2010 ESPY Awards Honor Kobe, Landon And Lindsey, Spoof LeBron

Host Seth Myers and others skewer sports oddities from James’ special to Paul the octopus. By Kyle Anderson Landon Donovan at the ESPY Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The worlds of sports, movies, music and television came together under one roof on Wednesday, the quietest sports day of the year, for ESPN’s annual ESPY Awards. Dozens of stars — including Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant, American World Cup hero Landon Donovan, New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn — gathered at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for a night of sports highlights and wacky comedy, orchestrated by host Seth Myers. Bryant, Donovan, Brees and Vonn each won some of the night’s biggest awards. Kobe, fresh off the Lakers’ latest championship and his second Finals MVP, scored the prize for Best NBA Player. Donovan won two trophies, one each for Best MLS Player and Best Moment in Sports (his game-winning goal against Algeria in the World Cup beat out the New Orleans’ Saints Super Bowl victory, Phil Mickelson’s win at the 2009 Masters and Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette’s performance at the Winter Olympics). Brees was voted Best Male Athlete, Best NFL Player and Best Championship Performance, while Vonn took home the prizes for Best Female Athlete and Best Female Olympian. Much of the humor during the evening — provided by the likes of Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Andy Samberg, Tracy Morgan, Zac Efron, Mark Wahlberg and Luke Wilson — was directed at LeBron James (who was also in attendance) and his recent one-hour special, “The Decision,” which ESPN aired last week. “Did it really need to be an hour?” Myers asked. “Somebody time me: ‘Miami.’ How long did that take? A second!” The 2010 FIFA World Cup was also the source of much humor. Ferrell came out for some vuvuzela-related jokes and Samberg appeared on the show as Paul, the German octopus who correctly predicted the winners of a handful of matches. But the highlight of the night was the surprise award given to President Barack Obama. His presence in the building was kept a secret, but he received a standing ovation when he approached the stage to accept his Lifetime Achievement ESPY, given for his “contributions and commitment to American sport.” What was your favorite moment from the 2010 ESPY Awards? ‘Eclipse’ Premiere: Xavier Samuel Drew Inspiration From ‘Wild Things’

Australian actor thought about the Denise Richards movie when emerging from the water as Riley. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Xavier Samuels at the “Eclipse” premiere Thursday Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In trailers and clips, fans have already been teased with what it will look like when Riley and the army of newborn vamps emerge from the water, on their way to the final battle in “Eclipse.” Australian up-and-comer Xavier Samuel , who plays Riley, new the image would be dramatic, and he had a very interesting movie reference in mind as he got into character for that particular scene. “Well, I’m lucky it was kind of covered the first night at drama school,” he joked to MTV News at the red-carpet premiere of “Eclipse” in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “Let me say a large source of inspiration for that scene was Denise Richards in ‘Wild Things.’ ” Of course, movie buffs may point out that when Richards and Neve Campbell rise out of the pool in the 1998 movie, they’re actually referencing a scene in “Apocalypse Now,” but if it worked for Samuel, we won’t argue with him. And with “Eclipse” set to open on Wednesday (June 30), he said he now has a game plan for his next big Hollywood move. ” ‘Wild Things 5,’ ” he laughed when asked about his next project. “And hopefully that will continue on for a while.” Samuel said that there are few things in this world that would get him as hyped as the fans who had lined up for days outside Hollywood’s Nokia Theatre to catch a glimpse of their favorite “Twilight Saga” stars for the premiere . “I was really into Australian football when I was younger,” he said. “But I wasn’t writing posters or anything like that, but I can understand the degree of hysteria.” So, did he get any marriage proposal from any of the aforementioned fans? “I’ve only had one,” he revealed. “Not [married] yet, but I just thought I’d say, ‘Look let’s get to know each other. We should meet first, perhaps.’ Absolutely [I’d date a fan].” What other movie references have you seen in the “Twilight” movies? Talk about it in the comments. ‘Eclipse’ Stars Thank Twilighters For ‘Beyond Insane’ L.A. Premiere

