Greenland Glacier Retreat One Mile Overnight

NASA's just released some pretty dramatic satellite photos of the north branch of Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier from July 6 and 7–when an area of ice 2.7 square miles in size ( more than twice the size of New York City's Central Park), where the glacier meets the ocean, broke up overnight and the glacier retreated one mile inland. That's as much retreat in one night as the average for nearly two years. Thomas Wagner, cryospheric program scientist at NASA, commented: While there have been ice breakouts of this magnitude from Jakobshavn and other glaciers in the past, this event is unusual because it occurs on the heels of a warm winter that saw no sea ice in the surrounding bay. While this exact relationship between these events is being determined, it lends credence to the theory that warming of the oceans is responsible for the ice loss observed throughout Greenland and Antarctica…. http://bit.ly/b1jf2R added by: ras_menelik

Obama to open 1.8 million Alaskan acres to oil drilling

The Interior Department is offering oil and gas leases on 1.8 million acres of Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve while promising to protect critical migratory bird and caribou habitat. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the Bureau of Land Management will offer 190 tracts with bids to be opened Aug. 11 in Anchorage. The sale is one of dozens, mostly in Western states, that Salazar announced in November. The petroleum reserve covers 23 million acres on Alaska's North Slope. That's an area slightly smaller than the state of Indiana. added by: JanforGore

Yelawolf Becomes ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Contender With Big Boi’s Help

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010’ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Yelawolf Photo: Interscope “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” Candidate: Yelawolf Yelawolf just had a show in his hometown of Gadsden, Alabama, and was so moved by what he saw, he was at a loss for words. Luckily, he had rhymes instead. “You had these white boys with these big-ass trucks with mud all over them,” he recalled. “D-boys from the North Side projects rolling up on dunks. You had dune buggies, bikes. It was everything I’ve been saying coming to form.” Wolf has been toiling underground for years, signing with legendary record exec Kawan “KP” Prather in 2007. He went through getting dropped by Sony Records and being snubbed by Def Jam only to heat up so large, Interscope Records picked him up earlier this year. Wolf’s energetic live shows and his performance style — which fuses hip-hop and rock — set him apart. Of late, he’s gotten a major co-sign from Big Boi, appearing on the Andre 3000-produced Sir Lucious Left Foot track “You Ain’t No DJ.” “That was actually my debut feature on a distributed project with a major artist,” said Wolf, who has been on independent projects for Juelz Santana and Slim Thug. “That sh– is jamming. As soon as I found out, I was rubbing my hands together as to when I could work with Outkast. I’ve been with KP since ’07, waiting on that moment.” On his upcoming debut, Trunk Muzik: 0-60, Yela got a chance to work with another ATL superstar: Gucci Mane. “I wanted to take advantage of the moment,” he explained of working with Gucci on the yet-untitled track. “I was like, ‘Let’s go do an intro together. Let’s go intro this bitch and vibe out like MCs. Let’s do this bitch.’ That’s what we did. Gucci’s rock and roll, balls-to-the-wall hip-hop. Straight Southern b-boy rap sh–. I’ve always been a fan of Gucci’s style. I was a huge Crunchy Black fan. Even like the Nutcracker from Group Home, Shawty Lo. Very broken-down, simple rap style. I was excited to have him. It made the record. The record was already crazy; he just took it to that next level.” Wolf’s Trunk Muzik: 0-60 is an enhancement of his mixtape Trunk Muzik. “We picked the 0-60 title because, for one, we didn’t want to alienate any of the new fans we were making,” he described. “We felt it was too soon to step outside of anywhere we were. With Trunk Muzik, we created a sound and feeling we didn’t want to move from. We called it Trunk Muzik: 0-60 because it represents how fast we been moving since we been doing these shows and got a deal with Interscope. Everything is moving. We wanted to mirror that with the music. Picking five of the fan favorites from Trunk Muzik and putting on seven new ones. “I’m never scared what people are gonna think about music that I make,” Yela added. “I just go in there and make music that sounds good to me. And it sounds good to my crew. I just trust my crew. If it leaves the studio and we’re happy with it, that’s what matters the most to us. Because if we’re happy with it, then I can perform it. As long as I can perform that record, I can translate the energy I need to get somebody to understand it. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment. I’m just soaking it up, taking it day by day, trying not to let it go to my head. I just love my fans and the fans I’m making. My fans are like no other. Completely original people.” Yelawolf and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Leighton Meester’s Short Shorts Always Impress

With this heat wave that’s been hitting the North East over the last week or so, there are a ton of hot chicks walking the streets in their tiny little short shorts. I love it, but the camera taped to my shoe doesn’t handle the heat as well as I had hoped. Anyhow, here’s Leighton Meester showing off her cute little booty in her tasty denim shorty shorts. Who would have thought that cutting the legs off a pair of jeans could look so good. Nice.

