Christian Bale Excited To Star With Tom Hardy In ‘Dark Knight Rises’

‘He seems like he’s a balls-out,’ Bale says of the ‘Inception’ actor. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christian Bale Photo: Jun Sato/WireImage Who will Tom Hardy play in “The Dark Knight Rises” ? Rumor has it the “Inception” actor is set to become a villain, though director Christopher Nolan has gone on record as saying the Riddler won’t factor into his upcoming third installment of the “Batman” reboot. There’s talk that Hardy would do well in the role of troubled psychologist Hugo Strange, crime lord Black Mask or gun-toting hit man Deadshot. Whoever Hardy ends up portraying, the man he’ll likely do battle against is excited for the opportunity to act with him. “I liked him in ‘Inception’ and I did see ‘Bronson’ as well,” said Christian Bale — Bruce Wayne/Batman himself — in a recent interview with MTV News. “He seems like he’s a balls-out.” When we asked Bale if he was looking forward to Hardy as an opponent, he answered, “Yeah, sounds good.” Did Bale confirm that Hardy will in fact be a villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”? Did the “opponent” part of our question breeze right by Bale? Watch the video interview and judge for yourself. While Bale left the door slightly open to returning for a fourth “Batman” flick, he seemed fairly convinced that “The Dark Knight Rises” will be his and Nolan’s final installment in the DC Comics franchise. “I think so. That’s up to Chris,” he said. “That was always what the discussion was. But you know, if Chris says, ‘I see another story here,’ then we’ll be up for it. But in my mind, I’m expecting this will be it.” Of course, there’s always the fanciful hope that Bale and Nolan will reunite a few decades from now for an adaptation of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” which tells the story of a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to become the Caped Crusader once again. “That maybe would not be bad,” Bale laughed of the idea. “Maybe in 20 years time, but you need that break.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Male Nurse Arrested for Fondling Patients’ Genitals

A male nurse is under arrest for sexually assaulting two of his male patients at Western Medical Center in Anaheim. Richard Alan Nolan, 45, of Buena Park was arrested Wednesday by Anaheim police on suspicion of felony sexual assault on two patients, according to Anaheim Sgt. Rick Martinez. Investigators say the probe began when a 23 year old man reported that his genitals were fondled by a hospital employee who said he was a doctor conducting a medical examination. The “doctor” turned out to be Nolan, who is a male nurse at the hospital, officials say. Detectives discovered a second victim, also a male in his 20's, during their investigation, Martinez said. The second victim was a patient at the hospital in June, 2009 and identified Nolan as his attacker. Nolan was booked at the Anaheim Detention Facility for felony sexual assault. His bail has been set at one hundred thousand dollars. Officials say the investigation is on-going. They believe there may be more victims and are urging anyone who may know anything about the sexual attacks to call Anaheim police http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-male-nurse-arrested-anaheim,0,377633.story added by: unimatrix0

‘The Other Guys’ Captures Audiences At Weekend Box Office

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy took first place from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception.’ By Josh Wigler Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Other Guys” ($35.6 million) #2 “Inception” ($18.6 million) #3 “Step Up 3-D” ($15.5 million) #4 “Salt” ($11.1 million) #5 “Dinner for Schmucks” ($10.5 million) The dream is over, as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” is no longer the reigning champion at the weekend domestic box office — that distinction now belongs to “The Other Guys.” Starring an A-List crew of comedians and action stars including Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “The Other Guys” easily took first place in its first weekend in theaters with a $35.6 million debut, marking yet another successful endeavor from frequent collaborators Ferrell and director Adam McKay. Additionally, the strong debut for “The Other Guys” demonstrates that both Ferrell and Wahlberg still have major box-office appeal, a notion that was somewhat questionable after the disappointing performances of Ferrell’s most recent “Land of the Lost” and Wahlberg’s “Max Payne.” Despite slipping from the top spot for the first time since its debut, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring “Inception” remained a strong contender at the box office this weekend, settling for second place with $18.6 million. The high-concept action flick has amassed $227.7 million at the domestic box office since opening four weeks ago. “Step Up 3D” entered the weekend competition with plenty of fanfare but only danced up an estimated $15.5 million bronze medal by Sunday’s end. It’s the weakest debut for any of the “Step Up” films to date, but not by too large of a margin. Fourth and fifth place belonged to the Angelina Jolie-starring “Salt” and comedy flick “Dinner for Schmucks” with $11.1 million and $10.5 million, respectively. Upcoming Releases Rock music, romance and video game references collide when comic book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” arrives in theaters next weekend alongside Sylvester Stallone’s action extravaganza, “The Expendables.” The two geek-baiting films debut against the considerably less violent “Eat Pray Love,” starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. ‘Inception’ Hallway Scene: How Filmmakers Pulled It Off