‘This energy is always undeniable,’ Kristen Stewart tells MTV News on the black carpet. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images It’s not uncommon for fans of major franchises to devote several hours, days and weeks to the stories they hold so dear, but there’s something almost indescribable about the devotion of the “Twilight” fanbase — a devotion that was on full display Thursday night (June 24) at the world premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “This is beyond insane. It’s, like, ludicrous madness. You can’t describe something like this,” actor Justin Chon, who plays Eric in the “Twilight” series, told MTV News on the black carpet of the “Eclipse” premiere. “These are some of the most dedicated fans that you’ll find on planet Earth.” Sarah Clarke, who plays Bella’s mother Renee Dwyer in the “Twilight” films, echoed Chon’s sentiment: “You never get used to this. I think there’s an Elvis quality, you know?” Clarke pointed out that many of the fans in attendance had been camping outside the theater for almost a week just to make sure they were able to see all their favorite stars. To thank these fans, Peter Facinelli and some of his castmates paid a visit to the dedicated “Twilight” supporters earlier in the week. “A couple of us came down and signed some autographs for them, because they’ve been camping out for five days and we wanted to make sure the wait was worth it,” Facinelli said. “It’s humbling to have this much fan support. I definitely appreciate it, and I know that the cast does. We don’t take it for granted. This whole franchise has been successful because of those fans.” In addition to the numerous fans and “Twilight” castmembers themselves, many other notable Hollywood personalities and surprising celebs came out for the “Eclipse” premiere. Athletes like Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez and L.A. Lakers newcomer Ron Artest were two of the more unexpected celebrities in attendance, with Artest throwing his support behind Team Jacob and the rest of the wolf pack. Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, in contrast, declared her own status as a proud member of the Team Edward faithful. “I tried to meet [Robert Pattinson] last year, and I waited on line for an hour and a half to meet him, and just as I got to the front, he left,” Hewitt recalled of a previous opportunity to meet the hunky Edward Cullen in person. “I was so sad. But he didn’t mean it — he’s Edward!” Although she fully supports the sexy vampire, Hewitt said she has difficulty relating to Bella’s romantic dilemma. “[My love life] sometimes feels more complicated [than hers],” she said. “Nobody ever just says, ‘Can I bite you?’ And if they did, I’d be like, ‘Yes!’ And we could just move on with our lives, and it would be amazing!” One of the most anticipated personalities attending the “Eclipse” premiere was none other than “Twilight” author and mastermind Stephenie Meyer herself. “I’m so not used to this,” Meyer admitted when asked about the size and scope of the “Eclipse” premiere. “I only do this kind of thing once a year. The rest of the time, I am totally incognito. It’s nice to be the author, let me tell you. It’s so much easier than being the actor!” There’s no question that Meyer was able to navigate through the crowd with more anonymity than the film’s three leading actors, as Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart couldn’t travel from point A to point B without cheers and applause following them every step of the way. “This energy is always undeniable,” Stewart said of the crowd’s unbridled enthusiasm. “I feel like I’m one of them. I feel like we share the exact same passion for this thing, and it feels a little weird to be at the head of it, but it’s cool.” Lautner said that when he first stepped onto the red carpet, there was only one sensation going through his mind: amazement. “It’s absolutely incredible and so exciting,” he said. “It’s a little bit of pressure, because you definitely want to live up to their expectations, but at the same time, we luckily have the most supportive fans in the world. Sometimes, this is just like extra comfort.” “Anybody who says they’re tired of this is completely crazy,” Pattinson agreed with his co-star and onscreen romantic rival. “If I ever said that [I’m tired of this], someone just has to remind me of what I was doing before: sitting around doing nothing!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Adam Lambert Says Tour Will Only Be As Wild As His Audience

‘If I’m feeling a bunch of people viscerally wanting to grab at me, I’ll let them grab at me,’ singer says. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Adam Lambert is never one to censor himself, either onstage or during interviews, so when the unpredictable glam-pop star announced his first headlining tour, some expected he’d deliver a wild and raunchy rock-and-roll show. It turns out Lambert’s Glam Nation Tour , currently playing to packed venues across the United States, is a relatively family-friendly affair. MTV News caught up with the singer backstage at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square, where he shrugged off assumptions that his sold-out shows would not be suitable for grandma. “What did you expect, nudity?” he laughed. Although the choreography is no more suggestive than a Pussycat Dolls concert, Adam admitted that some nights are more outrageous than others. “Nothing’s as planned as people think. … I’m kind of fly by the seat of my pants,” Lambert told MTV News. “It’s like a mirror… and whatever the audience is throwing at you, you kind of reflect, and vice versa. If I’m feeling a bunch of people viscerally wanting to grab at me, I’ll let them grab at me, if I can reach them. … If there’s a cute boy in the audience, I met get a little …you know.” Energy from his band also inspires Adam to push boundaries. Explaining Tuesday night’s off-the-cuff face-licking with bassist Tommy Joe Ratliff, Lambert conceded, “I was feeling it. He had extra lip gloss on. It looked pretty. It grabbed my eye.” But no matter how revved up the “Idol” star gets — and no matter how many cute boys are cheering him on from the front row — he’s learned his limits since causing a stir by simulating oral sex onstage at the American Music Awards last year. “That’s for my bedroom.” Do you want Adam Lambert to let loose onstage, or would you rather he concentrated on singing? Share your opinions below. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Adam Lambert Related Photos Adam Lambert Brings His Glam Nation Tour To New York Related Artists Adam Lambert

