‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ At The Box Office: How High Will It Go?

‘This has a very real shot at hitting $1 billion worldwide,’ says Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. After opening to $102.7 million in ticket sales the weekend before Thanksgiving 2005, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” swept through to the post-holiday weekend and picked up another $54.7 million — just a 47-percent drop from its opening numbers. Five years later, in a return to a November release, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” succeeded in notching the franchise’s highest 10-day launch ever. But that hefty total (an estimated $220.4 million domestically) is less impressive considering the latest boy wizard flick is only the third-largest installment in terms of actual attendance, according to Box Office Mojo . Still, it would be enormously impressive if “Deathly Hallows, Part 1” could sustain that 10-day head start and become the highest-grossing movie in the series. Unfortunately, many observers believe that just isn’t going to happen. “I don’t think ‘Deathly Hallows’ will be the top-grossing ‘Potter’ film, or even the second biggest, despite the higher ticket prices,” Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru said, noting the film’s 61 percent drop from its opening weekend. “It’s running 9 percent ahead of ‘Goblet of Fire’ over the same release span and its lead is shrinking.” At an $895 million worldwide total, “Goblet of Fire” stands as the fourth-highest-grossing film in the series, well behind “Sorcerer’s Stone” with $974.7 (#8 on the all-time list). “Deathly Hallows, Part 1” should have little trouble eclipsing that “Goblet of Fire” sum, and some box-office experts even suggest it could zip past “Sorcerer’s Stone” to become the first franchise installment to break the $1 billion mark. “This has a very real shot at hitting $1 billion worldwide since it already has more than $600 million in the bank,” Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com , said. “I could see it breaking into the top five all-time worldwide earners.” While opinions differ on where “Deathly Hallows, Part 1” will end up, one thing is certain: Warner Bros. is awfully happy about the film’s performance. And when you add in home video and merchandise sales, the financial picture gets even rosier. It’ll be rosier still come next year when “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ arrives — quite possibly with an inflated 3-D ticket price. ” ‘Part 2’ will certainly out-gross ‘Part 1’ and has a chance of becoming the top-grossing ‘Potter’ in the eight-film series,” Pandya said. “New fans aren’t joining the party, but the base is large enough to keep the series going.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kanye West Goes on Insane Concert Rant, Possibly Compares Matt Lauer to Child Abuser

Kanye West is out of his mind. The rapper went on a VINTAGE Kanye rant last night in his New York concert, going off on everything from Taylor Swift and George W. Bush to the Today show. Of the VMA debacle, he said “If I wasn’t drunk, I woulda been on stage longer,” then accused Swift of milking it, saying she “rode and rode” the wave of publicity. Regarding the former President, West said his post-Katrina criticism of George Bush was “a BLATANT truth” … then lambasted the media for demonizing Bush. He also brought up the Today show drama again, reiterating his belief that Matt Lauer sabotaged him and ran a clip from his Q&A with Kanye out of context: “Matt Lauer’s not a bad guy I’m sure, but if you’re a child being abused by a parent … or a girl being abused by your boyfriend … the greatest win that you could ever have is for that person to hit you in public. You SEE! YOU SEE! I TOLD YOU!” Entertaining as he is, dude needs a whole team of psychiatrists ASAP. Charlie Sheen Text Messages Reveal Plans to "Get Ball Rollin" on Payments to Capri Anderson

Advantage Team Capri? While Charlie Sheen and Capri Anderson wrestle back and forth in the media and in the courtroom – the latest development in the battle between this sitcom and porn star revolves around the former suing the latter for extortion – TMZ has uncovered a slew of text messages that back up at least two of Anderson’s claims. In an interview with ABC that aired yesterday, Capri said Sheen contacted her the day after he allegedly went berzerk inside a NYC hotel room and offered her $20,000 to not tell her side of the story. She’s also cited an expensive purse the actor destroyed during his rampage on the night of October 25. If the following text messages are to believed, exchanges between these two soon after this incident took place do at least confirm these aspects of Anderson’s story. As first published by TMZ , we present a series of texts between Anderson and Sheen from the day after their infamous first day together: Sheen : “All I need is an Acct number etc and I will wire u 20k if u think that will cover everything … I really feel bad, u are as cool and sexy and as sweet and fun and friendly as they get!” Anderson : “u trashed my brand new prada purse dude not cool – how u managed to rip the strap off and put 2 holes in it is beyond me.” Sheen : “Don’t worry about our mutual friends, deal with me directly and I promise u kind lady, all will be restored and set straight.” Anderson : “Yes u can call me.

