‘Deathly Hallows’ Director Says ‘Tender’ Hermione/Ron Scene Was Cut

‘They’re both very funny in it, but it ended up on the DVD because the overall tone of our film is quite intense,’ David Yates tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. Now that filmgoers have finally had the opportunity to feast their eyes on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” it’s time for the inevitable overanalyzing of what didn’t make the cut — specifically for the “Potter” fanatics, which pages in the book didn’t make the film version. When MTV News caught up with director David Yates, we asked him what cuts were particularly hard for him to make and which of those will end up on the DVD extras. ‪”There are a couple of things that we’ve lost that just didn’t quite survive,” he said. “I did this wonderful scene between Hermione and Ron. I wanted to explore their relationship a little bit more, so when Ron leaves it really breaks your heart. ‪”There was a scene we shot up in Scotland; it’s a scene where Ron is showing Hermione how to throw a stone on a lake, how to spin a stone on the lake, and Hermione is being really girly about it. She’s got a really rubbish throw, and she has to insist that Ron show her how to spin the stone to sort of entice tactility and physical contact, and it’s a really funny, tender and moving scene,” Yates described. “They’re both very funny in it, but it ended up on the DVD because the overall tone of our film, as you know, is quite intense.” ‪Yates went on to say that he had the scene in the film, but it just didn’t quite fit. “We tried to keep as much of the stuff we felt was important as possible,” he said. Luckily for fans wanting to see that scene, they can look for it on the DVD. ‪”The DVD extras, I would guess there is about 10 or 12 or 15 extra minutes,” Yates revealed. ‪ What scene do you want to see on the DVD? Malin Akerman Reportedly Replacing Lindsay Lohan In ‘Inferno’

‘Watchmen’ star will take over lead role in Linda Lovelace biopic. By Mawuse Ziegbe Malin Akerman Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images The onetime Lindsay Lohan vehicle “Inferno” has found a new face to heat up the screen. Malin Akerman will replace the troubled actress in the Linda Lovelace biopic, according to Deadline.com . Akerman is known for her roles in diverse fare such as the ensemble romantic comedy “Couples Retreat” and the superhero drama “Watchmen.” The Swedish-born star will portray late porn actress Lovelace, who rose to prominence for the cult 1972 adult flick “Deep Throat” before later speaking out against the porn industry. The replacement comes after Lohan’s highly publicized issues with drugs and stints in jail threatened to derail the project. The actress spent 13 days in prison in July for violating probation stemming from a 2007 DUI conviction after the alcohol-monitoring device she had been sporting since May reportedly went off at party, and a judge found that Lohan was skipping alcohol-education classes. She was later hauled back to prison for a day-long bid after failing a court-mandated drug test. Lohan is currently in treatment after a judge ordered the actress to remain in rehab until January. Despite Lohan’s legal woes, director Matthew Wilder had publicly stood by the actress. “We love her. We want her to do well,” Wilder said in a statement to MTV News in September after Lohan returned to jail for the second time this year. “We will make the picture shortly.” However, he did admit to being frustrated about Lohan’s ongoing issues. “I understand people’s exasperation. I share it,” he said. “But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage.” By November, Wilder conceded that the project would be moving on without the starlet. “We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” he told E! News on Friday. “We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard.” The director explained that the inability to insure Lohan was a factor in the decision to continue the production without the embattled actress. “We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support,” Wilder said. “Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible for us to go forward.” What do you think of Malin Akerman replacing Lindsay Lohan in “Inferno”? The flick powered through the past two days with stunning momentum, picking up $24 million at midnight screenings Friday and zooming to $61 million by the end of the day. The tally sets a record for the series, blasting through the previous “Harry Potter” opening-weekend, box-office benchmark of $102.7 million set by 2005’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “Megamind” continued its comfortable fun in the top five, finishing the weekend in second place. The Will Ferrell and Tina Fey comedy about the antics of a CG supervillain rang up $16.2 million. ‘Love And Other Drugs’ Stars Say The Story ‘Trumps’ The Nudity