Rabid Adam Lambert Fans Line Up 24 Hours Before New York Show

For Lambert, ‘I’d sleep on the sidewalk again,’ one fan says. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Scorching temperatures and puzzled looks from passersby could not keep Adam Lambert fans from lining up outside New York’s Nokia Theatre a full 24 hours in advance of his Glam Nation Tour stop. For Eileen Monahan, spending the night sleeping on a “disgusting” Times Square sidewalk in front of the venue was the only way to guarantee she had the best spot inside the general-admission concert. “I want to be up front,” insisted Monahan, before admitting, “[For Adam], I’d sleep here again.” While Monahan only trekked from the Bronx, many traveled thousands of miles to see their favorite artist rock New York City. Fans from Denmark, Venezuela, England, Japan and Singapore mingled with Georgia peaches, Connecticut natives and Californians, making Adam’s Glam Nation a truly international affair. Even Peru had a message for Adam, via superfan Lilli Becker. “Peru represent! We love you, baby! I have a llama for you,” exclaimed Becker, just in case Adam ever wants a ride over the Andes. Perhaps the most exotic fans on the Lambert line were the dudes. Brooklyn native Chris Leavitt fessed up that his lady was the one to convert him into a Glamily member initially, but now he’s excited to “glam out” with the best of them. (His homemade jeans — complete with hand-drawn dragon and space rocks — certainly spoke volumes.) Elsewhere, 17-year old Brooklyn boy Billy Tropea was stoked to make Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation his first concert experience ever. “His hair is friggin’ awesome. I really want his hair,” he said. “I’m very jealous.” Some of Adam’s more seasoned followers insist they haven’t been this gung-ho about a musician since the days of Beatlemania. “I was still stalking Paul McCartney for awhile. I was on his website all the time, but now … sorry, Paul. Adam’s taken your place,” said Claudia Cohill. Armed with bags of snacks, bottles of water, and enough homemade signs to keep office supply stores in business through 2020, fans passed the time by taking bathroom breaks at a nearby McDonalds and dishing about their favorite glamtastic performances (his sultry six-minute acoustic take on “Whole Lotta Love,” which he debuted on tour, seems to be #1 for most). As the mass of Lambert lovers stretched around the block toward West 45th street, fans promised each other there would be no shoving once the doors opened at 7 p.m. “We made friends with people [in line]. We like being fair. No cutting,” promised 20-year-old Melanie Pellegrino. But if any latecomers try to sneak their way up front, the early birds are ready to throw some ‘bows. “I’m willing to cut a bitch!” one joked. Lambert’s tour moves on to Connecticut and New Jersey after his sold-out shows in New York. Related Artists Adam Lambert

Michael Jackson’s Estate And AEG Will Pay For 2009 Memorial

$1.3 million will be donated to Los Angeles for permits, police and cleanup services. By Mawuse Ziegbe Michael Jackson’s memorial inside the Staples Center July 7, 2009 Photo: MTV News AEG and Michael Jackson’s estate have agreed to foot the bill for Jackson’s huge memorial in Los Angeles last year. The city incurred major costs handling the July 7 memorial at the Staples Center after the pop icon died last summer at age 50. AEG confirmed in a statement e-mailed to MTV News that the company and the estate of Michael Jackson will pay $1.3 million to the city of Los Angeles; $1 million will be donated to the city’s general fund, and another $300,000 will go to the Los Angeles Police Foundation. L.A. determined that the figure represents expenses for permits, police services and Sanitation Department and Transportation Department costs. AEG was behind the scheduled run of Jackson’s much-anticipated This Is It shows at London’s O2 arena, which the singer was preparing for when he died of cardiac arrest. The singer also rehearsed at the Staples Center before his death. According to the Los Angeles Times, a 2009 city report pegged the cost of the memorial at $3.2 million. AEG President and CEO Timothy J. Leiweke alleged that City Attorney Carmen Trutanich demanded $6 million last year to cover the memorial’s expenses, while Trutanich maintained he only requested between $2 million and $3 million, the paper reports. Jackson’s memorial was a star-studded event, attended by celebrities and fans alike. Mariah Carey, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, John Mayer and Stevie Wonder gave powerhouse performances, and luminaries like Smokey Robinson, Magic Johnson and the Reverend Al Sharpton paid tribute to the star. An estimated 17,000 fans were present inside the Staples Center and at the Nokia Theatre next door, where a viewing area was set up. Celebrate Michael Jackson’s legacy all next week as MTV News looks back at his life, his music and the death that shook the world one year ago.