LeBron James Heads To Miami Heat

The NBA Superstar announces long-awaited decision, saying decision to leave hometown Cleveland motivated by desire ‘to win.’ By Kelley L. Carter LeBron James announces that he will play for the Miami Heat on ESPN July 8 Photo: ESPN It was a move that will surely go down in sports history. But after a protracted wait, King James finally announced, at 9:27 p.m. ET, he’d be joining the Miami Heat. LeBron James’ decision to televise his decision became an event that seemed as if it could have been ripped from the pages of a screenplay. Sitting before ESPN cameras, the former Cleveland Cavaliers forward had millions of viewers anticipating his final choice with baited breath. “I feel like this is going to give me the best opportunity to win — and to win for multiple years. I want to be able to win championships,” he said, explaining what motivated him to venture to Miami. “This process has been everything I thought and more. I put myself in the position to have this process, where I could hear teams’ pitches and figure out what was the best possibility for me to win … and be happy,” James said during an interview before his big announcement. The 25-year-old revealed that it was a really humbling experience to be in the position he’d found himself in, as multiple teams vied for his attention. James thanked all of those teams, saying he’d made the decision earlier Thursday morning (July 8) and adding that in the preceding weeks, he often changed his mind on a day-to-day basis. “I woke up, had a great conversation with my mom, once I had that conversation with her, I was set,” he said. James is considered to be the most prized free agent in league history, and he was the last of the top free agents to announce where he’d land. The major factor in his decision, he said, was the best opportunity for him to win, both now and in the future. “Every since I was a rookie or in high school … that was the number one thing for me,” he said. “I’ve done some great things in my seven years and I want to continue to do that,” he continued about his tenure in Cleveland. The announcement comes after what felt like an eternity of a waiting period, with the two-time NBA MVP finally ending months of speculation about where he would play basketball next season. (James is only one of two players to earn the MVP accolade twice by the age of 25; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the other.) Diehard NBA fans and casual watchers alike had been guessing about where James would go in 2010, many since the NBA superstar signed his last contract back in 2007. Before his announcement, speculation was heavy: Would he break his hometown, Cleveland’s, heart? Would he go to Miami and join his former U.S. Olympic teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh? Or would he go to New York or Chicago? Hours before the announcement on Thursday, James made an appearance at his basketball camp, arriving mid-afternoon with former teammate Damon Jones. Others in attendance included top college coaches, including Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina’s Roy Williams, West Virginia’s Bob Huggins and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. James gave his decision during an hourlong broadcast that aired live ESPN from a Boys & Girls Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. The aim of the special program, James’ said, was also to raise at least $1 million to aid James’ foundation. What do you think of LeBron’s decision to go to Miami? Did he make the right choice? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Lebron James

Irreversible Changes in Oceans Leading to Global Mass Extinction

Unfortunately, it’s an all too real possibility. Renowned marine scientists Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Director of The University of Queensland’s Global Change Institute, and Dr John F. Bruno, an Associate Professor at The University of North Carolina, have completed a comprehensive study pulling together information from the most recent oceanographic research. Malveaux Hates Fourth of July – Reminds Her of Slavery and Economic Inequality

If you were African-American living in the era of President Barack Obama, would you hate the Fourth of July because it reminded you of slavery and economic inequality? You would if your name was Julianne Malveaux and you were the syndicated columnist that also serves as the president of Bennett College, the historically black women’s school in Greensboro, North Carolina. So disdainful of America’s most-revered national holiday is Malveaux that she admitted in her July 2 USA Today op-ed , “I have never been big on the Fourth of July. Most years, I took great pleasure in reading the powerful Frederick Douglass speech, ‘The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.'” Though written in 1852, this college president actually sees relevance to modern day America in these words: “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July,” he thundered to a crowd in Rochester, N.Y. “I answer, a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity … your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery.”  Imagine that. A black man is now the most powerful elected leader on the face of the planet. Another black man is the most powerful law enforcement official in the country, and under the previous administration, the Secretaries of State were black, one of them also being a woman. Regardless, the president of a mostly black women’s college sees nothing but racial injustice and economic inequality around her:  Our nation has come a long way since 1852, but for many African Americans, shouts of liberty are still hollow mockery. Unemployment is a scourge on all Americans, but the black unemployment rate, at 15.3% in May, is nearly twice the white rate. Every economic indicator – income, wealth, homeownership – screams inequality. Despite his scathing commentary, Douglass said, “I do not despair of this country.” Nor do I. But progress has been so slowed, optimism so dimmed, and some criticisms of our president so blatantly racial that I’m returning to my ritual of reading Frederick Douglass, if only as a reminder that the struggle for justice and equality must continue. So, in Malveaux’s mind like so many of her ilk, equal opportunity isn’t enough. Until all Americans possess the same things, the nation is unjust. Which means this is not about equal opportunity but equal outcome, an inconvenient truth her kind refuses to admit as they shout “racist” at any white person more successful than them. Of course, what should one expect from a serial-hater that in 1994 actually wished — on national television — for Clarence Thomas to die: I guess for folks like Malveaux, racial and economic equality need only apply to black liberals. Sadly, this is a racial hypocrisy quite common amongst so-called journalists today. Doesn’t make sense, does it?  On the other hand, Malveaux has contributed to The Progressive, a magazine whose editor also hates the Fourth of July. Like peas in a progressive pod.
