‘Avengers’ Trailer: ‘Walking Dead’ Creator Weighs In

Robert Kirkman tells MTV News, ‘I don’t know how this movie doesn’t make 10 trillion dollars.’ By Josh Wigler Scarlett Johansson in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Two days have passed since the first trailer for “Marvel’s The Avengers” burst its way online, and we still can’t get enough. From our own analysis of the trailer to commentary from assorted movie and comic book experts, we here at MTV News remain insatiable in our appetite for all things “Avengers.” It’s a good thing we’re not alone. Writer Robert Kirkman, creator of the “Walking Dead” comic books and executive producer of the AMC television series, is just as enamored with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as we are — though he does have a few bones to pick with the first trailer. Kirkman, who is celebrating both the arrival of his first “Walking Dead” prose novel and the return of the television series this week, sat down with MTV News to take a big bloody bite out of the “Avengers” trailer. See what he had to say in our video, and read on for more of his thoughts. Loki’s Arrival Tom Hiddleston returns to the Marvel Universe as the trickster god Loki, this time terrorizing not just Thor, but his brother’s new earthly companions as well. But there’s something about his arrival in this first trailer that Kirkman thinks is a little bit off . “Loki’s hanging out in [some kind of alien chamber], and I don’t know … there are guys showing up, and he’s in this thing that’s not quite a prison cell, but he’s not in Asgard,” the writer said. “He’s standing there, but he’s not really doing anything. Then these guys show up, and he’s like, ‘I’m going to stab you!’ And didn’t these guys know he was going to stab them? I don’t know!” Getting Ready As the threat facing Earth grows increasingly apparent, Agent Coulson asks his supervisor, Nick Fury, what they need to do next. “We get ready,” is Fury’s stoic reply — a reply that doesn’t sit right with Kirkman. “Look, I’m very excited about this movie, and I think this trailer is very good, but is there not a better line than, ‘We get ready’?” he said. “Like, ‘What do we do now?’ ‘Well, we get ready! We’re going to put our shoes on and go do some stuff!’ I don’t get that. I’m sorry. I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic movie, but I wish there had been a better line there, like, ‘We’re going to get these mother—-ing superheroes off of this mother—-ing planet.’ I don’t know. That would have been better … probably not appropriate, though!” Widow’s Pose Scarlett Johansson’s infamous pose in front of a massive explosion has had fans scratching their heads for some weeks now, and the “Avengers” trailer did little to explain her calm demeanor in the thick of the action. Kirkman, also confused, doesn’t seem to mind the shot: “There’s a thing exploding behind her, so clearly she’s in a fight or something, but she’s just standing there looking pretty — which is great!” Iron Man Sparkles in the Sunlight Even though most of the Avengers have had their chance to shine in their very own movies, there’s little debate that Iron Man remains the feather in Marvel Studios’ cap. Ol’ Shellhead is featured prominently throughout the “Avengers” trailer, often seen blasting off over the iconic New York City skyline. Kirkman was more than pleased to see the wealth of Iron Man action, so much so that he feels the red-and-gold hero could be put to good use in other movies. “I think you could put Iron Man in almost any movie, and I would go see it,” he said with a laugh. “Like, the new ‘Twilight’ movie. I’m not really into that stuff, but if you put Iron Man flying in the new ‘Twilight’ movie, I’m totally going to go see that movie!” Stark’s Facial Hair Still, if there’s one critique Kirkman has for Tony Stark, it’s the billionaire industrialist’s goatee. The eternally bearded Kirkman knows a thing or two about facial hair, and he simply does not approve of Stark’s look. “If you look at the way that goatee is designed, people are going to get that tattooed on their backs at some point,” he predicted. “It looks like some kind of weird tribal spaceship design or something. It irks me.” Rocket Launched Already sold on the “Avengers” trailer, Kirkman’s enthusiasm for the superhero flick only grew at the sight of Nick Fury wielding a rocket launcher. Easily one of the standout scenes of the trailer, Fury’s explosive appearance nevertheless struck Kirkman as a bit unnecessary — and a lot awesome . “You don’t need to have Samuel L. Jackson shooting a rocket launcher,” he reasoned. “That’s not necessary . This already looks like a good movie, and I’m probably going to see it anyway. But at the point that Samuel L. Jackson shoots a rocket launcher, I think to myself, ‘I’m probably going to see this movie twice .’ ” Hulked Out Another immediate selling point for Kirkman? The trailer’s final shot, which gives us our first look at Mark Ruffalo’s Jade Giant. “‘Oh, by the way, the Incredible Hulk is also in this movie.’ Which, to me, is ridiculous,” Kirkman said, laughing. “How much money do you want to spend on this movie? You got us! To add the Hulk on top of that, I don’t know how this movie doesn’t make 10 trillion dollars. I think James Cameron’s going to have a hard time topping this one’s box office when he comes back to do his next movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Seen On The Protestin’ Scene: Yeezy And His Gold Grills Visit Occupy Wall Street

