LoveSounds, whose albums yielded four #1s apiece. “Friday Night” also broke some other new ground, setting the high watermark for most weekly plays in the chart’s history (12,468), blowing past the old record, which she also held with “E.T.” (12,361). Even more impressive, the five singles from Dream account for five of the six songs with the chart’s highest-ever weekly spin totals, with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” acting as the spoiler at #4 with 12,107. The next potential record to fall could be the biggie Perry’s been waiting for. She’s still looking to become just the second artist ever to mark five #1 singles from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100, a mark held by Michael Jackson’s Bad . She’s got four #1s already and “Friday” moved up from 3 to 2 on last week’s chart, so it could happen. The Drew Barrymore-directed vid features a ton of up-and-coming-celeb cameos, from Donald Glover to Miranda Cosgrove. MTV News recently caught up with “iCarly” herself , and she told us the highlight of that very fun shoot was getting to work with Barrymore. “I had a great time,” Cosgrove said. “I’ve been watching Drew Barrymore movies ever since I was really little, so I was nervous to meet her.” Once on set, though, Cosgrove got over any nervousness about working with one of her biggest role models. “She’s really like your best friend,” Cosgrove said.
