‘Dark Knight Rises’ Poster: First Look!

Debris rains down what appear to be crumbling Gotham City buildings in first poster from Christopher Nolan’s Batman threequel. By Eric Ditzian “The Dark Knight Rises” teaser poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures In December 2009, a teaser poster for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” hit the Web. It featured a row of skyscrapers looming above disastrous floodwaters and the promise that the sci-fi flick was the brainchild of “the director of ‘The Dark Knight.’ ” That image, it seems, became something of an inspiration for the brand-new teaser poster for Nolan’s third “Batman” film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” The new poster focuses on another collection of buildings, presumably in Bruce Wayne’s hometown, Gotham City. And once again, there is an ominous air of destruction in the urban environment: The buildings appear to be crumbling, debris raining downward — a stark visual contrast to the film title’s single tweak since the previous installment: the addition of the word “rises.” None of this is to suggest the “Dark Knight Rises” poster is some “Inception” knock-off; Nolan’s beloved “Batman” films hardly need to draft off his Oscar-nominated 2010 dream-heist flick. There are, of course, as many differences as there are similarities between the two. First and foremost, in the “Dark Knight Rises” poster, the tops of the buildings outline the unmistakable form of Batman’s symbol. And whereas Leonardo DiCaprio is front and center in the “Inception” poster (and up to his knees in flood waters), Christian Bale as Batman or Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be seen in the new poster. For now, the only person we’ve officially seen in character is Tom Hardy as Bane . In May, a photo of Bane — shot from behind, a menacing mask over his head — popped up online after Warner Bros. launched a viral marketing campaign. The poster debut comes just days before we’re reportedly set to get our first glimpse of the “Dark Knight Rises” teaser trailer, which is supposed to debut in front of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” when it opens on Friday. With a reported running time of one minute and 33 seconds, hopefully, there will be peeks not only at Bane in motion, but Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (and possibly in full Catwoman gear). But who knows? Production only kicked off in May, so it’s anybody’s guess how much footage Nolan will deliver in the trailer. If the first “Inception” trailer is any indication, we’ll peep a lot of footage, but likely remain clueless as to what the whole freaking thing is about. And that’s just how we like it. Chris Nolan and Guillermo del Toro: 10 Highlights From Their Memento Q&A

The filmmaking process and a particular studio head’s cojones were among the topics of discussion Friday night when director Guillermo del Toro ( Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth ) held a Q&A with Christopher Nolan ( The Dark Knight, Inception ) to celebrate the 10th anniversary Blu-ray release of Nolan’s breakout film, the neo-noir psychological mystery Memento . But while the sold-out crowd at L.A.’ s Egyptian Theatre got to witness the playful Del Toro warming up straight-laced Nolan like a looser, geekier James Lipton, a few topics were strictly off-limits.

Anne Hathaway Will ‘Go There’ As Catwoman In ‘Dark Knight Rises’

‘Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films,’ a studio source tells MTV News of her casting. By Kara Warner Anne Hathaway Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Given the overwhelming, worldwide success of “Batman Begins” and, even more so, “The Dark Knight,” any time there’s news about Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises,” it make headlines. Case in point: Wednesday’s (January 19) big announcement from Warner Bros. about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) and the unveiling of Tom Hardy’s role as the formidable, villainous Bane. Regarding Hathaway’s casting, who has been linked to the film via various rumors that started last November, a source at Warner Bros. told MTV News that the “Love & Other Drugs” star is a great choice to play the femme fatale. “She definitely has the [acting] chops,” the studio source said. “She can ‘go there’ with this role. Obviously, Chris [Nolan] sees something in her that’s fantastic that we haven’t seen or have seen … plus Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films.” Hathaway is, after all, an Oscar-nominated actress (in 2009, for her performance in “Rachel Getting Married”). She first captured the hearts of young girls everywhere in Disney films like “The Princess Diaries” and “Ella Enchanted,” which showcased both a feminine vulnerability and modern, sassy takes on the traditional “princess” stereotype. From there, Hathaway’s highlights include a supporting role in “Brokeback Mountain”; the action/comedy “Get Smart,” where we saw her more mature, sexy side as Agent 99, the perfect foil to Steve Carell’s bumbling Maxwell Smart; a starring role in “The Devil Wears Prada,” opposite Meryl Streep; and her darker, subversive and ultimately award-worthy performance in “Rachel.” So, in looking at Hathaway’s r

During our rapid-fire questions, MTV News also asks about Lady Gaga, ‘American Idol’ and retirement. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News It’s time to play “Address That Rumor” with Angelina Jolie! Interviews with the Oscar winner don’t come along every day, and when you actually have the opportunity to chat with her, you’ve got to maximize your time. Thus, when MTV News sat down with Jolie in Paris while she was promoting “The Tourist,” we took the opportunity to throw out some rapid-fire questions about upcoming projects, persistent rumors and pop-culture preferences. OK, Angie, let’s get down to business! Rumor has it that your husband, Brad Pitt, is going to have a cameo in your directorial debut, a drama set during the Bosnian war. True or false? Jolie: “Possibly.” Cryptic! Moving on: There’s another Jolie/Pitt rumor floating around the Web, this one that you guys will reunite onscreen for “The Tiger,” possibly directed by “Black Swan” helmer Darren Aronofsky. Yes or no? Jolie: “I don’t really know much about that, but I love Darren Aronofsky.” Fair enough. Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his third “Batman” film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” and the Internet has decided you’d be perfect to play Catwoman. Whatcha think? Jolie: “I haven’t heard anything about it, but I thought they did it.” Well, yes — once with Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” and again with Halle Berry in 2004’s “Catwoman” — but never in Nolan’s version of the franchise. Jolie: “I see. Thank you. Flattering.” Enough with rumors, Miss Jolie. Let’s talk about leisure-time activities: Do you prefer “American Idol” or “The X Factor”? Jolie: “I’m not really familiar with both. I would assume ‘X Factor’? But I’m not sure what I’m saying!” Oh, awkward. We promise we’re almost done! Lady Gaga or Kanye West? Jolie: “Ask my kids!” Lame! And finally, when it comes down to it, will you ever retire or will you act to the bitter end? Jolie: “Retirement. Certainly not act to the bitter end. I’d like to think I’d do other things.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Tourist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