With that shady BDR character… SMH. They must’ve heard there was lots of white women down there. Our homeslices over at the New York Observer posted some photos of Perpetual Professional Bandwagon Jumper Russell Simmons bringing his wallet flexing “poet” friend Kanye West by the “Occupy Wall Street” protests and we thought we’d share: Yes, that Kanye West—the one with the $25,000 chains and small child-sized Horus-head-as-bling pieces—dropped into Occupy Wall Street today. He was apparently accompanied by Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, who Tweeted “kanye west is on his way to #occupywallstreet” with this photo: It sounds like it was sheer pandemonium, though no definitive accounts other than plenty of pictures and “he was here, and then he left” have yet to come through. And so it is: Kanye West gets added to the list of celebrities (Susan Sarandon, Jeff Mangum, Michael Moore, Talib Kweli) who have dropped into Occupy Wall Street who are not Thom Yorke. These ninjas ain’t even in the 99%, are they? Last time we checked they was ballin’ so hard, you know… And we could probably pay off all our student loans combined with the gold in Ye’s mouth. Just sayin’!

Justin Bieber My World Tour Is ‘The Loudest Thing’

Bieber tour insiders, including road DJ and openers Cobra Starship, dish to MTV News about ‘absolutely ridiculous’ South America shows. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber greets fans at the W Hotel in Mexico City Photo: W Mexico City Justin Bieber has taken his My World Tour to Mexico and South America, and by all accounts, things are going really well. MTV News got the scoop directly from some of the folks that are on the road with the Biebs, including his tour DJ and one of his tourmates. “Everything’s been cool. Everything’s been great,” DJ Tay James told MTV News. “Absolutely ridiculous. I’ve been with him since his second show and just to see him do shows with 300 people to us doing [shows with] 50,000, it’s crazy. I’m just happy to be in the position that I am. That’s like my little brother.” Cobra Starship are Bieber’s opening act on the tour, and the group’s bassist, Alex Suarez, said he was amazed by the size of the crowds, not to mention the loudness. “You know, it’s not too different than how we kind of got our start,” he said. “When we started touring, we started touring with Fall Out Boy and doing big tours. I think we’ve come to the point where Cobra, our fans have stuck with us. “It’s really amazing,” he continued. “These are the largest shows that we ever played. As soon as they open the doors, there is a constant tone of scream. It is really amazing. We watched Justin’s set — it’s the loudest thing.” There’s a lot of downtime on the road, and according to DJ Tay, when they aren’t onstage entertaining the Beliebers, he and the Biebs often discuss music. “We definitely converse on new music,” he shared. “I know [Justin’s] a big fan of Drake and Busta Rhymes. He will put me onto music and I will put him onto music; we keep each other up on it.” They also spend a lot of time playing music and posting videos online. “This whole DJing thing came out of nowhere,” the DJ said. “We started this when I first got on with him and he just wanted to play around with the turntables. He was scratching here and there, and then he was like, ‘Man, teach me a few things.’ So every time we do a video, he gets a step better. And I just wanted to show everyone he’s trying. He’s open to new things. That’s something about him that I admire.” DJ Tay also teased Bieber’s upcoming Christmas LP, Under the Mistletoe, predicting the teen star will have everyone going bananas on November 1. “You guys got to get ready for this Christmas album. It’s amazing. It’s probably one of the best Christmas albums that I ever heard,” he said. Wall Street Protesters ‘Still Have Faith In The Future’