Charlie Sheen Files Extortion Lawsuit Against Capri Anderson

Yesterday, Capri Anderson had her day in front of the camera, giving multiple interviews to ABC and explaining her side of the infamous night she spent in NYC with Charlie Sheen. Now, the actor wants to have his day in court, as he’s filed a lawsuit against the porn star, alleging she tried to extort him for $1 million in exchange for silence over his drug-fueled rampage that October evening. “This case involves a shakedown and extortion of the internationally known actor and celebrity Charlie Sheen… by an opportunist pornographic film star and publicity-hungry scam artist,” reads the lawsuit filed yesterday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The document goes on to say that Anderson (real name: Christina Walsh) “fabricated a sensational tale about being assaulted, battered and held against will.” Capri most recently claimed she was paid $3,500 to be Sheen’s date for the night, witnessed the sitcom star snorting a white substance and then locked herself in a bathroom after he wrapped his hands around her neck and threw a lamp in her direction. Sheen states Anderson contacted him soon after the night in question and asked for at least $1 million. When he “refused to succumb to Walsh’s extortionate and illegal demands,” according to the suit, her reps contacted the Aspen authorities that prosecuted Sheen for domestic violence and attempted to have his probation revoked. The lawsuit, filed by attorney Marty Singer, also accuses Anderson of stealing Sheen’s $165,000 Patek Philippe watch. This is all pretty much a case of He Said/She Said/They Both Suck. Which side are you on?

‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Dominates Weekend Box Office

Seventh ‘Potter’ film conjures up a magical $125.1 million debut, best opening in franchise’s history. By Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. Although Harry, Ron and Hermione have yet to secure all the weapons necessary in their impending battle against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, they’ve already raised a significant amount of funds for the first half of their two-part war against the Dark Lord: To the surprise of absolutely nobody, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” is a magical success. The first half of “Deathly Hallows” premiered in theaters this weekend with all of the explosive wonder that fans have come to expect from the “Harry Potter” franchise. With an estimated $125.1 million earned across roughly 4,125 locations, “Deathly Hallows” enjoyed the best opening weekend of any previous “Harry Potter” film, easily stealing the record from “Goblet of Fire,” which earned $102.7 million in 2005. Not only does “Deathly Hallows” mark a new franchise high, it’s also the sixth-biggest opening weekend of all time, sitting comfortably alongside such cinematic titans as “The Dark Knight” ($158.4 million), “Spider-Man 3” ($151 million), “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($142.8 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) and “Iron Man 2” ($128.1 million). Despite its successes, however, “Deathly Hallows” was unable to wrest away the record set by “New Moon” for best November weekend of all time, falling short by nearly $20 million. “New Moon” also remains the third-highest-grossing opening weekend of all time, giving “Twilight” the edge over “Harry Potter” — for now, at least, as next summer’s “Deathly Hallows” conclusion is poised to break all kinds of records. “Deathly Hallows” wasn’t the only film in theaters this weekend, not that you would have noticed; the film outpaced the combined total of the four remaining top five competitors by a massive $80.1 million margin. Indeed, the only other movie to hit wide release this weekend was “The Next Three Days,” and despite the star power of Russell Crowe, the Lionsgate thriller landed poorly in fifth place with $6.8 million. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” ($125.1 million) #2 “Megamind” ($16.2 million) #3 “Unstoppable” ($13.1 million) #4 “Due Date” ($9.2 million) #5 “The Next Three Days” ($6.8 million) Upcoming Releases Several newcomers are entering the box-office arena as “Deathly Hallows” looks to continue its domination next weekend: Dwayne Johnson returns to kicking butt and taking names in “Faster,” Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi tell fairy tales in Disney’s “Tangled,” Christina Aguilera and Cher dance off in “Burlesque” and Jake Gyllenhaal enjoys “Love and Other Drugs” with Anne Hathaway.