‘I think us taking off our clothes in the movie is the result of us knowing that we cared about the story,’ Jake Gyllenhaal tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: MTV News Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway may claim that there isn’t that much nudity in their new romance/drama “Love and Other Drugs,” in which Gyllenhaal plays playboy Viagra sales rep Jamie who falls for Hathaway’s free-spirited Maggie, but given the publicity surrounding it — as well as their scantily clad Entertainment Weekly covers this week — we think there’s more to the story. When MTV News caught up with the playful co-stars, we asked them if they realized how much they would eventually have to talk about getting nekkid. “I really didn’t,” Gyllenhaal insisted. “I really, honestly did not think about that at all.” “I didn’t either,” Hathaway added. “Because when you make a film, you don’t know what the film is going to be or how much of what you shot is going to be in it, and so to anticipate a reaction is kind of fruitless.” “Plus, maybe I’m a little naive in thinking that the story trumps all the little naked presence,” Gyllenhaal offered. “There’s not that much nudity,” Hathaway insisted. “I saw the film the other night, and we’d been talking to journalists for a couple weeks at that point, and when I saw it, I’m like, ‘Why is everyone going on about this?’ It’s really such a small part of the film,” she said. “It’s almost like the media is conditioned to think of this as being a very big deal. I don’t think it’s a big deal, so I didn’t anticipate anyone else doing so.” Gyllenhaal did admit that he and Hathaway strip down throughout the film, but that it really shouldn’t be the focal point. “We are naked a lot, that is for sure. I don’t want to play it down either,” he said. “We are naked a lot more than you normally see in movies, but I think us taking off our clothes in the movie is the result of us knowing that we cared about the story and the story is important to us. The talk about being naked or having clothes off or how racy the scenes are, no matter how much we talk about it, we know what we’ve done we’re really proud of.” “I just do it for the money,” Hathaway joked. “I don’t care about the story.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Love and Other Drugs.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Daniel Radcliffe Doesn’t Want To Play Harry Potter Again

‘I’m going to be working very hard to establish myself as an actor outside of this series,’ ‘Deathly Hallows’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News In spite of the billions of dollars grossed by the “Harry Potter” film franchise and the book series it’s based on, the obsessive devotion of fans, the endless merchandise, blogs and so forth, the wizard series is coming to an end. For real. MTV News caught up with superstar Daniel Radcliffe as he promoted “Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” and we asked him about J.K. Rowling’s recent “Oprah” interview. The author denied to Oprah Winfrey that she had said she’d never write another “Potter” book. So we asked Radcliffe if he could foresee revisiting his Harry Potter character someday. “I think Jo is being very kind to a lot of people by giving them that little bit of hope and me that mild heart attack,” Radcliffe joked. “But I’ve been doing this for 10 years. A team of surgeons would be needed to reapply my jaw to my face if she did this. I would be incredibly surprised but, you know, the other thing is, people have been saying, ‘If she did [write more books], would you be in [the films]?’ And at this point in time, ‘No’ is the answer,” he admitted. “I’ve done it for 10 years and that’s a long time. But I’m also being careful to qualify that with, ‘Better men than me have changed their mind.’ ” Radcliffe went on to say that while he’s resisting the urge to say “never again” to another “Potter” film, he also hopes he’s able to move onward with his career. “I don’t want to say it would be a step backwards because these films have been so good to me, but over the next few years I’m going to be working very hard to establish myself as an actor outside of this series,” he said. “It would seem self-defeating if I went back to them.” Are you sad to see the “Harry Potter” franchise ending? Atomic Tom Rock Thrillist.com Birthday Bash