‘All of my adult life has been economic downturn,’ a young activist tells MTV News about corporate greed, unemployment, social injustice. By Uptin Saiidi, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City Photo: Mario Tama/Getty Images NEW YORK — What started as just a dozen college students camping overnight on Wall Street three weeks ago has mushroomed into thousands of protesters and Street-inspired gatherings across the country, from Los Angeles to Boston. On Monday, a number of protesters dressed up as zombies, holding Monopoly money in their mouths in a gesture to financial workers. The crowd was especially energized after more than 700 of them were arrested over the weekend by New York City Police Department officers, who claimed they were blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. Thousands marched from the “base camp” at Zuccotti Park, a plaza near the city’s financial center, chanting, “Take the bridge!” Even as the number of protesters continues to fluctuate, the gatherings have remained relatively small by New York City standards. The longevity of the unrest, however, is far from normal. MTV News recently headed downtown and caught up with some of the young protesters to see what exactly was on their minds. Mike Chrisemer, a 24-year-old graduate student at the City University of New York, said he got involved on the second day of the protest and doesn’t plan to abandon the cause. “The general feeling is that the top 1 percent of people is ruling over the rest of us, the 99 percent, and it’s not the status quo that we want to see anymore.” Sympathetic supporters have been donating food to the “occupiers,” and those who camp overnight at the park rely on portable gas for laptop energy. Social media networks like Twitter have, of course, helped spark interest in the cause and serve as a vehicle to spread its message. For those who cannot get to NYC, a live stream is available at the Occupy Wall Street website . Celebrity involvement has also helped stoke media attention. Lupe Fiasco , Susan Sarandon, Mark Ruffalo and filmmaker Michael Moore made appearances in the past week, while “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin has expressed support over his Twitter At around 1 p.m. ET last Friday, an online rumor began to spread that Radiohead would be giving a surprise performance that afternoon in support of the protest. The buzz was put to rest when the band’s rep later denied the group would perform, but it’s likely that many curious onlookers (and Radiohead fans) had headed to the park anticipating the event. By 4:30 p.m., a statement was posted on the Occupy Wall Street site apologizing for the miscommunication; they further explained that an email from Radiohead’s manager turned out to be a fake and cited the challenges of verifying information in an open-source movement. The band’s no-show didn’t slow down momentum though. Late Friday afternoon, an influx of curious spectators wandered the park, many admitting they came after hearing the concert rumors. “That probably brought a lot of these people here, but they’re still here. It’s not just about Radiohead, it’s not a pop culture movement, it’s a real movement to challenge the status quo,” Chrisemer told us. The protests come at a time when the unemployment rate among American youths under 25 is at 18 percent compared to the national rate of 9 percent. Nearly half of young Americans are underemployed, and the amount of student loan debt has recently surpassed credit card debt. Tim Payne, a 20-year-old New York University undergrad, said he had been coming to the park between classes to hold signs and participate in the protest. “College tuition keeps going up and the top 400 people have more wealth than the lowest 125 million. I have all these loans out and they’re profiting off that, and I don’t think that’s fair.” Some reports have been critical of the protesters for reportedly failing to deliver a clear message about their grievances. Instead, critics say, the rally has become a gathering place for anyone dissatisfied with, well, just about anything. When MTV News spoke with some of the young activists on Friday, their cardboard signs had messages that varied from dissatisfaction with financial corruption, NYPD police brutality, discrimination against Muslims and workers’ rights. “People have so much frustration with government and media, and they’re taking this out as an outlet in different ways,” NYU student Payne explained. It’s still unclear whether the protests will succeed in channeling frustration into a lasting movement similar to the Tea Party’s conservative movement, which was started in 2009 by a group of Americans fed up with the status quo for different reasons. Occupy Wall Street protesters seem to be hopeful that they will have a voice that continues to be heard and gains momentum into the 2012 elections. “It’s more than just Wall Street,” Payne added. “It’s the fact that all of my adult life has been economic downturn. And I heard a quote once: it was ‘When did the future change from a promise to a threat?’ I feel like the people here still have faith in the future and are trying to change it.” Share your thoughts on the ongoing Wall Street protests in the comments below! Is THIS The End: Will Smith’s $19 Million “Family Fitting” NYC Apartment Up For Sale [PICS]

At any other given time, no one would think a thing about Will Smith giving up an apartment in a city that he doesn’t live in. But being that we’re still not quite sure what’s good with him and Jada and they’re efforts to try to convince us that everything is still great aren’t really that convincing, the sale of this SOHO apartment is making folks ask questions. But really, it’s just because he’s done filming Men In Black 3. The actor, musician and producer snagged the rental in 2010 after a lengthy search in the Big Apple for the perfect temporary digs. According to an article in the New York Post last year, Smith reportedly hired one woman who flew to the East Coast to view one apartment before heading back to the West Coast a few hours later. Why the in-depth search? Smith was looking for not only a private and luxurious New York apartment, but one with room for his family and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. The place at 25 Bond Street clearly fits the bill. One of only eight apartments in the building, the nearly $20 million home has over 7,300 square feet of living space, five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. Smith paid a reported $55,000 a month in rent, which is one of the reasons to choose to rent rather than buy in this area. The monthly payment for this home, even with 20 percent down and low mortgage rates, is $84,302 with a 30-year-fixed loan. It’s no secret that New York real estate is expensive; in the NoHo neighborhood, median home values hit at $745,000, according to data from Zillow Mortgage Marketplace. Which Would You Rather (Not) See: New Year’s Eve or Human Centipede 2?

In the brand new trailer for New Year’s Eve , Garry Marshall’s holiday-themed movie event that promises to give the phrase “ensemble romantic comedy” a bad name, Robert De Niro wonders what could possibly beat “New York on New Year’s Eve.” I’ll tell you what: Not throwing all of your actorly credibility out the window confetti-style to appear alongside Zac Efron, Jon Bon Jovi and Ludacris in a movie that features Ashton Kutcher trapped in an elevator with the annoying girl from Glee . You know what other moviegoers might also consider better than seeing Garry Marshall’s vision of NYC on New Year’s Eve? Tom Six’s Human Centipede 2 , which inspires similar nausea but for different reasons.