‘I was blown away and also scratching my head,’ recalls DP Wally Pfister of seeing zero-gravity sequence in the script. By Eric Ditzian Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. On the red carpet for “Inception” last week, star Joseph Gordon-Levitt talked at length about one of the film’s most eye-popping visuals: a zero-gravity fight scene in a dream-created hallway that spins in all directions. It’s an astounding bit of moviemaking magic that has you wondering just how director Christopher Nolan and his team were able to do that. We put that question to Nolan’s right-hand man and longtime director of photography Wally Pfister, who revealed the inside scoop about the hallway scene, describing it as the movie’s most technically challenging sequence. “There are always scenes in a Chris Nolan script where I’m wondering how we’re going to pull it off, going all the way back to Guy Pearce shooting Joe Pantoliano in the head in ‘Memento,’ ” Pfister told MTV News. To create the environment, the scene was shot using not CG effects, but rather massive, rotating sets that twisted and turned and forced Gordon-Levitt to maneuver with utmost caution. Five-hundred crewmembers were involved in the scene, which took a full three weeks to complete. In a World War I-era airship hangar just outside London (also home to sets for “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight”), Nolan’s crew built a series of different hallway settings: a horizontal one that rotated 360 degrees, a vertical one that allowed actors to wear wires and another on which the actors were strapped to steel trolleys, which were eventually erased using visual effects. “When I was reading those rotating hallway scenes, I was blown away and also scratching my head,” Pfister recalled. Gordon-Levitt trained for two weeks with the stunt department to learn how to negotiate the rotations. When it came time to shoot, the whole crew would rehearse first with no rotation, and then graduate to a slower rehearsal with a little rotation, until it was finally time to roll the cameras. “We run the fight scene for as long as the actors can pull it off,” Pfister explained. “We begin with a camera that’s not fixed to the set and shows a bit of the rotation, and then you quickly jump to where you’re rotating with the set. It creates this bizarre, strange movement. It’s an exhausting process for the actors. Having rotated on that set myself, it’s really quite challenging and a very strange thing to get used to. If you jump at the wrong time, you could be falling 12 feet through the air. “We kept coming back to it,” he added. “We’d shoot out a part of a sequence and then the riggers would have to adjust something. We’d duck out and shoot something else and come back a few hours later and shoot more. The whole thing was spread out over about three weeks. You’ve never seen anything like this before.” Which scene in “Inception” ranks as the most memorable to you? Tell us in the comments! Meet ‘Inception’ Breakout Star Tom Hardy

The Brit actor gets another shot at stardom with a role in Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster. By Eric Ditzian Tom Hardy in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. In the midst of all the visual complexity and storytelling wizardry in “Inception,” the weekend’s big box-office winner with a $60.4 million opening, one performance in particular shines through. Tom Hardy plays Eames, a forger on Leonardo DiCaprio’s team of fantastical bandits who is capable of impersonating other people within a shared dream state. From the very first time we meet him in a dusty Kenyan cafe, Eames comes across as an erudite ass-kicker, if such a thing is possible — a guy who can discuss intricate psychological issues at a PhD-level and then turn around and bust a few skulls. Hardy slips into Eames’ sweaty skin for an effortless performance in which… well, it just never seems like he’s acting.

‘Inception’ Director Christopher Nolan Reveals His ‘Star Wars’ Inspiration

‘I want to try and give somebody in the audience the experience I had watching that film,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Leonardo DiCaprio in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. The demented memory flipbook that is “Memento,” the noir-ish freakery of Gotham City in “The Dark Knight,” the intricately woven, epically scaled “Inception” — all this can be traced back to a formative experience director Christopher Nolan had at the cinema in 1977. Seven years old at the time, Nolan took in a screening of “Star Wars.” Nothing was ever the same. “That completely changed movies for me,” he told MTV News. “It changed everything, really.” Nolan had never seen a film that was so, well, intricately woven and epically scaled as George Lucas’ space odyssey. “It created a world that lived on in your mind after you saw the film and seemed to have this limitless potential,” he said. And, as Nolan explains it over three decades later, he’s made a career out of trying to instill a similar sense of wonderment for ticket buyers. “I think, for me, my whole career in making films, really every time I set out to make a film, I want to try and give somebody in the audience the experience I had watching that film, where it really felt like anything was possible in that world,” he said. “That’s a really extraordinary experience to have as a moviegoer.” Nolan started out small, shooting “Following” on a shoestring budget with a bunch of friends. He graduated to “Memento,” gaining some financial backing and the talents of professional actors. Eventually, Warner Bros. handed him the task of resurrecting the dormant “Batman” franchise. After delivering two blockbuster takes on the Caped Crusader, the studio basically gave Nolan a pile of cash and carte blanche to make a movie he’d been dreaming about for 10 years: “Inception.” As with all his earlier films, Nolan set out to deliver an experience that would create a world that lived on in the minds of moviegoers, that seemed to have limitless potential. “I think that’s the highest aspiration of the Hollywood blockbuster,” he said. ‘Inception’: The Early Reviews Are In!