Brooklyn band’s NYC club performance of its viral hit ‘Take Me Out’ got partygoers dancing, singing along. By Rya Backer Atomic Tom’s Luke White Photo: MTV News Wednesday night at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge nightclub, lifestyle website Thrillist.com celebrated its fifth birthday. The milestone was rung in with ample friends, liquor sponsors and a performance by Atomic Tom — a band from just across the East River in Brooklyn that recently earned worldwide renown. The NYC foursome became a viral sensation after posting a video online of them performing their single “Take Me Out” live on the subway, using only iPhone apps as instruments. “As a band we’ve always done these creative video blogs … and we try to showcase our music through it as well. This most recent one was no different,” explained guitarist Eric Espiritu, whose little brother thought up the concept. “He pitched it, and we were like, ‘Yes! Let’s do this. Let’s figure out how we’re gonna do it, where we’re gonna do it, and let’s just do it.’ Audio’s all live, it’s all one take. Video is one take cobbled together from three different iPhone video cameras.” In addition to garnering nearly 4 million views on YouTube, the clip also has won over some notable fans. “Alyssa Milano tweeted our video!” gushed Espiritu. “What’d she accompany it with? It said, like, ‘I like this,’ and then the link.” Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo has supposedly seen the video as well. At the Thrillist.com bash, Atomic Tom performed an energetic 40-minute set of anthemic power-pop with a few ballads thrown in for good measure, mostly from their album The Moment , which drops on Tuesday (November 22). (Despite hailing from the hipster mecca, bassist Phil Galitzine says the group has no indie designs: “We’re not really an indie band, we don’t really have an indie-band sound.) Lead singer Luke White — whose voice could be mistaken for that of the Killers’ Brandon Flowers — flawlessly pulled off frontman duties, keeping the crowd engaged, while drummer Tobias Smith, Galitzine and Espiritu steadfastly took to their respective instruments. The show culminated in a revved-up cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” followed by “Take Me Out.” The finale had everyone dancing and some even singing along. Atomic Tom played the song that put them on the map with so much might that they seemed almost worn once it ended. But it was worth it — by the end of the evening it seemed evident that many more people would be playing that tune on their own iPhones. Related Artists Atomic Tom

‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’: 10 Best Cast Quotes

From Daniel Radcliffe on being short to Rupert Grint talking about his ice cream truck, these are our favorite quotes from the ‘Harry Potter’ cast. By Eric Ditzian Emma Watson and Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News We’re gonna miss these kids. Yes, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” doesn’t come out for another day, and “Part 2” will be coming down the line next year. But we’re already starting to get nostalgic about those wizards and witches — folks we’ve come to know well over the past decade and who entertain us on and off the big screen. At least we’ve been able to spend a lot of time with Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and their pals over the last year as they finished off the “Deathly Hallows” shoot and embarked on an international media tour. They’ve joked and laughed with us. They’ve opened up about the prospects of leaving behind a franchise that has been all-consuming for the last 10 years. They’ve even practiced their American accents with us. Of all our chats with the actors, though, a few lines were especially memorable. Check out our 10 favorite quotes from the “Deathly Hallows” cast. 10. “They came up and said, ‘How are you feeling? How are you doing?’ And I couldn’t find any words, and I just said, ‘I just want you to know, I’ve had a really nice time.’ And it was such a young, quite innocent, sweet thing to say, that I kind of caught myself off-guard. That was the moment when I suddenly had a lump in my throat and was like, ‘OK, I’m really going to have to struggle to keep it together on the last shot,’ which was a stunt, very simple, just jumping and rolling onto a map.” — Daniel Radcliffe on his final day of shooting on the franchise 9. “I like my teeth. I had fake teeth. It’s a beauty tip: Use fake teeth. The [teeth] plumped up my upper lip, which makes you look younger. It’s like having collagen without having collagen because it makes the lip fuller. Always get false teeth.” — Helena Bonham Carter on her character’s makeup effects 8. “I drove it down on the last day and served ice cream to everyone. I haven’t quite perfected the technique. It kind of came out in a jet.” — Rupert Grint on the ice cream truck he rented to serve the cast and crew on the final day of production 7. “For nearly two months, we’ve all been doing prosthetic tests and all sorts of preparation for the epilogue. I’ve been having some aging training. You’ve got to walk differently. There’s a slump in your walk. … It’s bizarre. We have a lovely guy who comes in. It was a little weird the first time — imagine you’ve got weights on your arms! There have been a number of times where I nearly laughed and I had to hold it in.” — Tom Felton on preparing for the “Deathly Hallows” epilogue scene 6. “I was worried on a personal level because I wanted to be slightly taller than I am, ideally. But I’ve now accepted it. Basically, I came to the conclusion a while ago that you can either be really bitter about it or you can make loads of funny jokes.” — Daniel Radcliffe on accepting the fact that he’s short 5. “You have to embrace the totality of his evilness. He’s like the devil.” — Ralph Fiennes on playing Voldemort 4. “Basically, it amounted to the fact that she felt I had been very good in this ‘Harry Potter’ film, and as a reward for that, she wasn’t going to make any more ‘Harry Potter’ [books].” — Daniel Radcliffe on a text message he received from J.K. Rowling 3. “I would have been public enemy #1, I think, if I hadn’t continued. I did think about that.” — Emma Watson on once considering quitting the franchise 2. “You know why I retweeted it, because you know that’s the only list you’ll ever see where I’m ahead of Robert Pattinson for something to do with sexiness, which is completely untrue and unfathomable, but I will take it in great stead.” — Tom Felton on winning Hollywood Crush’s Top 10 “Harry Potter” Hotties competition 1. “I don’t know, take it off?” — Emma Watson on how she can convince 100 percent of fans to approve of her red carpet dress Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jay-Z Defends Rap As An Art Form On ‘The Daily Show’

