M.I.A. Admits ‘Born Free’ Video Copies Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’

‘Both our videos are road movies. We kill people, and they kill people,’ singer tells New York Times. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic She might not have many nice things to say about Lady Gaga lately, but M.I.A. freely admits that her controversial “Born Free” video took more than a little inspiration from Gaga. Like, way more than a little. “With our video, we were really copying ‘Telephone,’ ” M.I.A. told the New York Times Magazine in a feature set to run on Sunday (May 30). “Both our videos are road movies. We kill people, and they kill people. They start out in a prison, and we start out in a squat, hunting people down.” But the (sorta) pleasantries end there, as M.I.A. went on to land another jab against Gaga. “All I’ll say is, it’s upsetting when babies say ‘ga-ga’ now,” the British/Sri Lankan artist told the magazine. “It used to be innocent. Now, they’re calling her name.” She said she gets annoyed when LG is praised for her originality — saying she mostly borrows from ABBA — and positively livid when her rival is compared to Madonna. “You can’t really say that Gaga is culturally a change,” she said. “Madonna was truly unique.” Of course, in the same feature, M.I.A.’s pal — and “Born Free” director — Romain Gavras gets far nastier, joking to the Times ‘ Lynn Hirschberg that “Madonna was pretty. … Pop stars should be pretty.” M.I.A. explained that she and Gavras had originally intended to shoot the “Born Free” clip on the U.S.-Mexican border, but ultimately had to move production to Los Angeles because, as she put it, “Interscope won.” And she told Hirschberg that she purposely avoided showing the completed video to the folks at the label (to which both she and Gaga are signed) because “the Interscope lawyers will want to send [it] to a censorship board.” (Of course, Interscope head Jimmy Iovine told the Times that not only did he see the video, but that it “was more than fine with me. … I didn’t even have a blink.”) Building on that concept, M.I.A. said she’s planning a stage show based entirely on censorship, with the audience’s every move monitored and recorded, and individuals singled out and asked to leave if they violate certain rules. “I want to be like the government,” she said. “It could be interesting.” Which video do you prefer, Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” or M.I.A.’s “Born Free”? Tell us why in the comments. Related Artists M.I.A. Lady Gaga

‘American Idol’ Experts Say Lee DeWyze Will Beat Crystal Bowersox

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Crystal Climbs The Mountain

Lee DeWyze couldn’t reclaim the confidence he’d found last week. By Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s “American Idol” marked the beginning of the end of season nine, with Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze facing off in a three-round showdown. OK, it was less of a showdown and more of a beatdown, with Bowersox easily handing DeWyze his hat. Although Lee was the favorite going into this week, his newfound confidence must have been left at the door of the Nokia Theatre. (Even the mice at the Nokia Theatre had to have been saying to each other, “What’s this wimp’s problem tonight?”) In round one, each contestant reprised an old “Idol” hit, but the rule was that they were not allowed to sing it as well the second time. (Kidding. Except I’m not.) It turned into a battle of the gibberish, and the la-di-dahs of “The Boxer” lost out to the la-di-dahs of “Me and Bobby McGee” by a nose. Simon Fuller got to pick the songs in round two. DeWyze started R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” strong but got lost in the middle, and Bowersox sang “Black Velvet” with some grit but got lost on the stairs of the set. (Why couldn’t she find her way around Tuesday night? During her entrance from the audience she looked as though she was confused too.) Finally, round three was where Lee and Crystal each debuted what would be their first single should they win. With “Beautiful Day,” DeWyze told America he wants to be the lead singer of a U2 cover band. With “Up to the Mountain,” Crystal told America she wants to be the next American Idol. Will MamaSox’s stellar showing be enough to win her the crown? Will Lee’s triumphant top-three showing be fresh enough in voters’ minds to forgive the fact that he choked this week? Did you think Crystal’s message to Simon was a sweet sendoff or an awkward example of brownnosing? Leave a comment below. ‘American Idol’ Finale Preview: What Should The Top Two Sing?

Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze have one more shot to wow America — and we have just the songs. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX “American Idol” page staged find-the-next-superstar auditions in seven cities for the show’s ninth season, but producers could have saved a lot of time by heading straight to Chicago. It was in the Windy City that they discovered both Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze . Now the competition is down to just the two of these Midwestern natives — and they have only one more shot to win the hearts (and text messages) of America. On Tuesday night’s (May 25) performance finale, each singer will have the chance to sing three songs: two tunes are up to them — either new ones or faves from any point in the season — and one brand-new single penned especially for the occasion. Bowersox and DeWyze better make their choices good ones, because they probably won’t get a lot of help from the “Idol” original single, a song that each year strives for an over-the-top inspirational theme and almost always falls ear-gratingly shot. Remember 2007’s “This Is My Now”? Neither do we. Last year’s Kara DioGuardi-co-written tune, “No Boundaries,” for instance, contained lyrics hampered by mixed metaphor-itis (Mountains! Dreams! Bridges! Hurricanes!) and built toward an unwieldy chorus that not even talents like Kris Allen and Adam Lambert could pleasingly deliver. So it’s up to Bowersox and DeWyze to pick the right songs. Here’s what we’d like to hear them sing — one recycled tune, one fresh one — the songs that give them each the best chance to be crowned season-nine “Idol” champ Wednesday night. Crystal Bowersox MamaSox could return to either “Me and Bobby McGee” or “Long As I Can See the Light” and blow viewers away, but here’s why we favor the latter choice. The Creedence Clearwater Revival tune seems more calibrated for a “moment,” and we know how obsessed the judges are when it comes to such things. Randy Jackson called Bowersox “the truth” after her performance of the song back in March. Her vocals were sultry and soulful, and the presence of the backup singers allowed her to riff freely in the second half. Plus, we love the song’s message: “I won’t be losing my way, long as I can see the light.” When it comes to selecting a new song, we’ll return to our pick from last week, because the reasoning behind it is even more apt now. Bowersox needs to make clear that she can sing contemporary music. Her rendition last week of Melissa Etheridge’s “Come to My Window” was predictable and borderline uninteresting (as lovely as it sounded). Crystal needs to go in an unexpected direction and rework a hit single in a way that works for her style. The perfect “Idol”-winning song? Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”! Seriously. Lee DeWyze Last week’s stellar double bill of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” made one thing clear: This is anyone’s competition to win. And we’d urge DeWyze to bust out Skynyrd’s tune again if he hadn’t just done it. Instead, we suggest another go at “The Boxer.” Never mind that it was featured so prominently during his hometown-visit video package. It was his second-best performance of the season, and he can knock it out of the Nokia Theatre. For his other performance, we turn our attention back to Songs of the Cinema night earlier this month. In a surprising development, Prince’s “Purple Rain” landed on the approved song list, and then, even more surprisingly, no one performed it. And man, would it be killer in DeWyze’s hands! The 24-year-old has had his biggest successes with slow, expressive rock tunes. “Purple Rain” is just funky enough to mesh well with the DeWyze we’ve come to know while also showing us some welcome range. If the singer wants another “moment,” Prince’s hit is the way to go. Which songs do you want to hear from Crystal and Lee during the final performance night? Sound off in the comments! 50 Cent Announces The Invitation Tour Beginning May 28

Rapper kicks off 19-date tour in Cleveland. By Gil Kaufman 50 Cent Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images There’s been a bit of confusion about what 50 Cent’s next album, Black Magic, might sound like. After initially saying the record was inspired by dance beats he heard at a nightclub in Europe, the 50 explained that the disc will still be hip-hop, but with a twist. Fans might get a chance to hear what he’s talking about starting May 28, when 50 will launch The Invitation tour at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. The month-long, 19-date outing will take him across the country to mid-size theaters before winding up with a June 25 show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Though some people got it twisted when he initially said he was inspired by more uptempo dance music on the disc, which doesn’t have a release date yet, 50 quickly clarified what he meant. “I got a joint that I did that was real uptempo,” 50 told British DJ Tim Westwood back in March. “It’s a different type of vibe. It’s still 50 Cent. It’s official. If you heard the record, you’d feel different. My Black Magic album, I’ve been listening to different types of music. I just wanna create something that’s outta the box. I’m using different song formats. I’ll write a rap song in the sequence of a different kind of record. A traditional hip-hop record may have three 16-bar verses. To write it in a different formant instead of the way a traditional rap record is written, to experiment with different things, it’s still hip-hop music. It’s still 50 Cent content; it’s just written in a different way.” The dates for The Invitation tour are: 5/28 – Cleveland, OH @ Wolstein Center 5/29 – Detroit, MI @ Chene Park Riverfront Amphitheater 5/30 – Chicago, IL @ UIC Pavilion 6/1 – Denver, CO @ Fillmore Auditorium 6/3 – San Francisco, CA @ Warfield Theatre 6/4 – Los Angeles @ Club Nokia at L.A. Lady Gaga New York Magazine ‘Growing Up Gaga’ Cover