‘Leonardo DiCaprio finds the tortured center of his character,’ one reviewer writes. By Eric Ditzian Leonardo DiCaprio in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. Almost one year ago, the teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” hit the web. It featured acrobatic fight sequences, hallucinatory imagery, and left us with far more questions than answers. Just what the heck was this movie really about, anyway? In the months that followed, Nolan slowly peeled back the curtain to reveal peeks at his top-secret follow-up to 2008’s “The Dark Knight.” Now, with the movie’s July 16 release date approaching, “Inception” has been fully unveiled to industry insiders, and the first reviews are beginning to pop up online. Here’s what folks are saying about the flick. The Story “Leonardo DiCaprio plays Cobb, an expert in what the film calls extraction, the theft of secrets or information from the subconscious mind,” Todd Gilchrist wrote in Cinematical.com . After botching a job thanks to the intrusion of his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard), Cobb finds an unlikely opportunity for redemption from one of his former victims: Saito (Ken Watanabe), CEO of a flourishing multinational, offers him amnesty in exchange for planting an idea — known as inception — within the mind of Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), one of Saito’s competitors. Enlisting the help of teammates Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Ariadne (Ellen Page), Eames (Tom Hardy), and Yusuf (Dileep Rao), Cobb reluctantly agrees to the mission, only to discover that the mind’s defenses are more formidable than any physical threat he could face. Heist-movie plot details notwithstanding, the above description scarcely scratches at the surface of what’s in the film, and certainly reveals nothing of the deeper conceptual and thematic dimensions of its story.” The Look “Shot across four continents by Nolan’s regular d.p., Wally Pfister, and outfitted by production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, ‘Inception’ is easily the director’s most visually unbridled work,” Justin Chang wrote in Variety. “Its canvas stretches from the skyscrapers of Tokyo to the bazaars of Tangiers, from an amber-lit hotel corridor to a snowy mountain compound (a setpiece that plays like an homage to ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’). Pic has arresting effects and images to spare, such as the sight of Paris folding in on itself like a book or Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur performing a fight scene in zero gravity (the explanation for which is even more dazzling).” The Performances “DiCaprio finds the tortured center of his character, a man who is part thief and part spy and whose own guilt-ridden subconscious stands to destroy his chances of succeeding at the proverbial one last job,” Jim Vejvoda wrote in IGN.com . ” ‘Inception’ is sort of a companion piece in a way to ‘Shutter Island,’ the year’s other mind-bender DiCaprio thriller. Gordon-Levitt — who, like DiCaprio, was a child sitcom actor — continues to prove he’s one of the brightest up-and-coming dramatic actors with his turn here. And although she has less screen time than the rest of the cast, Cotillard shines as the film’s closest thing to a femme fatale.” The “Matrix” Comparison “[T]here’s a sort of ‘Matrix’ action movie vibe about the [marketing] campaign, and despite some wild visual moments in the film, I wouldn’t describe this as an action film at all,” Drew McWeeny wrote in HitFix.com . “There are action beats in it, but all of them are ultimately in service of the emotional journey that Dom takes in the film, and as a result, the stakes seem so much higher than they would if it was just another movie where people were chasing around some empty Macguffin. Everything in this film … cities folding in on themselves, buildings filling with sudden floods of water, gravity that stops working, reality fraying at the edges … ties back in to whatever happened between Dom and his wife Mal years ago.” The Bottom Line “Following up on such ingenious and intriguing films as ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Memento,’ Nolan has outdone himself,” Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter. ” ‘Inception’ puts him not only at the top of the heap of sci-fi all-stars, but it also should put this Warner Bros. release near or at the top of the summer movies. It’s very hard to see how a film that plays so winningly to so many demographics would not be a worldwide hit.” Are you excited to see “Inception”? Sound off in the comments below!