Hov gives Jon Stewart a lighthearted version of the purpose of his book, ‘Decoded.’ By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z appears on “The Daily Show” on Wednesday Photo: Comedy Central Jay-Z’s whirlwind promotional tour for his just-released book, “Decoded,” landed him on Wednesday night’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” The banter between Hova and Stewart was lighthearted — the rapper, businessman and author threw up the Roc hand sign while taking his seat — but still managed to touch on the weightier aspects of hip-hop culture. “The basis of this book was, I care about the culture and about rap and it being a respectable form of art,” Jay-Z said, echoing what he told MTV News earlier this week. “The book is surrounded around these songs, but it’s also about a generation of kids. We grew up around the same time as rap. … It’s basically a story behind those songs, you know, context.” After some talk about rappers going from admonishing police to actually needing them in light of their newfound fame, the topic shifted to rap music’s maturation. “Every art form has its pie in the face, more low-brow,” Stewart said, comparing hip-hop to comedy. “But then there’s always been the poets. I’ve always seen rap as more almost the embodiment of, like, Richard Pryor. How Richard Pryor started out, he didn’t really talk about his real life, he was doing shtick, and then he grew into an artist and began to explore himself. It seems like the story of rap is that same story.” Jay-Z agreed with Stewart’s sentiment and also noted the genre’s use as a scapegoat for America’s ills. To this Stewart drew laughs when he quipped, “As a Jew, I want to thank you for that. … When you guys came along, it really took the heat off our shoulders.” Stewart then inquired if rappers felt they were being unfairly targeted for their form of expression. “Of course, I’m not talking about all rap, because some of it is sh–, and some of it is great,” Jay-Z deadpanned before adding that hip-hop gets attacked for troubles that regardless of its existence “were going on in the community daily … no pun intended.” And when Stewart asked if rap’s success had lead to increased scrutiny, Jay-Z talked of “reverends in our community driving bulldozers over our CDs,” likely alluding to Reverend Calvin O. Butts III’s threats to drive a steamroller over rap CDs in 1993 to protest offensive lyrics. The televised segment ended with Stewart asking Jay-Z if he had another five minutes for more questions. The extended (and uncensored) version of the interview, in which they discuss the natural progression of rapper to entrepreneur and how hip-hop will mature in the coming days, is now posted on TheDailyShow.com .