Lady Gaga tells throngs of impressionable young women ‘pop stars should not eat’ during her interview in this week’s New York magazine. Lady Gaga is a crustacean headdress wearing , Fame Monster warbling, glitter-encrusted force to be reckoned with. Yes. This much is true. She ( with the help of others ) crafted, and re-crafted, an image that recalls an art school Madonna 2.0 with recycled Bowie – lite tinges. The hybrid makes Katy Perry look lame and childish and even Christina Aguilera (with all her Xtina writhing and stage wrangling) couldn’t even begin to match Gaga ’s ability to eyebrow raise. Yes. All true. But Lady Gaga is also (forgive me) just a silly kid who takes herself too seriously. So much so that it’s almost painful to read this latest New York magazine feature by Vanessa Grigoriadis . Gaga conducts interviews in a “robot voice” proclaims singers shouldn’t eat, and shields herself from people taking pictures of New York City landmarks saying she “just can’t take cameras.” Like being in the presence of handheld Nokia makes her interior crumble. It would be nice to say these kind of rock star theatrics are at all refreshing, but quite frankly, in this day in age where, as Grigordios points out, “musicians are aware that they should show themselves to journalists” this kind of pretentiousness just comes across as transparently batty and not particularly likable. Not that it isn’t working, mind you. Afterall, Like Gaga says: ‘I’m from New York. I will kill to get what I need.” ~Melissa Noble Continue reading

Apple admits using child labour and poisoning workers

Apple has admitted that child labour was used at the factories that build its computers, iPods and mobile phones. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/7330986/Apple-admits-using-child-lab… At least eleven 15-year-old children were discovered to be working last year in three factories which supply Apple. The company did not name the offending factories, or say where they were based, but the majority of its goods are assembled in China. Apple also has factories working for it in Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, the Czech Republic and the United States. Apple said the child workers are now no longer being used, or are no longer underage. “In each of the three facilities, we required a review of all employment records for the year as well as a complete analysis of the hiring process to clarify how underage people had been able to gain employment,” Apple said, in an annual report on its suppliers. Apple has been repeatedly criticised for using factories that abuse workers and where conditions are poor. Last week, it emerged that 62 workers at a factory that manufactures products for Apple and Nokia had been poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause muscular degeneration and blur eyesight. Apple has not commented on the problems at the plant, which is run by Wintek, in the Chinese city of Suzhou. A spokesman for Wintek said that “almost all” of the affected workers were back at work, but that some remained in hospital. Wintek said n-hexane was commonly used in the technology industry, and that problems had arisen because some areas of the factory were not ventilated properly. Last year, an employee at Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that is one of Apple's biggest suppliers, committed suicide after being accused of stealing a prototype for the iPhone. Sun Danyong, 25, was a university graduate working in the logistics department when the prototype went missing. An investigation revealed that the factory's security staff had beaten him, and he subsequently jumped to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building. Foxconn runs a number of super-factories in the south of China, some of which employ as many as 300,000 workers and form self-contained cities, complete with banks, post offices and basketball courts. It has been accused, however, of treating its employees extremely harshly. China Labor Watch, a New York-based NGO, accused Foxconn of having an “inhumane and militant” management, which neglects basic human rights. Foxconn's management were not available for comment. In its report, Apple revealed the sweatshop conditions inside the factories it uses. Apple admitted that at least 55 of the 102 factories that produce its goods were ignoring Apple's rule that staff cannot work more than 60 hours a week. The technology company's own guidelines are already in breach of China's widely-ignored labour law, which sets out a maximum 49-hour week for workers. Apple also said that one of its factories had repeatedly falsified its records in order to conceal the fact that it was using child labour and working its staff endlessly. “When we investigated, we uncovered records and conducted worker interviews that revealed excessive working hours and seven days of continuous work,” Apple said, adding that it had terminated all contracts with the factory. Only 65 per cent of the factories were paying their staff the correct wages and benefits, and Apple found 24 factories where workers had not even been paid China's minimum wage of around 800 yuan (Pounds76) a month. Meanwhile, only 61 per cent of Apple's suppliers were following regulations to prevent injuries in the workplace and a mere 57 per cent had the correct environmental permits to operate. The high environmental cost of Apple's products was revealed when three factories were discovered to be shipping hazardous waste to unqualified disposal companies. Apple said it had required the factories to “perform immediate inspections of their wastewater discharge systems” and hire an independent environmental consultant to prevent future violations. However, Apple has not stopped using the factories. In 2008, Apple found that a total of 25 child workers had been employed to build iPods, iPhones and its range of computers. added by: animalia_libero
