Bret Michaels Offers Advice To ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze

‘Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment,’ Poison frontman says backstage at the finale. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The only thing Lee DeWyze wanted to do in life is play music. Now that he’s the new American Idol , the former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that. He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour “Idol” finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — offered some sage career advice. Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox. “Here’s the thing: Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you’ll have a long career,” said Michaels, who was at the “Idol” finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart . “That’s really the truth. That’s what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], ‘I gotta do it my way,’ ” he said. “I also would tell him … make sure you love what you do. And don’t ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul.” What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments. Janet Jackson Sings ‘Nothing,’ Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘American Idol’

Singer wows ‘Idol’ viewers with back-to-back performances of new song ‘Nothing,’ followed by classic ‘Nasty.’ By Josh Wigler Janet Jackson Photo: MTV News As the season nine finale of “American Idol” drew close to the finish line, the crowd gathered at the Nokia Theatre and the viewers at home waited nervously for either single mom Crystal Bowersox or paint salesman Lee DeWyze to be crowned the winner. But even as their fates hung in the air, the rest of the season nine competitors flocked to the stage one last time to sing “Again,” the 1993 single from Janet Jackson’s fifth studio album, Janet. The former “Idol” hopefuls’ collective moment in the spotlight ended shortly as Jackson herself graced the stage for a moving rendition of her new song “Nothing,” recorded for the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too.” With her hair pulled back tight and her black dress flowing, Jackson proceeded to provide the audience with waves of heartfelt emotion as she sang: And the truth is that I realize/ Love is fading from your eyes/ Don’t know how it came to this/ But we can get it fixed tonight. Jackson’s sweet song didn’t stay sweet for long. As she finished her version of “Nothing,” the 44-year-old singer momentarily left the stage and was replaced by a host of male dancers wearing white shirts and black slacks. When she returned, Jackson’s dress was gone and replaced by a skintight black bodysuit, signaling the transition from the mournful beauty of “Nothing” to the fast-paced nitty-gritty of “Nasty,” Jackson’s second single from her third studio album, Control (1986). A light show of green lasers flocked the Nokia Theatre as Jackson moved aggressively against her fellow dancers, all of whom finished the performance sans shirts. Although significantly more clothed than her stagemates, Jackson was clearly just as thrilled as the dancers as she warmly waved and blew kisses to both the audience and the judges’ table at the end of her performance. Bret Michaels Performs On ‘American Idol’

Recovering rock star takes the stage with Casey James. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX After suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage in April, discovering a hole in his heart earlier this month and beating out Holly Robinson Peete on “The Celebrity Apprentice” on Sunday, one would think Bret Michaels had gone through enough over the past several weeks. Not so, apparently, as the Poison frontman surprised the masses yet again by appearing on Wednesday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” season-nine finale for an inspiring and rocking musical performance. The performance began as third-place finisher Casey James took the stage, slowly strumming his rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Audience anticipation quickly built to a fever pitch as it dawned on the Nokia Theatre crowd and the folks at home that Michaels was about to grace the stage. Sure enough, a healthy-looking Michaels appeared with guitar in hand, gradually making his way to stand side-by-side with the clearly enthused James. In light of Michaels’ recent health scares, the lyrics to “Every Rose” suddenly took on new meaning: “Though its been awhile now/ I can still feel so much pain/ Like a knife that cuts you, the wound heals/ But the scar, that scar remains.” But Michaels wasn’t dwelling on any scars of his own. Strumming along and singing as loudly and proudly as ever before, the rocking Poison musician more than held his own on the “American Idol” stage. In a night already filled with many unforgettable performances, Michaels’ appearance was undoubtedly one of the evening’s most powerful and uplifting moments. Lee DeWyze’s Friends Say He Has The ‘Momentum’ To Win ‘American Idol’

‘No matter what happens, he’s changed his life,’ one friend tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Photo: FOX Even Lee DeWyze’s friends and fans have to admit that the 24-year-old former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, got out-sung by his “American Idol” rival on Tuesday night’s final performance show. While Bowersox belted out strong versions of “Me and Bobby McGee” and an emotional “Up to the Mountain,” Lee seemed nervous and sometimes struggled to hit the notes on R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” and his potential coronation song, U2’s “Beautiful Day.” But momentum is a funny thing, and if there’s anything the soft-spoken DeWyze had going into the last sing-off, it was a head of steam. The judges appeared to turn his way late in the game after a few weeks of so-so performances from Bowersox, whose friends are, of course, also confident she’ll pull it out. Like MTV News’ “Idol” experts , Lee’s longtime friend Brian Friedopfer predicted that his pal would emerge triumphant at the end of Wednesday night’s (May 26) two-hour finale. “He’s going to win,” Friedopfer said. ” The Nokia [Theatre] is a different element for both the constants and the judges. Lee may have been a little nervous, considering the theater was filled with 7,000 people, but the judges didn’t hear what they think they did. I guarantee that if and when they watch it back, they’ll realize Lee did a fantastic job with the songs that were given to him, and America knows it. Lee DeWyze will be crowned the next American Idol tonight.” If there’s anyone in Mt. Prospect who has reason to grin with pride from ear to ear, it’s Dr. Pat Tedaldi-Monti. The dean of students at Prospect High School , which Lee attended from ninth grade until halfway through his senior year, said despite the singer’s off night, she’s confident he’ll win. “Lee had a bit of a rough night, and Crystal did very well, but we’re real confident that he’s going to be the next American Idol,” she said. When DeWyze left her school, the teen’s parting words were, “I’m going to be a rock star … and you [and my other teachers] are going to be in the front row, and I’m going to be playing a really big concert.” He’s almost there, and despite Bowersox’s good night, she thinks Lee is going to make that promise come true. “The next American Idol will be from Mt. Prospect,” she said. “He predicted it.” One of his oldest friends, Vince Ferrara, 26, agreed. “I still think he’s going to win,” said Ferrara, who’s known Lee for almost a decade. “I think he had a pretty good performance, and I didn’t agree with what the judges said, that he was pitchy. If anything, Crystal had the better song choices, and they suited her voice more. I still think he wins, because he has the momentum and he’s done so well for so many weeks.” And what if he does win? Ferrara will watch the finale at home with friends and plans to go to a local bar to celebrate the result. “If he wins, I might just have to start bawling,” he said. “Because it’s so unbelievable that he’s made it this far. No matter what happens, he’s changed his life. … It’s forever changed, and he’s touched so many people. It’s so moving.” Do you think Lee will win the “Idol” crown? Let us know in the comments!
